I have, and guard breaking a greatshield is nigh impossible. Kicks normally only take1/4 to 1/3 of a full stamina bar off a Havel's shield, and they're slow enough that you can easily roll away from them.

Ok pretty happy with this.

Actually what I'll do is take STR to 20. Choose my fashion souls and go with the lowest vit possible for it and then put whatever is left over into STR.

Pretty much. Some light-mediumish armor is worth using if you have the spare weight, but it's not critical. Heavy armor has a horrible defense to weight ratio, so it's never really worth it unless you have tons of spare weight with nothing to use it on.

For reference, with the lightest armor possible, I took 15% less damage then when completely naked. With medium armor, I took ~25% less than naked. With full Havel's, I took ~35% less than naked.

So it's not completely useless, but it's generally not worth the weight, unless you have nothing else you need.

Aside from shields being back in this game which completely changes things. In BB a dodge was just a flat stamina cost per dodge and as long as you had enough to dodge and attack a couple times you were good because it would just refill between actions, but with shields in the mix less total stamina means your guard is weaker and its harder to break an opponents guard.

In Dark Souls the total pool of stamina points actually matters unlike BB.

Guys. Please take this very seriously (as seriously as possible on an anonymous imageboard).

I have (undocumented) mental problems when playing videogames; they aren't only about the usual OCD stuff, it goes much deeper. When I play the game for the first time, I sometimes raise the bar 'for fun': can I do X with a restriction Y? As soon as I did it, this becomes a rule I *must* follow. I am also a perfectionist/completionist freak. When I learned that Lautrec stops giving his tip after Gaping (I learned that long after killing Quelaag), I had to restart from a save backup. Whenever I meet some 'challange', I *must* complete it. All of my challenges, obviously, had the basic set of rules: no magic, no shield, no resins, no damage taken, no cheesing, no glitches etc.
1) The two cats that fall on you when you defeat the first one; I had to kill them both with the rules I mentioned above, in other words, no ring of fog to separate them, no running in the woods where they lose aggro etc; it took me about 3-4 hours to do that.
2) Doing a perfect-perfect Sif no damage kill, meaning not being hit even by the minor paws/jump damage. With my weapon I had to make 27 2h hits - took me about 5-6 hours.
3) Killing two egg-carriers at once before Quelaag perfectly;
4) Killing two Sentinels in Anor Londo at once (that was probably the most brutal challenge - took me about 5 hours)

Please understand that I list all that not for the sake of being praised or whatever, but to show you how serious are my problems. I can't stop. I can't turn my back and go away. Funnily, I have no problems having some overpowered or really good for the occasion weapon, if I had it BEFORE I encountered the 'challenge'; however, as soon as I pulled it once, I don't give myself the right to change the starting setup.

Even after completing several such challenges (Hydra melee no damage in Darkroot - was hard, but the Ash Lake one is a lot harder) I sometimes had to restart a save losing ~20h of progress. A good example: as I said, I am also a completionist faggots, so I HAD to have the optional Patches encounter in Catacombs. First time I didn't know about it and missed it - had to lose my Titanite demon no damage (it's actually rather hard in that narrow corridor, however the Anor Londo one was a lot harder), a summon to Pinwheel (that's a fucking rare occasion, and my completionist checklist also states 'be summoned to each boss at least once'). Second time I got it, but had to restart again! Why? Because I killed Pinwheel without talking to Rhea's group even once, so they left for the Tomb. Is that gamebreaking? Fuck no. Is it enough to break my nerves? Yes. And I *do* understand how retarded that is, it's almost like I can't win against myself. Sans fight in Undertale had this one line about 'the hardest challenge for your likes: the challenge to defeat yourself and give up on trying something'.

So, I need to move on to the question I wanted to ask you. Yesterday I got very depressed when I realised that I had to take Old Witch's Ring for the real perfect walkthrough; exchanging the Maggot for it, even after Solaire's questline, means missing out at least on one dialogue line (the first meating with Quelaag and the first lines before you reach rank 2 for the shortcut). It was hard to force myself to let that pass, however now I have a much more serious problem. I really wanted to finish at least NG before 12th. I actually already have DS3 and can play it (the press version), but I still didn't go past the main menu even once, I want to start with everyone.

Still, the problem is: the pressure of running tight on time makes me fail.

Fail hard. My current roadblocks are Ash Lake Hydra (my attempts became completely shit when I got hit after killing 4 heads - got hit by the remaining 'easy' ones). The second roadblock is O&S. I still use the Drake sword (+3, but it won't matter to upgrade it to +5, and as I said, I can't do that anyway). While two-handed, it takes 4/5 of the large Ornstein's bar, meaning I need to make ~16 hits on him if I want super Smough; Smough first would take ~9-10 hits. The problem is, even with such acceptable damage, this sword has such shitty recovery that I simply can't find the time to hit them, especially if I try going for Smough. Any attempt to hit him in the opening results in almost guaranteed enough time for Ornstein to do something. Still, I know that it would take me several hundreds attempts to get it down. It's obviously harder than even Sif no damage, but possible. But I won't do it before 12th. And that keeps me down, and I grow desperate.

I want your opinion. Not on whether I need to see a doctor or kill myself, but rather on this idea: finish the game without caring for the challenges, ASAP, to make it before 12th; start fresh later, when the DS3 hype calms down and I have time again to go through DS1 (and actually play DS2, since I'll have to skip it - I didn't expect DS1 will take me so long), this time doing a real challenge run, SL1/naked/no damage on bosses and mini-bosses, etc.

Will I have time to do that? That's my first playthrough, so even if I don't go for the 'no hit' challenges, I'll still want to explore everything, get every treasure (already done with Great hollow and 10 lizards), get to every covenant etc... If I make the final push to defeat my psychotic mind right now, will I make it just in time for DS3?

Sorry for this wall of text. I needed to vent that. Imagine being like that while also having no friends, not a single human being to share all of this with.

Anything that's above 40, dial it back. Otherwise, you should be fine. Oh yeah, and since carry weight and stamina are two separate stats now, you might have to take that into account. By what problems you're having. If you keep running out of stamina, first try to be more conscious of what you're doing and don't swing wildly.. If you still keep needing more, than increase the relevant stat. If you find there are enemies that kill you very quickly, in just a few hits, then raise your HP. If you seem to be doing next to no damage to enemies, upgrade your weapon and raise any stats that you need to wield it properly (it tells you on the item itself).

Anri's hollowing seemed to come out of nowhere. Usually in other games before NPCs hollowed it was preceded by something that made it kinda make sense. If you go to the trouble of saving Anri it seems weird that she goes from happy and having achieved her goals and giving you a tank you present to just suddenly randomly hollow.

I haven't been following the DS3 info (due to being busy catching up with previous DS games) and I have a question. If I enjoy a magic-based melee-type of character (in other words, not raising str/dex above requirements, using mostly int scaling for weapons, but not using any offensive magic at all; in DeS I used Crescent Falcion the whole game and loved that playstyle a lot), which weapon/upg path should I aim for?
