Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Patch when?
>>
what is stellaris?
>>
So, Summod soon will be tackling LA (well, technically it's already started to) and there's a number of issues with the era.

First and foremost is Ragha, who have better fire mages than Abysia, better seraphs than Cealum, and have ridiculous sacreds.
Voice opions, ideas, etc.

To get things going, in terms of the sacreds, it's possible to make getting back the rider cost gold.
>>
>>141959181
You could make the post-death gryphon rider have worse stats and equipment, to represent how they're poorly trained squires who just got on the riderless gryphon.
>>
>>141959902
They already lose all xp when they get a new rider to represent this.

Costing gold to get a new rider would be good, it would mean you at least get something for "killing" a bunch of their sacreds even though they come right back after the battle.
>>
>>141959181

Why not just make all of their shit more expensive than the abysia/caelum etc equivalents? Right now the airya seraph and turan sorceror are not only better than their equivalents, they're also substantially cheaper. A mixed-arms nation should pay more than the specialist nations, and somehow Ragha pays the same or less.

>>141959902
Gryphon Riders already have exploss.

Just increasing costs is an option, and will likely be done to some extent regardless of other measures.

>>141959902
That runs counter to the base philosophy of the immortals, that the army was always 1,000 ellite soldiers strong due to having 10,000 non-immortals fighting allongside it, then the best of those being promoted into the immortals to replace losses.

>Everyone is off playing Stellaris edition

Damn, Stellaris is such a disappointment. It's a decent framework and maybe with three years of patches and $250 of DLC it'll even be great (and knowing Paradox that DLC flood will certainly come), but right now it's so fucking broken, boring and lacking in basic features that I can't bear playing it anymore . At least if the AI was capable of putting up a fight it would be somewhat interesting, but it isn't. I guess multiplayer might save it, but Paradox and multiplayer have never been a winning combination.
>>
>>141963461
illfraud confirmed posting in /domg/

Ragha is possibly the worst designed nation in the game at this point, apart from possibly therodos.
>>
>>141959181
You could give each gryphon rider a given number of extra lives, like 4 or 5, which would be restored for gold whenever they're at a fort.
>>
>>141964087
No, no we couldn't, uness you've managed to figure out how to do it in mod code
>>
>>141962103
No that's Arco
>>
Let's just have Summod rewrite the game lore so MA Ermor and Lemuria never happened
>>
>>141959181

Dropping the Seraph and Sorcerer to a & f paths by 1 would be 100% appropriate.

I also don't think it would would be going too far to remove the Blood and Astral (except on a ~25% random). Its not like any era of Caelum has S access as a notable enough feature for it to carry onto a successor state, and Abyssian blood access is associated with the smouldercone Warlock line.

You maybe could make ~everything~ run off coldrec/heatrec. Even the basic infantry. That might not really end up mattering, though, since most people just go Heat anywat.
>>
>>141964438
Couldn't you copy the units several times, changing the firstshape/woundedshape target, until the last one just dies?
>>
>>141964438
Make the griffon shape firstshape into a secondary ridershape instead of the regular rider shape. e.g.,

Recruitable woundedshape->
Gryphon firstshape->
Rider 2 woundedshape->
Gryphon 2 firstshape ->
Rider 3

Etc.
>>
>>141966928
>>141966964
>which would be restored for gold whenever they're at a fort.
I can do the limitted lives thing, yeah, but the ressetting at a fort?
>>
>>141966283
I guess keep the B on the Karapan & Dastur (no random), since it's thematic and with only B1 it's not very tempting to try to use it.
>>
>>141967090
I didn't suggest that part...

Personally, I don't like it, but it could maybe be done with event coding & a ritual spell to reset the 'lives' of (up to) a certain number of Zhayedan.
>>
>>141967090
How were you planing on doing the goldcost with unlimited lives?
>>
>>141967879
I guess you'd have a research 0 ritual that sets the event code, then always-fire events that transform late-stage Zhayedan into early-stage ones, then an event to reset the event code in that province.

Personally, I think just having 5 lives is plenty.
>>
>>141968139
Immortal (recruited) -secondshape-> Griffon -firstshape-> Griffon with -50 gold generated per turn -firshape->Immortal (recruited)
>>
So, how much do you wish that there were commands for things like limited lives rather than using multiple secondshapes, woundedshapes and so on?

>>

>>

Can someone explain the communion calculator? What does extra gems used mean? Are those gems use to cast the spell?
>>
>>141980893
Honestly I'm surprised that the first 6 teams filled so quickly, and then there's been 0 interest. Was expecting more of a steady trickle (though I'm not surprised it hasn't filled yet). Another disciple game starting up at the same time likely didn't help either.
>>
>>141981168
From what I can see Xibalba appears to pretty much own the entire West rim of the map, from the very north all the way down to where Mictlan is.
>>
>>141981372
Basically, can an A2 Arch Theurg, with four slaves, use a gem to cast Fog Warriors?
>>
>>141982231
No. There's some weird fuckery going on with communions that prevents gem spending above the masters base path level unless you meet the path requirement of the spell you are trying to cast.
An A2 caster can't spend more than 2 air gems, so fog warriors doesn't work.
>>
>>141983193
But you'd be good with 8 slaves, right? (and 3 gems ofc)
>>
>>141983607
Yes, eight slaves would work since the arch theurgs would be A5 at that point.

What part did you want explaining?

>What does extra gems used mean? Are those gems use to cast the spell?
Extra gems are gems used above the base cost of the spell.

For an A4 mage casting fog warriors, you need to spend a total of 4 gems (3 for the spell, 1 extra).

Unfortunately communions don't work well with extra gems, as >>141983193 explained. It's not a bug in the calculator, the game just works oddly.

>>
>>141966964
I'm guessing that sum1won isn't in-thread anymore, but if look at other flying sacreds and other sacred cavalry then even getting 3 or 4 lives for 120g is a hell of a deal.
>>
>>141988402
I turned off the sun and my domain, the TRUE domain, also turns off the warmth.

Not that it matters because we're gonna exterminate you anyway. The only place Vans should live is in Vanheim!
>>
>>141988743
Not sure he was in thread to start with, but the issue is more in terms of how it feels, and as having about 30 events to recoup lives in a fort doesn't help the whole event budget, and feels konda arbitrary, I'm personally not thrilled by that as a solution.

However, I asked because the objective isn't to get the solution that I like the most, it's to find the best mechanical and lore wise solution for domg and the wider community.

An idea would be redoing the entire nation along the lines that Sum1won has done Pythium and its cults, so not based just on heat scales but in terms of which Spahbad is crowned as emperor at the time.
>>
>>141989576
I'M GIANTS NOT ELVES YOU ELVISH TWAT.

Oh, I meant to discard the weird fort-regen thing and just cap them at 4 respawns.

I thought about the Pythium method, too. But afaik he's not ready to commit to such major changes in what is ostensibly a balance mod. It'd be a good companion mod, though.

If you're looking to play another game, you should consider joining my blitzserver.net game.
http://blitzserver.net/matches/view/358
I've never played on this map, and wanted to check it out.
Ideally, this game is for 7-14 intermediate players.
The way you join a game on blitzserver is the same as a regular blitz, but instead of an ip you put blitzserver.net, and the port that's listed on the game page (which sometimes changes).

Mictlan is infested with a desire to enslave their populace and sow unrest, and I am just cleaning up the mess caused by terrible leaders pursuing their own agenda.

>>141981959
I do am not the only person whom holds position on the western side of the map. Abysia, Mictlan, C'tis, all four of us own land close to the western border of this Great Map. Sadly, Mictlan was causing unrest and destruction in their wake, destroying the income of their provinces with constant fighting and enslavement. I was needed to bring order back to their lands. The Abysian Nights up north are trying to spread their horrible religion of Death, Unrest, Slothful living, and the Drain of stifled ingenuity and discovery. Lanka will will be helping me in the endeavor of ridding that Religion of evil from the Great Land of Oeridia. Their willingness to work to right the wrongs perpetrated by terrible politicians is commendable.

It's somewhere between Master of Orion 2, Sword of the Stars 1, Distant Worlds, Aurora, or I guess Galactic Civilizations 2, but I personally don't like that last one as much. It all depends on what you're looking for in a game and how much autism you can tolerate.

LA Atlantis has pretty beefy pd commanders. Fenrir probably built up a lot of fatigue in buffing, then ran in with low HP from enemy Dom, and got one-shot by a magic weapon.
>>
>>142027635
He moved his SC pretender into 10 enemy dominion, and died because he had 1 hp.
>>

>>
>>142029856
>son of Fenrir

>>
>>142013275

I loved the shit out of Star Ruler too, but that Scale system needed a serious overhaul. I know it's neat that you could create space stations/ships the size of solar systems, but scaling things up to arbitrary levels just... doesn't work like that. And it just created more needless micro-managing, not to mention the learning curve of figuring out what the fuck scale you were supposed to be building at any given time.

Did Star Ruler 2 fix any of that?
>>
>>142031263

It splits the discount evenly, starting with the primary path. So a Fire Brand costs 4F+4E with Forge Bonus: 2. It'd cost 3F+4E for a mage with Forge Bonus: 3.
>>

I'm tempted to agree, although it is quite impressive for being made by one guy.
I also think dominions does a much better job of being playable than games like DF and Aurora despite them also having a lot of depth to their gameplay, which is why I have hundreds of hours in dominions but only a few hours in either of those games.
>>
>>142037448
Dominions has gone through a more iterative design, with 4 versions released and each version improving on the last one. Games like DF just keep adding more shit to the same janky base and while the end result is definitely impressive in some ways, it doesn't leave as much room for re-evaluation and improvement of older concepts.

Also, it pays to keep in mind that DF is the basically the hobby product of a single autistic mind, while Dominions, while still indie and essentially 'amateur' in some ways, is a proper commercial product.

Don't people generally agree that Xibalba is one of the strongest EA nations? The only EA nations I consider stronger are Lanka and possibly Mictlan.

They're a bit vulnerable to an early rush, but once you get something other than bat troops they're amazing and very hard to fight.

>same nation fucks shit up in all 3 games

in game 2 it was more like they got their shit fucked up. Being reduced to pulling a couple dozen slaves per turn, when their northern neighbor was pulling a couple HUNDRED per turn (given what the scouts showed on how many provinces were being bloodhunted), meant that Xibalba pretty much lived at Lanka's leisure.

And that was with the three attackers flailing horribly.

Xibalba is also not an ideal rush target, due to bat raids making it painful (but they have no way to prevent themselves from actually just dying early). They're also incredibly weak to Perpetual Storm, and on a lesser note to Illwinter.

>>142042190
That was LAST game, which hit around turn 33ish? I forget off the top of my head, but it was further along than this one.

I have no intel on Lanka or Xibalba in this game, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were pulling in 100 or so slaves already, but probably not multiples of hundreds just yet.

Literally the most gem income out of anyone barring globals. Blood 9 is needed for Damage Reversal, a very important spell. If you think I was just bloodhunting in three provinces, then perhaps you should check to see where all the members of the second tier are at. Hint: everywhere. You don't need E higher than 3 unless you intend to cast globals or forge artifacts. Earthpower, communions and gems carry you the rest of the way.

The very turn you subbed in I not only won the largest battle in the game to date, I also strategically fucked over Pythium's backdoor invasion by outplaying him not ONCE, but TWICE in the SAME PROVINCE in the SAME TURN.

Do not mistake me for a fool. A fool would not have lasted that long.
>>
>>142042905
you are a fool because your 2nd tier where everywhere, they didn't have sanguine dosing rods, you only had 44 slaves, you had only 3 vampires. literally all your blood hunting was on russian's capital which had 7 blood hunters hunting in 142 Unrest and 82 heavy gold/resource ulmish troopers sent to patro. Sorry senpai but your shit, also you can not underestimate how good Turn 1 army of gold/lead is. and again turn 56 and only 3 FUCKING VAMPIRES
>>
>>142043091
Again, tbf, if he's spamming wrathful skies Army of Gold/Lead is somewhat counterintuitive.
>>
>>142043218
wraithful skies was good since pythium basically had a shit on of chaff. RoS also worked just as well since Pythium couldn't cast Fog warriors but casted blood rain instead

Okay yeah I hope Pythium and Man kick your ass. It's sad to see the great Reich fall under such incompetent leadership.
>>
>>142043465
Wrathful skies is ALWAYS good, if you can prevent your own troops from dying to it.

It's the reason why units with shock resist are so fucking good. And the only sources of those I know of are Caelumites and Storm Demons, but I'm probably missing some somewhere.
>>
>>142043640
Uhhh, LA Ulm mages have 0 Prot. You gonna need to use Army of Lead/Gold later on or they're all gonna die.

Or I suppose you could be fancy and equip them all with items.
>>
>>142043640
you don't patrol with rangers or hummies. you hunt with cheap chaff, Monkies, goblins, hawks, anything like that, also you aren't using rangers you were using Halberds/pikemen

Army of X is proper endgame material for anything, just don't use it with wraithful skies

you only had 2 crystal matrixes, you should have a shit ton more

your unrest on slav capital was 117 when I took over, and using only 80 men to patrol for 7 hunters like not hunting at all

insulting grammar doesn't excuse shit gameplay

and lets not forget it's fucking turn 57, you only had 3 vampires, two of them counts 1 of them a proper vampire, wasn't blood hunting every single province that had a little over 5k, didn't have sanguine dosing rods for better slaves, basically no end game options.

Also damage reversal is a shit spell easily countered by MR

>>
>>142045225
except when I loaded the turn that wasn't there, and I dont' remember seeing any souless rise during that battle, also Rush of Str isn't that important when most of your battle was won through RoS and Fog warriors. If you had casted blood rain that woudd have been interesting. Also if you feel 7 blood hunters is "good" by turn 55 you are deluded. You should have had at least 20 hunters minimal going by this time. Pulling in hundreds of slave a turn, Summoning vampires every turn
>>
How petty do you have to be to shittalk the person you're subbing for? Based on this exchange, you're both retarded scrubs anyways.
>>
>>142046441
I subbed out of a favor to a friend who isn't even the ulm player. The guy already submitted a turn setting himself AI and left the admin to scramble to get a player to sub for him.
>>
>>142046441
He's sandbagging, probably.
>>

Thank you, Adolf Steeler, for helping me appreciate what I've been given.
>>
>>142048108
no problem. this is why you should always communicate with your sub instead of running off and leaving other players to pick up your pieces instead
>>
>>142042058
Even surviving is pretty impressive against 3 attackers (of presumably comparable size). I suspect that may have been down to a difference in skill rather than nation choice, though.

>Xibalba is also not an ideal rush target, due to bat raids making it painful (but they have no way to prevent themselves from actually just dying early).
Yeah, they can make a rush painful for the attacker. However, they're probably still going to lose if you hit them before they get mage support ready.

>They're also incredibly weak to Perpetual Storm, and on a lesser note to Illwinter.
Illwinter is limited to one nation who is likely to get invaded by other people to stop the attacks.

Perpetual Storm is a problem for Xibalba, but it's mainly a problem on the strategic map. They still have most of their toolkit for fights. Unless you make use of it to outmaneuver Xibalba with teleporting or storm-immune forces, Perpetual Storm will mainly just slow them down to moving a province at a time.
>>
Xth for Waen is small and cute
>>
>>142048701
>Perpetual Storm
That reminds me, does anyone have experience with it as Caelum? Being able to cast Stormpower more easily is a big plus, and so is being able to ground some of your troops such that they do their blocking duty better (while still being able to use storm-fliers when needed), but you lose strategic mobility on your A2 casters and that's a huge blow in my opinion. Anyone have experience with that, was it worth it?
>>
>>142048701
That was most certainly a difference in skill. And somewhat a difference in charisma, as Xibalba was capable of bringing in more allies against Pan, despite being Xibalba, and roleplaying as Trump.
>>
>>142049549
Waen is literally Belgium to Janvaldorf and Gyth's France and Germany.
>>
>>142050609
no, Waen is Vietnam, Gyth is Soviet union
>>
>>142048701
I can confirm that I was not in a good place in Armemgeddon, what with the horrible people in charge of the provinces in my vicinity. Lanka in that game was very clear when they talked to me that they wished for me to stay alive as long as possible to receive all the global hate, and nation attacks while they focused soley on Research, site searching, and Summoning undead until they felt comfortable killing 4-5 people simultaneously, at which point they would roll over myself and the weakened nations around me.

And of note, Perpetual storm does more than just reduce map movement for Xibalba. With Perp. Storm up Xibalban units cannot fly in battles, removing any usefulness of their basic units, and severely limiting their Sacreds' combat ability. With proper mage support and armies scripted with no flight in mind, it isn't a big deal, but the initial turns before you have the setup can be a massive blow to Xibalba, and can easily lose them a war if done at the right time.
>>
>>142050404
It pissed me off how much more reasonable and affable Xibalba was despite Trumping it all up. I was literally one turn from taking a chunk out of Pan and feeding it to the bats before Badmin ruined it.
>>
>>142050404
See, that's what I like to hear! You, Sir, have a good eye for what is, and what isn't! If you just so happen to be in MemegeddonIII, I would absolutely like to talk with you. We might actually be the whole map apart, but I'll be damned if I won't find a way to work with, support, and make gains from someone that can recognize the facts when he sees em.
>>
>>142050846
Of further note, Ozzies without flight are really just shitty Se'ir.
>>
>>142051350
>working with a diplomonster Xibalba

no thanks.
>>
>>142046718
To be fair, setting yourself AI means the admin doesn't need to find someone to do it if there aren't any subs. And he said he was going AI in thread ahead of time.

It's a lot better than the majority of people who just go AI or stale silently when they leave, even if he didn't give much notice.

>>142049931
I've never used it as Caelum, but when playing them I find the mobility to be the best part of the nation. I'd probably need to be hurting enemy mobility at least as much to consider casting it.

On the other hand, I tested Perpetual Storm in singleplayer and your mages still have 2/8 movement (and ignore terrain penalties). So that's less of an issue than I expected, though being unable to attack from multiple provinces away is a big loss.

>and so is being able to ground some of your troops such that they do their blocking duty better
Just use line formation, I'm fairly sure fliers will walk in that case.

>>142050846
By the time I had to deal with it as Xibalba, pretty much all my armies had phased out the standard bats. Perpetual Storm lost me a turn of movement orders, but nothing else (and I was expecting war so I had bat squads stealthed in his lands already).

I guess if someone rushed directly for Perpetual Storm and cast it during midgame things might be different.

>>142051443
Even without flight they're nearly as good as Se'ir, which is amazingly strong.

They're also about 30% cheaper than Se'ir once you get to Rain of Jaguars.
>>
>>142052173
I admit I was pretty harsh. To give some credit His early and mid game was very good and Ulm won't die anytime soon.
>>
>>142052173
>Just use line formation, I'm fairly sure fliers will walk in that case.
Wow, I didn't know that.
>>
>>142052528
I remember if you use hold and attack it messes with that line formation stopping flying thing, of course in perp. storm it won't matter
>>
>>142051574
Then don't look at it as working with me. I don't go into a meet thinking, "Man, can't wait to help out this guy!" No Way, José! I walk into that meeting thinking, "How am I gonna make the best deal, the one that's gonna get me what I want, and make them so happy about it they want to do business again?" An attitude like that is what you need when you want to make a deal with someone. You know who goes around, stepping around issues, refusing to work with someone because it might help them? Liers, cheats, scumbags, the worst kind of people. You aren't that kind of person, I can tell; a person like that can't acknowledge the strengths of others positively.

Now, remember that when you go in to make a deal, you are not doing things for the other guy, you are doing things for you, and the other guy is going to help you get there. You walk into a talk with an attitude like that, and your gonna get things done. Now I can see if you don't think you are gonna get a good deal, and that's why you want to skip the talks. I can completely agree, before I go up to someone, I think-I think, what's the worst thing that could happen? And if it's something I can't deal with, something that isn't helping me, then I won't do it. I'll say "No thanks, I'd rather not," and find some other way to go about it. I can agree if that's what you are doing. But never turn down a deal because it helps the other guy; helping the other guy is what's letting you get what YOU want out of it. You're a good guy, a smart guy, I trust you'll make your own decisions, and believe me when I say I sincerely hope they will turn out great for you.
