When I switch characters, I only get access to whatever companions said character has. I assumed since you ''lose'' your companions you might not keep them if they weren't placed somewhere.

So, been playing swtor mostly like a single player game. Practically never grouped for anything.

Now that I've got a few characters at max level and with maxed crew skills, I'm looking at hardmode flashpoints. I can get some gear from common crystals vendor and/or crafting (which seems to be enough for HM FP -do correct if wrong), but is there something else I should do or know?
Do mechanics change from the solo mode to the group one? If not, I assume doing a solo run should be enough to know what to do.

I mainly dislike fucking things up and being the ignorant one, so I haven't thrown myself blindly into it yet.

Tactical flashpoints have different mechanics from solo for a lot of fight, so I'd recommend doing those.

HM Flashpoints (which also change slightly in mechanics) I would skip entirely. They're harder than story mode ops, and don't drop especially good gear.

The first one of those was suffering and rage inducing and I wiped 3 times at the final console before the Exarch showdown, but it's not so bad now that I've gotten the hang of efficiently rotating between the elite robots, the twink robots, zapping the boss, and killing sky trooper spawns.

I'm an operative though so I can stealth past most shit, slice droids, dodge roll burst damage and flashbang skytrooper spawns. I guess it would be pretty frustrating for some of the other classes.
