Learning Ryu can be helpful but isn't necessary. If he is going to have a more enjoyable time with another character he should just go for it. If he is not a good fit for Ryu at all and doesn't want to play him then forcing 50 hours with Ryu will just put him off the game. He won't ignore those fundamentals as he still needs to deal with them, Ryu also won't teach you everything

I wouldn't make an universal item system, that would only work if all the playable characters are alchemists. Instead I would vary it per character. One could just use special moves that are items, another could be like Faust, another one could have some kind of item meter where the more she charges it the more item quality raises for her item moves etc.

I wouldn't do any gimmicks like soku decks or sfxt gem loadouts.

Oh yeah, that makes sense. The way I had thought about it was to make it like Faust for everyone but then give them additional stuff on top of that. For exemple Rorona has a bunch of different bean and energy attacks in the games so she could use those and wouldn't be as reliant on items as the others. Totori can duplicate items, which I thought could basically let you re-use an item (Basically one special is to use a random item and another special is to use the previously used item) and outside of items could also use Chims for other specials. I'm stumped on Meruru tough since she has no specials in her own game so maybe I could do like you said and make each item a different special.

I don't feel like giving everyone random moves is a good idea. It can work maybe for one character, but it should not be a common thing and if I can I would just avoid it. As I said there are lots of ways to make items interesting and fun.

And I guess sin is an OK comparison but not exactly what I was thinking about. Less damage (though non necessarily bad, just not sin damage) and more movement, also the fireball(s) shoul be meterless and be a good part of her neutral.

I disagree, damage scaling is a bandaid mechanic. First reason it's there to let players do big "epic" combo without the damage getting retarded, second reason it's there is insurance in case the players find really big combos the developers didn't think possible. If you keep the combos short it's unnecessary.

Damage scaling is a bad mechanic because it's unrealistic. If I keep hitting you it won't do less damage, it'll do more as I'm making the wound worse. In fact, damage scaling should work the opposite way it does: The more hits you do the more damage each hit does. Altough, in real life it would only do more damage if I hit the same spot, so for a fighting game you could do it so you get extra damage for hitting the same height in a combo, so multiple overheads in a combo do more damage than comboing from an overhead into a lot.

Ryu is the champion that is always balanced on a razor's edge between winning or losing by his wits alone.

Lee Sin pushes the human mind to it's limits. You have to calculate your cooldowns as well as figure out trajectories of all of your abilities. You have to forsee several moves ahead. He's the only champion comparable to a chess game.

Adding mana management on top of that is punishing skill and is an unnecessary addition to the huge burden Lee Sin players already have to deal with.
