I'm trying to implement screen shaking in GM:S without using views. my idea is:
>have camera object's depth be smaller than HUD's so it wont shake
>create surface size of the screen
>use sprite_create_from_surface() to get "screenshot" of everything under HUD
>draw black rectangle size of the screen
>draw the sprite over it with randomized offsets

This should work, right? I tried to implement it, but it doesn't seem to work properly. It works when I get sprite from application surface, but that draws HUD too...

your game looks great but i think your challenge will be explaining it to your average player who spends 10 seconds on a trailer before deciding if they're interested

Pic related are screenshots from the trailer.

>On the audio part, it will be a discussion between a scientist and another guy, the same way a game like Metal Gear had people talking about technical stuff in order to explain how things work to the player.
>You will be glad to learn that I'm currently working with voice actors, so there should be no strong french accent at all in this trailer. :)

>If the game is accepted on Greenlight, I still have to see if I will make an Early Access as soon as possible, or wait a few months to release a complete game.
>In the case I'm not making an Early Access, should I keep a free public demo?

I still have to decide if I will make an Early Access. After all the game has been in free Alpha for 15 months.

I'm starting the trailer with one million nanomachines making a giant superstructure.
I should write "ONE MILLION NANOMACHINES" on the screen to get people attention.

Here is the WIP trailer (you can activate subtitles), I'm currently casting people to make real good english voices:

id knock the basic architecture/lighting in google sketchup, then go into photoshop using pattern brushes

its clearly 90% modular, what kind of autist would do this by hand? now remembering when phil fish said he did every voxel by hand, for all 4 sides of each level, instead of building a randomized/modular detail system. 5 years of dev time i guess...

i really hate these "explain like im 5" videos.
nightmare mode: theres literally a voice explaining the game like a tutorial

its a trailer, not an infomercial. your goal is to get people hype. thats why AAA games are all set pieces and visuals now.

save the explanations for the description/features section where the people who are interested will continue reading. i know its hard as a dev because you want to explain how cool/deep your mechanics are, but it doesn't make a good trailer.

imo the purpose of a trailer is to keep things vague but get people interested. i also fucking hate when they show the whole movies plot in the trailer

They obviously did their best to make this, and it looks kind of neat, but it will never sell a lot of copies despite its low cost because kids aged 2-5 generally don't have Steam accounts.

So in the end they poured their hearts and souls into this cute little game, but they won't make enough money to make ends meet, and they won't be able to entertain more children with their creations because of their financial failure!

This frightens me. I don't want to end up like that!

The hype trailers work very well with genres people know. Especially Action, Shooters, etc.

A game like Factorio has a very complex gameplay and a very good trailer. But every part of the trailer is logically linked to another thing (mainly because it's a transport belt game), so they can this wonderful one shot sequence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR01YdFtWFI

My trailer is more a Greenlight trailer than a simple trailer.
It's a trailer made to explain things, and talk about stuff which is not currently available in the game.
I think about it more like something between a trailer and a Kickstarter video, specifically made for people who will spent hours programming for fun in a game like this.

I am making one of those games when the story is told in a strange way. You got bit of informations and you have to put them together.
It's like the actual opening video, told only with memes. Yes, it's cringe, but it's related to those people who force memes into their translations, the same way the narrator is forcing memes to make it look like he is "your buddy".

greenlight trailer is same as any other. people come in to see a product out of 1000's, they have no investment and tiny attention spans. you have to grab them within first 10 seconds. the moment you go into explanations i think you lose them

sorry to being up this disaster of a game but: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHgDoVgaSuo

here they show the uses of vehicles and the building, but its not boring. imo, thats what you should do. just show the nanomachines doing cool shit, with intercut SHORT bits of building just so people know "oh u build them".

they dont need a tutorial on how to play the game, at least not for the main trailer.

again this is just my opinion

I actually made an audition and got 30 submissions. I will pay $75 for 45 lines of dialog ($25 + $50). I paid more than most jobs, but there are only a few lines (the pay should be worth the job) and I wanted some quality. I got a few professional who answer and I am currently happy with how things are doing.

There were some lulls in the explanation but it still had cool moments. I like the fact you put the gimmick right at the start with how the nano's work. Though you couldve simplified kind of.

This kind of genre sort of relies on actually seeing the puzzles and stuff be solved (Or just worked on). Which you did at parts. Examples: Space Chem, Infinifactory, etc trailers. The weird VA will atleast have people sharing/remembering the trailer for "So bad its good."

There is a total of 40 000 to 50 000 players for this kind of game. And that's when the guys who make it are very famous (like the World of Goo guys with Human Resource Machine). A game like Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts sold 770 000 units. Besiege, who is also about building and using physics, sold more than 1 500 000 units.
The "explosions everywhere with physics" games are very casuals, even when they can do really complex stuff (like Besiege).

I have to either focus on the very niche of people used to play programming games (and used to put tens of hours in them and wanting details), or take the risk to target a more casual public.
I will surely make shorter, more "action" trailers, but later. When there will be people who already know the informations I'm giving in the current trailer.

Pixel art is very much an aesthetic choice today and requires actual talented artists who draw from scratch right?

In the past did people just convert images like scenery to pixelized versions like pic related?

In the vast majority of games design is as important as the tech which means that making a decent game would probably require someone on the tech side and someone on the design side. Right?

If someone were to make games with the sole intent to improve their programming ability it's probably best just to use common art/design assets. Right?

I think you're right in sticking to a solid "niche" concept. Besides, just because someone doesn't consider themself a type who would play such a game, who's to say they wouldn't try it and find that they really enjoy it? Especially since it looks pretty pleasant to play.

I've followed your postings here from the beginning! It's great, I'm really happy for you.

Knowing how I work, making complex stuff at first then simplifying it, it will surely go that way.

Cubeman! Good to see you are still working on your insane psychedelic weirdo game.

Here's a tip for your Greenlight trailer.

First 10-30 seconds should just be visual eyecandy, activating, stimulating and intriguing. The explaining can come after that.

Don't worry about them not understanding things.

You first need to grab their attention. Then you explain the product.

Hi /agdg/, I have a question about an error I sometimes get in Gamemaker.

if instance_position(mouse_x,mouse_y,obj_thing)
{
var d; d=instance_position(mouse_x,mouse_y,obj_thing)
if d.image_index=0 {d.image_index=1}
}

The error message says that it doesn't recognize the variable image_index. Which means that d isn't equal to an instance. Which means that in the "d=" code it didn't find an instance of obj_thing at that location. BUT the thing is... why wouldn't it? It only reads that code when the if statement determines that there is an obj_thing at that position. Also, the error occurs rarely.

Is it possible that, because the position it looks at is based on the location of the mouse, there is some disconnect between the computer's cursor position and the game's code? Like could the error be caused when the cursor is moved at the exact moment between the if statement determining that there is an instance under the cursor but before it sets d equal to that instance?

I posted this question before, I forget if it was here or on /v/, but someone gave me a workaround. Still, I don't get what causes this problem.

Laying the groundwork for a sorta-RTS game "inspired" by Evangelion. You'd play the role of Gendo/Misato, directing the robots, getting the kid to get in the robot, directing the conventional weapons, damage control and so on, through some sort of faux-retro computer interface. Probably gonna heavily simplify the actual fighting, so you move your units into hexes/squares overlaying a large map, and issue more general orders, as opposed to the regular RTS formula. The regular RTS micromanaging never really made me feel like an actual commander too much, and there will be a lot more stuff occupying your attention anyway.

You hire people for the work they will do, not the work they had done. They know a lot about limited instruments and how to put several subtracks together. They actually are the only guys who are both composers and stop motion creators with thousands of little pieces (like nanomachines, but with lego).

Actual music is this one, it's not chiptune:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru2I4ww5UJA

Pic related is part of the brief I sent them. I'm very satisfied by the work they done, due to the fact the music is very complicated (a 8 minutes track with 7 different parts).

Yes I was also thinking about an island resort game, but I am not too sure if a big detailed island, that can be viewed from all angles and distances, is realisable in Unity the way I would want to, both in scope and technical limitations (Maybe if I can make my own terrain and water shaders that are optimized for good detail depending on distance and performance, but I dont know much about shader scripting)

I'm not even sourcefam or that other source shitposter, but I don't understand why Source isn't a valid engine in /agdg/? Some of this stuff is still ahead of its time, like procedural movement for enemies both bipedal and higher? The AI is still incredibly sophisticated compared to most of what we see in AAA games. The physics may have stagnated since then sure, how many other AAA games actually use physics as a gameplay mechanic as complicated as Source games? How is it worse than Unreal or Unity?

Some of this stuff is still relevent in the current gen. Still looks impressive as hell after all these years:

It's one dude who shitposts with the same images under the same filenames over and over again. Just ignore it. Every general has minimum one shitposter who does nothing but try and run the thread into the ground because "LOL XD FUCK THE SYSTEM XXXXD", and ours for some reason or another has a hateboner for Source, probably because he got kicked out of a Garry's Mod ERP server for being twelve.
Honestly, you can tell when he's replying or not. You just eventually instincively pick up shitposter patterns and learn to ignore them.

Being talented or not, is like having shorter or longer legs, walking the same distance. One goes faster, one goes slower, one less tiresome the other more tiresome. Those 3 legged tanks react to things that are in their way, they don't have canned animations. Say if there's a small house in front of them, they don't jsut walk around it or through it. They step on it, but not like an animation, but they move forward and their leg repositions itself higher. You can see this when they walk uphill or downhill too. Their legs lift up when strafing or walking up hill, and they stretch their legs down when walking or strafing downhill. It's not an animation they made speifically for moving uphill or downhill but because their limbs are reacting to the terrain height. They mix 'canned' animations with this procedural movement, so it looks convincing because they also shift their weight around like they weigh a few tons.
>>

WaveRace 64 and Ocarina of time had this. Wave Race would have the entire body + the jetski react to the waves at different angles and in different directions. You can see the limbs stiffen when the body's weight hits them in the knees after coming down from the wave.

Zelda's was simpler with just the knees bending or extending up hill and downhill and even side-to-side of one knee was higher than the other.

Whether you want to call it dynamic locomotion, inverse kinematics, or procedural movement, it's all the same. PS2 did not invent this.

How do you go about making this? Do you just individually edit vertices, or do you do a height paint/texture and then it turns into that? Or are there hidden terrain tools? I made this, but when I imported it into Unreal, it became a jumbled mess that looked nothing like I made it. It was like a crumbled piece of paper.

Are there hidden attributes that are messing up my geometry?

Not him, but a normal game with lewds. I don't get why a lewd game has to always be about lewd mechanics. I'd love a game where you got this squad of cyborg soldiers fps, then after the mission you can go watch the female cyborgs get fucked by their bfs or maybe bang them yourself with your character and show everything. Then you go back to base and do the next mission. You know, like in real life anyone can have a job and be serious about it and then off work they go and act horny.

>if you're just looking to fap, going at it through gaming just seems so weird and backwards. There's so much porn in the world.
That's like telling someone to go look at porn of lewd 3D women when what they really want is 2D anime sluts. It's not what they want. Personally I grow attached to characters that I'm playing or the NPCs. I don't want to go look up off-model fanart porn of that character, I want THAT character. It's not the same. Some people like some complexity and character development, not your easy mailman shows up to slutwife's house and the bang 30 seconds after meeting each other for the first time. There's no connection, no relatability. No immersion. Most porn is terrible.

In blender you can turn on proportional editing and drag a vertex up. I use the "smooth" setting for hills and the "linear" or "sharp" setting for mountains. Also, make sure to delete duplicate vertices and make sure no geometry is clipping. You can use a square grid like you did, but I find a hex grid looks better.

doesn't matter. The industry goes where the money is at, and I got money to throw if someone makes a game like this. Games like Mass Effect, but just go full 18+ sex scenes. That's all I'm asking for. You can still be a respectable game and be lewd. Tell me one person in real life who goes to work and is professional and respectable , but doesn't come home stressed and ready to bang his/her significant other. What's the big deal. DOA is pretty successful and they're barely softcore. Sex appeal and objectification and sexism is ok, but not sex. We can have all these slutty-looking outfits and skin-tight booty suits but god-forbid any of our heroines lose their virginity. Nosiree, can't have that.

It's no surprise, Xinput isn't cross platform.
The benefit you get from implementing it yourself is you get to support both standard joysticks and xinput ones.

There's no wrappers for Xinput because it's honestly not needed, MS gives you code to get it up and running quickly.

Honor agreements with your past self. You say now "I want to work on my college papers", but then later you say "Hey past self, gimme a break, I just don't want to" -- But you KNOW it's wrong. You KNOW that your past self is right, and you should honor your obligation. But they're not around anymore, so you can skip out on it and there's no repercussion.

But you know your past self was right. So you should always uphold the agreements you make with yourself. Lie, cheat and steal from everyone else, but never yourself.

GameMaker:
+Has drag and drop
+Is more popular
-Have to pay
-Have to make an account
-People always make 30 FPS game with it, fucking Christ people

Godot:
+Has more scripting power
+Completely free
+Smaller download size
-Smaller community
-Less tutorials

I'm not even going to mention Godot being open source as a pro, because anyone making a game isn't going to be using C++ to modify the engine anyways.

GM
>Pros: easy to learn, passable 2D engine, tons of documentation and resources
>Cons: unusable 3D, not free, software looks like it was made for a toddler

Godot
>Pros: best engine for 2D, decent 3D
>Cons: shit documentation, few learning resources, completely free

Ultimately, I would go with Godot. Even though docs are shit, it's only going to get better and more popular.

Interesting thanks.

Planning on making a 2D Zelda clone except I'd like to make the combat system way more developed than it is on Zelda. Seems like everyone agreed that GM was sufficient but if Godot can do more perhaps I should reconsider. I'd hate to start my project only to realize GM is limiting me and I should've done everything on Godot instead.

PS : I can't code for shit but I'm willing to learn if it's needed. I'm an artist so in that regard no prob.

Googling "godot zelda tutorial" isn't how you make a game.

The biggest issue I've always had with GM are the collisions. Nothing would collide properly in the default collision system and you'd have to write some shitty workaround or just make your own collision system. They might have fixed that problem since, but other engines never had that problem to begin with.

got some interesting combos appearing already. for example, remixer crystal (randomize an item) gives you the item with full ammo, and food seed have 2 ammo. so if you get carefulGrowth, you can use 1 seed, then drop the seed item and remix it hoping for another seed (common item early on) and repeat process to generate a ton of food and buff max hp early on (if you have alchemy blessing which gives you 30 remixer crystals)

i doubt many if players will figure this out, and i doubt it really matters for the difficulty.. but the more dynamic stuff like this going on, the better

IMO it's not that Unity lacks features but more the fact that since 2D is kind of a hack some things are a little obtuse.

For example if you don't put a Rigidbody2D on everything you have to work with the Transform which is always 2D and requires use of quaternions for rotations (which isn't really that hard but still an annoyance).

Honestly if it doesn't impose a large performance or size penalty it doesn't really matter that much. As a programmer it's kind of gross, but if it works, whatever.

You know what all three of them have in common that Slain didn't? Good Controls.

Slain is a couple of dudes who already had their foot in the door, had endless coverage, had money to back their project, and they still fucked it up. I don't appreciate people who pass off unfinished games, because they look pretty or because they've already made money.

Sure some of our guys don't sell as much or get nearly as much coverage, but these are 1MA's who bust their ass with $0.00 budgets, no patreons, and barely any twitter followers.

So fuck you for that ignorant comment.

>>138710046
The art may be, but the game itself is not. I doubt you've played it.

>>138710086
Coverage, coverage, coverage. A circle-jerk of friends and beautiful pixel art will get even the worst of games notice.
>>
Art creates sales but now that Steam has refunds you need gameplay to back them up or else that money's going right back out the door.

> Still beats Rock Paper Scissors though so I guess half of your point stands.

Please watch this ENDING and tell me that this is better than R:RPS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgKGw3dOc1k

Keep in mind when this game was playtested, they had logs and detailed reports of the controls not working, of the hitboxes being absolute garbage, of glitches and bugs (with how to recreate them) not fixed, etc.

And their response was to have Kotaku and friends run articles stating, "SLAIN DELAYED BECAUSE BETA-TESTERS FOUND IT TOO HARD"

They claimed they had to change the difficulty of the game so that regular players and hardcore gamers alike could enjoy it.

They spun that baby hard, because let me tell you even I fell for it.

No it wasn't too hard, it just barely functioned as a game.

This is two guys who said, "We have a win condition, we have a lose condition, we've got amazing art. Let's call it a day."

So if you want to talk shit about our own do yourself a favor and back it up constructively.

Can you show me both Slain and Restricted: RPS in your steam library? Can you provide clear examples of what is wrong with either without looking up someone elses opinion? If not go fuck yourself no dev.

Definitely looks aesthetically pleasing, I'd have to actually hold a sword to see if that looks right though. For some reason I feel like there's a way of doing an upward cut without pulling the shield back, ancient fighting styles that use shields tend to always try and keep the shield in front for obvious reasons.

I understand completely if you don't give a fuck about that though.

The sword does go to the front of him, look on the left side towards the end of the animation.

I admit I know very little about sword-play. I found this online PDF this guy wrote about using a one handed sword and I tried to follow that. I also had my little brother swing a mop in an over dramatic fashion and it looked close to this. It's actually not supposed to finish there, it's a two part combo so it'll end with a forward jab. He just overswings it in this particular instance. You're right though they always tried to keep their defense up with their shields so if it doesn't look good it's back to the drawing board. Thank you for the feedback I really appreciate it.

>>138712819

Knowing how to program won't make a good game either. What you need to know is game design. How to lure people into your game, how to create artificial yet engaging challenges for them, etc. If you don't feel like acquiring this skill, just have play testers, who tells you if the experience you've created is shit or not and what would make them happy, then simply make that.

So if I commission a whole team to make a game for me, they're technically not making a game because it's bot their own game but mine? You're retarded.
>>
>>138716915
Do you rig the mode as well? If not, do you have requirements for rigs that you animate?
>>
>>138717168
Don't outsource your work to cheap indians you retard, that is how your game dies.

I rigged the hands/guns in both of the animations I've posted as well as this one. Rigging firearms/weapons is easy enough (takes about 5-10 minutes) that I don't charge extra, but if I have to rig hands/arms I do charge for that.

I've had some clients send me rigged models. As long as it has IK or I can easily put IK on it, it is fine.

Yeah you're retarded.

Themes can be added quite easily. The forest theme is the only one I've had time to make thus far, but eventually I'd like to have a varied collection of them.
>>
>>138717383
why so defensive?
the truth makes you angry? sucks.
>>
>>138717348
I hear ya. Rigging hands is the biggest pain in the ass ever. Especially if you're going low poly
>>
>>138717481
Can you post your animations?

>low poly hands
I don't even want to imagine. Haven't needed to do that yet.
>>
>>138713294
naw, that's okay.
i've mentioned it here before and that's all the shilling i'll do.

>>138713307
i know, i know.
but i was "hired" to do art, another did animation, and programmer shit the bed.

>>138713443
i've put some stuff out on my own, but nothing of note. i did a snowman building game for a client, a few games for streamers, and just some joke stuff; nothing i would sell myself.

>>138714438
yeah, i know.
when i was a kid, i used Klik&Play and made games i sold on floppy disks for a $1.
when i got older, i used Game Maker, then transitioned over to Construct 2 for web and mobile friendliness and made 3D assets for hire.
now i'm just trying to get better in Unity so i can make a 3D game by myself.
i know a lot about game progression, arch development and design as a whole, just need to develop my solo skill.
>>
>>138717561
My game is not primitive enough to need animations. All character movement is purely physics based.
>>
>>138717481
It's not the truth though. Viewmodel animations in a realistic FPS are extremely important for game feel. I would definately consider outsourcing that kind of thing. And $70 is pretty reasonable for work of that quality.
>>
>>138717691
Post it.

I don't want it associated with this cesspool.

Very good work. I too myself do 3D rig work. It's funny how Aggydggy thinks this is grunt work. It can be really frustrating to get every rigged this well. Good Job. Always look forward to your posts.
