In the 2D games the "snap" sound dosen't happen unless it hits.

Pure luck. Nah but the Survivalist has been using Medica and in a pinch, Troubadour uses White Noble for a very solid AoE heal. Everything is directed on the Beast and with a shield, Shield mastery, Parry and Beast roar on he can tank shitloads

I haven't ran a dedicated healer on any of my EOU2 runs, I just wish I didn't burn out around the 5th stratum every time to see if I could make it work at end game. How bad of a place to start with EO would Persona Q be? I'm a huge fan of both SMT and Persona and I recently got my 3DS hacked (plus my r4 working with it, so I can pirate DS games as well again) and I'm pretty hyped to play Q.
After I do beat it, where should I go when I want some more EO? Should I just start with the first game on the NDS and play them all in a chronological order? Is the untold series a replacement for the older games? Should I just play them instead of the original NDS games?

Q is a decent way to learn some base mechanics! such as how binds and rows and ailments work, but Q is by far the easiest of the Atlus DRPGs because the binds actually do a lot more than they do in EO, and instead of actual build investment you can just slap whatever you want on anyone.
It's a good starting point, just remember everything is not the same.
Example

Labyrinth of Touhou? There are two games in the series and they're both great (and fully translated), although their combat and parties are completely different from EO. The main thing is that in there your parties consist of 12 characters, with only four of them being active while 8 of them are benched, but you can swap them out at any time during a battle. It's also ATB-based instead of the usual turn-based combat.

I remember there being a torrent for everything you need for the first game (including the expansion/rebalancing disc and better portraits) but I can't remember where I found it, and as I'm too useless I can't remember where I got the second game either. The translation patch can be easily found on Google though so there's probably a prepatched version just as easily available.
