I have a couple characters on my account. One of those is a lvl 40 Sunbreaker Titan with 259 light level. I am struggling to bring the light level up. I mostly play solo because I haven't found a decent group of players (I'm italian and 35 years old, and around here most of the players are the usual hardcore youngsters or dumb kids who play like 10 hours a day).

Do I have to keep grinding endlessly to gain few points of light every day? I'd like to have a bunch of people to play with so I could try Nightfalls, strikes, Raids and the other challenges in the game that you need a party to.

Strikes and Court of Oryx is what you should be doing. Always equip your highest stuff so even higher light stuff will drop. Also do things that give legendary marks (dailies) so you can just buy legendaries at 280.

First curse is the only hand cannon I can use in pvp, so much fun to do 93 damage a head shot to some scrub.

I use it in pve too, first curse and triple tap are pretty good perks for running through strikes.

Depends. For general PvP most people bitch about Titan Sunbreakers and Warlock Stormcallers for their strong and mobile multikill capable super abilities. Hunters had Bladedancers dominating for similar reasons during year 1.

For sweaty Trials of Osiris matches most "pro gamers" complain about Warlock Sunsingers for their self-revive super, overshield-granting melee, and versatile damage over time firebolt grenades.

For PvE Hunters tended to struggle a bit until Nightstalker came around. Generally no one cares what class in PvE you are until raids and Nightfalls when group leaders will demand a Defender Titan.

Honestly it doesn't matter, people will call you shitter regardless if you beat them or lose to them.
