Might be it, although they're allied and they seem to know to return to the carrier group to land, unless the carrier group is just not responding to their requests which is why they continually circle.

I'll try in a second once I've got this ambush set up.

There's market for everything as long as it's F2P with plebthunder's business model. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole but at least it'd be a better gateway into contemporary combat flight sims than console trash.

>>136546214
Yea and those were all separate simulations until 2010. The DCS Series was started with the ka-50.
>>
>>136546437
You're arguing a retarded semantical difference between what separates DCS, especially DCS in its original form, which was not the platform it is today, from LOMAC and its Flaming Cliffs expansion.

Every other anon in this thread is telling you that there was very little technical difference between Flaming Cliffs and OG DCS, and DCS was mainly the rebranding of the series, starting with the Ka-50. They had so much in common that you could play multiplayer Flaming Cliffs with player flown Ka-50s in the same mission despite being "separate" games.

The original statement was "DCS started as basically FC3." This is a reference to how DCS has visibly and technically evolved from LOMAC to FC to DCS with slight improvements over time into what DCS is today.

Fuck you for getting me riled up enough to write all that out.

There is no Half Life 3. People need to let go.

I can't get hyped for things that I might not see in my lifetime anymore so F-5E is the only thing I'm really hyped for right now because it'll probably come out by next year.

I'm interested in the Viggen because I'm curious to see how an Ikea jet works. There's never been a Swedish fighter simulated to the depth of DCS, so it'll be interesting to see how the Swedish approach design and cockpit ergonomics. Unfortunately the Viggen we're getting is just a ground pounder variant, so my excitement is very tempered by that. At the very least,it'll be the first ground pounder in DCS that can fly fast, and I'm a big fan of the MiG-21, so I'll probably be checking it out.

As for the rest:

>Hornet and Tomcat
Too far away to get excited about, but I look forward to DCS having a true and modern multi-role fighter in 7 years.

>Paying for carriers
I'm worried about the implications this might have on mission design and multiplayer. I need to know more info, but I have on interest in buying these either way.

>Sand and Sand Redux
Sand redux at least offers more interesting scenarios than muh Red Flag, but I still worry that nobody will play any of the non-stock maps because they're not cheap.

>Gazelle and Cobra
Helicopters are too slow for me and I don't recall a Cobra ever even being confirmed or announced. It's a wishlist item at best from what I've heard.

I know you guys don't like Arma 3 but just in case:

I made a PvP mission scenario at 5km altitude with custom loadout vanilla Neophron jets (the super fast ones that max out at 900kph). Is anyone interested in dogfighting in that scenario?

Ops were fun but I'm worn out for now.

I've got an idea for an op that someone should make: Anti-Pirate Ops. Basically an army of Somalians is coming to git the wite wimminz of Georgia and you have to sink all of their ships and/or destroy all of their transports before they reach some city and rape your GF. Perhaps they have commandeered a single large ship in addition to the landing craft, to give you a proper AA worry.

You mustve obliterated that plane
larger craft has terrible explosion models ,but smaller fighters tend to burn for a bit until exploding. Either way I do not mind the damage models at all .
For example , here I got hit by friendly aim9 and i lost a bit of avionics+mfd . I powered down and after 8 secounds my engine exploded (complete loss of power) And i was not hit by anything else .

Okay so about that Op Blue Flag style campaign for the Strait of Hormuz map. I've been kicking some more ideas around on how to balance it.

>BlueFor

M-2000C (UAE) x8
F-5E (Bahrain, Yemen) xUnlimited
MiG-21Bis (Yemen) xUnlimited
Hawk T1.A (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman)
Gazelle SA 342 (Kuwait) xUnlimited
Mi-8 Hip (Yemen) xUnlimited
UH-1 (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, UAE, Bahrain, Oman) xUnlimited

-Additional AI Aircraft-
F-16C
Tornado IDS
Su-22

>RedFor

-Player-
F-14B (Iran) x12
MiG-29S (Iran, Syria) x12
M-2000C (Syria) x8
F-5E (Iran) xUnlimited
MiG-21Bis (Syria) xUnlimited
Su-25 (Iran, Syria) xUnlimited
Su-25T (Iran, Syria) xUnlimited
L-39ZA (Syria) xUnlimited
Gazelle SA 342 (Syria, Lebanon) xUnlimited
Mi-8 Hip (Iran, Syria) xUnlimited
UH-1 (Iran, Lebanon) xUnlimited

-Additional AI Aircraft-

Su-22

To help balance the advantage that the F/A-18C gives BlueFor, I've given RedFor an M-2000C, and RedFor would also receive a more complex and bigger SAM network to keep the Hornets tied up.

That's why I've given RedFor a shitload of F-14s and MiG-29s. Slot numbers for the F-18s could be adjusted if needed. If I gave RedFor Su-27s, would that make them too OP? I figured the F-14s would be more than a match for the F-15s.

I would probably ask the Blue Flag guys for guidance on how exactly to set the mission up and how much AI presence there should be.

I really dig the idea of a persistent Blue Flag campaign that isnt either NATO vs Russia or each side gets everything.
>>
>>136610425

Do you have any experience at all with the DCS mission maker? Making something like Blue Flag won't be easy.
>>
>>136612081
I can learn. Begging someone else to make it for me won't get me anywhere, though I fully intend to ask the Blue Flag guys for advice. Something like this is at LEAST a year out anyways, plenty of time to pick apart the Black Sea Blue Flag mission and see how they did it.

>>136608490
If Avio are working on a Mirage F1, I might swap the Syrian M-2000C out for an Iranian F1. As I understand it, the F1 is a better attack aircraft, which I think would help balance RedFor a bit better.

This.

Mission scripting is not easy. There is next to no documentation for doing what in your head sounds trivial. The only reason I've been able to handle mission scripting is because I already know how to program and I had a ton of help from the hoggit IRC. There's a few guys who hang out in there know that know their shit and one of those guys is the guy that wrote MIST.
>>
>>136612798

According to CMANO's database, the avionics of the Mirage F.1EE (the one we're getting) is almost identical to that of the F.1EQ (the one that Iran has).

In any case the DCS F.1 will be a better fit for Iran than the M2000.

In that case I'll lean on others' knowledge (hoggit, buddy spike forums) as best I can. I've worked on the Dodge Viper GT3-R and Bentley Continental GT3 physics for Assetto Corsa and managed to stick with those projects, I think I can stick with this.

For mouse flying you only really have warthunder and IL2:BOS. Trouble is that mouse flying and good flight models don't mix, hence why using the mouse in BOS is so hard. You really need a cheapo joystick to get into anything more realistic than warthunder like DCS, FSX, BMS, IL2, etc

The modded content (and the a-10) where you can twist and turn really fast on a time and pull 12g effortlessly handle like hot garbage... but the vanilla jets (neophron and buzzard) actually handle properly enough to feel like the real thing imo. So just give them custom loadouts and it can be fun.

No they fucking do not. The A3 flight model is so bad that the lift force is fixed perpendicular to the horizon and if you put the aircraft in a bank you just continue on your original vector...

Even A2 had better flight models.

I'm convinced the ATC AI in FSX is programmed to fuck up every now and again. I just had it line me up for final on Runway 02 while it lined up another plane for 20, had us make our final approaches at nearly identical times, and gave me a rear-right quartering crosswind, leaving me on a runway excursion about 30 feet away from the end of it, and I listened to it like a fucking lemming

I only tried a few fixed wings in Arma and most of them felt like total garbage.

>can pretty much turn as hard as you can pull the stick
>no damage models except for fine/smoking/exploded
>stall behaviour is ... hilarious
>no modeled systems
>...

Rotary wings (in the advanced flight model) are slightly better though, I admit. They still feel somewhat off, especially since throttle/collective is the same thing and is really awkward, but at least there are things like ground effect/retreating blade stall and downwash that make things challenging.

It's pretty hilarious if you have the advanced flight model enabled and someone else from the server gets in and tries to fly away. They usually crash withing seconds.

>>136654074
I found it hilarious that the coaxial Havoc bastard thing, flies exactly like helicopters with a anit-torque rotor.

Though interestingly i fly better with the advanced one, than the standard one, still i'm pretty much garbage at flying in arma, and i suspect it mosty has to do with how arma handles analog input, where it isn't the pure input like in any sim, but it emulates key presses, and quite frankly it's disgusting.

Which trainer in DCS does /Simg recommend?

none, seriously get a real plane

Although maybe the L-39 is somewhat okay.
>>
>>136686329
Lad, if I weren't stingier than a jew and I had money to throw away I would rather spend it on flight lessons. And I think that's a given for everyone in this thread.
>>
>>136703129
A simpit is cheaper than lessons that would lead to anything worth while though. Sure, your first discovery flight is fun but it wears off. And actually getting to a point where you can make money is going to cost you 10x more than a simpit.

With that being said, I'm doing both. Simpits aren't even that expensive, maybe $2k for a good setup.
>>
>>136702772
How about what would /Simg recommend getting for DCS?
>>
>>136703527

That's extremely short termed thinking, and a simpit wouldn't increase my enjoyment of sims in the slightest.

Pilots get treat like shit in the US. I hear it's better in europe.

Becoming a civilian pilot in the US is seriously not worth it, unless money is of no concern to you.
>>
>>136705395
They get treated better in europe because there are no planes, and there are shit militaries so not a lot of pilots and most pilots are ex-military.
I doubt pilots get treated better in Russia then eastern europe for example.
>>
>>136705679
So are you saying the surplus ex mil pilots in the US are the reason why young pilots get treated like shit?
>>
>>136706105
No, the ex-military is true for europe, no idea about the US, but there aren't a lot of planes in europe, and not a lot of pilots as a result, also with the standard of living being lower, it results in less pilots.

Really depends on what you want to fly. The Su-25T is free, so maybe play around with that for a while until you know what you want.

Most modules are fine, except:

Hawk, because VEAO
WW2 stuff, because it doesn't fit into DCS right now the modules itself are fine though
FC3 shit, unless you can live with non clickable cockpits and odd flight models.
F-86 is another oddjob and not very useful.
>>
>>136707332
>odd flight models.
pls.

FC3 is great bang for the buck no matter what your opinion is, and the outdated flight models, which are on par with BMS are getting updated anyway.

>>
>>136708625
Friendly reminder that FC3 is an absolute necessity if you plan on doing any kind of air to air combat online.

F-5E can't come soon enough. Then we can finally have one underpopulated server with full DCS module fighter jets.
>>
>>136708852

>>
>>136704665
Flight training is expensive, though most Part 141 courses out there are about $70-80k, not almost twice that.

Semi-related note, if you're military the GI Bill covers that if you have access to it, and if the military sees you using it to get flight training you might get picked up for flight school, which is probably the ultimate way to earn your wings.
>>
>>136709621
>>136709621
It's kind of stupid getting flight experience to become a flight officer in the mil. They value a 4.0 more than however many hours you might have.

Also, that is still insanely expensive.

The best way to become a pilot is through NROTC/AFROTC.
>>
>>136709615
When it came out the Mirage was very broken, the mIg-21 dicked on it at first.

Those wages aren't just at JetBlue, that's pretty standard for a lot of regional airlines, and it's a big part of why there's a legitimate pilot shortage. The big airlines will pay their PICs six figures, there's no lack of talent chomping at the bit to go there. The low-cost motherfuckers like JetBlue think they can short their pilots cash and expect to attract new aviators, while low-hour pilots can get certs to crop-dust or look to get into military flying to build that time up, and then go off to be a first officer for $75k a year, and everyone starts acting shocked and writing articles about how there's not enough pilots to fly the planes

I'm guessing if your instruments are fucked and you don't want to just eyeball your landing then the lead ship flies the proper glideslope so you can follow, then at the last second the lead pulls away to let you land. What does that have to do with props vs jets?

Prop plane engines could spew oil & smoke (also reason why F4U was initially DQed from carriers) on to (mostly the front) windscreen and effectively blind the front view.

Hell, I have a hard time taking down a Mig 15 with the DCS .50s, (you just have to keep pounding the tailpipe until the wings pop off) and I don't even bother with its Gen-1 Sidewinders against fighters, the damage model is frequently fucked

I don't know what that dude was talking about, but no. Helicopters can't maintain inverted flights.

Military and a very select few civilian choppers are able to roll and loop because they have specific blades that won't bend too much and break/hit them selves, but none can remain inverted.

Only small electric R/C helicopters can

The crappy Sidewinders on the Sabre actually played a huge part in saving Taiwan from a PRC invasion back in 1958; they were outclassed by the mainlanders' Mig 17s, but the commie pilots weren't prepared for the missiles, and maintained their formations until they got into gun range, giving the Taiwanese pilots easy targets, crappy tracking on the missiles notwithstanding

>Also, under a secret effort called "Operation Black Magic", the U.S. Navy modified some of the F-86 Sabre fighter planes of the ROC Air Force with its newly developed AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles (early models). These missiles gave the Nationalist Chinese pilots a decisive edge over the Soviet-made MiG-15 and MiG-17 fighters (flown by the PRC) in the skies over the Matsu Islands and the Taiwan Strait. The ROC pilots used these Sidewinder missiles to gain air superiority over the PRC pilots

Major Kong's B-52 spawns with 40% health at really low alt in the Caucasus after you kill the main flight of bombers, and because he's flying so low, EWR can't pick him up until he's like 10km~ from his target.

New BMS campaign announcement!
Ops theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4sqMNHZxjI

Welcome to Operation Deliberate Force.
Coming around April 12, we will visit the Balkans to remove kebab (removers) during the Bosnian war, 1995 by bombing them to smithereens. It's not gonna be quite realistic, since Serbia will actually have an air force we will contend with, but it would be boring without it.

We will be flying F16CM Block 50 out of Ljubljana Airport, Slovenia. To make it more fun and a bit more autistic, we will be using only weapons that were in service in 1995 - this means no JDAM/JSOW/SDB, no AIM9X, no AIM120C.

The enemy will field:
MiG29A
MiG21MF
MiG21bis
G4 - Yugoslavian trainer(lol)/ground attack aircraft
J22 - Yugoslavian ground attack aircraft

Get the Balkans theatre here: http://www.bmsforum.org/forum/showthread.php?23469-Balkans-Theater-of-Operation-for-BMS-4-33

We will be using 4.33 throughout the campaign. I'll consider if we will be switching to 4.33.1 if it releases in the meantime.

tldr bms ops from around april 12

>Doesn't the script from Dr. Strangelove say they were instructed to fly low below the radar?

I don't remember for sure but I can check. Besides, the most fun part of the mission is zooming in those B-52s while going at Mach 2+ contrailing like there's no tomorrow. But if need be I can change a few things of the mission here and there, it is a WIP after all.

Anyone else conned into buying the Hawk last year?

Am I missing something or is it still completely broken? Can trim up and left, but not down and right (and the trim seems to max out in a single click rather than being incremental). Rockets can't be deployed in the RP (rocket pod, I assume) mode, needs to be in the B (Bomb) mode. Rocket pods also only fire in semi-auto mode, at 1 rocket a second.

Tell me about it.

I still don't know if we're getting the non-arcade flight model, and I know we aren't getting rear seat functionality. It's been 2+ years and we still don't have a lock on tone, and the one we're getting next patch doesn't even work correctly (low grumble isn't replaced by the high tone, it continues to play after locking)

Wish I invested in the L-39 or even that Spanish literal who trainer or wait for the based Tucano. At least they fucking work.

Also waiting for a non-shit Steam sale for DCS because I don't want to download their standalone client and have to manually update it all the time.

Got £15 from refunding Firewatch (after completing it )))) ) and £35 from selling trading cards that I still need to spend, and they refuse to have sales on Steam that are more than 15% off 6 year old modules.

Has there been any update on 2.0 (or is it 2.5 now?) being released and giving us the ability to use more than one map on a single client? I'm hoping there's some functionality with modding where you can load up things like the Vietnam map pack as a seperate map rather than installing it over the Caucas one like you have to now.

Third party maps fucking when.

>>136811250
It is a neat aircraft, the developers are just hack frauds that want locking up.
>>
>>136811674
It checks for updates automatically. I like steam and all but there's literally no reason not to use the standalone version of DCS. You can even launch the standalone game through steam if you still want to have your ingame overlay and stuff.

>>136811876
Don't you still need to launch the client in order for it to check for updates (like you do with every free2play game on Steam, which is why they're also a fucking joke and nigh unplayable. Play another game for a couple of days and you need to sit through a 2 hour install because steam doesn't update them)?

That's pretty much the only reason why I haven't swapped over.
>>
>>136812131
No? DCS has been a single unified executable since 1.5 came out. The updater runs when you launch the game to check for updates but it's quick and then the game launches.

I guess if you really don't want to wait a couple of minutes to download when there's a new update then you should stick to steam but I don't think it's a big deal. With the standalone game you can choose to install whatever branch of 1.5 or 2.0 you want and you can buy any module including beta modules like the Mirage and you can use your Steam keys and the sales have been happening pretty regularly, so I don't see why not.

don't forget fucking trainers
>>
>>136824537

I'm not saying the WWII and Korean War modules aren't great, but they're competing against other sims and lack actual theaters for them to fight in.

The DCS unit set is ideal for cold war and modern combat- a setting without much competition from other sims, but only like half of the modules are able to take advantage of it.
>>
>>136825914
I'm saying they aren't great.

P-51D is still unplayable however many years later because there still isn't a WW2 theatre to play in, with era-specific AAA and targets.

Instead we've got to settle for strafing Zsu-23s and BMPs.
>>
>>136825734

I give trainers a pass because they serve as good ways for devs to practice making DCS modules before jumping into the more complicated stuff. Just think what Veao would be putting out if they didn't get a chance to learn from their mistakes with the Hawk.

But Leatherneck did it best by choosing an older, but still relevant fighter.

6 years. They said a long time ago that they think they could do one fairly easily, but it was going to be after the 3 planes they were working on. Back then nothing was known or announced, but we now know them to be the Viggen, Corsair, and Tomcat.

So, sometime after the F-14, if they do one at all, is the most accurate answer right now.

Okay your constant posting about the mod has gotten me interested.

So I know I can't expect anything beyond the most basic flight models and no new cockpits, but how are the weapons/avionics systems represented?

How do air ground missiles work for Russian airplanes? Do you just use the Su-27 HDD with a maverick seeker? And what about the Mig-31 radar? Did you just use a super buffed Su-27 radar?
>>
>>136841627
You pretty much answered all your questions there.

Most if not all planes use the Su-27 cockpit, with the ground attack variants using the HDD as a Shkval type thing for the guided munitions.

Depends on if you have any other modules to buy.

If you have everything you want already then sure go ahead, its a fantastic, well detailed map. Be aware it still needs some work though, like bugs and has more airports to be added.

It's been on ED's backburners for around ~4 years and it really shows. The detail is fantastic.

But frankly if you're on the fence about it just wait it out a bit longer. 1.5 and 2.0 are supposed to merge sometime in the near future supposedly.

Which of them? LEt me remind you that the WW2 shit that ED released so far (and will release in the future) isn't featured in any sim that is relevant in this astronomical age/worth half a shit/deserves to be called a sim, and that applies to Korea as well.
>>
>>136868913
Oh and it seems that they'll be sticking with that motif at least for a few years. They said they won't make an F-16 module because of BMS, we can safely assume we won't see shit from theaters featured in CloD/BoS for at least respectively 5 years and a decade, unless some third party decides to do that.
