Unless there is a certain group on the server I'm looking at that I know would be good with little variables, it is a better bet to just stay on my current server. Progression is nice, but it's very nice to take it at your own pace with a group that is competent enough to learn.

Prior to Heavensward I'd have said no, because the nature of raiding in this game (ie: That it's just 8 players in a static, completely divorced from the rest of the server) means that what server you're on shouldn't matter except in extreme circumstances.
But at this point it pretty much is exactly those extreme circumstances, and the concentration of decent players on Gilgamesh versus any other English-speaking server is huge enough that you should go if you want to raid and don't already have a group on another server.
I'm lucky enough to be in a group that I like on a non-Gilgamesh server, but if it ever falls apart I'm heading there immediately.

Having the BLM do it would probably be better overall, actually. MNKs can "turret" for more dps than BLM in the very specific context I'm referring to. Especially when they don't really have TP problems in A4S besides maaaaaybe in last phase, and even then the only "problem" is missing GCDs to charge meditation. Yeah, it's a mess. During Coil there were a bunch of servers with really active raiding scenes. Excalibur was good, Sargatanas wasn't entirely just one FC of note, even Balmung had a really active scene. And even the low-pop servers, other than maybe Mateus and Zalera, had raid communities as active as today's Excalibur/Balmung.
It's a total disaster, and SE is fucking dreaming if they think that a cross-server Party Finder is going to improve anything. They need to rethink just about everything that they're doing with raiding if they don't want it to just die off.

I always was fond of the ability to choose which boss you fight in some loose order, with just a couple of bosses lined up one after another, but then every boss needing to be cleared before accessing the final boss. That requires different game design though, and if they did that it would probably be pseudo-gated by the gear drops and some bosses just being too difficult for the entry gear to that raid.

The vast majority of the game's "midcore" population were not shitposting about it being too easy, because it was almost perfectly tuned for the majority of the playerbase. They need to attack it from a number of angles.
First, the lockout system is way too draconian. Let people do the fights in any order they want, as long as they've cleared the previous fight at least once. Give two-chest clears for groups where 7/8 people haven't cleared (this is not in any realistic way going to lead to people getting too much loot), and let people flag themselves as a non-looting helper even if they haven't cleared that week, so you can help other groups even if your static hasn't raided yet that week. And for the month leading up to a new raid tier, remove the weekly lockout entirely.
Second, fix the raid design. The difficulty needs to actually be around the difficulty of Coil. Don't have stupid shit like Faust DPS check gatekeepers on the first fucking turn; the first turn is supposed to be really easy to get into. Lower DPS checks in general. You didn't need to optimize DPS or to have tanks and healers doing significant DPS to beat most of First and Second Coil with minutes to spare before running into an enrage, as long as you had a clean run. One DPS check fight per tier is enough; otherwise, enrages should just be a safeguard against 6-healer turtling strats or resurrecting through a dozen deaths, not something that comes down to the wire on a clean pull.
Story Mode raids are a good idea, but they shouldn't be released before or at the same time as the regular raid. The Hard Mode should come out in the progression patch, and the Story Mode should come out either during the catch-up patch, or even during the NEXT progression patch, so people who missed it can get the story. They should still have Savage modes, but they should be in the style of SCoB, where the Savage mode comes out during the catch-up patch, and has only vanity-based rewards. Only this time, don't fuck it up and make Savage share a lockout with the Hard Mode.

On your second point, the team has already shown that they can do proper gate keepers during the first turn of a raid cycle. T1 ADS was great as a simple "can your party work together" test where you had very simple things to do (silence High Voltage, keep adds away from the boss, dodge aoes) that had real consequences (un-dispellable paralysis, permanent buffs to the boss, high damage when most players only had ~3.5k HP at the time) but wouldn't immediately lead to a wipe.
If they could do something like ADS again as a gatekeeper, it would be great. Hell, I wish they'd just do another raid turn like T1 again. That atmosphere and decent length to it all is sitll unmatched.

Yeah, I didn't mention ADS because the post was already getting too long, but I agree that it was a good gatekeeper. It was basically a raid encounter in microcosm, with multiple mechanics, some light coordination of mechanics, split duties between main and offtank (which obviously also splits attention between healers), with a gradual ramp-up of incoming damage until finally ending with a (soft) enrage. It was pretty much an ideal gatekeeper encounter.
I still ultimately just don't really like gatekeeper minibosses, though. If your progress were saved like after ADS, that would be alright, but otherwise I find that they're mainly just hassles that keep PUG groups from going as smoothly as possible, and I think they really should be making an effort to make PUGs as smooth and painless as possible.
Speaking of which, something that I forgot to mention earlier that they should also be working on is reversing this trend of raid encounters getting longer and longer. The T4 enrage started at seven minutes, the T8 enrage jumped all the way up to eleven minutes, the T12 enrage went up to 12 minutes, and the A3S and A7S enrages have been closer to twelve and a half (and all of these fights are pretty clearly tuned with the intent that they actually last all the way until enrage, unlike something like T7). Excessively long fights other than the final fight in a raid tier should really be the exception, not the rule.
