When I played SWG (was it really 13 years ago?) I played a female Doc / TKM. I was given armor sets, deeds to houses, vehicles, weapons, everything you could imagine.

When I went to WoW (around 2005) I played a female human mage. I had so many offers to dance. I was given enough money to get an epic mount. I was given sexy cloth clothing. I was given lots and lots of credits.

My brother and his wife and I were in Iron Forge. He played male Night elf. His wife was female night elf. I also played a female night elf. The pair of us danced on separate mailboxes outside the bank in IF while my brother's toon cheered us on.

Im using one of the orange/custom ones. Ancient Vindicator i think its called. As far as I know, any class can wear any armor via Outfit Designer, but if it has a level requirement, you need to be that level, and if it has a class requirement (trooper for example) need to be that class specifically.

I was reading this thread and figured this would be a fun game to join.

Downloaded it. Then tried to enter my credit card information and it kept giving me an error.

Apparently SWTOR doesn't want my money. I looked up that error message and it has been around for a long time. I guess they want you to call and talk to some flunkee on the phone to fix this.

I guess I am going to stay with WoW because at least they don't make it hard to subscribe.

There was never a reason in the first place.

In any game with an "endgame focus" where your first hundred levels are the tutorial, levels serve no purpose.

I don't understand the class mechanical design in this game.

Almost everything is aoe based but most groups are spread too far apart to use it properly. There is also a distinct lack of pull and leap options. Also I'm not a fan of the ability pruning going on in wow but there are some massively useless abilities hanging around on most classes.

Level has always been used as a measure of how far your character has come. Gear requirements and scaling enemies have always made levels obsolete but scaling levels makes them completely reduntant.

At this point in swtor the only difference between a level 1 and a level 65 is gear and talents. So why is the bulk of the game still designed around leveling up when talents can be awarded through the story instead of being awarded experience that does nothing but unlock talents. Even wow is jumping on the scaling train with legion. Every new zone will scale with your level so you can start anywhere rather than follow one of two routes that converge.


SWToR missed a golden opportunity to enrich the story and the PC's role in it by making the discipline passives and active skills and their optional utilities rewards from tasks that directly involved their usage.

But they don't, not really. All it does in swtor is lock skills and that is it. All other progression is circumvented by scaling.

So now you do a quest to get experience which you accumulate to gain levels which dictate which rank of skill you get.

The problem with this is your level scales so your combat effectiveness does as well which makes a skill rank useless. This is a relic from an older design and It's only purpose is filler to make leveling seem relevant. If you Scale abilities and introduce new skills at specific points in the character quests you eliminate the one reason to have experience and levels.

Also keep in mind, staggering the rate at which you gain new abilities was a way to introduce the concept of a class in older mmo's. Newer and modern mmo's still use this system even though the class archetypes are well known by everyone who has played any and are easy to learn by those who haven't. MMO classes are not nearly as complicated as they used to be. Finally classes are designed to be played at their max level and abilities are stripped as you work backwards towards level 1. You are not playing a complete class early on with benefits later. You are playing a husk of a class. Many MMO's suffer from this especially wow but they circumvented it by making leveling trivial and a cash shop purchase.

By the end of the tutorial you should have all of your abilities and the satisfaction from progression should come from learning how to apply them to a variety of increasingly difficult situations, not from arbitrary numbers and phantom skill ups.

This game shipped with an endgame focus in the same way that wow shipped with an endgame focus, in that implemented a number of large-scale raids after release. In fact I suspect swtor had an even more aggressive release schedule on that regard than wow did. Likewise swtor had pvp seasons initially while wow did not.

Additionally focusing in on the number I picked rather than the overall point being made seems like being wilfully stupid.

In any game where most content is meant to be experienced at max level, levels don't matter. The only reason level cap goes up with each expansion is because levels are the delivery system for new skills, and they could easily find other ways to deliver those skills.

Inquisitor was ultimately satisfying but I was bored to death with Thanaton and "muh kaggath".

Imperial agent was the reverse in that it started off slow but got great.

My favorite is still Warrior lightside. Republic and Jedi getting mad at you and you just stand there being stoic until they all rage out and go darkside. The final fight was underwhelming though. With the IA and inquisitor it felt like you outmaneuvered people rather than just beat them to death.
