Someone do palette tests for that room.

I've never seen anything but green/purple for that room. It's like that on real hardware for me too.

I doubt it will be anywhere near as dramatic as the red bricks.
>>
>>143675396

NTSC has poorly defined reds, so that's part of the problem.

Are there other consoles that suffer from the same NTSC color woes as the NES?

Any console with analog output, potentially. All the DACs have their quircks.

Is there a good way besides installing Windows 7/XP to play old pc games on modern hardware /emugen/?

Pic related is some DirectDraw wrapper that was supposed to fix the game in modern hardware.

http://superuser.com/a/881230/599039 Can this be applied to all old DirectX games?

It's kinda of funny how pc emulate all kinds of console games but when it comes to old pc games shit gets rough.

A lot of consoles natively generate RGB and thus have objective color palettes, however. The NES does not.
>>
>>143681503
IIRC he was playing the VC version with a classic controller, whose analog stick is way too sensitive compared to the N64's, which can make aiming the light arrows quite hard.

Hadn't though about that, but if you look at DraStic's release history it's slowed down drastically over the past year. Exophase very well may have already started a 3DS emulator.

Irrelevant for years. Guy can't make anything to top bsnes. Tried to get into an ego pissing contest with RetroArch by trying to compete directly with them with Higan. Pissed away any brand recognition he had by ditching "bsnes" for "I am totally in love with Japan" style name.

Guy could do something like focus on another console and bring it to bsnes level quality emulation, but instead has bit off more than he can chew and just stagnates.

Really, bnes should have been his next focus. He could make it pretty much perfect.
>>
>>143684364

Probably all with the same stolen documentation again as he is known for with his 0-day GBA emulator.

Quite the hypocritical lot these guys are to make this same propaganda over and over again that "emulators are DA LEGALZZ!!!!" when they all get their docs from WarioWorld in the end. Pathetic really. But when should you start expecting a sub-warez scene to be 'honorable' about what they do.

Emulation devs work hard to provide us free content and to enjoy old video games. Then a bunch of man children shreik that they must have lives of poverty? They deserve to profit for their hard work like anyone else.

I myself donate to the patreons of several emulation projects. Would CEMU have gotten anywhere it has without the donations? I think not. I have on my Android device several high quality emulators that, yes I paid for. And I'd do it again. Quality products with months of work put into them deserve to be rewarded.

Mednafen, RetroArch and other projects are holding us back, by clinging to this poor man poverty mindset. They jealosly try to tear anyone down who tries to earn money for their work. If they just got with the program, they would be less bitter, and their projects would greatly benefit from it.

Yes. Would it have gotten to where it is without the free documentation and information provided by the hacking and homebrew community? Absolutely not.

>He's lying. There's no DRM in CEMU.
Yes there is. Patreon builds need a serial key to run. Newer builds have/will have online DRM.

>Would CEMU have gotten anywhere it has without the donations? I think not.

They would have gotten nowhere without that Oman-style leak, that is for sure.

Which returns us to this particular issue: if it were open source, it would quickly transpire where most of this is coming from.

It's as 'legal' as making Overwatch porn with Source Filmmaker. Just see how much Blizzard tolerates that.

You gotta edit config.mk and config.h to have HAVE_VULKAN defined and enabled. Then just make.

I've been testing it for a few hours now, and it's actually amazing. It beats the SHIT out of the GL driver. For one, it completely eliminates the need for GPU hard sync. Even the bsnes cores, which are notorious for having very noticeable input lag without it for some reason, work nicely. This frees up CPU cycles that can go towards frame delay instead. Also, amazingly, it gets rid of random stutters on multi-monitor setups, so now you can safely output to a secondary monitor or HDTV and still keep smooth motion without resorting to the shitty D3D driver.

The only drawbacks, other than being confined to modern hardware, are that it doesn't support current Cg or GLSL shaders, but I'm sure many of them will get ported to Vulkan's format eventually. Also no compatibility with libretro GL cores, of course, but we all knew that.

All in all, I'm very impressed.

Kek, even Sp finally admitted Cg is dead after shilling it for so long(because themaister added better suppport for glsl at long last) while libretro shills are still shilling when libretro is clearly in the wrong.
https://github.com/libretro/beetle-psx-libretro/issues/50

>Squarepusher:Cannot be helped, the GL renderer right now requires 3.3 core context and Cg doesn't work with that.

>Maybe when/if the GL renderer no longer necessarily requires core context will Cg shaders work with it.

You've been able to emulate Skyward Sword since the day it released, and the HD version of Twilight Princess is just as good as the GameCube/Wii version which means it's not good at all because it's a kusoge.

The controller also didn't work like crap, you just need to git gud.

Like, if you have PCSX2 installed, you should just disable the internal frame limiting, and just use MSI Afterburner to force 60/60 frames.

No, seriously, if you read this, just install MSI afterburner, run RivaTuner Statistic Server its bundled with, and set framecap of 60. Disable the internal frame limiter.
The gains are so massive, its insane.

If I have a 360 controller for the pc is that dongle that plugs into the computer an open bluetooth access point? Could I use a wii motion plus controller with it? Would it even work without the little ir bar thing?
>>
>>143768768
No, the 360 controller isn't bluetooth.
>>
>>143768857

Would I be able to use a motion plus controller with a bluetooth access point alone or do I need the little bar for the top of the screen. The inferred light one or whatever it uses.

There seems to be an actual bar you can buy that works as both the access point and ir bar for the dolphin emulator.

Also someone seems to have gotten skyware sword working for the 360 controller but it uses some hacky multiple keybinding profile methods.
>>
>>143764020
Any game where you mostly only use one button other than the dpad is shit unless it's turn based or some shit and even then that's kind of pushing it in simplicity if you don't usually have to push other buttons to perform subfunctions.

Yes, you need some sort of IR emitter; real sensor bar, dolphin bar, jerry rigged IR LEDs, candles. Getting a dolphin bar would probably be the best if you also need a bluetooth adapter.
>Also someone seems to have gotten skyware sword working for the 360 controller but it uses some hacky multiple keybinding profile methods.
Yeah and it's terrible, you're constantly fighting the controls and have to switch settings around to get things right.
>>
>>143765404
Also because it was compatible with HLSL compilers, so it worked with D3D.
>>
>>143769084
>Also someone seems to have gotten skyware sword working for the 360 controller
Don't bother; invest in a sensor bar and use true wiimotes

Alot of people shit on the game being designed around the gimmick (though SS has much more glaring faults), but the gimmick itself actually works very well and is intuitive.
>>
>>143769521
No, it won't really help with the input delay, but it will remove A LOT of the stuttering.
Drakengard is actually playable with MSI Afterburner to force stable framerate

I am going to try SOTC with this next. Most likely the core problem will be performance. But if it stutters less, it will help by miles.
>>

The bad is is that.... 20 fps on original, and you are capped at like 50/60 performance, so its still extremely shit. You still get moments of 3-4 seconds of input delay. The frame stutter is insane.

It's literally just a modified Z80 processor, one of the most documented CPUs in history...

>>143812952
>When I worked on SNES emulation, I would spend up to 2-3 weeks putting in 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, until I'd crack even the tiniest, seemingly unimportant detail, like with MDR/open-bus updates during HDMA, or I/O->read cycle shift during two-cycle CPU instructions when IRQs trigger. The theory was simple: test every last possibility, no matter how small, to make sure there's no other possible way a given behavior works. Because if you don't perfect everything as you go along, it turns into a giant mess where certain things only work because two or more things are wrong, and then when you fix one of them the right way, you think it's incorrect because an important game breaks.

>Sorry, but I just don't have the energy left in me to do all this again for the GB.

He's burnt out for life. This is what it takes out of a human being to create an emulator as accurate as bsnes. Can you even imagine we will ever get emulators as accurate as bsnes for stuff like N64 or DS or the like? No, no you cannot.

>GB doesn't run a Z80
>>
>>143813716
The instruction set is based on the Z80, but it's actually more similar to the 8080 with custom instruction. It is neither a subset or a superset of the Z80. Furthermore, a lot of corner cases and quirks also behave differently, not to mention that the timings are completely different.

But ignoring that, the CPU isn't the hardest part of making a very accurate emulator, the majority of the complexity is in the interactions between the several components of the system. CPUs are simple and easy to test. A bunch of stuff in a bus with cycle-level interactions much less so.
>>
>>143813478
Fine, but it's still slow and no recent progress on a dynarec.
>>
>>143814218
It's a Z80, m8. And everything is extremely documented. You could practically build a GB with off-the-shelf parts.
>>
>>143814218

I completely agree. I tried looking at a z80 manual while writing my GB emu, it was basically pointless. Too many differences. And getting the GB CPU cycle accurate is pretty trivial, it's the GPU and APU that are tricky.

That being said I don't really understand why byuu is struggling with that. Even if he doesn't have a flashcart (and he should have one if he's serious about writing a GB emu) he could get a good level of accuracy just by using the widely available documentation and blaarg's tests. The GB really is simple.
>>

>Nintendo custom CPU, video, LCD and audio controllers are off the shelf parts
So you're just dumb.
>>
>>143814973

Honestly what is there that byuu actually understands?

Did you see the audio resampler threads? He basically doesn't know integral. Even CaptainJustice was halfway mocking him:

http://board.byuu.org/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1063&start=20

"Integral.

Welcome to calculus, the dark art of doing things which should not be done to numbers.
And, unfortunately for you, something you really need to know for any major sort of audio manipulation."

He basically had most of bsnes/higan spoonfed to him by other, more mathematically gifted devs (read: people who didn't flunk high-school).

Time to give up this illusion of byuu the master programmer, he is the very frontend coder he accuses others of being, but in his own way.

Hello, I am curious as to how far along ripping animations from nintendo games is. I understand that the brres format is understand and Ive read the documentation for it years ago when I was working on it. But for other games I wanted to know how far along are they in terms of ripping animations. Such as twilight princess, skyward sword, sm4sh, hyrule warriors, etc.
Any direction would be helpful.
I found a dead link for a tool that supposedly could rip some animations from twilight princess so that must mean that someone understands the animation format to some degree.
Im going to continue reading like 60 pages of archived conversations to see what I can get out of them, but if anyone has any ideas as to where a good place to start is let me know.
Thanks.

byuu just did everything by trial and error. Say someone gave you a huge complex program and asked you to create a new module. You then painstakingly tested out pieces of existing code until it did what you wanted it to do. This is similar to byuu's "brute force" method of coding, which has a lot in common with how autistic people code (source: I am slightly autistic). He can't grasp the higher order concepts, only the details, meaning he has no idea how anything works, but if given a huge amount of time can assemble something that works.

I'm not sure how the Project64 installer works, but if it was run with full privileges, then whatever you installed has free run of your system. This is generally harmless for things you _want_ to install.

But this is an application that somebody somewhere wanted to sneak onto other computers. If you wanted to spy on someone, would you only put one microphone in their house in plain view and how they just don't bother to tear it out?

You can never really know unless you start from scratch.

Deinterlaced is worse looking than progressive especially when you increase the internal resolution and SH2 isn't part of the games that are on the 480p compatibility list (holding the X and triangle button during boot) and I doubt you can force it via ps2force480p (generic iso patcher that works on a few games but it will break any game that relies on CRC hacks and it will generally break most games anyway) either and it also doesn't have a 480p hack specific to it.

I bought a few used Gamecube controllers. They weren't completely clean, but they also weren't terribly gross.

Of course with all used electronics, I disassemble them and soak and scrub the housings and buttons with warm, soapy water.
And with Gamecube controllers, it's a good idea to bend the metal tab on the Z button out a bit to bring back the original clicky feeling it's supposed to have instead of feeling spongy.

Nine times out of ten, they come out like brand new. The other one time, it's always obvious from the controller's appearance before buying that it won't ever be the same.

Not going out of your way to fix a particular game (which is sure to attract a lot of clueless users who are sure to ask for handholding at every corner and not contribute anything of value) is a bit different from "he intentionally broke Pokemon".

Now if he refuses contributions fixing this game for no good reason, that's different.

Closed source binary blob emulators are not conductive to preservation because they don't reveal anything about how the emulator works internally.

It's the end result of a profit motive, which is done to protect "trade secrets" about how they achieve emulation to prevent competition and undercutting.

Why bother reversing them when you can go reverse the real hardware instead? Closed source emulators are worthless for preservation.

Because reversing the hardware requires the hardware and electronics knowledge, besides you can fuck up infinite amount of times when looking at software, with hardware a single mistake makes the whole thing go kaboom

Because reading RE'd ASM is a pain in the ass.
Also, while it does tell you what the emulator does, you don't see why it does so since the function call would have comments which you don't get when RE.

>PlayStation 4: Having access to decrypted kernel, decrypted modules and the release of the free and open-source SDK's at https://github.com/CTurt/PS4-SDK and https://github.com/ps4dev/ps4sdk all the information required to write a PS4 emulator is there. The first attempt at Nucleus was to load the PS4 executable files as Wine does. All the technical challenges have been studied before, and it has been proven to work. The remaining part is to reverse-engineer and reimplement OS syscalls and implement a GPU frontend for the Liverpool/R10XX guest GPU.

For what purpose. We need a CPU revolution to run that stuff at full speed and I don't have high hopes for that seeing how new processors getting tendentially slower than their last generation counterparts.
>>
>>143903517

If they do it the wine way it won't be emulated and therefore could run on a modern computer. But it would technically be off topic for this thread as well...

>>143903009
Kinda. He's currently working on PS3 emulation stuff, so any further PS4 stuff will be put off until that's much further along. Someone else could start, but then again, someone else could've started nearly a year ago, but no one else has AFAIK.
>>143903517
Not really, you're 'just' emulating parts of the OS and the GPU. It'd be very HLE without the CPU emulation - think UltraHLE or Cemu, but without needing a dynarec.

>>
>>143904958
The ultimate HLE would be to emulate the individual games themselves.
>>
>>143905192

Fair point, although that's really pushing the meaning of "emulation".
>>
>>143904942

Why would they do that if that's not even true?
>>
>>143905354
Emulation had a really bad stigma in the early 90's, and Sony was trying to sue some, so they wanted to get away from it and drop any mention of 'Windows' from the name.
>>
>>143905354

I guess they wanted to distance themselves from things like Bochs or Qemu, or even virtualization solutions. Wine basically runs windows apps "natively", they just translate the API calls.
>>
Emulation is such a broad word. It really doesn't even convey much on a technical level what you are talking about. New terminology is needed.

I am trying to play Days of Ruin on Desmume 9.11. When I'm using OpenGL renderer, graphics are getting fucked up, and when I'm using SoftRasterizer, FPS drops down by 20 or so every time I select unit on missions with fog of war. What should I do? I think it has something to do with transparency

Cranking the line weight as dark as it'll go in Geom sort of works - you'd only see black lines like that on a PVM/BVM. Unfortunately it makes the image dark as fuck. Anyway to fix that?

No.
You'd need to simulate intense glow from everything that isn't black, and you'd need a high-quality CRT shader and at least a 4k monitor for that.

Alternatively, get a CRT monitor and DisplayPort or DVI-I to VGA adapter.

Fact is, I am on a CRT monitor as a secondary/emulation monitor, and it still looks like that.

Anyway, I did fiddle with the gamma settings in CRT-Geom and managed to make it brighter - it's tricky because you have to make sure you don't turn it up so much that colors get washed out. I think I got it looking okay here.

Fellow CRT monitor fag here. You're doing it all wrong. You'll want to read this:

http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Display_FAQ#240p.2F480i

I'd highly recommend using the TVOutTweaks+Interlacing.cgp shader along with a superwide 480p resolution. Some monitors do not like 3840x480, and as such I find 1920x480 does the job all the same. Just halve the horizontal modeline values from the wiki to achieve it.
>>
>>143954858
I tried doing that, it didn't work and I wound up with a really horizontally squeezed image. I'll have to try again with 1920x480.

You have to adjust video_aspect_ratio in retroarch.cfg. Assuming 1920x480, setting it to 4.000000 should do the trick. If that alone doesn't do it, within RetroArch, go to the video settings, under aspect ratio, and scroll through the options until you hit Config.

I had that issue when I first tried too. I forget what I did to fix it, but I've never had the issue again, even after formatting my drives. Be sure to set all of the settings and fuck with your geom options on the monitor.

Yes, it maximizes the number of things that can go wrong, and if you're an autistic person from /g/ that is a good thing and makes you feel special while 'keeping the normies out'. Otherwise no, it's unlikely for emus to compile significantly more performant than normal on the destination computer. Numbers of registers are never where their bottlenecks are and that'll be the only your-machine-specific compilation feature that matters.
>>
>>143963096
If you have an idea of how to do PGO then you can get a 10-15% speed boost in nightlies of PCSX2 on CPU limited scenarios (and presumably you could also get some performance boosts in some other emulators).

But I haven't found any sort of newbie friendly tutorial on how to do that properly and last I tried you can't do that in free versions of MSVC might just be me being blind and retarded though.

I only did a quick test using the stable 1.4.0 release (which I've been told has PGO) and the nighly just before and after.

>>
>>143986860
>Tank controls are really not my thing.
Because they're ass. It's not an opinion, it's a fact, and the reason they were so heavily used in survival horror games was to add to the feeling of helplessness since it was almost impossible to fight back with them, but it was still possible to explore the spooky mansion/fog covered town.

Tomb Raider should have just went full Zelda for it's controls, then everybody would have been happy.
>>
>>143986321
Assuming the source code isn't much different, yeah that would mean PGO makes a significant difference when using the software renderer. Either MSVC sucks with PCSX2, or PCSX2 needs some optimizing.

If you're getting those kind of gains by using a PGO build, then anyone who said x64 wouldn't make much of a difference, is delusional.

If what you said is completely true, then that gives me hope for PS2 emulation, because it sounds like the code is bad enough to the point where a n00b could jump in and make it better.

For PCSX2? There could be a benefit, but there is a 90% chance you don't know how to do compilation flags, so you can't even do that.

For Ishiiruka_x64_dolphin ? Yes, but same problem as with PCSX2.

N64 absolutely needs it because of the huge mess it is hardware wise.

This happens a lot
"If this benchmark is true, this frame won't skip. BTW i tested this on the only CPU of its lineup that handles performance like it do"
Result: Frame skips on every single other rig, until a new generations of CPU/GPUs are powerful enough to actually handle the frame.

While it originally might be a result of poor frame syncing performance(every emulator that isn't Libretro), the result is the result: It misses sync and creates a lot of input lag

/r/Emulation mod here. This is a misrepresentation of our stance on the matter.

You weren't banned for "defending open source devs"- we received a complaint in modmail about you doxxing somebody in the thread, and acted upon it in accordance with reddit's site-wide rules. It wasn't an especially severe case, and I understand if you take issue with our calling it that- but you still revealed personal information about another user that they clearly weren't comfortable having out there in public view on reddit.

If we didn't step in, the site admins would have done so when the user in question let them know. It's one of the few things they don't fool around with.

We don't exercise editorial control over what gets posted on the subreddit beyond removing rulebreaking posts, removing personal abuse, and redirecting tech support posts to the Weekly Question Thread- which is why that particular post got allowed.

The implication that we somehow receive revenue from /r/emulation is risible. We're *subreddit moderators*- at best, we're glorified janitors. It's something we do in our spare time to keep a community centred on a subject we're interested in usable. We certainly don't enjoy generating this kind of drama- it's more work for us, after all.

For what it's worth, I'm sorry it ended up coming to this- your posts were always fascinating to read. Obviously, you're always welcome back, should you wish- so long as you apologise to the user in question.
>>
>>143998509

It's not 'doxxing', he posted it himself on Reddit. As soon as you post something online for the whole world to see, it's no longer 'doxxing', you make it part of the public record. Reddit should know this better than anybody since they sell people's personal details to thirdparties anyway, which invites all sorts of questions as to who the 'real doxxers are, but I digress.

So even the 'doxxing' ban was invalid, but oh well, I'm no longer posting on there anymore anyway. The damage has been done.
