I haven't read Itachi Shinden, so I really have no basis of comparison to determine how good of an adaptation it is. But so far, this set of like four episodes has done more to humanize the Uchiha than Kishimoto ever did. And its nice, and nostalgic, to see ninjas actually acting like fucking ninjas again, instead of summoning meteors and throwing energy balls around. We've gotten very little in terms of plot and characterization within the recent manga episodes and the Madara fight's just been dragged out to exhaustion.

The manga is canon. The Anime is canon in a weird inverse of events. Some of the stuff that happened in it are referenced but never elaborated on. There are stuff that can be considered "filler canon" like that swordsman Raiga, the backstory of some of the jinchurriki, and Blood Prison(which was referenced in Kakashi's novel). The novels are canon, any way the anime butchers them works in a inverse effect like with the manga. Road to Ninja is in some kind of limbo since it can be reference as something that happened without detail. The games are not canon, although Ninja Escapades from UNSR is pending with the creation of Akatsuki and Kushina with Obito's team. The Akatsuki one can be taken as a loose backstory while the one with Kushina can be seen as detail in events. Shisui's backstory in the game is different from the one in the Anime with his encounter with Danzo.

The key here is how much detail NOT to put into it.

The problem with the databook is the bullshit with the Japs' need to have everything about a character fit into some profile.

Assigning stats to characters who as strong and fast as the plot needs them to be is just pointless, but fine.
Where it goes out of hand for me is shit like making up stuff like Sausage's favourite food being tomatoes. Naruto's favourite food we see all the time, hear.him mention it, see him enjoy it, so fine put it in the page. Even stuff that's not mentioned or shown but kinda meshes with the character I can tolerate like Hinata liking sweet foods. But shit like Anko having a thing for tea ceremonies, Sasuke eating anything other than razor blades and drinking only vinegar, or who knows what else, well for me not only does it make up baseless stuff but torpedoes future, potentially fun characterisation somewhere down the road.

A lot of the writers (some, not all) have a knack for really twisting words into sounding fucking SICK. Personally, I love anything to do with Space Marines - I've got a ton of their Battle Novels books, and other odds and ends.
