I really dislike shmups that have no sense of rhythm, they feel so hollow.

Play chorensha or gigawing or JSS at a high skill level though, and you feel your heart beating harder and harder in time to the beat, pupils dilating as your focus reaches the razor's edge

For what purpose, I'd only get to hear the full length if I paused the game.
>>
>>136525319
Now it makes sense... Sigh...

>>136528573
This. I don't hear it from many artists, but both ZUN and JynX usually have problems with their composition due to how long a stage or boss actually is. Most of the times, if a song is too long, they'll just scrap it.
>>
>>136529063
>in JSS the speed of enemy spawns creates a percussion line with their explosions as you shoot them down

why can't everyone else just do it right
>>
>>136529457
As someone who has a lot of musical knowledge, I assume most people need the stages to be done before composing for them in order to do that, most shmups don't. Even if you compose after everything's done, getting a fast tempo song that fits the whole stage in terms of rhytmn and feel is very very hard, though possible if you're experienced enough. All in all, depends on how good a musician is.
>>
>>136525638
thx mate

>>136526823
You fucking dumb cunt none of the games you mentioned come anywhere near to the bone shaking nerve racking intensity of point blanking precision dodges against lightening speed bullets in 1.5 max. no, you're making unnecessary movements and you're not keeping a bead on the core. you also need to to learn how to move in more of a fluid, arcing trajectory in order to better control the distances you move by using diagonals. start by moving in figure 8s when the screen is free of projectiles, and always play with analog or a joystick. Nothing else is acceptable.

>>
>>136547352
What's giving you troubles anon? I remember that walking mech being a pain in the ass.
>>
>>136547840
I'm an idiot trying to milk for the final score achievement on my first 1cc. I'm also not consistent at all with the stage 3 boss (the walking mech you're talking about, I believe).
>>
>>136548026
Well there's your problem anon, bosses in Kamui become much harder if you try to milk all their destroyable parts. And I cant even remember if you get extends in that game, so it's pretty much all risk no reward.

And yup, the Augumo if I remember his name correctly is pretty much the first difficulty spike of the game. Once you get him down only Stage 5 should stand i the way of your 1cc. Really you should just abuse that lighting gun for defense, makes things much easier.
>>
Are the shield power-ups random in Kamui? Could never find a pattern for them.
Number of kills maybe?

how basic bitch is touhou 8 easy as a first 1cc
>>
>>136558518
Shouldn't be too hard for a first 1cc. Stick to teams A or D and have a go at it. Don't forget to 420 graze it for more time. Good Luck.
>>
>>136540620
You'd have to not choose level 3 on the fifth and sixth stages. Suicide bullets would trigger if you choose it five times, not six.

The best route the getting the two extends ASAP is generally anything stage 1 -> Volcano stage 2 (Level 3) starting with 1000 item counter. I'm pretty sure you can at least get the first extend easily through Volcano. After that it's just scrounging up the remaining points however you can elsewhere. I find Graveyard is a pretty decent place for points because there's always ground for point items to break apart on in power up mode. Otherwise try downloading a replay on the leaderboard for the character you're using and see what kind of things they do for points.
>>
>>136559607
Yeah I can get pretty close to the 2nd extend on Volcano so I don't know if getting them both is possible
>>
>>136552737
As far as I can tell it's based on the number of item drops you've picked up.
>>
>>136560117
You can use the recharge in Volcano to get a lot more points out of it, unless you're using Casper in which case that's not necessary. But if you're that close to the second extend then it's probably easier just to get the points elsewhere rather than trying to learn the recharge.
>>
>>136560372
Recharges are a bit complex if you're not planning to play for score.

>>
>>136562802
Oh I know, that's why I said it'd be easier not to, and if he's close to the second extend then it's not necessary anyway.

Both extends are very much possible without worrying about recharges at all, as long as you understand letting point items break apart during power up mode.

Not him
I just recently 1cc'd Kamui. Great game.

I'm not 100% sure if you get extends, but I think you do. One thing that I think is good to do is to use the huge laser thing even if I didn't need to: the damage it does is really good, so even if you aren't having trouble with a pattern and your meter is full, you should use it(provided there is nothing below you to shoot at).

I've also 1cc'd Alltynex Second, another great game. I have to say, though, I'm not impressed by the second ship you unlock. Obviously, the sword is very valuable in this game, and not being able to use it to home onto enemies is such a huge deal breaker that I just can't use the shot type. Also, the laser not homing is a bummer as well.

I was planning on donig RefleX, but I'm working on the MoF extra stage now.

desu the Type B aircraft feels more like a challenge mode. Maybe its because I havent gotten gud with it but whenever I use it it feels like I have to fight the controls on top of dodging bullets. Its a painful experience but I do like how its abilities are kinda the opposite of the normal craft.

Are you asking for "good games for a beginner" or "best of the best"?

For the former, I'd suggest M.U.S.H.A. Aleste, Darius Gaiden, or Touhou's 7, 8, or 10. Those are the three I started out with. Of them, Darius is probably the toughest, but none of them off too much complexity for someone just starting out, and I still heavily enjoy them after playing them off and on for years.

For the latter, there's Battle Garegga, Ketsui and Dragon Blaze. Garegga's music is great, the scoring is very deep by design, and the rank system will keep you on your toes every second. Ketsui offers a scoring system that, while obtuse, let's you go about your own path and still get decent scores, as well as two different 2nd loops each with their own scoring mechanics and difficulty. Dragon Blaze is just a culmination of all things Psikyo; challenging first loop, punishing second loop, and the randomized stages keep the game feeling fresh.
>>
>>136671373
>the scoring is very deep by design
I love Garegga, but the scoring system in it is actually pretty retarded. It's basically just simple medal collecting and dumb milking.
>>
>>136672029
Plus this arbitrary score reward for destroying stuff with certain shot types is way too random.
>>
>>136672029
>>136672969
I said it was deep, and designed that way. Not necessarily that it was well-made. Personally, the fact that just about everything gives different point values based on shot type and whether you bombed it or not is stupid, but it's depth.
>>
>>136673551
Yea, it definitely has depth, that's true. You really must read a guide to score decently in it.
One thing I like about it though is how you use your bombs to score by destroying background stuff. It's fun being able to blow so much shit up and even get huge points for it.
Also the way the medals fall make the game always a new challenge in a different way which is also cool.

>>
>>136700971
Muchi Muchi Pork would also be good. I can only give plebeian report on SDOJ because I don't have it on 360 and it's unplayable in MAME, but the music is great, the stages look fun enough, and the chaining seems friendlier to people that can't keep on top of it in the other DDP games.
>>
>>136700971
I think it's more that the game is less accessible than a lot of the others, it's very new so it's not emulatable and I think 360 copies are still a little pricey.

I think I know the answer! It's because Japanese arcade players and developers evolved the genre, same with fighting games and rhythm games. Gameplay has always been the number 1 priority for them but that doesn't mean that other non-play features can't be polished to perfection. What you get in the end is a beautiful full package which just feels amazing to play.

DFK BL Arrange is basically Ketsui. It has re-arranged Ketsui music, the stages and bosses are kinda like DFK and Ketsui smashed together, and the shot types have the Ketsui homing.

In other words you are fucking casual who never played a game for score, since you probably can't even finish them. One of the good things about shmups is that they are about self improvement. It's like playing sports or learning an instrument, and not just silly entertainment crap for dumbfucks like you.

>Nice shit opinion you have, fampie.
It's not an opinon, it's a fact that your movement is very limited in run & gun games compared to shmups. You are just walking around on a 2d plane the whole time, sometimes crouching or jumping, instead of having a gameplay where you have to move around the whole screen the whole time.
>>
>>136725196
Not him but I'd say the limited mobility adds to the challenge. If you could move around the whole screen at will it would be much easier.

>>136725196
alien soldier has some nice movement tho
i wonder if theres any run n guns that have implemented a rank system or something, that could probably give them some more depth
>>
>>136725483
No, the limited mobility makes the genre just boring. The enemy patterns get basic as fuck because of this, much in contrary to shmups where the threats can get much more complex due the fact that you also have more mobility.
>>

>>
>>136729081

>>136729407
Near as I can tell it's based on not dying so you can get bombs/power up items when you already have max, and picking up the gold bars when they flash so you get the max value, with a small pittance coming from actually killing things. If that's the case there's probably an optimal route but it won't change much unless you're at the level where the few hundred difference actually means something.

>>
>>136740219
>Unless you're also playing for survival
See this is my point, a memorizer necessitates memorization for survival play, where DDP requires it for scoring; it's entirely feasible to play DDP for a simple 1-all without memorizing anything.

Depending on play style, S or W. S is pretty good for original, since you do the same amount of damage regardless of where you are on the screen and you can move quickly. W you can hit most or all of the screen starting from late stage 2 onward, and you can do more precise dodges. M is not great for 1.0, but apparently it's buffed for 1.5.

Bullet hell has lot so bullets, traditional less. And horizontal means the game is scrolling horizontally instead of vertically.
>>
>>136742710
Horizontal shmups are more likely to have environmental hazards, such as walls or ceilings that you have to avoid, in addition to enemies.
Most bullet hells are vertical, although some horizontal ones exist.

Traditional shmups have fewer bullets and a large hitbox that more or less corresponds to the ship sprite. Bullet hells give you a much smaller hitbox that may only be a small point on the ship, but increase the bullet count to compensate.

Relatively few (think ~40-50), fast bullets. Roughly ship-sized hitboxes. Tend to be from early 90's or earlier.

>Bullet hell
Many bullets (100+ for 90's, several hundred or potentially low thousands for modern). Smaller hitboxes to make such games even possible to play.

>Vertical versus horizontal
Technically it's just they way they scroll, but verticals tend to be more about enemy placement and bullet patterns, whereas horizontals are generally about a combination of enemy placement and environmental hazards.

>>136743663

Gradius, R-Type and Darius are the big three.
>>
>>136744259
There's always the classics in the Gradius, R Type and Darius series. In particular I heavily recommend Darius Gaiden, since it gives you many paths to choose from, keeping the game feeling fresh even after spending a long time with it.

Since you're starting out I feel I should point out that you WILL be spending a long time with one game before you can clear it. I started out with a relative easy series (Touhou on normal difficulty) and it still took me several weeks of playing before I could clear with no continues. If you're just looking for something to chill, though, don't worry about it and just have fun. Be sure to post your progress!

I guess I did a write-up anyway.

>I don't think Strikers '45 has a rank system beyond increasing difficulty as you go, I think it was just an accidental thing. I just never would have thought it was actually a feature of the game.

It has a very visible rank system but the technique of purposely powering down in the second loop is a really bad idea as you tend to always benefit more from having power. Strikers 1945 2 players use the power down strat a lot more probably because the suicide bullets aren't the horribly evil randomized butt fuckers that 45s are.

I have a few noob questions if anybody wouldn't mind helping

Whats the difference between Normal and "Arrange"?
Why does Mushihimesama have four attack buttons?
Whereabouts on the screen should I focus when playing?
>>
>>136755861
>Whats the difference between Normal and "Arrange"?

Normal is the original arcade game. Arrange is a console exclusive version based on Maniac Mode from the arcade game with some differences.

>Why does Mushihimesama have four attack buttons?

There are 5 buttons in the port (6 for arrange).

Shot (holding it down concentrates your fire and makes you move slower, tapping it allows you to move at normal speed while firing)

Bomb (clears all bullets onscreen and deals damage within a limited range)

Full Auto (same effect as tapping Shot)

Rapid Shot (same effect as full auto but external to the original arcade controls. There's a bug in the game where holding full auto while rapidly tapping shot causes you to do more damage. Holding Full Auto and Rapid Shot achieves the same effect without having to manually tap)

Rapid Full Auto (rapid taps the full auto button. This causes your lasers to be inactive while your main shot fires. Its use is mainly limited to advanced scoring tricks)

The extra button in Arrange mode allows you to cycle between the 3 different shot types in the game.

>Whereabouts on the screen should I focus when playing?

Two main factors play into your ideal range of vision. Bullet speed and bullet density.
As a general rule of thumb, the faster the bullets, the wider your range of vision should be so you can anticipate incoming threats.
At high bullet densities you should focus closer to your ship in order to make the small, precise movements required. The nighmare scenario is very fast, very dense bullets that require you to do both at the same time.
>>
>>136757272
So is Arrange harder or easier than Normal?

Also, is there basically any reason to not use Rapid Shot/Rapid Full Auto? Seems like I should just hold down RB and focus on dodging.
>>
>>136759306
High Scores are separated by arcade and most other communities into autofire on and autofire off. The Maniac mode auto world record is about twice as high as the non-auto record.

Arrange is easier than Normal Maniac and Normal Ultra

>>

Metal Slug Scoring just consists of completely boring knifing the whole time, which is simple as fuck, since all you have to do is spamming the knife on the edge of the screen while dodging an attack every 3 minutes. No wonder people rather do speedruns than scoring runs in these games.

>>
>>136802560
>I see, turns out I had auto fire on the whole time.
This is why you need a toggle autofire button. I just finished sessioning the game myself, got a 2-5 pb which is nice but anyways i use autofire+toggle in first loop and revert to no autofire and tapping in the second just because it's really important to not make any split second errors getting the special out.
>>
>>136801676
Play Black Label maniac, then they'll have earned an apology letter.
>>
>>136802560
>>136803075
You can also set up an autofire key and a second non-autofire key for CAVE-style 3-button controls. To do this in shmupmame, use the custom button function like so:

1) Bind "P1 Custom 1" to a key.
2) Go to "Custom Buttons" in the menu, hover over P1 Custom 1, and press "1" (the numeral) to make set it to button 1, resulting in a red "1" showing up after it.
3) Set autofire to either Button 1 or Custom 1 in the autofire settings, and set no autofire for the other; now you have autofire shot on one button and shot on the other overriding autofire when both are held
>>
>>136805029

Is anyone able to give me some advice about ship selection in Crimzon Clover?

I'm relatively new to shmups and it seems information on stuff like this is really scarce.

Specifically, obviously some ships are going to be better than others but to a beginner the advantages and disadvantages aren't really obvious.

In this case I liked Type 2 because of how spread out shots were, but was later told by someone more experienced than me Type 2 is shit and you should use Type 1, but I really don't get why.

Similar deal when I messed around with Dodonpatchi, I liked C-L but apparently it's garbage and anyone with a brain would use C-S and again I cannot find any information to as why

Until you unlock the Type Z, the Type I is probably the best ship. Quick lock on so you'll be able to boost more, not too fast so you won't ram into enemies/bullets, and a wide shot that gets wider when you boost.

For DoDonPachi, C-S is the better option because the C ship has the widest range, and as S you not only have stronger shot in general, but shot doesn't drop in power as much when you die.

>Similar deal when I messed around with Dodonpatchi, I liked C-L but apparently it's garbage and anyone with a brain would use C-S and again I cannot find any information to as why
Type C's perk is its wide shot, so it's kind of a waste to pick the ship if you're going to focus on the laser. You're better off with A or B if you want to play laser, it does more damage (I'm pretty sure) and gives you better mobility to make use of it.

C-S is also just the best ship for survival, you can basically hold the C button everywhere but bosses to autokill everything and just focus on stream dodging.

Don't let those bullets hit you!

This. There's literally no excuse for you not to get it. It's very good aswell, I highly reccomend it.
>>

Getting a 2-ALL is easily one of the most satisfying feelings ever. To the point where I don't even care if I don't 1CC the game because of the second loop.

Which Psikyo you playing?
>>

Been playing some Strikers 1945. It's almost impossible to react sometimes, especially in the second loop the bullets just go crazy.
>>
>>137007350
If you're planning to go for a 2-all in a Psikyo game you should be learning to play by memory rather than reaction, anon.
>>
>>137007350
You're not supposed to react to them, you're supposed to autistically memorize sequences of movements so that the bullets all go around you.

I know, I'm jus saying that they fly pretty fast.

Score Items. They're affected by your multiplier and each time you collect one they go up in value. There's 10 in all.
>>

>Been playing some Strikers 1945. It's almost impossible to react sometimes, especially in the second loop the bullets just go crazy.
First of all make a save state so you can practice the 2nd loop trust me you'll need to and it takes 10 times longer to learn than the first, 2nd thing learn when you stop firing and good charge use or you will fuck yourself with suicide bullets.

>>137007560
>If you're planning to go for a 2-all in a Psikyo game you should be learning to play by memory rather than reaction, anon.
Strikers 1945 is kinda the exception in psikyos library as if you play by strict memory you will get raped in the loop as the suicide bullets are completely random as are the timings of the popcorn waves in relation to bosses, really forces you to be intuitive and read on the spot aside of the occasional completely bullshit troll situation.

I didn't know until the matmouse stream that you couldn't even use continues to get some practice in. That's kind of a dick move.

Played Deathsmiles 11 hours and only just realised there's another level you can select instead of the castle

That's nowhere near as bad as DOJWL and its Hibachi, where the entire second loop has continues disabled on top of taking away all your extends.

Hiscore. dat is kinda crap though, as it saves the scores for replays again, ie if you wanna watch a replay of your 1cc it will save the score a second time, a third time, and so on.

>>137044351
Congrats dude! How long did it take you?
What are you planning now that you've passed that milestone?
>>
>>137045587
Really 1CCing maniac mode only took me a couple weeks of practice. But honestly my biggest milestone in this game is to...well, beat Spiritual Larsa.
>>
>>137044695
>>137044898
Wait, NVM. I think I confounded maniac with ultra. Nonetheless, still pretty difficult clear.
>>
>>137046096
Plus I'm playing through black label. Ultra Mode got replaced with God Mode. And I am nowhere near ready for God Mode.
>>
>>137046412
I don't know about that. If I recall correctly, some of the top players think God is easier than Ultra, if only for the slowdown.
>>
>>137044695
>but I think Futari Maniac is actually one of the hardest clears you can get.
Nah for survival all the black label modes are much easier than the original 1.5 modes.

Only one I can think of is Jets n' Guns.

Also there's Final Boss: Raw Label where you can choose between two abilities at the end of each stage that vastly impact how you play as, but I dont know if you want to count that.

On more thought: add insomnia and Touhou-related nightmares to that. I had to suffer through an excruciating dream last night where I dreamed that I was Reisen and Eirin restrained me to a table and performed inhumane experiments on me, while the rest of Eientei made appearances to laugh at me. It's one of the 2 or 3 Touhou dreams I've ever had and it was easily the shittiest in a very long while. I guess the universe is telling me that I need to go back to playing for score ASAP because doing it is not as masochistic as not doing it.
