I play a lot of Xerath and used to play a lot of Karthus.

Xerath is absurd in mid since he's got ridiculously safe farm and can his passive keeps him from running out of mana. In teamfights 2/3 of his abilities are AoE and do a crazy amount of damage. Provided you have a front line you just get long range AoE poke and take them down.

Karthus has a somewhat harder laning phase since the majority of his skills don't do shit in terms of harass or burst damage. You make up for it (a little) by getting free assists with your ult but against a non-melee burst champion you are going to get raped (Annie, Xerath, Malz, etc). Your E actually makes melee mid matchups like Zed and Yasuo not too bad.

In mid-lategame you just press E, walk through a minion wave and collect your gold. In teamfights you initiate/disengage with your wall and then just stand in the middle of the fight with your E on. Even if you die it stays up for 8 seconds which should be more than enough for your team to clean up.

Everyone thinks that Karthus' strength is his ult but it's really his entire kit that's strong.
