Most single player TCGs follow the format of the GB Pokemon TCG: you have a bunch of opponents you can fight in any order, beating opponents gives you cards, beat all opponents in an area a certain number of times and you get to fight the area's boss. Beat all bosses to face the final boss. Beat final boss to win the game.

Do you like this format? Do you think a proper RPG-like format where you go about the world doing shit but occasionally you have RANDOM ENCOUNTERS (with card players) would be better?

>>137253551
What I'm saying is that I can't use unityscript to do anything because I can only understand the most basic parts of the code. Anything that goes beyond that is too far beyond my understanding. On top of that the newer unity tutorials focus on C#, which I only studied for a little bit.

I know there's the unity tutorials on scripting, but there's so many of them. Still going to do them, but this stuff sure isn't motivating me.

Made a few changes, does this make visual sense?

-Grey scale, tiles you've seen before but are currently out of your vision range
-Darker/Desaturated tiles, tiles that you can see now but are dark (no light source illuminating them)
-Brighter tiles, tiles you can see now and are lit
>>

How do I write scripts that are designed to take in arguments in GM? Say I want to write a function called SetControls(Northinp,Westinp,Southinp,Eastinp) which sets global northkey/westkey/etc variables to WASD is I run the function as SetControls(W,A,S,D). How do I tell the script to take in arguments? Also, do I instantiate the global variables within the function, or do I write down the names global variables somewhere else then just set their value in the function?
>>
>>137254847
Mine just says "reply to this post"
That's funny though
>>
>>137255215
You use argument0 to argument15 for specific amount of arguments and argument[0] to argument[15] for an unspecified amount of arguments.
If you put ///SetControls(Northinp,Westinp,Southinp,Eastinp) as the first line, that will show up in the script editor like the built in functions do.

Create all your globals at game start with globalvar.

You can just create them in the function by writing global.variablename = value I think. If you've already declared it, it just changes it.

>>

>>
>>137254123
unity is shit, unreal is much better, and blue print are fucking easy, seriously, its better to switch before you get used to that shit
>>
>>137254943
It's ok I guess but not very pretty. Indicating light and darkness only with different colored tiles doesn't work too well imo.
>>
>>137254943
It might be easier to tell when in-game, because then I'll see the tiles changing as I move. But in the screenshot it's not completely clear. But I'm not sure how to make it more clear.
>>
>>137256038
>>137256038
A global variable needs to be read by anything at anytime. If you're not setting it at game start, it might not need to be global.
Using global.variable is a better way to initialize the variable if you're not giving it a unique name as globalvar makes it so that variable name will always reference that single global value.
>>
>>137256442
Yeah, but muh performance

Also, I have no real reason to switch.
>>
Thanks for the feedback, anons.
>>137256474
Yeah, I get that. The plus is that coloring each whole tile keeps it being from 'well is this tile lit or not?' I was planning on having stuff like monsters that are stronger in darkness, so immediate clarity is important.

developed an address parser that takes a string and turns it into a unique int value. I'm now working on a system to turn that key value into a generated area,.

There is going to be a combination generated areas and "core" areas such as story locations, and easter egg locations. The thematic approach for the game right now is like if you took Planescape and you turned it in a deepweb syberpunk type setting where different areas of the web are overseen by AI overlords each developed to have individuality. So their kind of like gods/demigods if you maintain the Planescape analogy.

instead of inverting y velocity when the ball hits the top and bottom of the screen, you're inverting the y coordinate.
The middle of the screen is the center and since you're inverting y coordinate, the ball keeps jumping from upper bounds to lower bounds and the process repeats.

Some progress.

Didn't like how the previous animation was heading and it was taking up way too much time. It was beyond the scope that I should have chosen. Been a month or two already and I haven't even finished animating the entire idle yet. Switched to pixel art/retro style to speed things up so I can work on the actual game instead of just animation. It's pretty charming as a style and took a fraction of the time to animate, so I'm actually not that disappointed.

Would have liked to keep working on the more detailed version but this will make life a lot easier and will allow me to finish making the game within my lifetime.

Really? I felt like it had two really glaring faults;
1) In spite of the narrative implying you could do anything with enough determination, there were only a whopping two non-neutral endings you were fixed too. Determination being able to change spacetime shit within the context of the game but still be powerless in the face of a linear narrative seems to undermine the point. Even if the player has so much determination they try to mod their game to get a different ending, there technically could still be real world physical constraints which trump that determination.

2) Meme dialogue. I don't mind the mention of memery or individual memes, but when you're rehashing jokes about spagetti and wringing out the "pun then mad" dialogue format simply for the sake of getting the audience to spread those memes to potential customers, you're making your game a product first and an art form second. It's a stretch to say games are pure art or something, but I'm certainly not going to just judge it economically.

I felt like number 1 kept it from being perfect (a 10) and number 2 kept it from being someone I'd recommend to someone out of the blue (a 9 or 10).

Is my scale just harder or did you not consider those to be problems?

>The main loop creates the Char and Map objects
>The Battle Prep loop instantiates the chars and generates a map
>Combat loop does movement, combat, etc.

So my question is this: What's the best way to pass the reference of the map and chars? Simply adding them as a parameter would just end up making the code extremely unwieldy and it wouldn't really be a good way to make any sort of concurrence.

Can I make some sort of shared memory pool and then simply mutex my way out of it?

So I just started a new project. Basically when Halo 3 came out me and my friend made this custom game, where you're 4 in a tiny arena with nothing but gravity hammers, and you have to hold on to a ball for a certain amount of time to win. Its pretty hectic and always fun, and now I want to make an actual game based on that. I've started work on server/client related code, so already I have multiple people on a server "playing", and theres a basic gravity hammer mechanic right now (thought it always sends everything flying at the exact same speed, irregardless of how close or far away they are).

"All" that's left to do is tweak the gravity hammer impacts, add a ball and a map and I have a demo. I should have done this before.

>>
>>137278930
But then I'd still have to parse the objects as parameters to each of the loops? I sort of want to avoid that if possible.
>>
>>137278714

>>137279101
Nah thats not me. I've been here for a while but I always just start new projects and then stop because they become too much for me to handle on my own. I'm hoping this will be simple enough in terms of programming so I can actually have something to show to potential artists and what not later on.

I want to make something that anyone can pick up and play but that can have a lot of depth in it for those that decide to look into it. I guess you could say something like Rocket League but hopefully something that has more skill involved.

In a sense.
Only class/main brackets should be on the left margins. And even a lot of people would argue that.
Everything else should get indented <AMOUNT>.
It's a shame GM doesn't come with default formatting options.

Also I'm not sure if GML supports it, but if you only have a one statement return, you should skip the brackets for both line count and formatting so it looks cleaner.

Depending on the ide, there are different error vs warning configs for debug and release.

For instance, in debug mode, something might be a warning, which compiles, but in release, it's treated as an error, and won't compile.

You can change this in the IDE settings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQGr32zpl7w&index=16&list=WL

The demon hunter one was useful for setting up the body while the other one is just great overall.

It's like both gave me the perfect approach to forming anatomy. From the demon hunter video, the body is made with cylinders that you all fit together for the chest and limbs. From the other video, the face is easier to work with if you make each feature (eyes, nose, mouth) individually and stitch them together in a smart way so that you can then expand the outer area of the finished face to form the head.

They already can! Scenes can include their own CSS, which may target anything the base koboldadventure.css targets, and which will overwrite the base koboldadventure.css! It's not really advised to just go changing random elements' color or appearance, though. Heck, I even have a well documented animate function ready to animate CSS class changes!

The tl;dr of it is that one of the devs for the game made a post asking for advice on what to do when you find your game being pirated, and posted a link to the pirate bay. He was lamenting how it's devastating and blah blah blah crybaby stuff.

He got called out for uploading it himself, made several edits, and eventually deleted the thread in a meltdown.

Could you rewrite that so that it took the direction (north etc) as an argument?

The fact that I'm using gamemaker shows I'm not a great programmer, but I can help you out physics wise.

Pretty sure drag force isn't calculated like that. What's "f"? Speaking generally (ignoring things like the shape and area of the object etc), drag force is going to be a function of some small constant times your velocity squared. You should always be taking drag force into account, even if you're applying more force. The only time there's no drag force is when your velocity equals zero, which isn't a condition you should have to check for if your calculation is right, as the force will come out to zero if V=0.

with all this 3d talk, where would I find semi-advanced animation tutorials for blender? I know how to rig and add keyframes and change the interpolation mode to the different presets, IK rigs and stuff but having nice, complex animations is just beyond me even with these tools.

When I look at 3d animations in games I just know it would take me a whole week of work to make them as good as they are. I could probably do it in the end, but it would feel like calculating the cross product of a 50x50 matrix on paper. There has to be a better way.

Do it the way Monty Oum did his animations for his projects like RWBY. Use motion capture for slow, important scenes, and speed-animate action sequences. The action scenes move so fast that people aren't able to detect the mistakes and corner-cutting. There's lots of tricks like camera focusing, exaggeration, depth of field, etc., that you can use to trick viewers into believing the animation looks better than it really is. Use it to your advantage. The goal is to knock out the animation as fast as possible so that you can finish the project in a timely manner.

It's an American anime series. The episodes are short but it's superb. Highly recommend it. Think waifus + witch/wizard school + edgy and cute character designs + massive action sequences + interesting lore based on folktales and historical heroes. It's incredible for a low budget animated series. A lot of weebs will shit all over it because it's not made in Japan and not but it's great.

It's the 3D animu of rooster teeth's now-deceased head animator/resident-actually-Japanese-weeaboo. It kinda goes from a mediocre fanfiction character building show to a highschool drama to an actually oddly kinda violent show (this was immediately after Monty died, but allegedly monty had pre-written this). The music is mostly nice save for this really bad rapper they sometimes put on, it always sounds like hes either trying to be kid friendly or forcing out profanity to look cool.

It's worth watching at least some of it for the animation, even if you're just there to critique it. Monty is (well, was) pretty much completely self taught and runs with different priorities than most animators. It's kinda weightless and unrealistic, but that makes it feel all the more animeish. He's more like a kid with action figures than a traditional animator, for better or worse. I really hate how he would just ignore facial animation in some fight scenes though, but it might not have been worth the time. There's also a fair bit of fabric clipping etc.

I use "f" whenever I am using a float, not sure if it's even necessary.

>Pretty sure drag force isn't calculated like that.
Well biggest concern was to make it look and feel right. For the booster thing, they are only there to go from walking into "glide-mode", speed in my game is set by a vector called speed. What I am doing is basically calculating its float values, in this case one half of the z value(the other being the S-key). I use it as the translation component of my models Matrix4.

Thanks for the pastebin, I'll report back when I am done with it.

Trying to design my game before I jump in and start actually piecing together some software, maybe some 'idea guys' can give me some advice.

I plan on having a camera similar to animal crossing GC, as I think for a 3d game it has the least chance of becoming a nuisance to program and debug. However, I also plan on generating an open world, so I have a place to put interesting things. No way I, an army of one, can hand craft an interesting world, and that also goes against some of my other philosophies.

I know minecraft's open world worked well because it was all manipulable, and the first person camera helped. By randomly generating the world, but having a limited camera view and a static landscape, I think things will likely get fucked over.

Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I really don't want to fuck my game over at the fundamental level before I even start working on it.

Definitely look into moving a bit of this code into methods/functions, like another anon mentioned.

It looks like (from the ide styling) most of your variables are static. That's generally bad practice, especially for something like this. You're using an object oriented language, so might as well use it to its fullest extent.

if OO gets your tits in a knot, java can sort of be used as a functional language, but it's a little hacky.

If you do need the expressivity of XML (i.e. you have a tree) then you should use a lighter format like JSON. JSON is actually probably more expressive or at least more useful, too, because it has a weak notion of typing.
>>
>>137298228
>im not a weeb

>>137298461
Agreed.

What do you mean a weak notion of typing, though? Isn't that something parser/language dependent? XML and JSON is just character data before something makes sense of it.
>>
>>137298632
JSON has tables, lists, numbers, strings. XML is just markup.

The other big issue I have with XML is that it's often difficult to decide whether it's appropriate for something to be an attribute or content.

I'll write something more elaborate when I get home, but if you want a quick solution you could just have a key which toggles between walking and hover-boosting (like you're on an air hockey table), though you'd also need to be able to skid into landings (decelerate when you go back to walking). Actually walking can just be like using tiny boosters, you can just manipulate the Boostconstant. I'll still write something more elaborate later, but in general just make sure speed acceleration etc are calculated continuously.

You can grab the ball now. Pretty fucking wonky right now but thats normal. Whats weird is that while the ball follows "pretty well" the client that picked up the ball (because I remove physics from the ball so it can follow the player without gravity and shit getting in the way), the other clients and server don't pick up on that change, so their ball keeps falling back to the ground.

yeah but what you're doing is running a whole new set of stuff when you're walking instead of running. Just make a variable called "boostersOn" which is 1 when boosters are on and 0 when they aren't (which can be toggled with a key or something). Then replace the boostingConstant B with (walkingConstant+boostersOn*boostingConstant). No hard written ifs are required.

In my experience, most devs have a budget of no more than $500 to spend on art for a game they're not sure will do well. No revenue sharing, not part of the team, just a freelance artist hired for the assets that will, beyond their flat rate, get their name in the credits.

This is still seen as a pretty big investment for most, so don't expect to make bank on amateur devs. You want to make money as an artist for games, you need a degree and/or comparable experience, a nice portfolio and a willingness to basically beg for attention. Best case scenario you get picked up by a team with an established company, no matter how small, and get a sizeable flat rate or revenue share for your work.

You want to art for amateurs, you work for free or for pennies. Devs here aren't willing to shell out for what are basically practice games. And it's a little rude to expect them to pay you when they aren't getting paid themselves.
>>
>>137306449
well that's kinda contradicting, because you are taking the risk of releasing your games and want it to succeed so being uncertain whenever it will succeed or not is not gonna help your game succeed
but i see your point
