I can't weigh in on stuff like Abyss and Maw, but by virtue of being introduced with SOMETHING resembling an interesting tidbit or two.

Or, in other words, I don't think it's fair to pick favorites when some of the characters have two panels to their name, but it's not too presumptuous to assume SOME character out of them given they've made better impressions with less pages.

Basically, it's a double standard based on the fact that demerit can be fairly contrasted with absence while merit can not. If all the Egg Bosses died next issue, I could say Axel is worse than Maw because neither had much substance but Maw had an inkling of a personality while Axel didn't and also wasted my time. On the other hand, I couldn't assert Clove was better than Abyss because --as a non-character-- I know so little that I can't make any judgement.

Meanwhile, we have Thunderbolt who utterly adores Eggman, addresses him as "lord," squeals like a schoolgirl, defers pretty much all praise and success back to him, tries to compensate for her height with a giant mech, doesn't take shit from her underlings, has a short temper, has a ruthless streak and wasn't afraid to try to take on the Werehog on her own.

Then we have Clove who's calculating, calm, reserved, cares deeply about her sister, isn't cruel towards her underlings, is willing to put herself at risk and talk issues out with confidence, was very civil with Sally, and is now trapped under the weight of her own guilt because she still got screwed over and couldn't bring herself to wreck her sister's happiness.

Tundra is a hypocrite on several levels who seems like he can't reconcile what's actually happening in the world with his ideals and it makes him an asshole.

Axel doesn't really have anything inherently intriguing or fun about him in comparison. He's just a blunt, somewhat loyal-ish guy who likes driving.

There's nothing wrong with having a straight man, but a good straight man isn't defined entirely by BEING the straight man. Shadow is blunt and self-serious by nature, so he plays the straight guy in a lot of situations. Despite this, there's still more facets to his character: he's a bit narcissistic at times, he's a bit of a pessimist, he's got a little messiah complex going on every once in a while, he's slow to trust new people, he places both too much importance and blame on himself, etc. KNUCKLES plays straight man every once in a while, even in his first post reboot appearance, and he's got a lot more going for him than "the serious guy".

A good straight man is able to actually able to juggle the role with other characters and contrast with them without exclusively sitting IN that role. Basically

No, I'd say it's more that this is about as much is expressed in every Egg Boss's first few panels, with exceptions like the Battle Lord and Maw and Abyss because they've literally only gotten about two panels apiece. Even Conquering Storm here has about as much nuance over three panels.

The issue here is that everyone ELSE who shows up for more than a few panels keeps getting new bits of nuance while Axel shows up several times (I threw out two other pages that weren't relevant enough, mind you) while Axel's appearances just keep reaffirming "he doesn't really like Eggman" and "he likes cars". Nothing beyond this is expressed.

Thunderbolt's first page doesn't even characterize her as a fangirl, or show off her electric powers, or even identify her as a girl, yet it still shows her as being a terrifying leader who is obsessed with honor. Meanwhile, that collage has two equivalent pages from the upcoming issue, and...Axel just pushes that he really likes bikes and cars a lot, again, and is a blunt badguy, again. There's way less going on with him as a character, and that's not just a matter of spectacle or craziness. Clove and Cassia's very first page does a better job establishing their personalities as well and they're probably the most normal of all the Egg Bosses.
