https://soundcloud.com/iwilldevouryourkittens/miscreant-menace

I'm hoping it'll work for a tense and climactic battle. Thoughts?

You can do it anon!
You can make a game!

Just curious, but in the summer I would have a ton of free time and would like to help people with their games, I really just want experience so you don't have to pay me or anything, just give credit IF I do any meaningful work for you. I don't want to contribute ideas, or try to change your game. I just want to work as though I was an employee of the guy.

Would anyone be interested in this?

I'm trying to replicate the first few steps of this http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/AAdonaac/20150903/252889/Procedural_Dungeon_Generation_Algorithm.php?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

and unity's damn collision boxes always get stuck if they're too close to one another. They only spread like the tutorial if they are close but not overlapping a lot.

Is there a fix for this?

At the time of summer I would be done with all computer science classes I would need to graduate, finishing a business minor over the summer.

So I'm decent at coding at the video game level, having taken classes like artificial intelligence, and graphics. I can't say I'm much of a composer but I do have a midi keyboard I've been messing. And have been teaching myself how to draw but I don't have a tablet or anything like that yet.
>>
Post ideas you'd like to see tried out in MMOs. Anything that would help mix up the formula that they all seem to follow nowadays.

Personally I'd like to know if a video game economy could survive if there was a more or less fixed amount of gold in the world. The supply would slowly inflate from, I dunno, characters mining it or something, but there'd be no random gold on monster corpses unless the monster had killed something and picked it up.

YEAH AGDG IS SUPER SERIOUS WE ARE ALL ABOUT QUALITY CONTROL AND RULES HERE
>>
>>138112260

Well how would you account for NPCs who have to be paid for stuff, like traveling, repairing, vendor like stuff? Does that money just go away? Also how do you stop a player from hoarding money then just quitting the game with their character intact.

No worries, we all feel the same way. Nothing better than having someone tell you they like something you put time into.

Now that Im done ranting about my personal feelings I will give some feedback on your song.

The melodies were pretty catchy and I like the intrumentation. The song works as a battle theme. I have to say that Im not fond of the key change by the end of the loop. Key changes might work better in pop songs and songs that arent meant to be listened to on a loop and cause you hear the key change so often it kind of cheapens it a bit.

Also when making music that is supposed to be looped the rule of thumb is usually that you want the end of the loop and the start of the loop to be as close in dynamics as possible. If the loop ends with a bang and it starts again with a fizzle its super easy to hear the loop point and the music will get tedious more quickly.

Maybe Im just preaching to the choir but there you go
>>
>>138112803
The awareness of looping is definitely something that separates great game music from good/ok game music. When composing you have to assume infinite repeats and compose that way.

How does the first note sound? How does it sound second time through? Third? ... How does it sound after time has passed and another battle comes up?

I love the fuck out of Pillars of Eternity, and for the most part the music is fantastic, but some of the battle music is almost a little too... intense? Battley? So on its own it's a great piece of music, but on repeat it starts to wear on me.
>>
>>138112597
I dunno, thats why I want to test it out. Maybe have it structured so that there's simulated cashflow between vendors. Like a potion seller would have to buy his materials from the same vendor that the players buy their potion crafting materials from. That'd also have the effect of making some areas poorer then others naturally, instead of by developer interference, and giving the players the ability to do some jewing themselves, both of which people seem to like. As far as players quitting with fat stacks in their inventory, I'd have to talk to my buddy in economics. He'd probably start talking about tensors and shit.

I have an "action input" object that handles timed hits. During the attack animation it creates the "action input" object and sets the input time window, position of the 'visualization' (i.e. the shrinking circle that lets you know when to press the button) and a script to run that handles the result of the action input.

The "action input" object then counts down the input time window (e.g. if a 1 second time window @ 60 FPS would mean it counts down from 60 over 60 steps). If you press the input key during this time, it stores the current countdown as your "last input time" and ignores any input for a while (e.g. until the countdown - lastInputTime > n).

Once the countdown reaches 0 it checks your last input time and compares it to the timed hit thresholds (e.g. "nice" is 6 steps or 1/10 of a sec, "good" is 12 steps or 1/5 of a sec). It then displays the "NICE"/"GOOD"/"BAD" text, plays a sound, etc. and finally runs the script that you originally passed in (and passes an argument to the script for whether it was nice/good/bad/etc). The script handles the action itself (e.g. if it's an attack it deals damage, if it's the 'identify monster' move it identifies, etc).

>>138113264
I think that its important to have "rests" in your songs too where your ears can "recover" cause in a lot of battle themes the music has to be fast and intense to set the mood and after a while that will get pretty annoying to listen to.

The only example I could think of right now at the top of my head is this song

https://youtu.be/ooZyHLLQ5e8

Even though its very intense its still has a few low dynamic moments so that its not just 100% at all times. Plus the breaks makes the intense parts even more effective.

Its all about keeping the ear interested for a long time. If your melodies are catchy too than that is of course a giant plus.
>>
Does anyone know how much it costs to have your game ported by a third party to a different platform?

I guess it depends on the length of the code, the similarity of the languages and the renown of the studio among other things, but with those variables in mind, how much can it be?

Like how much per line for a nobodies studio?

The whole point of setting up a model is so that you can test your system, see the "steady state solution" (at time = inf), see what happens when you add a periodic "force" (maybe production up in summer season, etc).

Even if you have some random players who happen to keep their attention on your game, that's a bad way to test the system because if it's broken, they leave. Sorry but that seems like you're setting yourself up for failure.
>>
>>138113801
your game needs to have cute girls or lewds to get any response here

if you insist here is a little tip, don't actually post progress. post stuff like "how does this weapon look?" or "how is this juice?". the average IQ in here is grade school level so you need to frame your posts as basic questions people can instantly respond to, no one wants to actually think and give constructive criticism
>>
>>138111194
This is really good. The other anon was right about the beginning being weak (I get what you were trying to do with the "start slow" thing but there's something off about it).

Also the main instrument sounds muffled somehow? Might be intentional but maybe try experimenting with different instruments/samples/whatever. It sounds fine in the main part of the song but when it's solo at the beginning it sticks out.
>>
>>138115843
Reddit is also quite literally worthless. Tried posting my stuff on /r/gamedev a few times and the respones I got can be boiled down to

>>
>>138115634
Im more interested in what will happen when I just leave it alone and dont exert my godlike power over the game. Im not too interested in how the NPC world would fare, because an easy sim could tell me that. The whole point was to what the players as a group would do with it.

It sounds like you have a bad case of tittybabyism. I suggest you stop being a tittybaby.

Adjust your progress posting if it's not working for you. Like someone else said, ask direct questions, use it partly as a short devdiary "today I blahblah, check it out", etc.

Also adjust your replies to progress, because apparently you feel that doing so entitles you to feedback of your own. This appears to be a symptom of your tittybabyism, so clearing that up should help here too.

Aha! Okay, let me explain.

The blue numbers indicate that all the panels with that number are a part of the same sequence. So both of these enemies have two different attacks each. I wrote down SFX to indicate that in sequence 2 for each enemy, their attack would include a feint, which is basically the enemy trying to bait you into blocking too early, which leaves you open to their more powerful attack.

To make that more clear, I have removed the blue numbers and instead drew lines connecting related panels together.

I don't know how you guys do it. I love art, but I hate any career that has to do with art.

I find it really hard, for example, to work with the completely banal video game industry. So many games these days are complete dogshit.

Even if you "make it", whether you're an artist or game designer, you'll likely work on AAA trash like Battleborn, League of Legends, Call of Duty, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed instead of tasteful titles like Witcher, Dark Souls, The Division, Battlefleet Gothic, Dishonored etc.

I'd really think about loopability. Good composition of a song is not the same as good composition in game music. I love the little melody in the first one, but I'd quickly get tired of it. Second is nice and atmospheric, but also that's the easiest sort of thing to loop. Third is fun and has a good kind of "structure" for game music (bweep-bweeps of various kinds, with occasional pauses and additional stuff). I dunno about the 4th one, not sure what kind of game it would go with.

You weren't asking for feedback but I gave it anyhow HA. From a song-music standpoint I like your style.

I'm interested in techniques for videogame music that are more complicated than playing an mp3 in the background, I like thinking about that stuff. Like if song is A->B->C->A->B->C->A... in structure, having like a probability that instead of B it'll go to B' which is a variation on B, that sort of thing.

Dark souls was sloppy as fuck, even the first one. It's one of the most ideaguyish games I've ever played. I'm not saying I disliked it, but it certainly wasn't developed with care for anything other than "I THOUGHT UP THIS COOL GUY WITH A GIANT SWORD AND-" etc.

>The Division
Also, don't shit on Battleborn. It's one of the few modern games that earns its pricepoint. Full single-player campaign with optional co-op, loads of content, no microtransactions, plenty of gamemodes, huge cast of unique characters and abilities, competitive multiplayer, geniuninely fun, it's got it all. Where as Overwatch has even less content but it's Blizzard and heavily marketed. Just because Randy Pitchford exists doesn't mean everyone else should get shat on at Gearbox.

And not every game needs to be a work of art, just like how not every movie is an award winning film. It's ok to watch Direct to DVD movies, they aren't stopping people from making artsy films, they have their own audience. AAA games can have great art direction, not sure why you're shitting on LoL, they're art style is constantly improving and they're updating the old amature-looking garbage from when they first started out. All the games you listed as garbage look great and have tight, responsive controls for the most part.

And the answer?

For this particular variation of source.png he's posted it over 20 times.

https://boards.fireden.net/_/search/image/MQpnOFT8-UhB-vO1PzJLGg/

For another, 11 times!

https://boards.fireden.net/_/search/image/l-oDay5PjUvxqlt_1d6faw/

Imagine the mental state of someone who bullies their own work with false flag shitposting over 31 times. If we were to look up all the other variations he's posted, we'd see that he's been at this for over 7 months and has posted the same image over 67 times in order to bully himself and shitpost agdg.

Truly amazing to watch this level of psychosis in a person who actually thought he had the right to bully other gamedevs.

Let's watch as the freakshow continues!
>>
>>138128714
I don't need anything right now, I'm a useless nodev who can't get started on his game, so I just try to give feedback when I'm around.

But if you just want a random idea, how about some weather-channel style light jazz muzak?

If you like the idea of the A->B->C->... but randomly going to B' or B'' or C' instead thing, I'm interested in thinking about how that would work. I guess one thing for sure is that A, A', A'', ... would have to mix nicely with whatever comes before and after, and same with the B's and C's of course.

http://setosa.io/ev/markov-chains/ this is kind of the idea. I'm sure markov chains have been used in music before, but I just have no experience with any of it.

So like, for these purposes, some middle node has say 50% chance of going to M and 50% chance going to M'. And at M, say 1/3 chance N, 1/3 N', and 1/3 N'', stuff like that. So to do that, you'd have to have M and M' which mix well with N, N', and N''.

Maybe this is an interesting way to get variation, or maybe it will sound like shit, who knows.

There were a couple of people the other day who'd asked me about 3D stuff and if I had a tutorial, does anyone still want me to make that? I could get it done tomorrow, I'll probably ask again in the morning. I know there were a couple of people who were bad enough for me to help. Pic related if you want to judge me or something. I'm now considering removing the middlemost loop to merge those middle blue bands. Might squish it down a little upon doing so.

There's honestly nothing that can be done. Like with rotate you just have to hope he eventually gives up on trying to "get back" at agdg. Let's not forget that just like sourcefam, rotate spent 8 months straight shitposting about danny before he decided to just give up on gamedev altogether and be a tranny for attention. Sourcefam may be on a similar path, only time will tell.

Literally mental illness. Sourcefam has bewildered us all for a good long while but most of us have accepted that he's genuinely mentally cracked. He aggressively shitposted and bullied devs here (and still does) until he got bullied back and it made him snap like a wild animal. There's no point trying to understand a wild animal.

Because it's not a 3D game but it uses '3D' space you still have to account for that shit with a Z-Axis.

In the picture these could both be the same height, or they could be different heights depending on X, Y, and Z Axis'

Because you're not putting a Z axis in, are you only coding as if the closer it is to the bottom of the screen the less gravity it has?

That would be wrong, then anyone at the bottom could literally never hit it over.

And anyone from the top hitting it down would never get it over.

Fix your code mate.

>What is the difference between SDL and an engine like Unreal?
SDL wraps everything you need to make an engine/game from the ground-up.
Unreal is an already finished engine that allows you to make a game with it.

If you want to make a 2d game, use SDL*.
IF you want to make a 3D game use Unreal.
*SDl's renderer is shit, so you'll also need to download another library to use its render module alongside, or just use all of it instead of SDL.
>>
>>138144938
Unreal is an already-made engine. All you have to do is make your own art, music, etc., and Unreal will handle putting it all together for you.
SDL is a library for making your own engine. You'll have to make your own art and music, and make a framework for putting them together.
I'm using SDL for my engine and I like it, very simple and easy to use. If you have some programming experience, I'd go for it. Otherwise, use Unreal.

I would not really call this art, but I've been sort of seriously been doing pixel/digital stuff for about 3 years now.

It's slow but it's soooo fucking easy to use. OpenGL is faster, sure, but it's so goddamned complicated. For most simple 2D games, SDL's renderer should be more than fast enough.

Kind of jumping ahead of myself but once I finish this game I'd like to move on to creating a game using C++ although I might try for another small game in Java again.
But if I do go the C++ route what would be agdg's recommendation?
an engine like UE4
some C++ gamedev library? (please recommend something because this is my preferred route)
>>

If that's true, it's just your art holding you back. You just gotta work on that. Sure your coding's a bit wonky in places, but you did that thing with the light. If you can do that you can get everything else running smooth.

Nodevs and plebeians literally can't understand any part of the game dev process that isn't flashy graphics. They think you just draw a sprite and the game falls together around it.
>>
>>138123521

Sorry for the late response

You have a maximum of three party members. Each party member is assigned their own button to block (that you've mapped the controls to). Your block lasts for a quarter second after pressing the button, or until it successfully defends against an enemy attack. You have to press the button again if necessary to block the next attack. If you block too early before the enemy's attack, you'll let your guard down and turn purple, signaling that you can't block again until you are hit. This also happens if you don't block at all, making it so you can be hit twice in a row. In a boss battle where they could toss up to five or six projectiles, not being able to block every other blow from making a mistake could be devastating.

I would also like battle conditions to change based on your position in the overworld, so instead of blocking your character will counter-attack instead to not fall off if they're climbing before the battle began. And, taking a cue from Legend of Dragoon, enemies or bosses can flash orange at any time when your party is attacking. When that happens, you have to press the character's assigned button (same as block button) who's about to attack the flashing enemy to prevent being counter-attacked. When that happens, you take a lot of damage and all damage against that enemy is nullified.

There isn't any point in participating in demo days is there? I looked at the previous demo days and they are dead, after the first 3 days literally nobody downloads or looks at those posted games. And they get like 5 - 200 downloads each with barely any feedback
>>
>>138149182
Feedback happens in the thread. Also several times people have done youtube videos / streaming, which appears to have been super useful for the devs.
>>
>>138149182
The point is to force yourself to make something by a deadline, otherwise we'd never have anything concrete. Its not about attention

There are actually major downsides to getting too much attention on your game here. Don't overthink it.

He is saying that the war is sold as something "necessary to protect the country", and yet it's not important enough to spend "valuable people" on. It hints at there being a continuation of the norms of medieval England, where peons where shit you could kill off for a chance at profit, but gentlefolk (real people) were spared - despite being the only ones who had anything to gain from these wars.

Reposting from /v/

Games a top down game.
It's based off having simple controls and lots of quick levels.
Every 15~ levels you'll face a boss
Levels aren't going to be bound to what you see. They may or may not have different camera views.

End goal is to have like 100~200 levels.

The only thing I really need to do is
>art
>ui
>more mechanics for obstacles
>steam integration
The levels are completely independent of each other, so you may have different controls depending on the level or different mechanics.
I plan for there to be a boss rush mode where you fight continuously against all the bosses you've seen so far
The idea for the game is simple mechanics, simple design, simple everything, but still maintaining an enjoyable experience

I plan to have bosses every so many levels (probably every 15 levels I imagine, maybe 10, maybe it will vary)

The bosses will probably feel similar to 2D Zelda game bosses. Multiple phases and different attacks.
During most normal levels, you'll have 1 health which when lost will reset the level. During most boss fights, you'll have multiple health which will be lost as you get hit (some attacks will do more than others) until you lose and are reset. As I mentioned, each level is completely independent of each other, so mechanics can vary to any degree I want them to between levels.

The game is also going to be open source. I've closed the source for now because I'm using free assets, but later on I'll re-commit the game to my public github repo without the free assets or the sounds. That way, anyone who wants to see how it works can, they just won't have prefabs or sounds when they play.

I also plan to put it on steam once I set up enough gameplay and make sure it's not complete shit. Going price will be $2.00.

After all of this is over, I'm going back to my main project, as I set this project up in like 4 days.

Since my game is about video game characters who 'escape' their games, how should I explain "saving"?

I was playing with an idea involving this little floppy guy. He'd be like the typical fairy/magic-creature that guides the "heroes" on their "quest". Except the heroes wouldn't care at all.

Then he'd show them the power of saving. Creates a save point, kills one of the characters and then they reappear instantly. Another character tries creating a save point directly above a spiked pit, and for the rest of the conversation constantly appears and dies over and over. So the characters agree to do what the floppy says to keep this power.

You spend the rest of the game gathering points to pay the floppy so that you can save (while following your own quest). Eventually the floppy reveals he's really evil and all those points were for some evil scheme. But you still don't care and just keep going with your own quest (to get your stolen stuff back from the hero). At the same time the hero ends up having to fight the now-super-powerful floppy.

...or maybe I should just add a save menu instead.

don't know how you want to explain saving (but you definitely should going with your theme)

Your game looks way better from the last time I saw it. Before it was just plain wood floors everywhere.

I'm not sure where you could get a good answer for your question, but you may be able to ask people how a video game character would be explained what saving is from another a character.

You might be able to bait a /r/WritingPrompts into comnig up with answers for you

Loving your game, keep up the good work. Just wondering, are you going to keep all the timing prompts to a shrinking circle or are you going to diversify the types of action prompts, kind of like Paper Mario?
>>

What you have isn't bad for an idea. But it's always good to get other ideas. /agdg/ isn't really a place to get anything.

As for the dungeon and the materializing blocks, it looks fucking great. That item heal looked great.

I made a comment before about the UI not lookin great, but with the new scenery, it looks much better since it's plainness doesn't standout as much against the other planeness (which you replaced with actual levels.)

Does the game pause when new stuff is being revealed?
I image if it freezes and prevent movement, that that could be annoying. Might wanna play test that with some people

Design backend folder structure the way you normally would
Design resources the way you normally would

Rely heavily on Unity's editor to do things, rather than hardcoding.

And remember, if it works, it isn't broken.

Yes there will be more variety than just shrinking circles and timed button presses.

I had an idea where each character's action input is based on their genre (e.g. platformer dude - a tiny platformer game appears where you have to jump over a gap). But I think that'd get annoying for basic attacks, so I might leave that for special abilities (if I even add it).

Really I'm just trying to come up with a unique gameplay gimmick.

>>138158751
Thanks. It doesn't pause when areas are being revealed, that's all purely visual (so if you're fast enough I guess you could walk in the invisible areas?).

>>138158937
I'm not sure what you mean? The characters were broken out of their games so that they could freely live on the rom hosting server (that's the world that the whole game takes place in). Some characters live peacefully, others don't adapt and are hostile (e.g. the ninjas).

Each of the main characters comes from their own game (in order: platformer, beat 'em up, shoot 'em up, <generic arcade game>, some sort of simulation game).
>>

>The characters were broken out of their games so that they could freely live on the rom hosting server
Hasn't realized the "some games aren't adapting" part

What's the reason for there to be buildings there?
Are there going to be other people who don't adapt besides ninjas?
What types of locations are expected?
>>
>>138159590
you should make them play full-length microgames instead of doing timed hits
Jokes aside, I think you'll be fine with a different timing-based prompt for each character such as
> press A when the line hits the middle
> mash A
> hold A until the bar fills up
> press A when the shrinking circle lines
> press A in time with these multiple shrinking circles

and then many one or two full-length ones for the super move, just like how Paper Mario does it.

I haven't actually spent much time thinking about how the world works, so most of these answers are just off the top of my head:

>What's the reason for there to be buildings there?
>What types of locations are expected?

The idea is that the video game worlds are "leaking" onto the server (as the server is being shutdown the memory is in a volatile state causing these sorts of strange things).

So the locations would be a mish-mash of stereotypical video game environments (castles, deserts, etc) often linked together with the weird cybery "server memory environment" (this is what the animated color patterns represent).

The buildings either came from games or were built by the characters (e.g. in the webm you can see they're using DK style girders as desks, and there's barrels/crates everywhere since those are a video game cliche from tons of games).

>Are there going to be other people who don't adapt besides ninjas?

Yes, that's just the explanation for all the enemies. Like, friendly characters live in towns but there are whole "unexplored" areas full of these rogue hostile characters.

>finally figure out flaw in my collision logic

The intro could be a bit shorter. The repeating melody part repeated a few too many times without enough variation.

From 0:58 onwards it was good. If you could get that sort of variation / samples into the earlier parts it'd be great.
>>
>spend hour mustering motivation to click the IDE icon

>>
>>138165424
I figured that I put the loop point when the main melody kicks in so I figured I could keep the intro a bit longer since it wont be repeated but it might be a bit long yeah.

And you're right about the main melody being used a bit too much. I need to figure out something more to do with it, maybe add another harmony or just change the melody a tiny bit to add more variety.

Thanks for the feedback!

Current:

>>

PC games like this normally employ things like arrow keys for movement, Z for attack, X for jump, C for casting and AD for dashing.

Quit talking out of your ass. Dark Souls 1 PvP and USFIV are similar in a lot of ways. Both games have an active punish (backstab/grab), both have a wakeup game, both have different attacks with differents strengths and weaknesses and both heavily focus on footsies. Both games have toggling and the pacing is about the same. One bad move and its a punish.

I could go on but i've got work to do.

Start small. Like really small. Your first project should be something like 'click the clown'
>>
>>138168753
You want to make top-down shooter? Learn the basic functions. Then go look for top-down shooter "examples" and "engines" from yoyogames sandbox or forums and check the codes and see how they did it and try to learn from them.
>>
>>138168207
If you can't do super high poly organic anatomical correct models adapt to your capabilites.

Make low poly with simple single colored or gradient textures. If you can't do that do full first 3d like ELITE or star fox.
>>
>>138168753
You can also go youtube and try to find top-down shooter tutorials if you like to learn that way.
>>
>>138168939

I don't know what happened, but I can't even work on anything anymore. A few months ago I could progress on my projects, had daily schedules and goals I wanted to reach. But I completely lost all faith in my main project and just dropped everything.

And from that point I didn't touch anything gamedev related. Didn't draw. Didn't program. Didn't model. I want to do it every day, but then I get this strong feeling that I'll fail and never get anything done. I know I shouldn't be aiming to succeed so fast and I need to simply progress and see failure as a learning experience, but I still can't do it.

You don't JUST lose interest in a hobby for no reason. Especially if the anon says something went wrong with his main project. It can shatter someones resolve and leave them questioning their abilities. Even if you loved doing X, if that happens you will have such little confidence in your skills that you will stop doing it. And so : Depression the MEME illness.

If any of the use cases give up at any stage then gamedev / getting fit isn't for them but at least if you go with option a you got something out of it

What exactly did you achieve then?

Ofcourse giving up at #1 on the first day and on #2 on the first day will make #1 seem like the bigger achievement. But if you want small achievement and then burn out completely then go ahead, start running your marathon and ending it on a stretcher.

#2 has a much bigger chance of success, because you slowly build up everything from the ground up. In exercising and in new routines in general you never start out with the action itself. You start off by making it almost a natural thing to do it every day. Just like eating or brushing your teeth. You don't even think, you simply go out and do the action. THEN you ramp it up.

this is where you lose me. Where are you pulling this assumption from that people will continue increasing the time if they start off small? How is getting a huge jump start inferior? They get used to doing a big leap in performance that they might never see by doing your babby steps method. They can then pull from this memory of having stayed up all night on that first night for other nights.

Even if you are the sort of faggot that starts off a big swim by dipping your toes in the water first and wading in waist high before finally getting completely wet, know that others benefit from diving in head first.

Is it the head of a to-be animated dragon?
Is it going to be a painting on a wall?
