Its a great mech, but only in certain situations.

Most of the time its just a slow piece of shit, but when you have a team backing you up and huddling around an atlas, it becomes king of brawls, and can easily lead mighty charges into enemy hordes.

Its got a fuck load of armor, so you can push around a corner right into the enemy, and if you team comes in right behind you, you take the brunt of fire and tank it like a boss while your team takes way less damage and wipes up the enemy mechs.

Most people see an atlas and immediatley focus on it. Use that to your advantage.

Playing in the pub ghetto with an atlas is suffering though. Nobody will back you up, and will leave you behind to die almost every time.

Tabletop doesn't have a hardpoint system. Every mech is essentially a gunbag.

Changing stuff about a mech is hard, costly, and time consuming so most mechs run around stock. You can swap out one weapon for a similar weapon like a medium laser to a medium pulse, change armor, and add heatsinks relatively easily. Most custom mechs are still similar to their original.

To customize things like the structure, add case or swap engines you'll need a factory to do it, so it's very rarely done.

I found some house rules to bypass the needing of factories, what we do in our homebrew rules is say that the person who wants to refit the mech needs to live as the mech for a day, moving at a scale speed and firing off it's weapons whenever he sees us around the house (Bzzt for lasers, THUNK THUNK for UAC, zzzZZZZAP! for PPC. etc etc) if he upgrades the engine he has to make louder engine noises than usual when moving and we slap him on the bum and back whenever we see him (pretending to be lights haha) if he gets destroyed by this we bouce on his chest and scream death from above! lol haha

To add on to what >>137237572 said, omni mechs are gunbags, which is why they were such a huge deal.

For your standard mech, everything is hardwired and designed to fit specifically where they are intended. You cant rip out a ppc and stick in an lrm launcher, you need to have the missle feeds and other shit set up.

Then there is an issue of weight, mech computers talk with their gyroscopes and weight distribution is important and hard coded. So that is even more time fucking about. Some things are easier to switch out, like lasers with similar sized ones, or lrms to srms.

This is why you see ferro fibrous armor so often instead of endo; its easier to just rip off the old armor and slap new armor on for added protection.

Now back to omnis. So wiht an omni, you design a skeleton and that skeleton and internal gubbins are going to be there no matter what. Now with omni pods, you are literally just plug and playing pods for mission parameters. The gyro is already set up to deal with the different weight distributions variant configs will throw its way.

Now does this manifest itself in TT? Only if you are playing a campaign and something of accountant tech at that. Otherwise you are free to do as you wish and make optomized monstrosities like this.

Okay, I'm new to the game so bear with me. This is my current loadout. I'm thinking of switching to an Artemis system AND swapping out my 2 LRG Lasers and AC/5 for an AC/10. I planned it out on smurfy, but basically I would have to drop all those weapons for an AC/10 and Artemis system and also I would have to reduce my Armor to 441. Is this worth it? I would be decreasing my Firepower from 73 to 56 but I would be increasing my DPS from about 4 to 7.3

I can post my mockup loadout on Smurfy if anyone gives a shit

If you run into that thing and it's fresh and in your optimal range, you are going to get blown the fuck out, straight up.

It's fragile, it has shit hitboxes and hardpoint layouts, but in a 1v1 scenario at its proper range it will wipe everything short of an Atlas out of existence easily.

Brawling is a patient affair and not the easiest thing for new players to learn so don't get discouraged if you get blown the fuck out learning to do it.

Also the other guy is right when he says the Orion IIC is a bad mech. It is, there's no other ways about it. Yeah that is a nasty ass brawling setup, but it's still a poor mech.

Pilot matters much more than mech, and at low tiers this is incredibly true, but as you get better and rise up and start facing real opponents in Tier 3 to Tier 1 you're going to feel its limitations.

Thing about paint, is that you can use some paint thinner and wash it all off and try again.

A tip for you is to use a thinner brush, maybe get a jewelers eye loupe/magnifying glass. and a model stand to hold the figure while you paint it.

Other then that practise and patience is key.

I could probably use the glass, but I was using the smallest brush I had for the entire job and I thinned my paints as much as possible. My hand just shakes way too much and I really don't know how to fix that, I kept having to use my other hand to help stabilize it and even then doing the cockpit was still hell.

In my defense I think its actually mostly the figure that's shit, my guardsmen don't look NEARLY as bad as the battletech figures I paint. I thin my paints 1:1 like I should, and it looks fine on a guardsmen but the moment I touched the bushwacker I may as well have quit.

Also the figure is fine, though a tip for you is to give the figure a coat of black or white paint first as a base, try both to find your preferece.

Depending on the modifications, it can be anything from a simple field refit to "fuck this, strip it down to the base chassis and rebuild it from scratch at a factory".

So TT 'Mechs tend to be less radically modified than MWO ones. Also, Paul utterly fucked up the construction system in many ways, so MWO-level builds are definitely not what you'd often run in TT.
