Extremely disappointing. I also didn't know that Chaos was such a bitch in combat. Beat their armies back and that was just about it. No End Times, no Storm of Chaos. Their invasion was more of a wimper than a bang.

There's a mod that doubles their numbers which seems intersting, using it alongside a flat 25% more taxes mod should make the AI better at defending as well.

Slowly, very slowly. Use diplomacy with humans, your first focus should be immediately wiping out the successionists, then getting Stirland into confederation and moving through their land to wipe out the Vampires, the northern stuff gets raped by chaos/norse and is just a chore to deal with early game. When Archaeon shows up you get a massive boost to diplo and can start confederating with everyone. Fucking up the vampires also gets you big diplo boosts, same if you send a boat full of spear/crossbows to pillage the Norse coastal provinces, that'll help you get Marienburg into confederation. I just finished an Empire campaign that took about 140 turns and I never declared war on a human faction. End of the game literally every human/dwarf faction was allied with me and I had confederated all of the Empire but Nordland and Ostmark.

Empire has to play defensively with early units. Make a line with spears (shielded ones if possible) or halberds and puts crossbows/gunners/artillery behind it. Map corner tactics make every defensive battle trivial. The Reiksgards you start with are incredibly important to keep alive for the whole successionist revolt since they rape human swords/spearsmen in flank attacks.

Enfiliating fire from a couple of cannon does a shit load more damage than even demigryphs can in the same amount of time.

With the added benefit of being able to snipe war machines or monsters at long range as well.

My biggest disappointment so far was having Two Gyrobombers drops all 12 of their bombs center mass into one unit and it doing jack-Sigmar-fucking-shit.

For being a faction that's only purpose is so destroy shit with artillery and guns from afar while frontline units tank their artillery and guns are pretty dissapointing, even the Empire's is better. Plus they're more versatile.

Organ guns are nice but I think the best I did with them was focus 4 of them on a group of Chaos Trolls in order to get the Chaos Trolls to half-health and broken.

...after about 3 volleys of course.

And as far as flying units go, I'm honestly more excited for Bretonnia's Flying Pegasus Knights.

So yeah, as much as I love Dwarves, extremely dissapointed with them right now.

Your artillery supports you, but its not your workhorse, the really strong and diverse infantry are what makes dwarves strong.

I have to say the worst I'm dissapointed with is the Thunderers and Gyros.

Gyros just seem completely useless.

And while I can understand Handgunngers being a ranged counter to armour for the Empire, Dwarf Thunderers are just the exact same niche. The only thing they have going for them over that is they're a "decent" melee combatant. I expected total ranged destruction, instead I got wimps with shitty guns.

Holy fuck, playing as Chaos on Very Hard is exhausting. You have to excel at every battle, as the AI will literally never engage you with anything but 3+ stacks at once.

Trying to get a second horde up and running is a nightmare, as the Lord will face endless doomstacks before getting the chance to get Lightning Strike, and you don't have any rebellions to farm for easy XP.

Fucking hell, the northern dwarves have fucking six full armies of Longbeards and Thunderers on the one settlement they still possess. I can only imagine what bullshit the Empire pulls out of their fat asses if I ever manage to break through Kislev.

Shield do nothing in melee, they just provide a 30% chance to block missile fire, which is significant.

Units with them usually have a slightly higher melee defence rating as well, possible because they're just higher-tier tho.

All in all, unless you're planning to stand in one place and wait for the enemy to run out of ammunition, it's not worth it.

In terms of Chaos it just makes normal Chosen better against missiles than Chosen H or GW.

The only other factions that have a real difference between shielded or not is basically just like the empire. The bigger units without shielded have like 50 armor more, meaning they're still more durable than shielded units anyways.

It was my 3rd attempt at an Empire playthrough only to just have everything up and go to shit randomly because of wonky diplomacy. First time around I had Bastogne and another frog faction declare war on me fucking 3 turns into the campaign. Second time the dwarfs around Reikland and Marienburg made an alliance and then declared war on me while I was sieging the last secessionist stronghold.

Moment you get an agent send him to the Chaos wastes and get him attacking armies, it will give you a massive diplomatic buff again.

Should avoid any wars with anyone nearby if you throw enough money and attack Chaos enough. Sometimes its worth just sending a 1 stack over to Chaos land and raiding it for even more diplomatic buffs. The more you get the less anyone around you will attack you.

The end game for Chaos was pretty dull and I was pretty shocked to find I'd only played 16 battles in the campaign stats. Wasn't like I was rushing either and apart from sieging standard garrisons I played most battles. Highlight was Thorgrim trying to escape via underway and I intercepted.

I went as Orcs with:
1 Grimgor
1 Goblin Shaman
4 Ork Boyz
6 Black Orks
2 Night Goblin Archers
1 Goblin Spider Cav
1 Ork Boar Boyz
I watched some Heir of Carthage multiplayer videos before, so I did learn some basic tactics.

Basically:
- meat shield infantry (ork boyz) in a first line, spread very thin to soak up missle damage and charges
- black orks in second line to reinforce once ork boyz engage enemy infantry
- Grimgor between first and second line to buff as many troops as possible
- cavalry on one flank to distract skirmishers and artillery, and also do back charges if there is an opportunity
- night goblin archers to poison toughest enemy units and be a cavalry bait
- use group buffs on Grimgor and Goblin shaman every time they are off cooldown

This allowed me to win all games so far, including some greatswords/demigryph knights armies.

Nah, I play on VH and battle difficulty on Normal. I don't want the AI to cheat, and most of the mods deal with that and artificial difficulty in general. I've been thinking of getting rid of that No Confederation Penalty mod though since I no longer get a debuff from playing on VH.

Everything else affects the AI and the player so it balances itself out really nice.

The trick with Savage Orc archers is to countersnipe. I usually go two quarrellers to one unit of savage orc archers, and then slowly work my way across the line. If your formation is tight enough your warriors will hold the line until they die, assuming your Lord is right there in the centre pushing the infantry's face in.

It's a real pain in the ass to get to, takes about 3-4 turns from Mount Squighorn, and has a walled garrison with 3-4 nobs. Not very feasible early game until you wrest Death Pass from Grimgor Ironhide, and even then the bastard will pop up behind your lines by the Underway. Really, best just to leave it to Zhufbar and trade with them instead of having to manage it on your already tight resources.

Except you get more chaos invasions, the AI is more aggressive and they still get cash bonuses in the campaign. I don't use any major economy mods though, they always make the AI spam low-tier armies and that's just a hassle. It plays just the same as VH except you don't get those anoying order penalties. The AI can handle public order just fine as well, and it actually makes some agents worthwhile to use. I've played on all difficulties and I never saw a single AI rebel until I used those mods.

Shit's fun.

Vargheists just need a level two building, so they're quite easy to get and add a lot of flexibility to your army. Against other undead armies, dire wolves are actually pretty good against zombies and using them to flank helps win battles.
Aside from that, Grave guard are solid and happen to have a great weapon variant that will be very useful against dwarfs and high end units.
You can go for quite a long time just raising skeletons and zombies, then using raise dead to recruit higher tier units, so don't worry too much about recruiting units for a while.

Attrition is a lot more punishing to Chaos than all other factions, and many regions can't be completely covered even if you force march for a turn (see Kislev, Norsca, Talabecland, Border Princes, Averland-Sylvania).

Well as the dawi I just finish off the first province, then leave my army at pillars of grungi to intercept anyone trying to attack. Build a guardhouse at squighorn and upgrade it to get walls. That way they can't blitz it without giving you a chance to send your army to reinforce.

If you think its a good idea taking Mount Gunbad is great because its probably the one city along with Marienburg that offers the most income. With both gold mines and a special building.

Two difficulties; one for campaign, other for battle. Campaign gives the AI more resources, battle gives it bonuses. You can change battle difficulty in the options menu and then under campaign. Switch it to normal if you want actually fun battles.

Quit once the orcs reached my line. Seems like for mortars it's okay (they almost seem to have gotten less kills, not more), hellblaster was behind a mound that I was too lazy to resposition so need to retest. Great cannon was absurdly powerful for some raisin and hellstorm maybe a smidge down and it'd be good. I need to run this without a combat overhaul mod and without the enlarged unit sizes, though.

Mortars at least are cheap.

Hellstorm rockets are longer-ranged mortars but much more expensive and not they can't hit enemies that blob against your line as well.

Great Cannon- never built one.

Helblaster- worse than handgunners and much more expensive

Steam Tank- fantastic but very expensive. I only built one in my campaign.

There's only like 5 buildings that require a settlement to be above level 3 for the orks. Put all of those in your main city and do the generic other shit in the rest. That means your other town(s) will have like, 1 iron works, 1 black iron forge, one of the military buildings, and then like a +income building.

In terms of Black Crag province you can literally get every single building in that province alone all at the highest rank.

Check out "Blueprint for Armageddon", it's a podcast series about WW1, it's narrated by a guy called Dan Carlin and he finds the craziest anectodes and letters from the time describing the shit the average soldiers saw in teh war.

Soldiers on the same side fighting to the death with eachother for the last gas mask as mustard gas is creeping in, men stuck neck deep in mud and sinking, begging to be shot by their comrades so they didn't have to die by drowning in mud and corpses, officers turning around and yelling furiously at their platoon for not advancing during an attack, only to realise every single man has been mown down by machineguns behind them etc... lotsa unimaginable grim shit.
