Not really, the HotU combat is not as bad as the OC they it still sucks pretty badly because of the fact that you've got no real party and only henchmen. They couldn't make any really interesting encounters since they had to take into account that the player had a single character and a complimentary character or two to play with. There are no cool fights like in IWD with sniping archers, stone skinned drow spellswords, mages like Malavon coupled with interesting creature combinations, undead necromancers and zombies that ambush you and all that jazz. NWN and its expansions are made to be winnable with a fighter who whacks things without any thought.

you can make varric dual wield, can isabela use bows? i've literally never used bows (not counting Bianca or the five seconds I include sebastian in the party to get the XP from his quests and then shove him back into the closet)

actually now that I think about it this is doubly fucking hype because of how weirdly limited the whole cross-class-combos system is by default. like mages can exploit most of them, but the other characters are terrible at it, and most of the options of stuck under hawke-only specializations. it's really stupid actually

actually now that I think about it, the answer is the same either way; if you do it right, you don't have to run away, you redirect the threat to your tank companion (the DA2 tutorial part is meaningless because you can't make carver a tank at that point).

the best part of the mage class in DA:O and DA2 is that you control the entire battlefield in one way or another. in DA2 has the 'cross-class-combo' system, but in DA:O a mage can create spell combos all by themselves. you can freeze an enemy and then literally insta-gib it by shattering it. you can annihilate enemy mages with mana clash. you can splash grease on the floor and then throw a fireball at it to create a raging inferno.

in DA2 you can't spell combo with yourself, but there's no friendly fire (except on nightmare), so you can blow enemies all to hell. walking bomb is a personal favorite, you put a debuff on an enemy so that when it dies it explodes into INSANE damage to any other enemy nearby. and there are are 'cross class combos' where a warrior can inflict 'stagger' or a rogue can inflict 'disorient' which multiplies some of your spells damage by as much as 600%. there are also spell trees that let you literally toss enemies around the field. one of my favorite combos as a mage in DA2 is casting walking bomb on an enemy, then using 'pull of the abyss' to drag every enemy in the area into a circle around him. then he explodes and destroys the entire room.

I should emphasize; I haven't played DA:I, but mage is the best class in DA2 and it's literally possible to play all of DA:O as an arcane warrior mage with no companions (once you acquire the specialization)
