Worthless Shit Edition

Last Thread: >>135389234

>What in the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Middens, Bastion, Machinarium, Braid, Limbo, Axiom Verge, Guacamelee, The Desolate Hope, Sonic Dreams Collection, Doritoe Galaxy, etc.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early access. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indies, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. Besides that, don't forget to play our !!!!GAME OF THE WEEK!!!!* and other indie games to have lots of joy and to make more discussions to our general. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone.

*The game of the week deal isn't currently going on at the moment for one reason or another. Lack of interest I believe. -JSA

>>135779671
>>135778374

When drawn at a distance, sometimes characters are simplified. You can see this in cartoons like Star Vs the Forces of Evil or Steven Universe, and comics like Ms Marvel.

Also, it's just a preview, maybe he'll draw in the hands later.

>>135790159
>>135791948
>>135805285

Scott said he didn't intend for the game to be an anti-abortion message. Whatever your interpretation, it's worth a play though although the game play can be a little confusing. Look at all the shit going on in this battle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSAoggVnbb4

i think the game needed some easy non-boss monsters so it'd be easier for players to familiarize themselves with stuff in the game. You get a practice dummy, but an easy enemy would be easier to let you know how to beat something that fights back. As it is, any battle is always balls to the wall since you're trying to figure shit out while you're busy getting raped by viruses.

>>135806351

>Cow man

You mean a Bullman Cowboy, or is he a trannie?

>>135811437

Is there a joy mutant Papyrus?
>>
>>135854643
That's somethign I noticed scott does a lot with battlesystems oddly. He makes them way too cluttered and oversaturated with visual feedback. He over does it in a sense, just look at the most recent game he made, it's too saturated and clustered too. He he also does this with a lot of his designs too but that sorta works more I think. It's not like he can't go sorta minimalist either. Just look at his most well known game.
>>
>>135854394
Well in the case of Talos Principle, the developers literally just made a series of 100+ puzzles then hired a writer to build a story around it.

Ah crap I'm supposed to do these aren't I? Sorry for my lack of reviews, I've really got no excuse. Now here's Gateways.

Gateways is a puzzle-platformer Metroidvania game featuring a scientist named Ed. Ed wakes up one day in the lab to see that everything has gone to shit and it might be a good idea to clock out. However it's easier said than done as Ed will have to get through escaped monkey-bot experiments and a fuck-ton of puzzles.

The main mechanic of this game is that Ed has a Gateway gun, which you might have guessed is on the brink of a lawsuit from Aperture. Thankfully it managed to avoid said lawsuits from an eccentric Richard Simmons by giving it several varieties: a gun with portals that alter size, another that alters gravity, and the most confusing one that involves time travel, and then down the line you'll get one that allows you to use multiple modes at once. With the gateway guns you'll also find other helpful tools which can cause the puzzles to get really complex. Thankfully you get tips by spending orbs scattered all over the lab but since there's only a limited number of orbs you better make sure you are extremely stumped or just use a walkthrough. All in all the puzzles are solid and the soundtrack is great so I'd definitely recommend this title.

Do we know if Dingaling is SJW or anti-SJW? I get the feeling that Jorful was all about how it's okay that Buddy kills because she's the only woman left and thus intrinsically knows better than everyone else.
>>
>>135899631
>Jorful
>>
>>135899631
Okay first of all, Buddy does kill because she thinks she is better everyone else, however during the game she's been fed with joy, a drug that causes you to not think twice, she thought that her solution to cause people to stop going after her is making them afraid of her and to achieve that she would have to become the strongest person of Olath, thus causing her to go in a massive murder fest.
It has nothing to do with being SJW, fuck off.
>>
>>135899631

But Buddy was painted as a bad person for wanting to do all that shit. Did you really think Dingaling meant for the audience to side with Buddy over Rando when he kept asking Buddy to end her killing spree?
>>
>>135899631
You shouldn't base the work of the creator onto him, everyone wanted to kill or rape buddy except a couple of dudes which is few,I think ding is just a ordinary dude

Two Metroidvanias I appreciate:

First is Environmental Station Alpha, which is a good Metroidvania with great exploration but it gets kind of backtracky and is very, very hard.

Second is Castle In The Darkness, which suffers a similar problem of having insta-kill spikes and lots of cheap death, but great exploration.

I know I usually only write one a day but what the hell, I'm in the mood. Here's hets, a colorful platforming roguelike.

The plot of hets is simple as your NPC friend explains "ever since we put up these statues everything's gone to shit! take my rifle and destroy these statues." And there you have it, you're equipped with a rifle, a mission, and whatever upgrades you pick in between levels. There are only thirteen levels and you only need to destroy the statues and find the exit to progress but it balances this seemly short premise by being hard, fair enough. You'll also get a choice of one upgrade out of a pool of three provided each intermission along with a, usually negative, quip from your pal on your choice of upgrade. It's definitely a fair but challenging experience with a great scribble-style art. It's free on itch.io so I'd definitely give it a spin if you are looking for a free kick to the ba- I mean challenging experience.

Scratch: https://ditto.itch.io/hets

Apparently Gawker posted a sex tape of Hawk Hogan fugging some chick on their website. Hulk got a court order for them to take down that video, but they refused. This was somewhat hypocritical of them, because they condemned it when people were leaking nude pictures of female celebrities.

Hulk got upset at this and took them to court. Gawker lost a lot of sympathy with the jury at court, even joking around that they'd leak sex tapes of children if they thought it would get them clicks. Hulk won the case, and now Gawker has to pay him an assload of money.

Good afternoon /indie/! ...Well as good as it can be. God being sick sucks. So Melody's Escape! It's a rhythm based runner.

There's not much to say about it, you give the game any file with audio and it will create an obstacle course of sorts based on the rhythm and melody of the song. You then get to run through it, trying to chain together successful button presses. You'll be given several difficulties that make things more complicated as they increase. It's primarily done by increasing the number of buttons you need to use. For example in "Intense" you'll need the analogue stick and the letter buttons for obstacles and colored orbs respectively but set it one difficulty down and it combines the two so you'll only need four "buttons". I find this a fair way to increase difficulty but can also leave some nasty habits if you play on the lower difficulties for too long. This is the sort of game where the amount of fun you have with it is determined by the amount of music you've got. If you're an audiophile like me then you can get literal hours of gameplay out of this if not then you can pass it up as the game doesn't come with any tracks of it's own.

If you liked the Splatterhouse games, this is a parody of it. It's in Japanese, so I don't really know the plot. As far as I can tell, the hero is on death's door, but is brought back to life by a mysterious power. And now he has to fight his way though an army of horrible monsters.

Be warned that it's really gory. The monsters, many of which resemble human females, can be killed in various ways like punching them to pieces, tearing their heads off, slicing them in half, hitting them so hard they splat against the wall like insects, etc. Different monsters even die in different ways from the same weapons (like if you use the sword, some monsters get their heads sliced off, others get sliced at the midsection.) The put a lot of effort into the death scenes for the monsters, but I don't think the hero has any unique death scenes. Plus it's pornographic, but you mostly just fuck them normally. There isn't any skullfucking or using their intestines to jack yourself off or any weird gurosex stuff like that, although you can choke one of the monsters to get yourself off. Also, some of the monsters you can rape are rather /d/-tier, like the monster who's the bottom half of a woman attached to the bottom half of a horse (think of those doll monsters from Silent Hill.)

Best monster was the chainsaw lady.
The guiltiest fap was the weird head woman hanging off the ceiling.
Grossest monster was the fat chained up woman.

Here is a download link if you want to try it.

Do you see where it says "Download Current CSS"? It's highlighted. Click on that to download it. Then you'll have to edit the downloaded CSS file, and then when you're done, you can click on "Browse" then select the newly edited CSS file then click "OK."

But it'll take 4 hours for the changes to become visable, so you might want to do this: "The best way of debugging this thing I can think of is use File > Save as web page menu and edit .css locally, then once it looks good upload to your booru and wait for half a day for it to update."
>>
>>136026468
On a gameplay level, La-mulana is incredibly deep as its level design and world design are all connected in such a complex and difficult way that it is able to be the most non-linear non-procedurally generated 2D game ever made.

La-mulana also has concise direction, in which level design, music, gameplay, art style, and everything all compliment eachother near-perfectly, and achieves this by polishing up the world by adding lore and putting in details and decorations that make the world more interesting, believable, and, well, have depth.
>>
>>136026061
>The rest aren't
I agree or Witnss and Talos Principle, but Gemcraft is actually pretty complex.

As for some other indie games with depth (though it might not be the kind of depth you're looking for):
AI War
Miasmata
Ultimate General: Gettysburg
Brigador (still in EA, is mainly missing content but has most core mechanics in place)
Project Aura (still in EA, still lacking lots of core mechanics)
Consortium
Drox Operative
Dominions 4
Hegemony
Factorio (still in EA, but has tons of shit already)
Starsector (same as Factorio)

However, I wouldn't call all of these polished.

I remember playing a shitty RPG Maker fangame of FFVII complete with stock RPGM graphics (I think it was FFVII: the Dark Cloud) as a teen. I got it from a gaming magazine CD (obviously they didn't have good quality control). Since I grew up in a post-socialist country and was still playing NES bootlegs into the 2000s, I wasn't particularly familiar with the gaming industry and assumed it was a LEGITIMATE port of some sort. Played it for days and even told my friends I played FFVII...(I only beat the actual deal this year). Coming back to it a decade later it's...below average.
>>

I'd call it a "it's the norm" situation and you can pin it on graphics determining how pricey a game should be. People are conditioned to shell out 70$ dollars for realistic looking 3D environments and are conditioned to shell out 10$ for retro pixel graphics regardless of how the gameplay is.

I remember a game called Vampires Dawn 2. Was probably my first foray into indie games. Didn't even have internet at the time and got it off some magazine CD. I don't know how it would hold up today, but at the time I thought it was the greatest shit ever. A little edgy/grimdark at times, but turning literally every NPC in the gameworld into a vampire to fight in your army and conquer castles across the world was pretty fun and prevented me from finishing the game because there were questgivers among them, which were the best way to gain EXP and I couldn't find a good spot to grind levels for the final boss, so I could never beat him.

However, it's German and I don't know if there's an English translation for it.

Other than that, Breath of Death/Cthulhu saves the world, while not amazing, are decent and have some interesting mechanics as well.

Should Talos Principle even be considered indie? It was published by Devolver Digital therefore making it clearly not indie.

Walk-sim are usually 3D Games lacking (the term is harsh but true) any real gameplay, and instead try to tell an interactive story through vidya.

Can be enjoyable if you're into this. Some of them are really only about their story (Gone Home, Firewatch, Dear Easter), and varies from meh to good, others like to poke fun at video games in general and ask questions about the genre in general (The Stanley Parable, The Beginner's Guide, and also, in a way, Firewatch).

I'm quite easy to convince on stories and I like vidya that go away from ordinary fantasy/sci-fi, so I usually like walk-sim. The writing in particular of The Stanley Parable is top-notch.

JW and Rami Ismail.
JEW can't code for shit, regular people and 4chan posters can code better than him.
When Rami Islami, a SJW muslim checked the code and realized it's a fucking mess he decided to clean it up.
However, ironically he may have made the code even more Salami as the game is even buggier now.
Hell, one guy reported 300 FUCKING BUGS that aren't fixed.
The game would benefit greatly from modding, too - they only need to give one file, but Rami Swami always leaves any discussion about that faster than you can show an example of pic related.

Heya /indie/ how are you doing? I apologize for not having a review yesterday I was working on this little essay comparing Hotline Miami and it’s successor, Wrong Number, along with it’s flaws and shortcomings.

When Hotline Miami originally came out it was hailed as a fantastic game, a pinnacle of the action game genre for it’s fast gameplay and trippy story and I’m inclined to agree. When the sequel was announced people were indeed excited but sadly the end result wasn’t as great as were were hoping for. Wrong Number was plagued with major shortcomings with the greatest one being Dennaton’s unfortunate perception that bigger would equal better, also know as the Law of Sequels.
>>
>>136238896
Given how long the games have been out I’m sure you might have an idea as to what I mean but I’ll explain it anyway. In Hotline Miami the levels were broken up into small stages with checkpoints and Wrong Number does the same but with a key difference; the stages are much bigger and there can be more of them per level. While they are vastly more detailed this still creates the problem of being shot out of the blue from way off screen, causing extra frustration if one doesn’t even know about the enemies that cold-cocked them to to restart (this is especially well illustrated in the first stage of the level “Dead Ahead”). While the controls of the original weren’t as tight as Wrong Number’s refined controls it becomes moot when the nature of the level design has you hiding in corners and using gunshots to bait enemies into a bottle-neck for you to wipe them out. Having a big open field full of enemies that can kill you in one shot can discourage from going in gun-blazing real fast. While this could work for some games it goes against the scoring system that rewards you with combo multipliers when your best strategy to win is a bait-and-wait style of gameplay. This starts to turn it from a fast paced action game to a cautious slog. Compare this Hotline Miami were shorter and more contained, thus giving a feeling of quick bursts of action though some levels do get a little bigger and more Wrong Number-esque though it was never to the degree of Wrong Number itself. It actually does bring me to an interesting observation from an anon who said “What I love about Hotline Miami 2 is that the difficulty curve kind of starts at the same level HM1 ends.” and while I wholeheartedly agree it also feels like the encouraged strategy has changed as well.

This Is why I’m looking forward to Midnight Animal. Hopefully it will fix the flaws in Dennatons creations by learning from the dev’s mistakes and rectifying them. From what I've seen, I'm hopeful.
