Why is handgunner upkeep/price as high as it is?

The primary appeal of those kinds of firearms is that you can give them en masse to shitty untrained peasants and have them kill things way more expensive than them. Increasing their costs defeats their purpose

I was completely wrong about the awful Goblin leadership being a negative.

It actually works to their advantage, your units always run before getting totally smashed and they're faster than most (maybe all) other infantry so they generally get away. Plus, once they're buffed with magic and the hero skills they're not that bad in combat.

The battles generally devolve into a complete mess with enemy melee chasing my gobbos and my wolves and archers dealing with their ranged and siege units.

It's literally fucking impossible to kill combat focused lords though, just have to feed them units to slow them down. And I'm not sure what I'll do against Chaos when I have to fight them.

I made it to turn 100 with 3 1/2 provinces because of how slow corruption spreads. I lost when Archaeon the fuckboi made a beeline towards me instead of the Empire.

I can't trade with anyone so getting income is a bitch.
Everyone cost so expensive and the skeletons and zombies are trash for expanding in the early game.

Is there something I am missing? I beat the game on hard with Empire and Dwarves but VC seems to stump me.

I think they said the free lords would be rivals in the lore, and I forget the names but that'll probably be greenskins and dorf lords.

Vlad would make the most sense. Krell doesn't make any sense as a lord, should be a unique hero that comes with kemmler. Neferata makes the least sense for a total war game. Sure she CAN fight, but she doesn't want to.

Konrad is probably the most likely I'd say.

Red Duke is silly given the current absence of the Blood Dragons, and isn't pertinent to the vague chronological setting of the game. Mallobaude is the way you would go if you want a Bretonnian vampire. But he would still start in Sylvania so that doesn't make sense either.

Goblins aren't too bad at all.

I'm going with an army comp that's 4-5 fast cav, usually just the basic wolf riders right now, 1-2 rock lobbers so the AI will attack you and then the rest is an even split between melee and ranged gobbos.

Make sure to get your archers to the sides out of the way of the charge then use them to focus down enemy ranged along with charges from your wolves. Your melee line will get fucked up a bit but usually they'll all run and be chased which will just spread all the AI units about. Use your shaman buffs, and make sure to get the unit buff skills for goblin infantry with him.

You'll have to just tar pit the enemy lord, you can't kill him unless he's a wizard type.

This is up to turn 70 against Orcs and Dwarfs anyway, not sure how goblins will handle armies of high tier units.

All the other von Carsteins are practically the same guy role-wise. There's little variation around them except for characterization. Unless they're going to throw out an odd-ball Undead choice that isn't a vampire, a Lamian is the way to go.

Neferata is also one of the oldest and best known VC characters, arguably Warhammer characters as a whole. From that POV she's a logical choice.

I've found the best way to counter the Ork spam is to wait for them to focus on one side and strategically snipe them with one stack while your other goes and takes their cities in the back. Abuse Underway intercepts to get 1v1 stack fights and you can melt an ork horde with minimal losses

When I played Dwarfs on hard the greenskins were a pest to remove, but the top knotz and the bottom right dwarfen faction fought them so much that they ran out of troops. It probably had something to do with me wiping out three greenskin stacks at once and helping the top knotz along towards fighting the greenskins and not me.

Goblin legendary lord when?
I'm thinking about playing a campaign with only goblins, of course it would need to be on normal difficulty or I would need to stack 2-3 armies against each AI on very hard.
Should I use only goblins or do you guys think trolls and giants should be allowed?

I don't get the purpose of the goblin units, even if they cheap, they are not that cheap that you can have 2 goblin armies with the same price as a normal orc one, and still I doubt 2 spearman goblin units beat any normal infantry.
I think CA should increase the number of warriors on those kind of shitty units like goblins, skeletons, zombies, and such.

Can anyone tell me if by modding it would be possible to add back in bridge and settlement battles? Land battles are getting boring and the enemy never assaults my cities that have walls. If they do siege they never actually commit and just starve my men out.

Getting real tired of the same god damn hills and trees land battle. If they were going with only land battles they could have at least made the maps more interesting.

I'm sure CA won't add it back so I'll have to rely on modders. So possible? Easy to do? Hard to do? Could be brought back but expect to see it for custom battles only?

I tried to find use for them but even as meatshields the rout instantly. The only thing worse than the goblin spears are the goblin bows, every single battle 0-5 casualties with them shooting 24/7.

Is it me or are the warscape games a lot harder than previous titles? I played the hell out of R1 and M2 and got them down to a science, no challenge even on highest difficulties vs cheating AI. Then tried S2 and found it a lot more challenging. I think it was the lack of individual control of each settlement, the overall taxation instead of picking the levels for each, garrisons being not as effective at controlling, etc.

Am I way off here?

I'm trying to understand how to use my bonus to defense as a Dwarf.

When an enemy army charges, I normally wait for them to get close then have our ranks clash.

Should I instead be waiting for them to charge -into- my units, and then right click them to use this bonus?

I did some testing with slayers. There was no fight I could find where they outperformed hammerers. Against large units they did about the same, and against infantry slayers are about equal to a normal orc boyz unit.

In other words they're really, really shit. No reason whatsoever to use them.

I think we can all see now how the campaign plays out, while fighting factions you cannot settle is pretty common the majority of the fighting is encapsulated in territories you can settle, then chaos.

The question is, how in the fuck are the expansions going to merge with this? I mean I cannot think of a single incentive for say, an high elf player to even bother going all the way to the old world, then what does chaos do? Set sail and go raze elven lands in the endgame?

And how damn long would a campaign have to last for you to first consolidate your continent, and then fucking sail to another one? It's just absurd, because the other continents will have to be just as big in terms of settlements, since they have to be playable on their own being standalone games.

The only confirmation was finding the animations for it. It likely points to being a unit down the line but it isn't necessarily the first one on the horizon. Blood knights didn't have a specific animation because they didn't need one - they'd use the standard human lancer animation.

The answer to that question will make a lot of Warhammer Fantasy fans angry, but the simple truth is that 40k benefited from being designed later.

What I mean by that isn't "more recent is better," just look at Age of Sigmar for why that's not true.

The WF world is mostly just homages. The map is basically an altered map of Earth's continents, the factions are basically 1:1 exaggerated fantasy versions of historical nations, and most of the fantasy elements are straight from Tolkien or popular culture. There is originality, to be sure, particularly in the Chaos Gods and the themes of the setting.

Warhammer Fantasy was a prototype of 40k, in a way.

Things that worked were carried over, almost without any changes necessary, and given much greater potential creative energy by freeing the technological era away from medieval fantasy. Every faction in 40k is as comfortable fighting with iron age tech as they are fighting with WW2-era or future tech. Except maybe the Tau, but the Kroot still count for them I would say.

40k has more originality, as well as a greater range of homages, and benefits from building on Fantasy's successes while learning from its mistakes.

For comparison, Age of Sigmar looks at 40k and says "well... people like space marines, right?" and then builds a setting around that profit motive without understanding anything about why people like WF or 40k.

It comes down to 2 simple things. First, more kids are into guns and sci-fi than swords and sorcery. Second. If you went to a GW and saw a 40k game and a fantasy game going on, both standard point values. With Warhammer Fantasy, you either like factions build around traditional fantasy references or you hate the setting.

Licence media was never a big deal to GW until fairly recently, it was always kids seeing the shops, looking at minis and getting their parents to get them in on it. Kids didn't get fantasy nearly as much because of the number of minis needed and the price. Friendly fire is on, but units on fire-at-will are smart about it and will hold their fire if they're too likely to hit friendlies.

Cannons and handguns fire in low arcs and won't get many shots behind a unit. Crossbows fire in an arc and can do better.

What you wanna do cannons or handguns is putting them on the flanks or putting up a checkerboard formation with gaps for them to fire through. Or put them on a slope so they fire over your guys (or at the bottom of one for a rear-slope defense).

I dont think Ive ever used Chaos Trolls so far. Ive barely used Forsaken either, although on paper it seems like theyd be really good against Orks, Vamps, marauder tribes, basically anything that doesent wear armor. Chariots and Hellcannons seem kinda mediocre too, although Gorebeast chariots are dirt cheap when it comes to upkeep I guess. Chaos Giants are really fucking good, theyve pretty much replaced battering rams for me. 2 of those will smash a gate in no time at all.

I played it safe for over 100 turns, biding my time by growing my economy and teching up. Then I started going for Border Princes and whatnot.

Chosen are a straight upgrade to chaos warriors, there is really no reason to build these. Hellcannons are your only ranged option and you need them for sieges anyways.

And I always bring one Gorebeast chariot just because its cool and is hilarious to use against weaker infantry.

Unrelated, I don't understand why people sperg out about Empire Greatswords. Their stats are a total joke in comparison to actually good infantry, aka Chosen.

CA have stated that they cut a lot of campaign depth out of Warhammer compared to past titles deliberately in order to make it more accessible to the normies.

Changing something to cater to a larger audience is where there ambition lies.
And it paid off.

Miniatures wargaming is an extremely niche hobby. There can be no debate about this. I know numerous people who play Warhammer vidya or read the Black Library books, but nobody has any experience with the tabletop game. So this is not me talking out of my ass.

And besides, I think that the price of models isn't even the only barrier to the wargaming hobby itself. The majority of people want instant gratification, not sitting around painting some statues or learning rulebooks. Those are barriers for me, as I could care less about the price of them.

In general, there's never one reason for anything. Price can only explain so much about why 40k surpassed Fantasy, not just in the main tabletop game but in the books and vidya as well.

Because I know of things like Rogue Trader, Gorkamorka, Battlefleet Gothic, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Dark Heresy, Fire Warrior, Dawn of War, Eisenhorn, Caiaphas Cain, Gaunt's Ghosts, and on and on and on. All of this just from 40k, and a lot of it is quite old. Some of them older than 40k as we know it today.

Which is good, really. I hope the revival is a success, and stays independent of Age of Sigmar.

But my point stands. 40k is more adaptable and open than WF. It can do more, so there's more people can be attracted to; whether that makes them buy models, spinoff games, books, or vidya.

Yeah Shaggoths are REALLY fucking strong. I think the Giants are more durable though and smash gates faster. Could be wrong about that. I rarely if ever use Hellcannons for sieges actually, since the Chaos Warriors/Chosen butchers anything on the walls at lightning speeds while Shaggoths/Giants battter down the gates super fast. Hellcannons takes FOREVER to blast down a wall section. By the time the hellcannons have torn down a wall, my infantry has usually killed off all opposition on the walls and the gates have been secured so everything that cant climb is already inside.

Are there better methods of dealing with skirmishing cavalry other than Warhounds/Marauder horsemen? Ive gotten a lot of mileage out of warhounds, but Marauder Horsemen die in droves to any kind of missile fire and they take forever to kill anything.

You have no idea how popular warhammer was before those do you? the popularity didn't come from those at all, it came from the tabletop first. Kids bought 40k, talked to their friends about it, their friends that didn't want to buy minis got into it through other means. Everyone knew someone that played warhammer. The older guys who were in that space marine movie literally talked about how all their grandkids or kids were into it at some point.

Not warhammer, which was the entire point, it's why GW spent so long focusing on making sure they had stores everywhere that you could just go to and play the game. It's a big part of why it kicked off, removing barriers to entry got people into it.

So you know even less about what you're talking about than I originally gathered.

Half of what you listed are specialist games made by GW which have fantasy equivalents in dreadfleet, mordheim, etc. Another bunch are black library novels of which the fantasy ones are far better written.

The only licensed things are dark heresy/rogue trader, fire warrior and dawn of war.

40k is more popular, because it is more popular, or should I say was; because it was more popular, it got more people trying to make money from it, because it had that, it got big budget games thrown at it. Dark Omen and Shadow of the Horned rat are better games than any 40k one, but they weren't big budget PC titles. More popularity leads to more exposure, and that popularity started at the lower price and effort entry points. The fact you think fantasy is limited shows just how little you actually know about fantasy.
