Knights of the Round Table Edition

Previous Pantokrator: >>135568416

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

First for you forgot to change the edition in the OP.

Also, the debug mod link in the OP needs to be changed.

Has the debug mod been rehosted somewhere yet? I never actually grabbed it while Desura was up.

Can you people read before posting?>explaining why those goals are your goals
I've said this twice and yet you persist on ignoring it. Explaining those goals means explaining what spells you're aiming to get from those goals, why you are aiming for those specific spells, what paths your national mages have, using boosters etc. etc.
Secondly, I was using a singular example (writing about research vs talking about it in a video), which you would know if you would actually read the conversation instead of just sperging. And lastly, obviously there is a thought process behind different strategies and that is exactly why I fucking said that you require those nation specific informations to be able to come up with those counters and recognizing what those will be, instead of just generalizing everything.

>>135834214
Hang on, I'll make a dropbox folder. I'll throw inside the Tiny test map too.
>>
>>135834256
I think the bigger issue here is that it's going to take a lot of effort for someone to record multiple games at once (since nobody has a 100% win rate over multiple PBEM's), explaining their thinking behind each turn and then actually winning a game.
>>
>>135834424

Generally what people do is keep turns and then do an AAR of a game they won.

>>135834256

Calm down, use your sentences. Explain things in order.

TheNewCool admin, are you here? I'm the guy who wanted to sub R'lyeh.
>>
>>135836503

First time I played this game was a hotseat on a laptop that just kept going while other stuff happened.

Don't really recall playing SP at all. And as everyone knows, i'm now the toppest dominoes player in the world, so.
>>
>>135836503
I think I might have spent a hundred hours. It was a bad idea. I didn't learn to use magic, and instead just spammed Tomb Kings and soulless hordes.

Start MP as soon as possible.
>>
VegetableWarriors5 when?
>>
>>135836503
I blundered through a little bit of SP and some MP against the friend who bought me the game before joining a pbem. In between all this I browsed through the in-game information on units and spells and a few online guides. As I started playing I looked through guides and the inspector more. Just trying to absorb concepts and information, mostly. Actually playing my first MP games was massively, incredibly more beneficial to learning the game than anything else could possibly be.
>>
>>135836689
I'm in 10 games right now. Why do you want me to join more?

Why am I sending in a pretender?

Someone please save me from the nothing I've become.

>>135836796
>>135836631

Groovy. As soon as the game goes on sale again I'll grab a legit copy and look for a pbem to join. Thanks, anons
>>
>>135837195
Remember to rename your turn file!
>>
Can you update to a newer version of a mod in an ongoing game?
>>
>>135837195

Joining games with 'ea', 'la', 'ma', or 'meme' in the title seems like a bad idea.

>>135837301

By the time the game next goes on sale, likely the blitzserver will be up and running.
>>
>>135836503
Something like 40 hours, but my first mp games were with friends who had played the game about as much as me. Perhaps around 100 hours SP before playing on llama. I somewhat agree with the others that going MP once you learn how the game works is a pretty good idea, if you plan on playing with people who know the game well you should watch/read the basics on scripting, communions and strengths/weaknesses of the nations (at least in the game you're going in) so you have a rough idea on what you want to do against different enemies, and maybe test different stuff on debug mod.
>>
>>135837195
Anon, as the person in 23 games, don't do this to yourself.
>>
Holy fuck Shinuyama.
>>
Reminder for EdibleGloves Pythium to please play your turns m8
>>
>>135837626

Big thing is watching battles. If you can't work out what the enemy is doing and why it is working, you're never going to get better at the game. And the more extreme (in any respect, extremely magey, extremely weak, extremely strong) the nations you play the faster you'll learn.
>>
Is this game posted anywhere? does someone know the admin?
>>
Convinced Eriu to come back and set herself to AI, so it's just Agartha now.
>>
>>135837917
I kind of take it as a given to watch every battle no matter how well it went (also because it's fun to watch big fights), so didn't even think to mention it.
>>
>>135837838
He doesn't even have an excuse.
>>
>>135837601
That sounds dope, but I think I'll have to stick with pbem until I've got a better grasp on the game. Having the extra time to think things out and look stuff up makes MP sound less overwhelming
>>
>Humans gradually replace more powerful races as time goes on through interbreeding or conquest.
Why are humans in this game equivalent to fantasy orcs
>>
>>135837601

why's that?
>>
>>135838303
I think you greatly misunderstand the role humans play in every other fantasy series.

We are the orcs, anon. We always have been.
>>
>>135838303
Can't think of many fantasy worlds where orcs replace everything beyond Middle-Earth

>does anyone know how the warden bonding mechanic work in summod?
If you're using summod .52 or earlier, it's a ritual spell that allows the witch to summon a warden for each battle. It also has a small chance of boosting paths over time, selected from w/e/f/a, up to level 1 in that path, and no more than two boosts total. However, this was in practice clunky and difficult to work after a few blitzes, and the boost mechanic was redundant with some other changes, so in 0.53 I just changed it to an event.

>Also the round table stuff what does that do?
When a Knight Commander or Knight of Avalon becomes sufficiently experienced, they become a Knight of Earth* (* was round table, right now it's earth to make it less blatant. If I can convince Ohlmann to work with me, they might get integrated into the Knights of Stone). In addition, a commander who is a member of that knightly order can get promoted if at least one of 12 seats is open, which gives him a nifty new shield, another stat bonus and a magic item.

Weren't the other games in this series extremely poorly admined?

>>
>>135840770
That's a singleplayer problem right there.
Have you played 6 months yet?
>>
>>135840770
Do you have the Light infantry set to fire closest? What era are you playing? Why do you have no magic to back you up?
>>
>>135840770
The slave warrior/elite warrior are generally better for expansion. If you just position them correctly you should take most non cavalry/crossbow indie provinces with minimal losses.

Light infantries are a terrible arrow bait if they're not massed. Also post deployment.

>>
>>135841394
Mage support for expansion? As c'tis?
>>
>>135840770
As mentioned, in EA and MA there are better troops. In LA, the problem is mainly that you're simply outnumbered, and it seems like the scripting gave them a fair bit of archer fire as well as first hit. C'tis is a nation of herbivorous lizards, so you rout quite easily.

I made a horrible scripting mistake; I set all on hold all and fire in hopes they'd be worn down by the Lizard Lord's smite but I completely overlooked the fact that they have archers and troops with javelins.

I've filled this turn with chariots and slave warriors, thank you.

I was hoping they would hit the City Guards, which is why I put them in the front line. Thanks.

Yeah, I noticed even that lame Witch Doctor did its job with the Vine Arrows. I underestimated mages, I'll bring some support. I heard a lot of good things about the chariots, cheers all!

>>135836503

Something like 50h on SP. Enough time to learn all the mechanics (using gems in battle, communions, rituals, items) and find out most of the good spells. Soon after that I joined a scrub game here and won it. In that single game I learned double of triple the amount that I had in SP, and I've learned even more after that.
>>
>>135841829
You better test expansion in SP. It's the only worthwhile thing you can get out of it.
>>
>>135841829
As EA/MA C'tis you want to use either taskmasters or indie commanders to lead your expansion parties (I usually put 1-2 sacred serpents in the squads to ensure they won't rout at the first sign of trouble if I'm using indie commanders) with your forts pumping out Sauromancers (EA) or Marshmasters (MA). As long as you position the troops right and use arrow decoys, the slave lizards will strike first/only have 2-3 enemies reach them first, and then they will kill and rout the enemies on their turn. I rarely see indies last more than 1 round against them once they get to melee beyond heavy cav, but then again those provinces you should avoid early on unless it's a crucial location.
>>
>>135840162
Who even are you?

And the game is treating me about as well as it could given the nation.

Reborn/shaman are 9rp/turn, Sauromancers are 15rp so essentially 7.5rp/turn since they are StR so yes you get a slower research (you might want to recruit shamans first year for the extra research but mostly since it's cheaper). But then reborns and shamans are pretty useless in combat (you can get shamans to do Stellar Cascades spam if you manage to get Light of the Northern Star, which you can't at least in the early game) compared to the Sauromancers, and you really need those Sauromancers for skelly/shadow blast/etc. spam

Take a big bless and luck/magic scales. Wot5e don't need much gold, so you can expand even with turmoil scales.
I'm currently running S9W9 Dom8 T3S3H3G3L3M2. Your wushus are little blenders, and S9 makes your ancestors a massive pain to fight through without a magic weapon. H3 makes your fire summons nasty, and W9 is good for everyone. And luck/magic means you'll have a ton of gems.

And in seven turns after human ermor turned AI he successfully as the most gem production per turn. Really the human was holding it back
>>
>>135856378
The thing is that you still have to use regular troops and magic. Masters of the Way can still cast decent ish magic with their randoms. Wot5E are great but have obvious weaknesses and are limited to their cap. Flaming Arrows for example is quite good on their bowmen.
Ancestors don't even come up until you get conjurgation 7.
>>
>>135856491
As an Ermor shitter, I am deeply embarrassed.
>>
>>135856414
Is crossbreeding (or the improved variant) actually useful? I feel like there are probably easier ways to get lots of cheap meatshields if you want them
>>
>>135856846
Improved Cross Breeding is great for getting chaff out of blood slaves. The downside is that you can also get, like, an army of elite demons instead which is better for winning. If you're trying to stuff a fort to prevent it from being sieged, it's one of the best spells you can cast.
>>
>>135856846
There are some good crossbreeds but it's not generally worth it (especially not on pretenders)
>>
>>135856784
As someone who is using that build and not theorycrafting about how shit it must be ...

>you have to use regular troops
You're able to. You can't pump out massive hordes quite as quickly, but I have several hundred bowmen/footmen running around supporting my armies even with sloth. Lower gold =/= no gold.

Also, frankly, you're less reliant on those troops. They're mostly there to distract from your main threats.

>Wot5e are cap only
So? You get 8 a turn, that's plenty to carry you into mid game
>Obvious weaknesses
Pretty much just arrowfire. Which is incredibly easy to deal with.
>ancestors don't come up until conj 7
Actually, they come up conj 1. Not many, but with a good bless they're much better than skeletons. I've used them to fend off a vanhere rush (in that game). With an S9 bless they take an average of 8 attacks to kill, and can stunlock most enemies by then. Also, you have magic 2, cheap researchers, and are rushing conj anyways.

>masters of the way can cast decentish spells
Not really. 135 gold for a communion slave is terrible. w1a1 is useless. W1N1 is nearly useless. W2 is not great until you get construction 6.

If I'm being aggresive, it's because you are currently telling me that a build I am using, and which is working well, is bad.
>>
>>135857856
>>135857856
As someone who ran O3L1 with a W9 bless, most of my gem income came from using my Masters of the Five Elements to site search.
About Ancestors, they are frankly quite difficult to bless unless you have your prophet. I disagree about Masters of the Way being bad though. 1/4 of them are Heavenly River casters, 1/4 of them can cast mossbody or swarm, and 1/4 of them can summon elementals or cast spells like cleansing water or ice strike. Only the W1A1 could really be considered bad, but they're all priests as well.

>>
>>135840770
If you're up against a province with mages, you should have mages too.
>>
>>135861049
Skellyspam gets more bodies on the field with more HP each, and doesn't require a bless to be useful. If you're spamming ancestors, you either need one H3 or a number of H1/2s per army to keep them all blessed. The sheer number of mages and priests necessary to beat even smaller armies with ancestor spam makes it very inefficient.

Wot5E with a heavy bless are definitely awesome and not many nations have a good way of dealing with them early on so you can blessrush the fuck out of people with them, but ancestors aren't that great until you get the spell that lets you summon more than 1 per turn. At best they're a decent way to distract enemy troops from your Wot5E.

I don't know whether I should feel bad about starting this argument with a single question when I barely know the game. Hell I don't even know what the S in W9S9 is supposed to be, +Strength from the blood bonus?

Welcome aboard.

You don't seem to be at war with anyone, just chilling in your part of the sea. Don't know if R'lyeh had any pacts with anyone - as for me, we've decided on the border and that's it. Chainstaling started after R'lyeh took two provinces on the island, all according to our agreement.

Marignon had some trouble sending the turns since the beginning - requested an extension once or twice in the first year and staled a couple turns. A few turns ago he apparently lost a battle against Bogarus and since then we haven't seen him at all.

The current wars are:
1. Jomon and Bogarus against Abysia and Agartha.
2. Man against Ragha.
I have no idea if Patala's doing anything.

Is it actually possible for a D4 mage to cast Darkness without boosters or a communion? Have I misunderstood things completely, or is it impossible to reduce the 400 fatigue on the spell because the required 4 gems is already as many as you can use?
>>
>>135880181
A single mage won't take more than 200 fatigue from casting the spell. A D4 mage can cast Darkness easily.
>>

You've misunderstood things completely.

The 4 gems required for casting already reduce the fatigue, so you don't need extra to cast them.

Hey there. I need some tactic help.
I am playing as la xibalba against arcos and midgard. Arcos is using an ether lord to raid me and i just got a bane lord. My research is cons4 and a shaman province. I am investing in blood now to get onaqui and illearth.
Should I try to thug with bane lords or let my armies deal with the ethereal lords?
I am surviving using beast bats, skelespam and illearth spam, but not enough to destroy my ebemies.
Also, midgard has a huge stack of einheres and vanjarls with TS spam. Any tips on that would be appreciated too.
Thanks
>>
>>135887430
How's your alteration research coming? Iron Bane is your go-to here, since you don't use any iron.
>>
>>135888527
Uhh
I made it this far without any alt...
I got conj5. Evo5. Cons4. Ench5. Blood almost7. Oh, and more than half upkeep, so i am only getting mages but not many zots
>>
>>135888865
THERE IS YOUR PROBLEM.

Alteration is really, really good for you. Earth meld, Iron Bane, Quagmire, they're all great. They fuck over the enemy, and leave you in good shape. Onaquis aren't that great to spend all your time researching them, when you could be waddling your toady little feet across the battlefield and stabbing the helpless, weaponless, armourless bastard in the throat. Get some blessed Zotz swat teams to flank around and fuck up his mages, while the toads and summons hold the line and trample over him.

I also advise you to take everything I say with a grain of salt, as I am bad.
>>
>>135889358
I know that, it´s just that this game I just didn´t do that!
I feel that Onaqui isn´t that necessary, but they do increase armies numbers and my god is built to cast infernal crusade. Generally I don´t get evo as xibalba, but I wanted to do some EQ with bloodstones, it does help against Arcos, but against Midgard with storm in every fight, geez...
Quagmire (and foul vapors) do sound like the way to go, but I am invested in blood now. I can hold my ground, but I will need some big force multiplier, so I will do as you suggest. Get more toads out there.
>>
>>135887430
What's the gear on the ether lord?
>>
>>135889890
Iron Bane is your force multiplier. Foul Vapours probably won't help much, as you don't have poison resist. It might harm more than help.
>>
>>135890316
He can cast Purify Blood with a communioned Way.
>>
>>135889980
it is ungeared, I dont know why...
my bless is BE, but I don´t know how to fit my own lords.
I dont know if xibalba really needs a thug, but I think in this situation, when I want my ¨armies¨ defending forts and mages researching, I could really use a couple of effective thugs.
But against ether warriors I would need some anti-magic beings I guess, and since ether lords have both S and D paths, my bane lord wouldnt stand much of a chance.

>>135890316
I see, but I will have blood 7 in couple turns, which allows me to cast purify blood (in a sabbath...). My armies are mostly beast bats and skelespam, but ofc I can use a months money to get troops instead of mages.
>>
>>135889980
Also, what is he casting, and what is your bless?
>>
>>135890674
the ethereal lord is spamming nether darts
bless is E8B8 (dont ask)
what if I take a couple of bloodhunters and spam hellbind heart?
sounds cool/legit?
>>
>>135891015
if he is really spamming spells you can easily kill him with anything.

units with over 100 fatigue die easily to anything.

did you actually fight it?
>>
>>135891015
Hellbind heart is mr-negate, and Ether Lords have mr 18, so not a great idea unless you really spam it.

You could try to use an handful of Obsidian Warriors. Their magic weapons will ignore the etherealness, and you can easily pump their strength up with blessing and strenght of giants.
>>
>>135891015
>what if I take a couple of bloodhunters and spam hellbind heart?
You'll need more than a couple, but sounds good.

Check your positioning carefully, the range is a bit short and it's easy to be out of range. Also give them some screening troops, otherwise the ether lord will probably hit them with nether darts.

>>135891728
He might have soul vortex. That would keep him topped up on hp/fatigue against most chaff troops, you'd need to send something high-MR with good damage to kill him.

>>135891796
But if it works you get an ether lord. That's fairly deep S access that LA Xibalba doesn't have natively, and possibly a useful SC later.
>>
>>135892214
>SC
Not with 25 hp, but I agree that and a "free" Ether Lord would be a valuable addition for anybody.
>>
>>135892446
If you dump boosters on them until they can cast Soul Drain, they get pretty scary.

It's counterable if your enemy sees it coming, but if they don't it can wreck an army.
>>
>>135891728
nah, I let it took some UW provinces
the lord has a retinue of 14 guys, so he can spam and get away with it.

>>135891796
that sounds excellent

I will try both approachs.
Thanks, it was enlightening.

>>135892214
I havent seen him casting soul vortex, I dont know if he hasnt it researched or if he is noober than I am.

If this entertain you guys, lets discuss how to deal with midgard now?
my current sketch of a plan is to just EQ the skinshifters out of the way, I would need like 5 casters?
they put up storm, which annoys the grievance of me. I am getting myself a little army of storm demons, so he will have a surprise later.
Quagmire, as pointed before, might help (it is ench and I can cast it).
A good dose of illearth should work too.
>>
>>135893206
if you want to EQ, try using Darkness first.
EQ is a defense check, so if you lower it with darkness it will be more likely to damage their units.

If he has a retinue, the small squad of Obsidian Warriors might get entangled with that. Ensure you bring enough (test it beforehand with the Debug mod)

After you open with the EQs, start skelespamming hard (you can do an ungodly amount with communions and earthpower D2). Season with Darkness, Rigor Mortis, Quagmire and Foul Vapors if you can get poison resist.

The map is done, fixed and uploaded. I'll email llamabeast as well in case something went wrong and it needs to be uploaded manually.

I've changed a number of starting provinces from 3 to 2. Apparently, the game does not favor nation's capring when distributing provinces and it's probably better to avoid some people having a neighbour on turn 1.

If you want to change your pretender design because of that, now's the time to do so. I'll start the game tomorrow around 6 pm EST.

Sorry for the delay. Starting on March 21 wasn't part of my plan.

Right now it's really hard to get a foothold underwater, since you'll likely be competing with at least one of Lemuria, R'lyeh, Atlantis. These three nations can bring all their mage support and troops to an underwater fight, whereas Jomon can't.

They could use better land mage options or better ways underwater.
>>
Make LA Pangaea's Grove Guards sacred. Their name and lore already imply that they should be.
>>

>LA Jomon
Give the monks of the fivefold path +1S so they have a better battlemage for their nifty sacred spells and a cheaper communion slave.
Give them a new mage with linked randoms so they can consistently get higher paths i.e. 2(FAWEN) .1(FAWEN).
Give them an amphibious "Shugenja of the Seas" with W(FAWEN) and gift of water breathing, so they can get underwater more easily.

LA Aby is fine, just like LA Ulm is

I'm going to be facing an early game war with Lemuria soon. Other than banishment spam, what other options can I pursue in terms of magic? Is there a spell that gives your units magic weapons other than flaming arrows? Is it possible to muscle through their ghosts with physical units if I have a significant economic advantage?
>>
>>135938731
Solar Rays? Flaming Arrows?
Really though it depends what nation are you?
>>
What if the game randomly generated all spells and rituals on a per match basis and you didn't know what was in a level of a school until you researched it. It feels like that would solve 90% of the game's problems. Things like RoS would still exist but there's be a lot of overpowered and underpowered spells and it'd be roughly random instead of everything being moderately okay with a few outlying totally fucking useless spells and a few that just obliterate everything else. It wouldn't matter if there were super over powered spells anyway because you wouldn't just be able to beeline to it.

I have access to all paths of magic but water. Is flaming arrows really the only spell that gives your units magic weapons?
>>
>>135939306
When you start a game the only spells you can see are conj0/alt0/ench0/etc and they're randomly generated. When you research conj1 you can see and juse conj1 spells and they are also randomly generated.
>>
>>135939436
> Is flaming arrows really the only spell that gives your units magic weapons
Yes. Although you can summon units that have magic weapons like mantises or even better, use fire or air elementals since they have aoe attack and are tough as heck.
>>
>>135939259
>>135939461
That's completely stupid if you're leaving it all to chance.
>>
>>135938731
Prioritize construction 4, or find someone willing to trade you endless bags of wine. You'll need the supply items.

You can't give magic weapons outside flaming arrows (which I'm not sure actually makes the weapon itself magic, it might just add a magical secondary effect). The best you can do is summon units with magic weapons or use magic. If you have fire elementals, those would be very powerful but expensive on gems.

>Is it possible to muscle through their ghosts with physical units if I have a significant economic advantage?
It's probably possible if you have a numbers advantage, as they'll have an even harder time hurting you than you will have hurting them. The issue is their fear-causing units, which are likely to be spread among their troops. Given the time any such battle would take, odds are your troops will end up routing long before the fight ends.

>>135939506
>air elementals
Don't have an AoE attack, and would be a bad option here since they will attempt to trample instead of attacking anyway.
>>
>>135939556
It's not stupid then because it's not all to chance because you'd know you're getting summoning when you go for conjuration or evocation when you go for evocation. It'll also add a cool diplomatic aspect because you could make a trade by saying "I managed to research this really good battlefield wide spell I'll tell you where it is if you give me X"

You just wouldn't know where all the good spells are at the start and would have to learn as you go instead of just "I will make my pretender E2A3 because I know that's where all the good spells are and I can ignore all the others"
>>
>>135939682
But that's just kinda fucking retarded because most spells in Dominions are either trash with a little amazing for each path.
Let's take Summon Tarrasque for example compared to something like Living Clouds.
>>
>>135939786
tarrasque would be good at conj 1, since your opponents might have issues with dragon slaying at that point.
>>
>>135939259
>>135939461
>>135939682
That would be terrible, because you would have no idea where the counters to enemy strategies are.

You could end up fighting MA C'tis who got foul vapors at ench1, and have the poison resistance spells to counter it sitting at ench9.

It would also make RoS even stronger in some situations, because it's available ridicuously early (e.g. evo1) before anyone has counters ready.

>>135939839
Without boosters, you'd need a pretender to cast it. Also, no gems that early.
>>
>>135939786
I'm confident that the spell generator would generate mostly good spells if unlike illwinter, you actually put in some effort to generate useful spells. Things like touch of death are only useless because of the broken mage AI.
>>135939953
That's just a question of having the spell generator lock combinations of certain attributes behind levels ie battlefield enchantments being locked behind level 5 of any school. And weighing certain attributes to schools so enchantment having a high probability of giving you buffs that protect vs damage types.
>>
>>135940205
>That's just a question of having the spell generator lock combinations of certain attributes behind levels ie battlefield enchantments being locked behind level 5 of any school.
Foul Vapors at level 5 and the counters at level 9 is still really really bad.

That's 25 turns or more between the two research levels, and that's assuming my research was focused on enchantment from the start.
>>
>>135940418
*unzips level 1 wish
>>
>>135940418
Also, if I'm understanding your idea right, I wouldn't have any assurance that the counter would be in enchantment, or even that it exists at all.

>>135940418

You'd get something. There'd be very good odds of getting some form of poison resistance before a battle wide poison enchantment came online, you might get something really weird like aoe ench3 poison resist with an MRN checked chance to disease but you'd get something. And it goes both ways, you might get some window of opportunity to take advantage of a really good spell that the other guy isn't prepared for. It becomes your ability to think on your feet, adapt, and the bit of randomness/unfairness that is inherent to dom4 instead of this super set in stone X nation uses Y spell Z nation counters with W spell.
>>
are large armies actually a viable thing into lategame or are they vulnerable to getting shat on by squads of mages or overworld spells

does one have to mix a lot of mages into the 'mundane' for coverage or what
>>
>>135941886
>and the bit of randomness/unfairness that is inherent to dom4
What you're suggesting is a lot more randomness than currently exists in dom4. Many nations depend very heavily on getting specific spells to be able to fight, especially against certain types of enemies.

It might be workable if you added randomly generated spells onto a fixed list which keeps most of the dom4 spells. That way you'd have reliable magic goals which don't rely on favorable RNG while still retaining some degree of improvisation.

To encourage improvisation you could make randomly generated spells more powerful than vanilla spells, on average.
>>
Well how do you deal with Foul Vapors if you don't have nature access?
>>
>>135943065
You need to have answers to army clearing spells, and the exact nature of those spells will depend on your army and who you're fighting against.

>>135943873
Can you not hire an N1 indie?
>>
>>135943873
You can kill the enemy spellcaster
>>
>>135944367
So if the caster dies/retreats the enchament is gone like globals? Cool.
>>
>>135944426
Yep. Some battlefield wide effects modify units directly, like fog warriors and so on, so those will stay, but anything that creates a battlefield enchantment icon is tied to the caster.
>>
>>135943873
In order of preference:

Throw down your own battlefield spells that kill faster. (RoS and earthquake are ideal, since they'll likely kill the enemy caster as well and aren't massively harder in research)

Use only regenerating units (e.g. if you have N9 bless you could field a sacred-only army)

Try to win the battle quickly using aggressive tactics. Hope you don't lose your whole army to poison once the battle finishes.

Break into nature, very quickly. Probably via indies.

>>135944296
>Can you not hire an N1 indie?
The lowest level poison resistance spell is N2 and costs a gem. You'd need a thistle mace for that.
>>
>>135943664
>Many nations depend very heavily on getting specific spells to be able to fight, especially against certain types of enemies.
That's what I want to get away from. Instead of being about using your nation's specific spells, and then other nations using their specific counter spells, it'd be about using whatever the game throws at you, and then other people trying to find something on hand that can fight against it.
>What you're suggesting is a lot more randomness than currently exists in dom4
Events can make or break you to the point of ending the game, mage AI and the dice rolling is designed to have a chance at totally throwing things on their asses.
>>135943664
>It might be workable if you added randomly generated spells onto a fixed list which keeps most of the dom4 spells. That way you'd have reliable magic goals which don't rely on favorable RNG while still retaining some degree of improvisation.
I guess if you're that scared of the edge case where the game literally generates nothing you can use then there can be a small set of guaranteed spells.
>>
>>135945239
That'd be cool and all but I'd rather have something that isn't built like MtG or Heartstone randomness.
>>
>>135945372
>MtG or Heartstone randomness
I see what you're afraid of but the issue with card games is that you know you'll get something specific and you plan around getting it at a specific time, which creates the issue where if you don't get it you're shit out of luck, or if the other guy doesn't get what he wanted then he's shit out of luck and you win. Also the fact that they are competitive 1vs1 games with the assumption of a level playing field, while dominions 4 is not, makes it a false equivalency.
>>
>>135944607
or a communion.
>>
>>135945239
>I guess if you're that scared of the edge case where the game literally generates nothing you can use then there can be a small set of guaranteed spells.
The game doesn't need to generate nothing I can use to put me in a bad position. It just needs to generate spells which aren't very good.

Say I'm EA Maverni, and I don't get a good astral evocation (lets say, all the ingame astral evocations except stellar cascades). What am I going to do in combat, especially against hostile sacreds?
>>
>>135946187
>all the ingame astral evocations except stellar cascades
geysers are situationally good. I actually just won a fight by spamming it with LotNS S2s
>>
>>135946231
Maverni best shot at S2 is 1/4 chance (or StR cap-only), though. You'd need to get LotNS for that as well, which also can't be relied upon.

You could do it via communion (if you get lucky enough to have that spell) but I'm not sure about how well that'd work.

I've been using them for really cheap research, especially since I have a number of provinces where I don't need a fort to recruit them (just lab+temple). I'm not sure if it's worth it, but I think I've got the best research in the game right now.

That's my entire research force mobilized on defense duty, because the majority of my troops (and a good chunk of my useful mages) are over in the west taking shit from the guy who went AI there.

What do you do about War Elephant provinces when expanding? It seems like trying to force a quite rout is the way to go but I'm still not 100% clear on the morale mechanics and how to force a check. I've got about 3 D2 casters that could toss out some Frightens but if I'm not mistaken they'll still have to take damage on top of that before their morale matters. I have slingers and indy shortbow archers, would those be enough to punch through the elephants' armor and cause them to rout?

I'm EA Ermor, if they have any other tricks to use against elephants. Since the elephants are centered, I might actually get some cavalry to slip past them with Attack Rear and just chew up the commanders and slingers.

>>
>>135963437

Dominions client. Go multiplayer game, put in 'blitzserver.net' as the ip, put in the port on the website as the port, then click the nation that you want to upload a pretender for, choose the pretender you want to use.

Then go to the website and put in your email and when you want turn reminders to show up. This step is so that moggers knows you are a real person (tm) and so you get email reminders of turns happening.

LA Abysia is getting a buff. The difference is I already have a concrete idea of what to do with it. (in fact, it's pretty much done).

LA Jomon and the other named nations I have some ideas, but nothing firm just yet.
>>135955030
To make them suck less. Even though I like them, they're a below average nation that got hit pretty hard by changes (such as the seduction nerf) as the game has been progressively patched. They're not quite as ass as some other nations, so they won't be getting anything major, but they will be getting some sort of boost.

If you give the units to a nation, that nation then starts with those units so you can position them.

On a separate note, what's happening with Patala and Gath? I have no scouts down there.

Up north, Bats are eating Ragha, Patala seems to have finally broken T'ien Ch'i, and of course I'm about to eat Bogarus. Mictlan and Lemuria are still busy divvying up Caelum, Ulm, and Agartha.

Gath's in.. Gath. We think Gath is full of wolves, or.. something. 800 mans on top, fort no break. We keep send mans.

Horrors keep eat all nagarishi. Pedoseion has gone very insane.

We would prefer if all our mans weren't monkeys and all our mages weren't fragile unarmoured monkeys.

Yeah that battle in Uttonshire may be one of the funniest I've ever seen. I dunno, T'ien Ch'i seems to think they're boned but they seem to be doing allright from what I can see. Much better than can be expected given their size.

Oh and Patala has Grey Knights now. I guess now we know where all their gold is going. Can you spare some of those for the northern front?

Absolutely.

Lots of fun, though. Many fights. Two players (Therodos/Nazca/Marignon; Ermor/Pythium/Pythium) got knocked out pretty early, and another (Berytoes/Ctis/Abysia) got removed shortly before the game ended, with a couple others hanging on for survival in at least one age. Pelagia/Agartha/Jomon attempted a throne-grab in mid-game (mostly in MA) and was foiled. Lanka/Ashdod/Agartha started to run away with LA, with Fomoria/Pelagia/Mictlan fighting for dominance in EA/MA with Vanheim/Jotunheim/Ulm, with fomoria grabbing thrones in ea.

That was after Kin-Breaker, though. The Ulmish mage exiles and the Pythian forces took over the already broken kingdom.

"Agartha was a broken nation in need of guidance and he felt a need to guide them. By gathering mages who had fled the Iron Inquisition and with economic aid from the Emerald Emperor of Pythium, he organized the human conquest of the cavern realm of Agartha. "

So this is well after Kin-Breaker and Agartha's attempted conquest of the surface world were repulsed. Presumably that all happened before the Seal was broken.

First the Agarthans tried to conquer the world. They failed, and got pushed back to their caves. In desperation, they broke the seal. Then, after the kingdom was broken, Ulmish exiles funded by Pythium came and established MA Agartha.

Either way, that's the MA Ulm/Pythium link. The armies that the Agarthans actually lost to aren't explicitly stated.

Illusionists can stealth the number of people actually in the province.

>Ur destroyed by Niefelheim

>>
>>136028284
Sure, but it's sort of thematic. I don't think it's possible, but it'd be cool if they stopped being undisciplined if led by a particular commander (say, an Oni General or Dai Oni).
>>
>>136056924
There's a story event describing the whole thing.

>As a master of all forgotten languages, you have swiftly studied the ancient texts in the scriptorium. They speak of a distant age, when giants walked the earth and fought battles of such magnitude that was never seen again in the world of mortals. It seems the long dead inhabitants of this city were peaceful farmers worshipping their benevolent Lord in peace and piety. Their knowledge of science, astrology and agriculture were advanced, drawing the envy of rivaling nations. From the far north came frost giants, pillaging and destroying the fertile lands with their hatred and bitterly cold winters. Their civilization threatened with destruction, the elders of the city turned to powerful magic, summoning dragons to fight the intruders. The leader of the enemy giants was killed, but still the city fell, its splendour torn down, its glorious temples destroyed, its elders beheaded in the square. The once proud city-state dwindled into obscurity, only remembered in legends. You surmise this could be an account of a war between the earlier civilizations of Niefelheim and Ur. Notably, the capital of the latter was known as the First City. Further studies may yield more details.
>>
>>136057227
...huh.

That's... What? Huh.

I now have a mental image of Niefelheim beelining through Vanheim, Ulm, Agartha, Ermor, Sauromatia and Hinnom to slap Ur for casting Maelstrom before them.

Wot? I thought the Augurs foresaw a disaster and they tried to bring jesus back to life to stop it, and the irony was that the ritual they fucked up WAS the disasters the augurs foresaw.
>>
>>136059307
Nah, Sceleria's blurb says the thaumaturgs foresaw the disaster, proclaimed the emperor's brother to be the new emperor, and marched on Ermor. Ermor subsequently panicked and shat the bed by breaking the world.

Well, he mostly has single-player stuff, he doesn't seem to be producing new content atm, and his Bogarus attempt was Not Very Impressive to say the least.

Thank you for the recommendations, though!

For some reason i thought that "limit of gems used is how much fire magic he has" was a per-battle limit, and it's a per-cast limit.

Are you that unsecure of yourself and thinks everybody else wants a piece of you or you can´t read?
You offered to attack Yomi, as if I would say ¨NO! I do this alone! Get off!¨
If you wanted to HELP, and so I thought this was the case, I ASKED for those provs. It was implied that it would be a foothold so we could strike together.
And remember, you came and took those provs from me, you came offering help, you said you didn´t want to fight me.

You want to attack Yomi? You attack Yomi!
You want to attack me? You attack me!
Heck, why not just go and grab that throne?

Just venting, but honestly the way people talked about it in the past made it sound like AI was annoying because it was, comparatively easy. Also fish as I've said from turn 1 I'm willing to work with you here but not if you keep pressing into me without any real talk about what you want. "I want more of the ocean" doesn't help me negotiate with you and it really doesn't help when you attack my provinces when there are indies next to your expansion armies. I don't want an underwater war before year 1 but if you are unwilling to be reasonable I will fight back. Also be sure to read the messages I sent you this turn and next it's mostly what I said here but there may be something I forgot out of exhaustion.

Also ishtrian pretender doesn't seem like a good choice, demilich offers same thing two scales cheaper. And what's the point of having dormant booster crafter?
>>
>>136140148
33 is not a special number. And fear birds aren't size 6, they're size 3, which means the fear is twice as bonkers.

At a certain point of fear birbing, 33 morale will turn into something like -7 morale. And then they will route. It will just actually require several thousands gold worth in Daeva first

>Looks at the map
Oh wait, you're safe then.
>>
>>136140148
You'll still fail the fear check if there's enough of them.
>>136140450
>will turn into something like -7 morale. And then they will route.
This is not exactly how it works, you can still have negative morale and not rout, you still need to pass the morale check.

A big enough box will have negative morale on its borders and positive one in the center, with 33 morale that might actually matter.

I think it would serve everyone better to expand to all the free provinces that are all around them, as opposed to starting a possibly extremely costly war at a point when none of the people going in have reached their first research goals. With nearly all my expansion routes cut off, and me willingly refusing to expand closer to Ur out of courtesy, it should be easy for the people around me (sans Formoria, sorry about that shit start...)to have more provinces than me without needing to fight anyone.

I just don't see why we can't get along and just enjoy getting cancer from this game together.

If you still need someone, I'm in. Though I'll warn you again I'm a totally newbie to MP so things might get really bad/dumb

Caelum sub here with a dumb question. Says I need to use summod, which I hadn't downloaded until now, and which was apparently updated recently. So now I have summod056, but I need summod055. Any way to get the downgraded version?

Welp, there went nothing. Never used summod before, so I was pleased to see that Caelum sucks less than usual. See if they're good enough to take out some indies near my capital
>>
>>136168240
>so I was pleased to see that Caelum sucks less than usual
Caelum doesn't suck in any of the ages.
>>
>>136170957
What's good about LA Caelum?

Their mages suck and their troops are only good when you compare them to other caelian troops.

All the same things that are good about other Caelums - they still got cheap A2s, their troops can still raid anyone to death, they've got good expansion from mamonths.

They might not get storm as easily as before, but they still got it and a few other tricks to compensate - flying earthquakes/ros, flying skellyspam, their four attacks guys are pretty nice when buffed with E.

They are sort of mediocre nation compared to all the powerhouses of LA but they don't suck.
>>
Okay, how do I play MA Machaka? Everything they have is awful.

Blessed spiders? Awful.

Mages? kind of okay Awful.

Troops? I'd rather hire hoburgs.
>>
>>136176934
>Troops? I'd rather hire hoburgs.
Hoburgs are arguably the best troops in the game. Get very good protection for very little resources, universally high morale, good defense, ludicrous attacks per square, I guess the strength can suck but not a huge deal.

MA Machaka? Is that with sum1's fear spider buff?

Yes. And honestly, with sum1mod the spiders are actually pretty nice.

What are you blessing them with? I'd almost want to take astral minor to give them a bit more MR.

Do you like Dominions music ?

If not then whatcha listenin to?

W9S9, the meme bless. Was quite good vs most indies. Sadly, I didn't save 6 spiders vs light.heavy cav province screen.

Why W9? Spiders don't have that many attacks do they? And you're not bringing defense up to elven cant-hit-shit levels. With HP concentration really high on each unit it sounds like you'd get a lot out of N9.

>>136177247

2 attacks (not counting the lance and fear) is still okay. It's not griffins, but it's not niefel giants either. I honestly didn't know how to start, so I picked the first option that seemed okay. And they don't have that many HPs for N9 too. Gotta test it though.

Sabaton have like 3 good songs
>>
>>136178606
Scratch that, Blucher is a Kamelot song. Sabaton's only good song is Price of a Mile
>>
>>136177528
You are aware that they turn into ~60 HP sacred spiders when they die?

I'll be playing them in another summod game and with all the nerfs they got in recent version I'll probably just take N9 and a minor S.
>>
>>136177247
Yeah, but I usually listen to Wardruna or Howard Stern
>>
>>136176825
>ros
With Summod, it's significantly harder for them to to an effective (i.e. turn1) RoS, unless they enemy forgot to bring counters or Caelum has access to bloodstones.
>>
>>136177528
>but it's not niefel giants either
Don't you get two giants to a square?
>>
>>136181374
Nope. Niefels are size 5.
>>
>>136179152
>You are aware that they turn into ~60 HP sacred spiders when they die?
I was aware that they had second form, but not that it had 55 HP.
>>
>>136178818

I disagree with both your statements, they have many good songs, Price of a Mile isn't one of them.
