Noob here. I went NC and I've spent all my welfare certs. I decided to main engineer, so I bought several levels of the repair tool, the GCS and the two grenade launchers, and some C4.

GCS isn't good, grenade launchers are pretty useless, you should have stuck with the Merc.

C4 isn't very good on engy, generally you want tank mines instead, should have gotten it for LA.

I was just at a battle where it unfolded just like that. The infantry part lasted for a good 20 minutes and they blew up a fuck load of modules. The only reason they weren't able to finish off the gen is a big armored zerg showed up and ended the battle.

It was funny fighting inside the half destroyed base though.

I was hoping the underbarrel attachments would give the class more versatility. Turned out that the regular launcher is a peashooter. I have had some fun with the smoke though. I dropped some extra certs on a thermal sight, which means that if I pop smoke into a room full of enemies, I'm likely the only one who can see anything for about ten seconds. I've been getting a load of kills that way, but not enough to justify how cripplingly overspecialized the combination is.

The lancer has no drop and high velocity so it's easy mode.

Experience so far with construction is that everyone gangs up on NC and there's no actual base fights anymore, it's 90% vehicle slogs against bases impervious to any real damage.

I don't mind base walls being difficult to kill, but everything else takes way too long. I watched a lone engineer with a lone automated AI turret wipe out two squads of infantry by himself, literally all he had to do was keep the turret rep'd up and it was enough to outdo the DPS from the squads while they were getting slaughtered by the turret.

Progress across the map has slowed down a ton, and now you're basically forced to slowly expand by building wall after wall up to the enemy base, as it's the only way to get enough firepower close enough to do anything.

There's some areas of the map, like near quarts ridge, where you can put those air shields and completely stop/kill any infantry attempting to attack down the hill because they have to pass through the shield to do it and it kills them.

Pretty much all it takes to keep a base going is a squad of engineers, and they'll be able to hold off 4x their numbers. Too easy to defend, too hard to attack.

Ehh.

It'll ruin the lives of whatever poor sod you happen to catch with their tank already on fire or with their ass exposed, and also ruin the day of any MAXes stuck out in the open. Two fully charged shots will kill a MAX no contest, and you can let loose a charged shot as soon as the third part of the triangle lights up, not once it charges all the way and auto-fires.

Extremely fast, 800m/s for level 3 shots. You should generally always charge at least one shot to that point- the damage isn't linear, so a lv3 shot does more damage than 3 level 1 shots.

The projectile is fast but it isn't hitscan, so at extreme range you will still have to lead a bit for ground vehicles and hitting aircraft smaller than a Galaxy is pretty much a crapshoot (at really long ranges vehicles can tend to blend into the terrain and buildings due to the FXAA blur making it harder to figure out where the actual target is).

The best PS2 ever looks is when the wrong skybox, lighting and fog loads when you go to a continent.

Hossin without the fog and with Indar's cheery blue sky is gorgeous, as is Amerish's rolling plains with Esamir's rolling clouds and snow (which make the continent look like a quiet, foggy morning).

I've only got about ten hours on the game, and I'm having some problems.

I'm frequently in situations where I'll have the drop on an enemy, and I'll immediately get five or more clean shots into center of mass and the head. And what happens, time and again, is the person I'm shooting calmly turns around and either one or two-shots me. Death screen typically shows that they usually haven't even lost all their shields.

This is happening to me regardless of my class or the class of the enemy. I signed on as NC, aren't their weapons supposed to be the hardest hitting?

I've been playing since launch, through OMFG, ZOE, Strikers, Liberatorpocalypse 2012, you fucking name it. This is by far the smoothest patch and implementation of new mechanics I've seen yet. It's actually quite impressive.

The update also shakes up a stale meta that, in a huge MMOFPS, had reduced the game to roving bands of lone wolves fighting each other deluding themselves that they were competitive FPS players and that they were getting better at an easy FPS in an uncompetitive format. If you really wanted to be a good FPS player, you wouldn't be sperging in PS2. It's as simple as that.

No, the recoil is extremely controllable, and it's got a very fast reload after a 100 bullet dump. It was already a perfectly usable gun, then shitties cried and now it's actually pretty good.

If your faction has 10% more people than the lowest pop faction on a continent, you can't spawn there until people leave. It uses relative percentage, so if one faction has 30% and yours has 34%, you get a queue. Of course, you have only enough parts to make some small pleb corner base, one turret part, three wall parts, two bunkers, a silo. The bunkers are pretty useful to jam roads though

There is absolutely no reason to pull a Galaxy. If you fly it into a major base, you'll either get chewed by rockets, AA and maxes. If you fly it into a minor base you will be very quickly harassed by ESFs and Libs

The only serious reason to use them is if you are part of a serious squad who is going to fill all slots constantly, in which case pulling a Galaxy with the certs to drop everyone once it gets pummeled is somewhat viable

Depends on server.

Miller TR are all Russian, Connery TR are all Chinese. They left their respective servers once they own got shut down. Both lead to TR having overpop.

I'm pretty sure it's like that with Miller - my experience is with Connery.

It isn't fun to fight with, or against.

It's an odd feeling when you're running the only english language open squad, in a sea of 5+ Asian ones. The Asians really do have no soul though. They seldom hate tell when you v6, you can't call them a shitter or tell them how to not be a shitter (ie, "stop firing at that lightning with the kobalt you're giving us away"), they tank zerg, they horrendously overpop bases, they pull A2AM ESF blobs (though English speaking VS does this too, and with near daily regularity), they warp around the place, kill through walls, etc.

A very small few are nice enough and try communicate, or at the least are smart enough to communicate through macros (v0 - don't fire, v9-confirm, v3 - give us reps, etc - things critical to a harasser crew) - but an overwhelming majority are memerald tier shitters.

tl:dr - TR have overpop on Connery, but they're mostly shitters.

I'd say it's at least 40, maybe even 50% Asian during prime time, and 90% during non-peak.

Non-peak Connery is much more active than non-peak other servers I think - it still maintains at least 100-150 per faction, so while you can still play quite normally, it's like stepping into Beijing.

Take a look at the two webms I just posted

They outdamage base AV turrets and they're really easy to repair. There's no reason to use AV turrets at all right now. Xiphos does what they do, and do it better - you can shoot infantry, aircraft, and tanks with them, and deal more damage than the respective specialized turrets.

So I just built a MASSIVE fort with the outfit, 5 air shields, fuckton of turrets and walls, repair modules out the ass, sundy garages, everything. Deep, DEEP in enemy territory, like 6 hexes from the closest friendly base.

I started out ferrying resources back and forth with the ANT, then helped building some walls and turrets, then jumped into a lib to fend off faggots trying to kill our shit. Logged out after like 2 hours with a score of barely 30k.

At no point in the process was this any fun, it lost us an alert and wasn't profitable at all. This is my objective observation.

If you can't find joy in building your own sandcastles, you could always go kick over other peoples ones. I too, really don't find much joy in building them.

It can be pretty fun to kick them over though, especially considering how a large number of people leave them relatively undefended early on. You can bully the shit out of them if you've got a decent lib, or a couple of harassers. I was running in a two harasser squad (4 man) before. Once the sunderer is down and ANT's are removed, it takes hardly any time to dismantle the place with AV mana turrets, & steal those cores. The whole time you're doing this too, they're frantically usually trying to pull another sunderer and ANTs and bring it back to recover the base.

It's kind of fun leaving AT mines around enemy silo's too. They always seem to net at least one ANT kill.

The construction update brought me back to see what it was like, to consider coming back to playing this shitty game.
Immediately I saw it for the horrible idea it truly was when all is said and done; it only serves to further strengthen zergs footholds on critical bases who build bases in admittedly smart locations.

I mean, sure, it promotes tactical thinking and I'm all for using the noggin, but seriously, seeing these bases just become utter fucking unstoppable strongholds for an overpopped faction...

Construction is the death of Planetside 2 if it sticks around as a meta.
Wave goodbye to the give/take territory control waves of the past. Construction makes it seem like whoever gets a big base down in a good location first can completely cut off a direction in the lattice - and give such a good place for a forward push that there's just no point in trying.

The problem right now is that they're too hard to destroy.

A single squad should be able to take out the many shitty little bases placed around the map that are defended by, usually, only 1-3 people.

But you can't. You can't even do that. A squad gets wrecked by the automated turrets if they drop in, and if they use vehicles to shell the base, it takes so long to do it that halfway through you start getting engaged by other enemy forces.

The only way to wipe out these bases is with dedicated and prolonged zergs slowly building their own bases up to the enemy base.

but if you make base assets too easy to destroy, theres no point in building them in the first place.

What's also a big problem is attackers spawning, which I think is what leads to the prolonged long distance AV shootouts that are unfun and accomplish nothing

Even regular lattice bases are generally annoying for attackers, Xander realized this when he remade Indar, and put appropriate sundy garages for attackers. Since constructed bases have no decent location for attacking sundys to go, it makes you either have to run on foot getting decimated by AI turrets, or try to airdrop in, which is mostly negated by air shields.

Quick tip: Gauss Saw works best fired in short bursts of 4-8 rounds with a ~300ms pause between bursts.

Keeping this in mind, and its already low DPS thanks to its rate of fire, it's not actually that great, especially for a new player, and especially in comparison to the LMG's on the other factions.

More experienced players know that they can utilize the high short-burst accuracy for medium range fire support with a squad, but that's pretty much the only role it's any good at.

My recommendation would be to ditch the Gauss Saw ASAP and get an Anchor or GD-22S. 95% of the fighting takes place inside 50m and these two guns will keep you competitive with the VS and TR.

For shields, pick either Adrenaline or Resist.

Adrenaline:
Must be combined with Nanoweave armor, or it's all-around a worse choice than Resist.
Gives you the highest overall hitpoints with nanoweave armor
Has less up-time than resist, although playing smart mitigates this downside entirely
Nanoweave doesn't cover the head, so you're more vulnerable to headshot damage
1% health and a full charge for your shields still gives you a lot of health to work with; unlike resist


Resist:
Grants resistance bonus to all parts of the body, including the head. So you're not as vulnerable to headshots as with adrenoweave
Shield is tied to your underlying shield/armor hitpoints, NOT its charge: 1% health and a fully charged shield means you're fucked; you have like 2% health at best
Still gives a respectable amount of hitpoints compared to adrenaline.
For best results, abuse the shit out of medkits and equip advanced shield capacitor to improve shield recharge. This lets you get back to 100% shield/armor inside of like 2-3 seconds, completely mitigating the biggest downside of resist armor (this is the current heavy salt meta option), also chugging medkits can effectively make you invincible while you're doing it. Great for running away to safety when you over extend.
