I think I made a mistake when I embarked to this place. While the natural landscape is fantastic for a fort and I've had a great time designing this place, it is completely devoid of action. The fort is 5 years old now and the only threat it has seen was some two headed person who rocked up and was promptly beaten to death by a crowd of dwarves.

It's a shame really, invasions make the game so much more fun. I'm going to keep this save going and make this fort as prosperous as possible, but I think I might start a second world and embark into a dangerous place for more FUN.

Building a fort with a lot of aboveground features and OH MY FUCK THE TREES.

We need to implement sapling control and prevent tree growth. My only options are to pave everything with floor tiles or cut trees every five minutes.
>>
>>136990763
Just create a grid covering the entire embark, consisting of 3-5 tile wide pathways made out of wooden floors(or rock, if you're feeling generous).

The pathways will secure permanent access for the caravans, and the untouched ground tiles will serve as tree plantations and horticultural gardens.

It's a little bit different to Starcraft.

Imagine if a math professor decided to make a fantasy world/story generator from the ground up, and it just so happened that it was possible to try and play either a city builder or adventure game in the middle of the thing.
>>
>>136999556
So it's a bit like Dominions?
>>
Someone should make a big arachnid mod. They should add harvestmen, pseudoscorpions, whip scorpions, amplypygi and camel spiders. The spider species in the game also need to be fleshed out.

Seriously, I can't believe that there are only four types of spiders in the game, two of which are fictional. The two real-world spider types that DO exist in the game are both meme spiders. The fictional spiders are both creepy crawlie stereotypes("cave spider"? "phantom spider"? really?).

While those aren't real arachnids, someone should also add sea spiders.

You can, the reason that's hard to read is because I prefer a square tileset, so you get large spaces between the characters.

Sadly, if you want a square tileset there's not a great solution to this problem yet.

df/data/init/init.txt has lines like [FONT:sometileset.png] and [FULLFONT: [GRAPHICS_FONT: [GRAPHICS_FULLFONT: which control that in full screen/windowed and graphics/non-graphics states.

You save the tilesets themselves into the df/data/art folder, I don't like square ones myself, but it's hard to tell if it would be better or worse for you individually to play with without you trying it.

There's a Truetype function that will replace some of the text with a properly rendered font, but it doesn't replace all of the text by a long way, and comes with it's own issues.

In the end it'll just come down to your personal taste; you're going to take a while to learn to 'read' the game anyway, so pick something you like the look of. You can always change later, but for the longest time you're going to feel like you could never abandon your first tileset.

Everyone where? Or rather, which everyone? Also 40+ encompasses 30 releases, so you would need to be more specific. 40.24 and 42.06 have very different problems.
>>
>>137007902
>- Why everyone is saying 40+ is shit? Do you recommend it?
While it changed the game radically(in most ways, for the better), many players found the first 0.40 release underwhelming after all the hype. The fps became worse in both modes, for example. The hyped elf and goblin sites were disappointing in many ways, too: the elf sites turned out to just be "smoothed" trees, and the goblin sites became nearly unvisitable due to the adventure mode lag. The dwarf sites were ok, but how much they differed from ordinary player forts triggered some negative reactions from the playerbase.

The quest overhaul also came as a disappointment to many: instead of actually receiving quests, you now had to ask for rumours about monsters/bandits and then just choose whether to give yourself the quest to go hunt them down. There where some special cases where you'd receive orders from military commanders, and they'd show up on a special screen, but that was it.

In fort mode, the 0.40 release included a bug that prevented goblins from using mounts during sieges. There was also another bug that prevented 99% of all siegeing forces from reaching your fort at all, making the game less fun.

The recent 0.42 releases fixed most of the things that were bad in 0.40. For example, some of the old quests are back. The sieges are back, and the siegers use mounts properly again.

We still have to good things introduced in 0.40, including world activation, climbing mechanics, more advanced combat, and so on. 0.42 also introduced more exciting features, like libraries, taverns, travelling bands of performers, ability to specify materials at workshops, and so on.

I'd say the game in its current form is more fun than it has ever been.

Interpreting the spectra, sure. NMR is piss easy to solve, MS is harder.

But the actual theory about NMR is tough. It's all quantum stuff, how spins interact and how pulse sequences affect your experiment.

Naturally with these Curses+1 sets you need to have the goblin soldier tile switched to the 1/2 (forget the number, fffff, 171) and the column tile switched to the NBSP (tile 255) tiles.

Guys help.

I'm a Legendary Fighter/Wrestler Vampire in Adventure with good sword skills for when things get hairy. I've killed literally hundreds of things and the one time I've taken anything more than a bruise in that time was getting clipped in the lung by an arrow when I was in a room full of bowmen.

I need to find a challenge. Something that takes more thought and style than
>single throat punch
>single head kick
>strangle
>fracture leg with punch then single throat punch once they give into pain

That's what most of my fights are.

Oh, yeah. They're opposed to life, but I guess that won't help with you being a vampire. Anon posted the brief life of a fort on a husking glacier recently and some of his husks were fighting each other, so maybe they retain their preundeath hostilities? I know I've taken adventurers to husking biomes before and been attacked by husks after getting husked myself, so maybe you'll still have some fun. I won't promise it, though.
If nothing else you can become a husk yourself and have a husked hydra bro to raise hell with (if it doesn't try to kill you, I mean).

Seriously; what are you actually complaining that he's not added, you want him to remove the fortress mechanics and make some new gimmick? He's not going to add a tutorial because it would be a complete waste of time when it's outdated in a year or so of updates, and he'd have you whining that he's not wasting MORE time making sure the tutorial works.

Look at the big picture, if all goes according to plan then DF will be finished in 30 years, do you really think it would be a sensible investment of his time to make a tutorial, UI and graphics that he'd have to spend time updating throughout that 30 year development?

I'd build it above-ground.

It IS entirably possible to do it underground, as well, though. In one of my earliest forts, I actually dug out a large underground city with tall towers and avenues, one of which lead to my noble's personal "castle". It was also the first fort where I managed to produce enough food to survive. Needless to say, the first large gobbo invasion wiped the fort out completely. I remember having a great deal of fun exploring the ruin in adventure mode(I wish invaders would still remain in ruined forts. I also wish that the countless merchants and their stupid living wagons would fuck off).

I'mma stop you right here. I know part of the title card says Dwarf Fortress, and that this is ostensibly a game. Easy mistakes to make, focusing on that. But such has never been the Toad's design philosophy.
All of Dorf Fort to date - ALL OF IT - has been Toady trying to get the framework built. Building the world that the player interacts with. Making it live and breathe. Fort Mode and Adv Mode both are just crude tools for allowing the player to interact and effect the world that DF creates. Really, he doesn't intend for them to remain separate modes by the end of development.

So you're sitting here, staring at the little box of the fort mode map, whinging because you've opened the lid and saw a few familiar looking toys, without picking them to see both how they've changed, and all the new ones laying under them.
History continues to advance and react to the player during play now.
Emotions, arts, philosophy, and society are all beginning to be incorporated into an interdependent system that touches everything.
Combat saw a serious overhaul, and more is being done to improve many other underlying mechanics.
All races' sites now render in the world and can be interacted with in Adv Mode, as can their populations, along with all the various savage races and animals.

And you're sitting here complaining that *mining* still works the same.

point is none of that art and culture really effects the gameplay experience much, and it's hard to come in contact with all that "framework" shit when your only interaction is still caravans and sieges, which come less often now. And the actual gameplay experience is a lot less balanced now with skills growing quickly and infinite logs and food

And what's your point, do you think sales are going to decrease, are you worried that DF won't be attracting enough new players to sustain the servers?

Pointless detail is rather the point of making a game like DF, it all seems pointless and irrelevant until you get enough of these pointless mechanics to start having interesting interactions.

Actually, it does.

A civilisation which tolerates slavery will enslave their enemies, resuting in lots of slaves in their sites, all of which can be rescued in adv mode.

The culture of each civ also determines whether they're literate or not, and if they are literate, what kind of literature they specialise in.

Yeah none of this means anything while playing the fort. Even the additions of taverns and libraries add basically nill except permahappy dorfs.
My point still stands, why do taverns and trees take years to develop when the entire framework of the game took 1 year of supposed focused work

Some new gameplay content, or at least not letting the new features get in the way of the balance of gameplay, ie infinite logs and permahappiness.

It seems like this game has evolved from "claw your way into existence through a onslaught of terrors" to "build a cozy cabin in the woods as part of your own special fantasy world"
>>
>>137047860
But you can still claw your way into existence if you don't embark somewhere nice or neutral, there's plenty of room for both of those AND playing adventure mode and trying to build it by yourself.

DF has plenty of space for all of these things.

DF has never been hard. You were just bad at it. The idea of this superhardcore survival experience is a meme perpetuated by constant influx of bewildered new players buying into the "losing is fun" slogan and playing badly for a couple of months for their hardcore gamer cred.
The reality is that fort mode, as a game, is a simple resource management game with only a few numbers that actually matter. DF as a simulator is a remarkably deep and complex procedural monster that connects all those simple mechanical elements. If you're playing just for the former, you'll never not be disappointed by it once you actually git gud.
That's your real issue. You're still playing to the hypebeast thinking it's supposed to be the final boss, but you've slain it already. Nothing you do will ever make df the game you thought you were promised.
>>
>>137051073
To be fair to him though, the game was considerably easier to lose back in the 2D versions, given that it was inevitable.

It wasn't, though. You could make an unkillable fortress in pretty much exactly the same ways as you do now.
>>137052194
Irrigation only had to be done once a year. It was pretty easy once you learned how, like piercing an aquifer or building a well in 3d versions. It was one of those basic skills that everyone learned in their first few forts, and then performed as an afterthought in every subsequent fort. Just a chore, really. My personal method was just to close off my farms and flood them every winter, and then drain them when spring came around. But a lot of players would just farm the cave river and accept the occasional drowning.

You could just not dig that far or use impenetrable defenses, same as now. Also, atom smashers worked on demons back then, and they came in little spurts and with no variety, compared to army of procedurally genned monsters that come now. And soldiers were even even stronger then than they are now; there was no attribute cap. With no deadly dust or webs or steel clowns, etc, you could take on hell with wrestlers and win.

>>137066847
Not yet we can't. I'm sure at some point we will be able to though.

So, for what it is worth, generating exposed volcano tubes which face north and west is easy, east facing is much less common, and I have yet in all of these worlds to produce a single non-drained south facing exposed volcano tube.

Jack drainage way up, temperature way down, and sprinkle in areas between 100 and 400 elevation with 100 volcanism and you get glaciercano all day erryday, jack savagery up and put the "desired evil squares in large regions" up to at least half of the glacier area you want and you get the horrorglaciers like I'm producing. Using world-painter just makes it quicker to survey them and pack in hundreds of volcano sites on a 33x33 map.

Putting mineral rarity from 750 to 1000 like this tends to give you a good ratio of volcano sites with flux and at least one iron ore.

Some of them (for some reason) have magnetite with veins of limonite stuck in chalk and hematite around the edges, surprisingly consistently when they show up (as in multiple sites on the same map will be like this if one is), no clue why.

Mountain erosion tends to occur at a diagonal for some reason, often leaving an extended northwest to southeast wall around a tall volcano tube. I haven't been able to determine if it is possible to make them change to north-south or east-west, and haven't even gotten them to show up as northeast to southwest walls with the same consistency. I suspect it is part of the same code that makes dorfs preferentially dig from the top left, grazers eat from the top left, and so forth.

As a fellow lakeside cliff anon, who also shares crundle woes, let me give you a weapon from my arsenal to fight fps loss.
Reduce your graphical fps. By a lot. When I dropped the cap from 50 to 10 my fps went from ~35 back up to ~90. While moving an enormous amount of magma. It makes cursor movement and menus a little sluggish, but it's easy to get used to.

42.06 crashes?

I've been running it since the alpha 1 release came out and it's ridiculously stable. The only crashes I get are vanilla game related stuff like saving near a library and loading up 200 npcs that want to kill each other -> splut crash.

Just wish boats were a thing because this spot would be a good location because the lake would act as a mountain pass of sorts. Though the location further north might have been better.

Capped myself at 30 dwarfs though channeling the key part of the fort is taking ages, though it should start to get functional by then. A few years in not really doing much.

Started the big area from z level 150 down to 137 and need to go to 123. Curse this desire to build something spanning so many levels, even got a design for a dwarf head to put at the back of it.

Using code page 437 is pretty common in roguelikes. It's not that unique for DF. While it takes a while to get used to, I wouldn't say it makes the game hard.

>Fermenting mushrooms would be really ineffective due to the low carb content, and even if it were effective it would honestly taste like shit. Keep in mind that fermentation is a process of spoiling in hopes that enough good flavors are retained to compliment the alcohol made to produce a good drink. Sometimes, even if you choose delicious things to ferment (fruits, etc.), the end result could taste like crap based on a number of factors. I've had quite a few fermentation disasters that looked very promising at the start. I could not even imagine how bad fermented mushrooms would taste...

I fell and kicked the throat out of a toddler. As be bled all over the floor the fucker decided to attack me so I got blood on my boots. This threw me into a fit of rage and decided to kill the entire city with my bare hands. Afterwards I lit the surrounding farms on fire. I decided that this was my place now and decided to kill the lord. As I approached the castle, or whatever, a cave collapsed and knocked me unconscious and coated me in sand. As I awoke I had sand in my loincloth which didn't help my rage anyways. I decided to strangle the lord till he passes out and mutilated his face by pinching everything on it and tearing his eyes out, leaving him to bleed out. I quickly claimed the site and has ruled the place ever since. Ofcourse I did sustain somedamage to my left foot, and need crutches. I later that week killed a night troll with my bare hands. Beat his head in with my crutch.

There's also Ultima Ratio Regum, although that one is still very early in development, and not that much of a game yet.

Is there a guide to the various ways to save yourself tedious micro, or are we going to have to compile one?

Also, do we have a 1337 version of this flowchart, for hardcore neckbeards such as myself? It'd be nice to have a little checklist to work through when I just want to set up for a megaproject, I have a nasty habit of forgetting certain things.

Actually, my VERY first encounter with DF was when PCGamer included it on their demo disc(i think it was back in 2007-2008, when I was still in elementary school). I tried it out, failed to understand anything, and subsequently deleted it after a few minutes. It wasn't until 2010, when I was in high school, that I found out about the game again. That time, I started playing seriously.

I think I spent half an hour in my class trying to figure out what the game meant by Burrows, and being confused that -well- the dwarves weren't burrowing whereI told them to.

Three years later, I suddenly remembered that the game existed, started looking for it again, then stumbled onto the Boatmurdered story. Everything after that, as they say, is Legends Mode.

Alright I did a bit of science.

So, it might just be my retardedness kicking in, but I didn't actually think the elevation x-y variation mattered when you had preset terrain values, but after doing this I think that is why I kept finding the same sort of northwest/southeast oriented walls, north/west facing full volcano tubes and south/east facing drained ones.

Just changed the X variation, then the Y variation, then the other way, like 3200x1600 > 3200x800 > 3200x400 > 3200x0 > 0x0 > 0x400 > 0x800 and so forth, all with the same preset elevation values I used to make this: >>137040515

Needs more work still to see if we can work out exactly what values do what, it isn't as simple as I thought it would be.

It looks kinda like it takes the preset seeds then it runs a pass with the x/y variations and then it does the erosion.

I did several works with the same 800x1600 values and saw similar mountain range distributions scroll past like.

low low high low low low
low high low low low low
low low high high high low
high low high low low low
low low low high low high

Then

low low high high high low
high low high low low low
low low low high low high
low low high low low low
low high low low low low

Then

low low low high low high
low low high low low low
low high low low low low
low low high high high low
high low high low low low

Where the values seemed to have rolled over past the edge of the map and continued around during the x/y variation seed stage I guess?

they get several attacks due to all their biting heads, so you absolutely need a shield to block anything you don't dodge. also, you should damnwell be a legendary dodge or you'll be bit on seven body parts at once.

blunt weapons like punches and kicks have never been a good choice against huge enemies. you have to either strangle them or bite/chew them apart.

you need to profane or deface a temple in order to be cursed with werebeast syndrome

the easiest but unsafe way to become a werebeast however is to simply be bit by one while they're transformed. if you ever find a lone humanoid inside a cave outside a city who's basically naked, they're probably a werebeast. they'll transform on a certain phase of the moon, so you'll have to wait until then.

What's the difference between smoothing existing rock walls and building actual walls/floors out of a material?

I get that it's probably only gonna be a value difference for when you're making a noble's room

But I took the habit of making hundreds of stone blocks so I could make all my walls and corridors out of them, but it seems like everyone just recommends to smooth and engrave the walls
I dunno, most of the time when I dig, my rooms have dirt and roots between the rock, so there would be ugly holes left if I tried to keep the natural rock

Gotta use dfhack to do it.

If you use tiletypes you can switch them to stone, engrave them, and then switch back to constructions, or you can use advfort with some tweaks to the advfort.lua to allow you to engrave constructions.

I use that to test my engraving tilemagic since they start out smoothed and usually have a variety of different colors.

No, that's just how you respond to charging. You try to dodge normal attacks anyway. And if you dodge them your shield skill goes nowhere.
>>
>>137178659
>So I've been wasting hundreds of rock blocks and precious dwarf time when I could've gotten more value out of natural walls?
Depends. If you just want to generate as much wealth as possible, then yes, you wasted the time. If you used the blocks to build something you personally think looks nice, however, I'd say it's time well spent.

DF is not a hard game. Giving yourself your own goals is an important part of the experience. The game might not reward you for everything you do, but that doesn't stop you from feeling rewarded when looking at how aesthetic your fort has become.

I think it's just the difference between , and . but I'm not sure which is which, I use d and f for long and short waits myself.

Hit ? and then keybindings to see what they are, then you can hit esc and go down to keybindings > up to adventurer and change them there if you want.

These giant cactuses, they actually have big wooden ribs inside. They’re kind of like a vessel, like a boat, and so of course we have those in Dwarf Fortress now. So you get this wood from the saguaros, but no one knew how dense it was, and so we actually had a fan order some from, like, this saguaro wood vendor, and then he did liquid displacement or whatever and measured it and put all the data online, and then we just put it into the data file, and credited the person and stuff, and now there’s saguaro wood density.
