Doom (Playstation)

I'm playing the recreation for GZ Doom and switching back to the original to compare.

It's a decent enough replication and runs at full speed. It's not that exact. No dithering for one. Some of the lighting is off. Some rooms are pitch black, where as you could see much more in the Playstation version.

I rarely emulate PS2 stuff, the only other thing I've emulated is Dragon Quest VIII so I'm not up to speed on PCSX2.
Should I use the stable 1.4.0 release build, or find a recent GIT/SVN compile?
Seems like the 1.4.0 build is only a few months old but it could already be lacking important fixes or features.

Even that wouldn't work, main 3D zelda games are all tailored around 30fps (animations, specialFX) so making a hack would still break things unless you remade specific assets.

>>137415923

Pretty gimmicky but a clever idea. It's always clever to mess with 8bit console emulators, you have so much power to spare that you can just do the most ridiculous things.

I hope it'll be true of the PSX/N64 one of these days, so much potential for messing with the games.
>>
>>137416209
>I hope it'll be true of the PSX/N64 one of these days, so much potential for messing with the games.
I mean with a decent computer you could easily do a 3x3 with PS1 games even with mednafen, even a 5x5 with some luck and no improvements over the hardware.
>>
>>137416990

It was more of a general observation. With NES or GameBoy you don't have to worry about performance at all, you can write everything in Ruby or Javascript, add ridiculous hacks everywhere, not optimize anything and it'll probably still run at full speed.

With the PSX you have to be a little more careful than that, if you start messing with the CPU or GTE it's very easy to drop to sub-10fps if you're not careful. In turns it means that the emulators are more optimized and less straightforward to hack into. That makes it more difficult to prototype "crazy ideas" quickly.

Yeah that's because it doesn't filter correctly across the edges of the polygons. It's pretty difficult to fix though, you'd need to figure out which polygons are supposed to tile together and use that in the filter. Seems complicated.

Not that I've seen. Only thing I know that Pete's plugins do pretty well is in differentiating sprites and other 2D elements from textures. That shot, for instance, has the UI elements filtered, which looks bad IMO. Pete's plugins can filter textures without filtering the UI. Pic related.
>>
>>137424709

That's very interesting, that could be part of the explanation why Pete doesn't have those weird seams in the UI at increased IR. If he has good code for figuring out what's 2D he could always map those at 1x to avoid the rounding errors.

Well, the plugins have like 8 texture filtering modes. A few of them produce the exact same errors your shot has, while others do not. They also have something called "hi-res texture" filtering, which appears to upscale the textures for a certain factor, then filtering them afterwards, resulting in something of an in-between nearest and full bilinear.

That's the most annoying thing in pete's plugin config. It's like he tried to make it noob-friendly by using non-technical terms but then nobody really knows what it does exactly.

Even for the internal resoltion IIRC, it's something like "native/increased/increased a lot" or something like that, it doesn't say what's the factor exactly.

You mean that you know how to code but doesn't have experience with emulators in particular?

It's not that hard to get into, you could dive into your emulator of choice and work your way out. Of course depending on the emulator it could be pretty overwhelming.

You could also read a tutorial on how to write a simple emulator like the GameBoy to get a feel for it.

One potentially interesting thing to do I've been meaning to try for a while but haven't found the time to do yet is to take the NES accuracy tests and figure out why nestopia fails some of them. Seems relatively straightforward at a glance but I'm sure there's some trickiness under the carpet.

The bootrom is 64KB. The lower 32KB is always readable, and contains nothing interesting. The upper 32KB is locked by setting a bit in the config register:

Apparently you can clear that by sending a very short pulse to the reset line.

Developers were generally very lazy when it came to making PAL-games. So instead of optimizing the games for 50hz, they just made it run slower (about 17% slower). Things end up looking a lot less smooth this way.

RPGs on SNES can be a little slow as is, so yes, speeding the game up to its intended level is a pretty huge fix, to me at least. For reference, if it takes 15 hours to beat with the PAL version, making it run 20% faster (which is what increasing it to run at 60 fps should do) would allow you to beat it in 12 hours instead, saving you 3 hours of... nothing, really.

Yesterday I was trying to make NSMB work using Dolphn's netplay to play with a friend, but the game kept freezing on startup. Turns out it's a problem with the emulated wiimote, the game ran smoothly when we used emulated GC pads but of course we couldn't navigate the menus or play.
Does somebody here know how to use netplay with emulated wiimotes? We were using the latest build.

I don't understand how someone can be so tech illiterate that they don't know what a .rar file is, or how to extract them, yet somehow manage to join an IRC chat.

Great to see the typical user base of Dolphin in action though. I wish my Wii could rip discs into multiple .rar parts.
>>

Does anyone know about the wii hardware limits. Or at least how dolphin emulates that.
Im specifically talking about ram. The game maps the memory used so if I made a mod for a gc game could I tell it to use the ram after the gcs. Or at least do this on dolphin.

>Does anyone know about the wii hardware limits. Or at least how dolphin emulates that.
I don't think Dolphin emulates the hardware limits, since if your computer is beefy enough, you can run Yabause-Wii and WiiSX at full speed.
>>
>>137604747
well Im talking about ram specifically here.
>>
>>137605569

Emulators always emulate the exact amount of RAM available on the original hardware. No more, no less.

I could be possible to implement more RAM than the original hardware allowed but since games don't expect to have more RAM available there won't be much of a point to it. It might break some games however.

What you can do is increase the cache sizes and things like that, which might work as an internal overclock of sorts. You'll probably still be better off overclocking the CPU instead.

Well, some emulators have the option to increase the amount of emulated RAM, to simulate dev systems.

DeSmuME can have doubled RAM.

And there's a build of Dolphin with more RAM, so you can emulate a prerelease build of Metroid Prime.
>>

>You can download more ram
>>
>>137609159

I assumed the previous poster asked that wondering if they could run the games faster or better by increasing the amount of RAM available in the emulator.

But it makes sense to do it if the game is built specifically for a version of the console with more RAM.

No, I specifically stated it was for a mod in my original post.

>Emulators always emulate the exact amount of RAM available on the original hardware.
Thats the thing. The wii has more ram than the gc. Its not two separate emulators and thats not how the wii runs gc games either. I believe its all part of one large memory and the game just chooses which to use.
>>137609159
What build of dolphin? Sounds interesting.
>>
How do you change the input settings for bluemsx libretro?
>>
>>137609968

Well the additional RAM would have to live somewhere in the address space. On the PSX for instance there only are 2MB of RAM but it's mirrored 4 times over the first 8MB. Some games actually expect that and access it over several mirrors, but if you put more RAM here the mirror won't work and the game will break.

It's possible to put the additional RAM elsewhere, for instance in the parallel extension port (that's actually a hack you could do on the real hardware) but it won't do anything unless the game is modified to use this additional RAM, like some N64 games did with the expansion pak.

I'm half expecting one of you fucks to come up with a CRT buzz simulator, the desperate infantilization is that bad.

Either this is already pasta or you have made plans to copy it over into every new thread from now, I know, but there's no comparison.

Old 2D game visuals were drawn in whatever resolution the system targeted. You can't go download it in "1080p bluray quality", because what is there is all that is.

Even in the case of movies and TV shows, DVDs or worse is all that's available for lots of media, and I can assure you absolutely no one would want to or ever do watch those blown up with nearest neighbor scaling on modern displays. These video games were created in even lower resolutions than SDTV productions, is it really so weird that enthusiasts will be interested in better methods than bilinear filtering to make them scale better on modern displays?

Where can I download Ocarina of Time in 1080p bluray quality?

And just throwing it out there, the other day I saw Friends was on Netflix, so I decided to watch one of my favourite episodes. It's the one where Joey ends up on the $100,000 Pyramid. Everything started out great because I had no idea the show was filmed by such high quality cameras that it could be mastered in 1080p like Seinfeld was.

Then Joey ended up on the Pyramid show, and the format switched to 4:3 and had the shittiest NTSC filter over the picture I've ever seen in my life. I thought it was neat how they did that because there's no way a shitty gameshow from the late 90's/early 00's would be filmed with a 16:9 HD capable camera.

Then the rest of the scene shot in the studio was filmed with that camera and it didn't make sense, because they went to commercial break, and it clearly showed Joey talking to the other people who would appear on the gameshow at various different camera angles during this down time.

And it's not like they filmed on an already existing set with lower quality cameras, because every scene after that in the studio was filmed with the 16:9 HD camera, aside from when Joey and his partners are answering questions.

So fuck you and your bad copypasta.

>>
>>137644436
>People don't download Pulp Fiction in 240p VHS quality and add tracking scan lines and static.

The analogy is false. Film can be scanned in high resolution. There is NO secret high resolution version of Super Mario out there. It's a 240p game. How do you scale that to a 1080p or higher monitor? Typically that means nearest neighbor or bilinear. So jaggy or blurry.

CRTs can display these games at native resolution, at full screen. A CRT monitor is very useful for SD games.

Creating a virtual CRT would be optimal for playing SD games on an LCD screen. But a lot of resolution is needed.

This very premise is wrong. A 240p game displayed on an SD CRT TV is not a defect at all. It's just the display meant for low resolution content and can display it at native resolution.

Can you point to me the LCD that can display a 240p game at native resolution?

I have before my computer crashed. The emulator I used was Demul, and the games were Soul Calibur and Street Fighter III Double Impact. The former lags when I fight Inferno in Arcade Mode, but the latter lags at the start.
>>
>>137702893
If you're really on a laptop you need it to be plugged in and be set to high performance in the power settings. I don't know specifics about Dreamcast emulation in particular to know if Demul is the one to use or not though
>>
>>137702893
Forget about using Demul, it lags for two reasons, one is shader cache generation which you won't be able to avoid regardless of hardware, the other is Demul being monstrously demanding (think higher than dolphin reqs)

Because no one ever talked about it until someone introduced the idea that it was a thing that caused Dolphin stuttering. Now suddenly every emulator is having this same problem no one ever noticed before 2015 or so. Does PCSX2 have it as well? Why does it not stutter for me?

The devs of dolphin are the ones who "introduced that idea", more than a year ago when they introduced that in newer builds.

PSX test suites are in an even worse state than PSX emulators though. Closed source, heavily focused on the GPU and CPU. Also since ePSXe is closed source it's hard to know if they are actually making the emulator more accurate or just adding hacks to pass the tests.

So yeah, I agree that PSX tests are mostly worthless. You're better off checking game compatibility.

For Mario Kart 64 and any other 3D game in Retroarch I recommend aa-shader-4.o shader, because it can filter 2D and 3D simultaneaously, even with High Internal Res.

Show it off in-game anyways. MK64 uses sprites for the racers and has lots of 2D assets, so it might not be all bad.

It looks fine for things far away and in extreme resolutions at small sizes may appear to add detail, but otherwise it looks like shit up close.

I agree with you, I have a Trinitron Wega SDTV and black lines aren't as much visible as in those CRT shaders, mostly because surrounding pixellated lines vary in intensity and make the "scanlines" thinner and brighter but also not so uniformly.

Nothing beats real 240p and that's why emulating on Wii is a godsend.

>Unfortunately, gamepaks were a major departure from the way traditional emulators worked. And indeed, no other emulators were eager to implement this new system. Not the least of which because they all lacked the new features of bsnes, and would thus have no use for them.

>This change also created severe backlash amongst bsnes users; literally decimating the userbase from ~100,000 downloads a release to around ~10,000 per release. It alienated many long-time supporters, turned some into foes of the project, and resulted in roughly a dozen forks of bsnes.

>This was, in a sense, a long time coming. Super Game Boy, BS-X Satellaview and Sufami Turbo emulation had already complicated game loading. Multiple peripherals had complicated input configuration. DSP LLE had greatly slowed down emulation and complicated game loading. The dot-based PPU renderer cut performance in half; which spawned a complicated system involving multiple emulation profiles that confused users. Emulating more and more of the SNES resulted in the necessity to scale back features to keep the user interface sane.

>The addition of Super Game Boy support landed a Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulator in bsnes. The addition of the ST018 led to most of the work being in place, and ultimately led to bsnes gaining a Game Boy Advance emulator. A desire to round out the emulator set eventually led to a Famicom emulator, and most recently, a WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color emulator. These additional emulators further required simplifying and removing SNES-specific settings from the user interface, alienating even more users.

I kept waiting for him to say "so to solve this I have..." but no. byuu cares not that you don't think his emulator is practically useful. byuu cares about autism. Just use RA-BSNES and let byuu live in his weird creepy "let's design our own HTML standard and redo half of C++ from scratch!" land

That makes Blast Corps and Banjo Kazooie work with LLE RSP, and it doesn't cause the regression with Kirby 64's HUD.

It does not seem to get Perfect Dark ingame beyond the initial disclaimer screen with LLE RSP, so that part is still unchanged.

My point is that if someone wants savestates for each game to bypass the boot sequence then someone would have to on each update go through each game and make sure the save state didn't go to shit. We all know that slight version changes can fuck a save state. The idea sounds like it would be a lot of pain in the ass to keep updated.

>At the moment, I can't even conceive of a time when I might be able to properly emulate the SA-1's bus conflict manager that inserts stalls into the slave CPU when the master CPU is accessing the same bus. We simply don't have fast enough CPUs for this. And it's not just me saying this, even _Demo_ from ZSNES once mentioned how it would require a ~10GHz CPU to emulate the SA-1 perfectly.

>And to make matters worse, the balanced and performance cores of bsnes have really hit a dead-end. They've been nothing but an albatross that has made improvements to the primary accuracy core of bsnes more difficult, and complicated the codebase, compilation, distribution, usage, etc.

>I had hoped to eventually retire them as processor speeds picked up, but that hasn't happened. Yet keeping them around hasn't gained us anything, either. By their very design of compromising accuracy for performance, they really can't be improved.

byuu wants 10 GHz CPUs to emulate a pointless SNES feature. He's mad because the laws of physics won't bend to his will. I can only imagine how he suffers--when "looks accurate to me" isn't good enough.

>>137797840
Isn't balanced still far more accurate than SNES9x? Essentially he should just have a legacy version that says "if you just wanna play average SNES games with less hassle but extremely high accuracy, use this" and then go on the autistic crusade with the newest versions that increasingly degenerate into madness and require 4ghz CPUs to run

Superb.

In practice? No. Not outside of a couple of games.

I used ultra iso to get around that.

I think you meant gbeplus.

All I can find is TOSEC, and they don't even have NTSCU Snatcher or Earthworm Jim

Grid pattern and lines are both gross.

We're talking about the SW renderer not the HW one though so unless you're unlucky I don't see how that works because I get the same exact result regardless of hardware.

Probably 4 if you have a good enough CPU for PCSX2's software renderer, otherwise probably 2.

3 is a much better game than 2, and maybe even 4, but if you don't speak nip you're pretty much fucked for playing it.

Just because, here's a list of worthwhile AC games, emulatable or not; some are better than others, but everything else is pretty much shit:
>Air Combat, 2, 3(if nip), 4, 5, 0, X, 6, and Assault Horizon Legacy
Assault Horizon Legacy is basically a remake of 2 though

Also, Sky Crawlers for the Wii is made by Project Aces and is pretty good, but you probably need a real Wii Wiimote and nunchuck to play it.

btw I don't think any of the PS1 games run at 60fps, but I also think you're just being an idiot by having that as a requirement.

Is there a good place to get .apk's without fucking malware everywhere?

Japanese are weird. They have doujin shit everywhere so they don't really believe in copyright law, yet their emudevs love copyright law and demand you do not distro their software without their permission
>>
>>137892872
Carry on then I guess but I don't largely see the point of playing PS2 games in SW unless the game will never work error free in HW

mobilism. You can use google search like so to find the latest version of whatever app:

So, I didn't see anything about it on the wiki, but what emulators are generally recommended for recording footage?
Primarily interested in Nintendo emulators.
>>
>>137897245
thanks for the info lad.
>>
>>137902187
Matters what you want. If you want perfect quality frame dumps, either look at TAS based emulators or retroarch.
If you just want good enough, then get whatever and use OBS to record it.
>>
>>137897482
Well I finally found something okayish on romhustler. They have redump stuff, but it's been combined into a single bin.

I tried to use a hex editor to pull it apart and verify, since based on the filesize, it's just all the files concatenated, but only the first track came up with the right hash, which is kind of sketchy.
