So just something I wanted to say about the style trials

I understand these new players are still learning about their games. That's completely respectable and it's a good thing to have some new content creators with fresh ideas on board. However, so far the style trials have been... underwhelming I suppose?

Like, I remember the concept for them was to have these "mini challenges" that people could do as alternatives to vst to show off some cool tiny bits of creative gameplay or impressive use of game mechanics. But all of the videos so far are just so very bland and with the exception of jetman who is already a vst veteran, there's nothing remotely interesting about the clips submitted

I don't want to discourage you guys who've been doing these things but honestly the style trials are more like "people learning to play the game: the series". Because all I saw especially in this second round of videos was some really basic shit and some laughable or nonexistent explanations of what was happening on screen.

For everyone who submitted DMC, tough shit honestly it's just hard to be impressed by something after all this time but hey you can still go on and do something creative with the game. For sotherius, dude again I don't want to disrespect you or anything but that ng stuff was so incredibly bland and basic in comparison to your Bayo stuff. You can say that you're still learning to play over and over and over again but that's not gonna change the fact that literally all you have only posted the same old stuff with the same old enemies and the same old movements and attempting god knows what because there's nothing I've seen that resembles any form of attempting something new or creative. Just a thought, try asking the more experienced players how they got better because while learning on your own works for some things, it's better to take from more experienced people and build upon that.

Yeah. And it is a really good thing. Big thanks to Alps and Soth for doing this. I am honestly very happy that I started playing now when trials are happening. Good monthly challenges that push me out of my comfort zone w ppl telling why I did bad in the end.
Bad thing is that it is not very entertaining to watch yeah.

I think thats more on good players being lazy than new players not being good though

Posted about this a few days ago. I did exaggerate it a bit, but I'm still proud. In the meantime I've managed to do it many more times and I feel that the air game is really starting to open up.

It took me longer than needed because I didn't practice enough or because I kept putting off doing aircombos for some reason and chose to focus on random tech.

Good thing is that I feel I have a reasonable vocabulary of tech I can do so I hope to join the big boys soon.

I think it's supposed to tie into the whole DMC2 coin thing somehow. Also the anime (and something else, forget what) established that Dante has absurdly terrible luck and loses every bet he takes, so maybe Nero was made to play off that somehow.

Why would anyone play these games if they are afraid of being told they aren't good enough at something?
It should just be motivation to improve.
I'm bad at these games and currently trying to beat DMC 3 on DMD so I still have a long way to go before I can keep up with VST entries, and I think the way this community isn't afraid to tell you what you need to work on and practice is like the games we play here. These kinds of games can be difficult for people who aren't practiced at them, but that's all the more motivation to do better next time. Redo-ing old missions and getting better ranks on Bayonetta was what got me into these games in the first place.
How can people enjoy these games without being able to take the message that they aren't perfect or sometimes even very good at them?
And if they can, then what is the issue with how people behave here? I've never seen anyone being overly aggressive or cruel in their critiques. What I've seen has been very respectful and only pointers on how to improve. Or shitposts.

I personally liked Veli's entry the most. Especially the last combo where the Abyss leapt back out of his string and he sky starred and finished it.

Aside from that, I feel like style trials are mostly here to get people used to the idea of a) posting something for the thread and b) getting people used to thinking outside of the box(granted, I can see them running out of ideas and it eventually becoming "post your 1 minute of cool shit" monthly thing). I haven't really seen alot of familiar names in these so you know that new people are joining. It gives them a way to gauge progress, which is nothing but good.

Otherwise, second round was definitely the weaker of the two so far. It also doesn't really help that as far as I can tell, dmc is going to be the only game for third round. It's the only game I can think of that had environmental interactions that can be used stylishly, unless you count wall running in ninja gaiden and witch walk in bayonetta, which was pretty much only in like 3-4 stages and it isn't that conducive to making a cool combo. At least dmc3 had Dante spinning on a pole.

At least the problem with me not entering in style trials was that I had no idea what unique enemy properties I could showcase that was interesting AND useful AND informative.

Showcasing basic enemy breakdowns and tactics would be incredibly useful to new players who are interested in getting better at these games, but /cgg/ is mostly populated by experienced players anyway. Unless the info is that obscure/in-depth to inform experienced players about stuff they may not have naturally figured out, then the value is mostly lost. Aside from that, it's not really something that you can watch if you haven't played those respective games before either. At least with VST I can say "Oh wow that looked cool! Maybe I should check this game out."

Kudos to those who did enter and are supporting style trials - I just think the next one needs to be less niche.

I still remember one combo vid from the early, early, EARLY days where someone stayed airborne the entire time during a fight with a fallen and I was super impressed back then. With things like the style switch mod, I'm sure much more interesting things can be done.

Arachnes have tiny hitboxes and are a pain to get in the air. But thats ok and can be dealt with.They tend to jump out of combos, this can be dealt with too I guess, but ehhh 2hard4me

Arachnae's are legit just fun to fight and probably the most ninja gaiden-esque enemies that dmc3 has in that there's more push-and-pull to the fight rather than "I hit you once and then just wail on you forever".

As far as fallen, I don't remember which stage would be best to practice against them because it's been a long time since I've touched dmc3.

Hey hey, thread not kill!

Welp, have some Mayhem League progress for a bump.

Air game universally improved for all weapons by enabling ground combos to be used in air if hovering (where before, comboing in air would just automatically break hovering and move into the air combo tree).

A nice mix of air-specific moves and the versatility in games like T:D and Korra where your air game is comparable to your ground work.

Also, working on Kikaigui still, animation progress being made (though it seems kind of silly to show each individual hit as I complete it and add it to the combo tree).

For starters, because you think currently trying to beat DMD on DMC 3 leaves you within 10 miles of bad. Bad is being offered the easy mode after failing to beat that reaper outside Dante's office.

I think part of why more people dont get into action games like DMC is because the barrier of entry feels higher than it is. And the standards for "good" in terms of being able to discuss the game online are absurdly higher than some games.

I just started getting back in with DMC4 special edition, and Im not bad.
Dont say you are bad at the game when you are playing DMC 3 on dante must die mode. That kind of thing is part of the problem. It is kinda elitist and really disheartening to newer players.

It's also a much needed reality check. Sure you are more competent than the average player if you play on the highest difficulty. But lots of people can play on the highest difficulty and just be very mediocre.

Beating a game on the highest difficulty doesn't necessarily mean you actually are good at the game. It could mean many other things, like for example that you learned to exploit certain tactics to get past certain difficult segments

And yes the entry barrier SHOULD be high because we're in a community with very experienced players. Nobody is disrespectful when saying "you need to practice more" or "I didn't find your footage impressive". It's just the truth

To gitgud is to be one with the current meta. Take Chaser for example. He's so bad at DMC4 he switched to DMC3. He spent 3 - 4 years with no progress. The meta was always ahead of him.

Alps was at the peak of the Godhand meta once. But when the meta grew he didn't grow at all. That's why the nigga is a scrub lord now.

Then there are niggas who are ok with their current skills and accept that they can never reach the meta.

Then we have niggas like dosh who is the only person playing a non existing game which means the meta is non existent. He can do whatever he wants to do. It's in the original version as well. I think the deal with the whole song is that it's about the duality of Dante and Vergil. You've got one part that's hard rock and one part that's like a soft melody, then it starts being sung together, while you can take the lyrics as applying to each of them in different ways.

I wouldn't say that the challenge is self-imposed. If it was, the style system itself just wouldn't exist to encourage mixing it up. Sure, you can get through the game doing the same combo over and over again, shooting and dodging when necessary but when you see your rank stay at D, it at least encourages you to think about what you're doing.

In contrast to games like ninja gaiden, which are more about mechanic abuse than anything, so you see things like izuna drop and flying swallow being the most used strategy.

It sucks because I like ninja gaiden's more aggressive enemy design more but there is less incentive to mix it up and mechanically-speaking, there are less ways to actually mix up it even if you wanted to.

I want some mid point between dmc/bayonetta and ninja gaiden. But I'd you want it done right, I guess you gotta do it yourself.

I'm making dante as a boss for a tabletop rpg with the gimmick of changing styles:
No stance: attacks with sword and long range fire magic that simulates gunfire, can be four weak bullets or one short range strong one that knocks back

Swordmaster: uses only the sword, attacks four times per turn
Gunslinger: the fire magic can attack multiple enemies at the same time
Trickster: gains really high evasion, counters attacks and can teleport in front of distant enemies

And I need a good idea for what he could do in royal guard form, perhaps gain resistance and counter the damage he would have taken unresisted?

Would it be acceptable to trade gun switching for character switching? In order to free up the right trigger.

The only character this would really effect is Dante (And the ability to cycle melee weapons both backwards and forwards for Vergil), and it would only take away the shotgun.

Even then, I wonder if coyote's functionality couldn't be wrapped into E&I with more moves, or if Dante could use a system like Trish in DMC4SE to still switch between guns.

I bring up guns specifically because they've kind of been deemphasized over time. In 4 specifically they're used way more as movement and juggling tools than as a real core part of the combat. Maybe you could still switch guns the way Trish does or the way Vergil changes Summoned Sword formations, the point is just to free up the right trigger for Dante in the same way it's practically already useless for Vergil and Nero.

The select button isn't a good substitute, and on top of that removing taunt or DT just seems wrong. At least with guns there are other mapping options.

Like, say tapping it switched you to another character, while holding it down could allow you to do stuff like attack or play as both characters at once, and let you do things like tag combos or dual taunts. Things like that would be way more difficult if you relegated switching to the pad, select, or even clicking the sticks.

It's impossible to know how the next game would be designed. Rather than two health bars, just say that you're knocked out of the switch if you're hit while doing something like that, or maybe using both characters at once drains DT or another meter that otherwise needs to be refilled. There's a lot of ways you could balance it properly.

And while I don't have faith that Capcom will deliver a finished game, I do have faith that Itsuno will deliver a great combat system, and one way to extend the game's longevity and potential is to not fall into DMC4's trap of restricting each character to specific levels.

Especially since having dante/vergil/trish on one team means you'd have 3 divekicks that practically look the same from a casual perspective. Another argument would be that the game would most likely become even more loose than vergil in 4se. dmc is good because it is restrictive, which slowly gets more open if you practice enough. 2easypeasy4u characters like trish is not the type of gameplay we should want.

Especially so if they're going to add co-op/vs mode.

I want them to find another way to expand the system. Something like inertia/ cancelling/enemy knockback types/juggling.

I agree that it could diminish some of the individuality each character has, it would need to be handled well. In an ideal world I'd like Dante's mechanics to get even deeper and the other characters to get huge evolution to their gameplay in the same way he did. But at the same time, I feel like DMC4 should serve as a warning in trying to split up one game between so many characters. In answer to that and the reality of development constraints, the only thing I could think of was to have characters share gameplay space at the same time, so there's no chance of someone getting shafted by having their sections cut for time.

But if we really want to implement character switching then an obvious route would be to create specific characters that fit this role.
Lets say 2 new characters that can be switched in-between on the fly and their dt would be doppelgangerlike thingy when player controls both characters at the same time.
Design them so that switching between them is encouraged. For example One can launch enemies and the other is better at aerial combos. One excels at being mobile the other at controlling enemies (pulling, throwing, pushing)
Add special switching mechanics that tie in combos somehow, or have mobility properties, or have i frames, or cancel properties, or all at once.
Add attacks that summon the other one for doing additional hits, or throwing you up/forward
Add attacks that can only be done in doppelganger mode like Jackpot shot.
Possibilities are endless. I kinda hyped myself up for character switching stuff after writing this heh

It's likely impossible to be consistent at such technique. You hold the analog in the opposite direction while you tap lock on and the style at the same time. I've tried doing it by allowing xpadder to press lock on and style simultaneously but that doesn't work consistently.

You can try going into the Trial of Warrior room (mission 17 I believe) and you wont need to do these simultaneous button presses as the combat wheels allow you to attack towards their direction. You merely have to let go of lock on and attack towards one of the two wheels.

On a slightly related note, since anon posted a link to some God of War related blog post(I think it was Jaffe himself?) and it looks like there IS potential for depth and creativity there. It's honestly just the fact that the cancel windows are much tighter than devil may cry so you have to really know what you're doing.

I'll look into it when I'm not poorfagging but feel free to look into it if you guys can. Basically, there ARE jump/guard/magic/roll cancels but you pretty much have to cancel BEFORE the hitbox comes out for some of them(I think roll is the only thing you can cancel at any point?) So it's not like devil may cry where you can jump cancel whenever the hell you want. Once the hitbox is out, you're committed.

Feel free to check it out. Maybe we could reconsider GoW's eligibility?

What do you expect from a demo where you only get to fight 1 enemy, and have access to only 2 weapons that arent made to combo into one another. The full game will obviously be much better.

Sad thing is that it is also a downgrade from Duscae. Duscae combat was servicable, there's a just dodge mechanics, parry based on enemy animation, and 4 "command moves" like Dragoon Jump, Full Thrust (Stinger), Tempest, etc.

Now just dodge is kill. Parry is now just a straight up QTE that is random (before only some very specific attacks from enemies can be parried). Command moves is gone, and replaced with "team command moves" or whatever bullshit (it's not in the demo, might be okay who knows).

Point is, when Duscae came out for some reason a lot of people found the combat system to be too difficult, especially the Japs (lol)

I'm not saying Duscae is perfect, it's already way too easy (summon is practically skip combat button, amriter limit break is DT mode with instant win) but it is somewhat refreshing despite it is kind of janky and have weird hitbox. Now the combat is literally Witcher 3 tier of floaty, confused acrobatic mess. You get hit for unfair reason beyond your control, and you don't feel like you earn your win because the game kind of yank the controls and autoplay on its own.

minor reminder that the devs added dodge cancelling AFTER feed back, and the combat got rehauled at one point because the director's shit hands couldn't handle button mashing.

Some structural changes here, which I think are making things more interesting:

1) moves can now specify whether they factor into "variance tracking" (which determines move use repetition). This was originally so that gunshots wouldn't rapidly destroy your variance (since they fire the same attack over and over), but is also useful for environmental kills and taunts (more on that below)
2) We now track accuracy as well. So your gun "rank" and your melee "rank" are disparate things (accuracy and variance) and are factored together in determining your overall grade (something which is going to be added now)
3) Taunts are now treated as melee actions. This way they can be entered into the activator system; now gun and melee each have 3 key actions (aim / shoot / reload and melee / special / taunt), and for standard controller layouts taunting can be placed on the reload key so if the gun isn't out, taunting is easily accessible. Useful because...
4) Taunts are getting a major upgrade.They will now have points and names for your combo string and will affect your multiplier (in addition to the major boost they give to your combo/overcharge).

They also now trigger AI response; unlike Platinum's favored approach of "enraging" enemies and making them more dangerous, taunts have "hitboxes" and specify AI responses on a per-taunt basis. For instance, see here an AI whose personality values cause him to only shoot. By taunting him with "You're Next", he will immediately run straight for the player, ignoring any level hazards between you and him. In this video it lets me bait him into a charged Kikaigui attack

Taunts are difficult to get off (even chip damage cancels them) and leave you vulnerable, but they grant huge combo advantages and also let you abuse the bejesus out of the AI if you're skilled. You could, for instance, kill all the enemies in an arena without ever using an attack, just by taunting them into mines or pits (and yes that is an objective I would dream up)
