Nah, I used to think like you. You just need to go deeper. Get depressed to the point it turns into anger:

"Damn you, vomit-inducing cesspool known as /evn/! I'm going to make the best VN ever by doing exactly the opposite you penisheads say!"

Once you accomplish that state of mind, you'll work every day like a madman.

I meant theoretically.

Clearly it's always better to release a VN for free.
I don't want to be spending money on high quality VN. Save that shit for low quality VN. This is actually good. Why would you want to charge money? To cock block me from playing? For profit? You don't fucking need shit. Just release it for free like a good dev.
>>
>>141769163
But will it get more attention if it's free or if it's commercial?
>>
>>141769351
If it's free, obviously. There's nothing to complain about a FREE game. If has a price tags, fuckers will be all "This isn't worth 100$, worst game ever"

>>141769745

>>
>>141769838
Someone who isn't a dumbass. Besides, even if a game is free, doesn't mean you don't need to do marketing. If you want people to read your shit, get people to read your shit.
>>
>>141769718
>lucid9 is free

fools...
>>
>>141770003
But it is. Steam says so.
>>
>>141769838
Do you really think you can't even get people to play your game for free? Is your art absolute trash?

The same can be said about games that have a price tag. You need to do everything in your power to convince them it isn't.

But on this note, I'd rather you sell your game. Why do so many people opt to not sell their game? I feel like they are potentially damaging our market.
>>
>>141770148
People want to give back to their community who pirated VNs at no cost. If you put a price tag, you're on the wrong side of the community. If you want me to support you, just put a pay whatever the hell I want.
>>

So what are "some other big-name visual novels currently available in English"?
>>
>>141770253
This. Why would someone pay for your shitty game when they can easily pirate a professional-quality Japanese one?
>>
>>141770101
Part 1 is free. The other parts might still end up costing money. Have you learned nothing from Sunrider? The first hit is free to get you hooked.
>>
>>141770680
>Part 1
Fuck multi-part VNs, I hate this trend.
>>
>>141770792
If people were willing to not shit on full games at their full price, then there wouldn't be a need for multi-part. But nah, the Steam Community is fucking cancer, so that doesn't work out at all.
>>
>>141770924
It should just be for free, obviously.
>>
>>141770924
Sales tend to drop off for later installments anyway.

It's also not just about what buyers are willing to pay, it can be because the game still isn't finished and the devs need the money from the earlier parts to continue the story. This can end badly when they don't get enough to complete it, or loss the staff necessary to do so.
>>
>>141770924
The problem with multi-parts is they often get left hanging or it takes a long time for the next part to be released. Besides, it's not fun to only play a partial VN, I like it all in one.
>>

>>
How do you guys make good trailers for evns?

There's not much to show, so it's like just certain scenes that hook people, I guess? Preview of music perhaps. Maybe even some CGs to really attract those people who like art.
>>
>>141772473
Music and slides of random dialogue and scenes, and flash by some info about what kind of game it will be.
>>
Don't you guys ever think EVNs are weird? It's like you took out the interaction part of games and focused on only that without the whole gameplay part. It's like an incomplete medium, it's so awkward. It would be majorly better if you just did gameplay really.

>>
>regular edition is pay what you want
>enhanced edition adds extra character routes, fanservice events etc and costs some money
>the idea being that if you liked the game you can support it and get some new content too
Is this a decent plan? I don't really expect to make any money at all but happy merchant ancestors are calling to me through the ages.
>>
>>141774271
>>enhanced edition adds extra character routes, fanservice events etc and costs some money
It depends, will you be really missing out if you don't get this or will the regular edition be an enjoyable and complete on its own? It really depends on this. You also need to hit that sweet spot of adding enough content that it's worth paying for but not so much that people will be pissed you didn't just include it in the normal game.
>>
>>141774271
That's a legit terrible idea.
You're supposed to do what the nips do and make the extra routes and fanservice events a whole new VN itself.
This means they should both just be free.
Paying for fanservice? You like prostitution, anon?
>>
>>141774271
Yeah, that sounds good. If I liked the main one, I would definitely want to buy the next one to support you or just because it really is good.
>>
>>141774271
at this point the "pay what you want" version is basically just a demo

also by charging a set dollar amount for the "full game" you are basically removing the chance that people will pay more than that for the PWYW version

idk I don't see the point
>>
>>141774453
>>141774690
Yeah picking the rght amount of content is going to be tricky. I was thinking the actual story line with everything resolved and stuff, 1 romance route and friendship routes for the rest of the characters for the free version, and more SoL "the crew is hanging out together" stuff plus romance subroutes for the remaining main cast members in the "enhanced".
>>141774531
>prostitution
hell yeah I'd sell my daughterus to faceless old men for a quick buck
>>141776682
Eh, I just want people to play it mostly. I see the point about no one paying for the free version if there's a better one available, but t b h if I don't think people will shell out money for a game from a no-name dev (and obviously I'll try to make it look as good as possible, but there is a good chance it will still be average at best), yet I still want it to be read.

>>
>>141785597
Looking nice. Maybe it's just me, but I find it a bit unappealing when choices are that large and obscure that much of the sprite and background, especially when they lack opacity like the choice you have selected.
Who's the artist for that background?
>>
>>141787992
Thanks! Dao is the background artist, they have a thread on lemma right now. I agree with you also, it really does obscure the art. I wasn't sure if it would be all that much of a big deal since the choices are up fairly infrequently, but since you mentioned it I'll look into what I can do about that.
>>
>>141785597
What will happen if there will be 4 choices ?

>>141788478
I'd need to reposition things for sure, and it may look a bit cluttered. I'll most likely just avoid having four, the GUI was designed with three in mind.

If people pirate your game, then it makes sense not to care what they think, since they're not someone who's going to support your work.
>>
>>141801035
Okay.
>>
>>141801160
Read the thread first, that's not what the issue was.

As for not caring about the opinion of pirates - well, yes and no. Pirates are just gamers, and many of them steal some things and buy some other things, or steal one game and then support you in the future. Depending on what their complaint about your game is, it might be worth listening because it might represent larger reactions.
>>
>>141801160
They liked your game enough to play it, but not enough to support it. What could the reason be? Assuming that there's some critical issue that renders them incapable of wanting to buy it (like a certain word spelled incorrectly you missed the entire time) it'd be worth listening to them. Anyone who's just a cheapskate or has a moral aversion to genuinely supporting you will, in all likelihood, not bother wasting their and your time explaining their rationale.
>>
>>141801669
>They liked your game enough to play it, but not enough to support it. What could the reason be?
Money.
Almost always.
Some people simply do not want to pay anything, ever.

The number of people who will pirate a game to see if it is really (whatever they want) and then pay for it if it is? Well, these people do exist, but they're a minority. More commonly you run into people who liked the game enough to play it all the way through, and then find some minor issue to nitpick and claim that this is why they won't support it. "Oh, it didn't have voice acting, it's cheap, I won't pay for that." (Maybe that's why they can't afford voice acting, genius)
>>
>>141801883
I said
>anyone who's just a cheapskate ... will likely not bother wasting their and your time explaining why

>minor issue to nitpick and claim that this is why they won't support

>>
>>141826634
Its early access consists of an episodic 4 part release and beta testing. Part 4 isn't out yet. Once it is and they apply whatever fixes, that's when the game will be released.
>>
>>141770003
You'd be surprised to know how involving money with our project would make everything so much more complex. I don't think I'm qualified enough to handle budget for Lucid9, and it would bring more infighting if anything. Heck, even accepting mere donations sounds like a minefield. Unless a lot of people in the team start going "Hey I can't continue working on this project because of financial reasons", involving money would have a greater chance killing the project atm.

>>141769351
You'll get a lot of attention as a free game, granted you manage to get featured on the popular release section of Steam. But you'll easily get at the very least 10k downloads. (Though only around 20-30% of the people will bother playing). It's an efficient way to build a fanbase, but it's a very long term investment if you plan to use this fanbase to sell future paid works.

They worked on the game. They take money for their efforts. They also spend some of that money on improving the game, which would not be possible if they hadn't charged for it.

In general, sales of any one product, especially with indie games, go towards funding future projects.

>>
>>141837694
Writing and releasing a video game is not 'benevolent work'. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to do, obviously, but it's hardly a great and noble gift bestowed upon mankind. Don't blow things out of proportion.

There's an argument that can be made that giving away commercial-length work for free is scabbing. Personally, I think that's also overreacting because the amount of such 'scab' work that can be produced is naturally so limited that it's not really undercutting the industry. On the other hand, any time you hear someone say "Why should I pay for your game when Katawa Shoujo is free?", you will see exactly why some people do get upset about free work.
>>
>>141838174
But why would anyone want to pay for your game when they can pirate professional studio made 500 hour ones from Japan?
>>
>>141838343
Because it's cheap and not an expensive 80+ dollar experience like they charge.
>>

>>

Can I have some advices?
I want to make "brothel sim" game. But there's too many "brothel sim"s.
I need a unique name for that game, but it should be theme-related.
>>
>>141838953
>He said they were using the money they made to improve the VN, but how so, unless you're buying a more expensive artist?
Exactly that.
Their first release was shit because they couldn't afford an artist so they just cut and pasted bits of the sprites and called them CGs. It was terrible.
They took the money and hired an artist.
>>
>>141839208
Make it gay and call it BRO-thel sim.
>>
>>141839268
I don't think you should even sell a game if the art is that bad.
>>
>>141839369
Perhaps not. But if they hadn't sold it, they wouldn't have raised the money to pay for better art. Sometimes you gotta take a chance in business.
>>
>>141838485
But no one has to pay the 80 dollars, VN players are spoiled because they get fancy Japan games for free, so why would they shell out money for your shit?

>>
>>141839529

Someone who pirates EVERYTHING isn't going to be your audience, anyway.
>>
>>141839183
And if you're independently wealthy, you can afford to perform this 'free' work for a year.
>>
>>141839602
Why not?

I honestly wouldn't care if I had a commercial VN and people pirated it, I wouldn't encourage it but in the end I just want people to play it.
>>
>>141839208
There are tons of synonyms for brothel, use a thesaurus
>>
>>141839529
It's the principle of it. You can say that something isn't necessarily worth 80 dollars, but is it really the same thing for a very cheap game? Besides, as >>141839602 says, if they're pirating absolutely everything they aren't really on my radar. Not like they'd play it if it was free anyway, so why should you, or I, or anyone else, cater to them?
>>
>>141839612
You just spend all your meager free time slaving away at the game as a labor of love, no matter how much blood, sweat, tears and sleep it costs you. You have too be dedicated.
>>
>>141838340
It depends on how you see benevolent work I guess. I agree it doesn't compare to stuff like helping miserable people and giving them shelter and food. I do consider that spending your time in order to give free entertainment for people is something charitable, and is not that different from people who go retirement houses in order to play games and distract the pensioners.

It's also worth considering that a free product is the best gateway for people to try out a new medium. Sure, you'll get a few cheapskates who will pirate everything (maybe more than a few), but you'll also get people who will be willing to pay to read other works (granted their gateway was a positive experience).
>>
>>141839760

>>
>>141841126

>>
>>141840785
Probably all sprites. More flexibility. If you can get full body sprites, you can try to play with the perspective of your background as well.
>>
>>141840949
Assume equivalence. Are sprites more useful than CGs?

>>141841653
Could you elaborate on that? Not that I don't see what you mean, it's more that I want to hear your perspective.
>>
>>141842175
>Are sprites more useful than CGs?
You can get far more mileage out of a single sprite than you can out of a single CG, which is why the costs don't allow it to be a free choice. Telling the same amount of story in CGs needs a lot more pieces of art created. However, those pieces will be better-matched to the events than the sprites would be, and have more dramatic impact.
>>
>>141842175
Are you really going to make a full CG for every single scene and char? Either your VN is very short, has a LOT of text and uses a NVL style, or text and art won't match.
>>
>>141838340
>On the other hand, any time you hear someone say "Why should I pay for your game when Katawa Shoujo is free?", you will see exactly why some people do get upset about free work.
I don't. Make your product better than what's available for free and maybe you won't get that remark.
>>
>>141843327
>your VN is very short
That's the idea. From my current estimates it'll only be about an hour or so. If it's a short VN like that, would it make more sense to go all-in on CGs?

What time length (in hours) would a VN have to be to justify a $10 price tag on Steam? Suppose I'm looking at like 3 different endings, with lots of minor dialog choices along the way and then the actual "point of no return" branching happens 30-60 minutes before the final conclusion. I assume that the total word count across all 3 routes matters less than the total amount of time from start to end.

It's not all about the length, it's about the satisfaction. Length is only part of it.

I could say "Your game should have at least 5 hours total content" but that might not match up well with your particular game.

A 5 hour game for $10, some people are going to say it's amazingly great value and others are going to complain that it's super short and overpriced.

I paid full price for a JVN that I played for five hours before deciding it was a piece of shit, it happens. If only that game had been $10. I've paid $15 for VNs I 100%ed in four hours and been okay with that as long as I enjoyed those four hours.

Having pirated the game myself, yeah, it's different from the demo. Same gameplay, but it does some kinda neat, kinda gimmicky stuff with the storyline.

Shan Gui has been removed from Steam. If you have an unredeemed key, it's now useless.

>Read more. He said the demo reviews won't cover what the full game does.
Sure. But whose fault is that?

When you put out a demo, you put it out to attract interest in the full game. If your demo is not representative of the full game, you done fucked up. (Unless your demo is better than the real thing, in which case you're just ruthless.)

You can't simply scold people for failing to appreciate the content that they didn't get to see. If your demo is not hooking them and you think the full game would, you need to change your demo.

It's never been about the language. The original fans of VN created the label EVN to group away the weirdo fuckers who like western shit as well as all other types of weirdo bullshit. That isn't VN, so fuck them. They are now EVN. The faggots in EVN are discriminated against and they don't even know it because they aren't the original people who liked VNs. They came after and come from all fucking places. It's disgusting. They honestly don't even deserve the tag VN in their name, but it's not us who gets to label shit. Authors label shit. You should always be striving to be a VN, that is JVN, but we don't need the J because we're the original movement and are making VN, not JVN or EVN. There's a reason there's success in VNs and not "EVNs".

Sekai likely doesn't want to split profits. They have denpasoft for their own 18+ releases. They also are focused on Steam and likely don't care as much about the possibilities for 18+ works. JAST USA and MangaGamer even have titles on Nutaku's storefront.
>>
>>141915391
>two unlikable people die
If that's the case, is it even worth reading? Isn't that a textbook case of "I don't care what happens to these people". Or maybe it's like one of those bad flicks where you want the protagonists to die horrible deaths because they are just so stupid?
>>

Basically this. Though the characters have enough humanization as kids to make them at least a bit sympathetic when they die when they're older.

On a serious note tho, I'll actually try to befriend her IRL. Hoping for discount CG art. How does this usually work out for those with EXP?

>programming

>>
>>141978457
This. People are used to Japanese VAs with English text because of translations, but it's really fucking weird to have the VAs speaking a language the game isn't even available in. You might as well just make it a full JVN, and there's no point in making a JVN unless your trying to advertise it to Japs.

For some reason English voice acting for things like VNs sounds like shit 99% of the time, so I just wouldn't use VAs. That's just me though.
>>
>>141978620
But it's so hard and boring to have to go over all the words I wrote down because I didn't bother putting quotation marks around them the first time

>>141978894
>English voice acting for things like VNs sounds like shit 99% of the time
It's something about the vowels man. English vocalization needs to put too much stress on consonants to sound cute, in general.
Or it might be just because the VAs are not very good due to budget constraints, dunno...
>>
>>141979932
It is hard and boring, doesn't mean it should take a whole year to be done when there's hardly fuck all writing in 4 years. What the fuck are you even doing? If you're not spending at least 5 hours into your VN each day, you're not working hard enough and should really just realize that you shouldn't make promises that you can't keep.
>>
>>141980094
For me, it's that I can judge the delivery of English much better without even thinking about it so I pick up on weaknesses much, much more.

I may know a few words of Japanese, but mostly I'm only listening to the emotional quality of the delivery. Narmy, ridiculous lines don't register. Squeaky-high girls don't sound so silly.
>>

>For me, it's that I can judge the delivery of >English much better without even thinking about it so I pick up on weaknesses much, much more.

>>
>>141980094
While the nuances between the languages themselves is a huge hurdle to overcome, the budget is the main killer. You can hear examples of good voicework in, say, Disney cartoons, and video games, which are very high paying jobs for voice actors. The average amateur EVN simply doesn't have the ability to match that.
