Guys, I'm really having problems. I'm on my 120th campaign and I can't get past the first blacksite, mission-wise. The furthest I've gotten is predator armor / magnet weaponry, I wipe soon after I get one of them and the other is on the way. So I restart. I'm playing on Commander and even tried going back to veteran, and while the earlygame was insultingly easy I still managed to wipe at the same exact stage of the game ( advent mecs / stun lancers / sometimes I see a muton. ) Then it's just over. I lose all of my promoted units and have to continue with 5 rookies ( i usually rush for the squad size upgrade, doesn't take too much time away from other upgrades because you at least need alloys to buy them )

you can recover but you need to essentially mainline your best troops all the time until they're all max rank. you can cheese a lot of encounters with grenadiers and specialists config'd for overwatch camping. gunslinger is also quite good without any real gear.

Let me put it this way. When you play Uncharted or Bioshock or GTA or Skyrim or The Witcher, etc, failure is only ever a temporary setback. If you die, you respawn somewhere or reload your latest save, because it's the only way to proceed from failure.

XCOM, meanwhile, makes failure a part of itself. You can lose the entire game. It's like if Mass Effect made it possible for the player to fuck up half-way through the story and have the Reapers rape the galaxy to death. There is a tension and excitement that can only come from the very real awareness that you can lose at any time. Every failure has a consequence. Sure, this means that sometimes the game is cruel and unreasonable and fickle, but it hurts us because it loves us.

What cover does it take into account, when? How much does the enemy dashing help them?

it doesnt, i hit a muton running out of cover with overwatch right after i ended my turn after seeing the shot against him was 27% in full cover, so 37 to hit after he left it or zero if it kept the cover bonus active.

i'm not sure if covering fire takes into account the enemy cover though, if they're acting and not moving. i'd have to test it but i'm honestly not sure how.
