I feel really worthless. I have to go to a shitty art college for 4 years so I can do studio work in the states.

Sometimes, I feel like I should just say fuck it and go full freelance for games of all types...

I've got the shape and texturing roughed out for the latest stage for my game. The lower untextured portion will be a bridge, the upper will be a waterfall.

What would be the best way to handle the water fall and water edges? Figure the majority of the water fall could be a scrolling texture and use particles for where it hits the water below.

Make prototype, that's the easiest way. Maybe you'll discover a bug that actually makes it fun, maybe it will be fun with some simple number tweaks, maybe you'll think of something while devving it. If the prototype would take more than 2 weeks to finish the game is too big to begin with.

Reposting updated version of my Unity class
http://pastebin.com/aNSppNa9

It allows you to new up a fake Transform without using a GameObject in the real world and manipulate it using Transform's methods (for things like forward, RotateAround, etc)

It doesn't deal with hierarchy structure like Transforms do, but I didn't need it to for my use cases.
>yeah, it's like 40-45% comments, most of the class is overloaded methods
>>
>>135684257
cool blog update
>>
>>135683840
That's way too fucking dynamic for you to even begin getting a playable state in the next 10 years.
Especially considering your work habit.
Even scoping it down to a pre-made track for a level is going to be an immense amount of work.

Not to mention:
Pitch
cutoff
decay
attack
panning
EQ leveling mechanics
Hz
Resonance
Figuring out how to balance dissonance.
And many more variables.

Find a new game please.
>>

Why do you need a musician though? You probably mastered music after making that wheel of fifths app you raved about for like half a year, and even attacked me when I told you it was a dumb idea. I bet you're already Bach-tier
>>
>>135684440
That's not something you can do, atleast right now.
A game like that takes a musician with years of composing experience.

I honestly don't know why I'm trying to help you, you never listen when we tell you the dumb shit you're doing.
>>
>>135680272
i feel like there are plenty of books and courses you can start with

if you are going to a prestigious college it might help you more than a good portfolio, but i feel like the resrouces for self learning out there are far greater than what teachers at school can offer
also mind you that a teacher rolls out everything at a slow pace, while with videos or books you can basically skip to whatever material you are looking for
>>
>>135682867
I actually think I found the issue, I'm just not sure how to resolve it. I don't even know how to properly explain it.
I'm initializing a sprite object, which itself only points to an existing texture like this:
vector.back().sprite.setTexture(vector.back().texture)

However, since std::vector::back() itself returns a reference, I think the issue is that the sprite will point at something different once there's a new element inserted at the end of the vector.

Or something like that, I really don't know anymore.

I found a musician on facebook and show him my idea and he was interested.
>>
i don't know what to work on
>>
>>135684675
It won't be your game though considering he'll be doing most of the work.
Oh well.
Have fun I guess.
>>
>>135684430
The basic example is "You want to store the information that a Transform stores, and you want access to Transform's methods, but you don't want to have a real world GameObject because of complexity/performance concerns"

My example is that I'm trying to lerp between 2 "Transform"s position and rotation with a Camera object, but I don't actually have real world Transforms and can't afford to have them. The only Transform I have to work with is the Camera's. That would have been fine, except that I want to manipulate the 'target' transform that I'm lerping to WHILE I'm lerping to it. That would require me to manually calculate how I'd manipulate my target Quaternion and Vector3 because I wouldn't be able to use the Transform object. Creating this allows me to new up a fake Transform and manipulate it, then I can apply it when I need to as well as manipulate the fake Transform during flight.

The problem could be solved with a real world Transform object, but that's what I'm trying to avoid having. Especially since I'm building a large series of components for manipulating Cameras.
>>

People confuse "easier" with "more efficient"

Just because something is faster, doesn't make it 'easier'. C# doesn't waste your time with reinventing wheels so you can focus on actually producing new content rather than focusing on reinventing all 4 wheels for your car.
>>
>>135686958
precisely, so saying that C# is easier to not write shitty code in is also a moot point because it comes down to the programmer not the language.

ProfessionalNodev got stuck on mine for ~15 minutes. It was painful to see the one tiny "mistake" that was keeping them from progressing, but also a good sign if they were determined enough to keep trying to 15 mins. Its so crucial to see people play your thing to know where you need to be more accommodating.

What about...

A Diabo-styled RTS. Gameplay revolves around micro strategy instead of macro. You have to fight your way through randomly generated levels with a group of ~20 troops, who will pick up randomly generated loot to buff themselves. Different troops classes have abilities, such as clerics being able to heal or archers being able to shoot elemental arrows that can disable enemies

you CAN make games with source, but the engine itself is so bad for straightforward game development so most of the people who use it usually comes from the modding community.

now you could argue that source modding communities are somewhat dead at this point, but you can still make games from so called "mods", but its unlikely.

We could migrate to 420chan, the kind of disruptive behavior that cripples this general wouldn't be tolerated there.

Two problems though: they have no catalog for their boards so finding a thread can be a hassle, and 4channers would probably bump every 30 seconds despite that /vg/ there is slow as molasses. The slow part helps for finding a thread, I'd probably just keep it open.

They have per-board IDs sort-of. They wear off after some amount of hours, and they're in the form of a random name which can confuse people who are dumb.

can agdg be cloned:
yes, but you will lose 75% of the posters
look at all the dead chans for proof
the most active of these (crippleretardchan) has a new post maybe every 3 hours and the entire site is fundamentally broken
can agdg be improved:
what are you proposing?
a means to ban people? that won't help, look what happens when that's attempted here
non-anonymous? watch while that 25% you managed to lure over suddenly changes to less than 1%

/agdg/, I went to sleep at 11:30 or so and now it's 3:30 and I can't sleep at all.

I was laying in bed for like 30 minutes trying to fall back asleep while working more through the story ideas I've been thinking of for my Paper Mario game the past week or so.
Since I still couldn't sleep after that, I decided to finally write out what I've thought of so far.
It's fairly vague and could still change drastically, but here's what I got so far for the main parts of the prologue:
http://pastebin.com/4S61AVyz

I know it's not code or gamedev, but with an RPG, story is a pretty important thing to develop as well, especially early on when deciding what will be needed to be coded in.
Any feedback on the ideas so far would be appreciated.

Also, the plan with the main villain (called ??? in the pastebin) is that they're going to be more of a small rogue's gallery/adventuring party on the same quest as Mario & co essentially. ??? will be getting their own partners and whatnot as the game goes on, often based on the bosses/minibosses encountered in the chapters.
So rather than the villain being a huge organization like Bowser's army, the X-nauts, or Bowser's hypnotized army under Bleck, it'll be more like if Bleck's crew went it alone (which they mostly did honestly).
??? will be kinda a second Mario that's against the player. Again, no idea what he/she will look/be like at all currently though.

I know, and I've been worrying about that on and off for the past two weeks.
Fact of the matter is, I won't know until I try.

>Nintendo sent C&D to that 2D Pokemon fighting game years ago
>Never C&D'd any Mario Rom hacks that directly used their stuff.
>C&D'd the guy who made Mario 64's first world in Unreal fairly recently
>Never C&D'd stuff like Paper Mario 3D Land or half the shit on the Mario Fan Game Forum.
>Apparently haven't C&D'd Mother 4 yet.

Nintendo seems REALLY uneven with their C&Ds.
However, I think part of the reason things like Mother 4 and Epic Paper Mario haven't gotten C&Ds is because they haven't released any downloads. They seem to be aiming to get the game finished, then post it online for free.
Once it's up like that, Nintendo can send a C&D, but it won't stop the files from spreading.
I think that should work. Basically don't give them any solid case until it's too late.

They always C&D anything that has made or has intention to make a single cent off their IP. If the YouTube video for your game has ads? C&D. If you have a donation page? C&D. If you make any money indirectly through the work (i.e. use it to promote other for-profit projects)? C&D.

Mother 4 and other fan projects get by because they explicitly state that they will never accept donations or any form of payment and the games are 100% free.

I don't see the problem with 19-21. The overlapping lines on one portion of it? That's the distance of the line mixed with the angle overlapping, it's not a perfect system but it works. If that's an issue I can just make an option to set the "gradient" to full or what it is now so it doesn't do that. Otherwise it's working as intended.
>>
>>135697660

The whole point of IP law is to stop third parties from using things you own without permission to hurt your sales. In that light, releasing a fan-made Paper Mario while Nintendo is still actively developing Paper Mario games (and has just announced a Wii U version) seems like an obvious case where you will get a C&D no matter what.

Again, I don't think it'd work as just "Paper RPG". Without the Mario structure and icons, the game's feel simply wouldn't work.
>The disjointed races would have to either be TONS of completely new beings with no recognizable history/use or something like animal races in which case the unique traits would be bound to a more human realm
>The humor and writing couldn't pull from any pre-existing knowledge (again, unless animal based) without a LOT of intricate race building stuff frontloaded before each race is worked with (which PM does, but it does it with like 1 small race that's no where else in the world at a time while filling the rest with things we already know).
>The bizarre gameplay would need to pull from something entirely new while still retaining that familiarity that somehow binds it.
I mean, sure, it's likely doable. But all of that would be more than doubling the scope of the game as now EVERYTHING needs to be introduced to the player rather than having familiar settings/characters/mechanics to instead just warp and reimagine.

I think I could write/make a great Paper Mario RPG. I don't think I could do the same with an entirely new IP.

Suicide is restricted to mentally ill people. If you attempt to kill yourself, you are by definition mentally ill.
You can suffer from a limited mental illness, and for a short period of time, but you are ill non the less.

Its kind of like saying not all mass murderers are mentally ill. Yes, they are. By committing mass murder they prove it, healthy people dont mass murder. Healthy people dont suicide.

You just have to realize that a person can begin suffering from mental illness today at noon and recover tomorrow morning. Its not some "born with it" condition. Its the extreme end of what we'd call mood.

mental illness is something you suffer from and can drive you to suicide but not nesserily some kind of stamp you put on yourself once something happens.
there is hard science behind these things, sometimes a person that kills could live all the day of his life as a normal person without having a single psychotic episode, sometimes feelings of loneliness and injustice can be make you kill someone

Game developing is hard. There is a reason it isn't the hottest job that every schmuck jumps at. Working like this requires lifestyle changes and all but the most passionate couldn't take it. Its certainly a difficult lifestyle and will have its affects on people. I only wish the best for /agdg/, there are so many talented and wonderful people here who are risking their lives for what they love. I'll be here for /agdg/ and everyone that needs a friend.

So that person wasnt mentally ill until recently, when he became mentally ill and killed himself.

If you arent mentally ill you dont kill yourself. It just never occurs to you to do so unless you have some temporary fault, which is the mental illness.
>>
>>135700810
Not til I finish my game and accomplished something with my life first. It's tempting though. It be easier to just give up now, but life is a rogue-like, you only got one shot at it so might as well do what you can and have fun while you're at it.

>>
>>135701192

Game development is significantly lower pay than most other software dev jobs so the only people who get into it are those with a passion for games and those who are too dysfunctional to work anywhere else.

>>
>>135701305
If you come to the conclusion to kill yourself, you are mentally ill.
This is a conclusion that a healthy mind will not come to.
You may be suffering from a temporary mental illness, but you are still mentally ill.

Which is why people who come to the conclusion to kill themselves today may consider it absurd and retarded tomorrow, despite the context and circumstances being exactly the same. They recovered from their temporary mental illness.

Wanting to kill yourself is a sign that you are currently mentally ill.

I don't make games for the money because it's unlikely I'll make money at all, and almost no chance that I'll make more than I currently do at my day job.

My point was actually the opposite of what you implied. For every profitable indie game, there's a thousand that don't make anything. The market is insanely saturated. On mobile, there are 500+ new games being released every single day. On PC, there were more games released on Steam in 2015 than the previous 10 years...combined.

Most people who make games today are those who do it because they love it and those who are desperate and dysfunctional and couldn't find a job if they wanted to, because it's a horrible business venture for those who only care about money.

So, I just spent 2 hours reading up on articles and posts from both game sites and lawyer sites about fan games and copyright and trademark and all that bull.

General rules I've figured out:
>1. No profit whatsoever
This is just obvious.
I don't even want to profit off of my Paper Mario Fan game outside of maybe some noteriety post-release, which wouldn't happen till like, years from now (I expect my pace will drop substantially when I get to actual asset/story production).

>2. Don't hype the game before release
MLP: Fighting is Magic, the Chrono Trigger fan games, and Streets of Rage Remake all got taken down shortly before their major release dates cause they got such a big boost in hype and came under the radar.
Meanwhile, you got other stuff that released, then got C&D'd and took down their files afterwards, but the files were already out there and nothing more could be done.
I don't think I should ever make a production blog for this project. However,

>3. Don't give them a target.
I may still be able to host progress in some ways.
Of course, posting on /agdg/ with progress updates should be completely safe unless Nintendo finds out, then goes into the /vg/ archives to find my posts and somehow tracks them back to my IP and then from there get my contact information. But that seems a bit unlikely.
Similarly, I may be able to post and get potential feedback from forums if I use a fake email with no personal information. If they don't get my name or any link to my regular email/address, I believe I'm technically in the clear. Not 100% on that one though, so may not do that.
Another possible way I can get more direct feedback while being sneaky about shit would be to post my progress as "fan art" on deviantart or something.
Again, with false information of course. Paper Mario The Rewind Chronicles/Countdown to Chaos never got any kind of C&D cause companies don't go after deviantart as far as I know.

The last one is the most important, imo. Don't put a real name on it until after release. Make them struggle to even find an email to send a cease and desist to. You can be untouchable so long as you keep your distance legally. Honestly, not one fan game has ever had to shut down, devs only do it because they wanted something out of it that they could not get legally, like money or recognition.

Even if we accept that 90% of released games are garbage, the 10% of quality releases on Steam in 2015 still outnumber previous years 10:1.

Any way you look at the statistics, it's hard to ignore the reality that the demand for new games hasn't grown at the same rate as the supply of new games. The number of sales has plateaued while the number of products keeps increasing year after year. It's not a coincidence that studios are moving towards rapid development cycles (Early access), secured funding/pre-order models (Crowdsourcing), or simply slashing production costs to stay profitable.

This time its much more about just trying to make up for not keeping my word during Demo Day 2. I got burnt out and quit before peoples demos got played. If someones game gets worse after having video data to draw from of someone other than them playing their game then they have only themselves to blame and it would be a pretty impressive achievement.

The idea in programming is that you, being the 'programmer', design and implement a system that fits YOUR needs - the 'best' system depends completely on what kind of levels you have and how you want to use them. If you don't want to learn to decide yourself what's the best way to implement shit, you'll be better off with some other approach.

That being said, you should probably read blog posts discussing stuff instead of tutorials - get the ideas, not the details. The details are trivial after a while anyway.

Again, it'd be noteriety post release. I would keep it on the down low until the game was released, at which point I'll put my name on it. At which point I'll certainly get a C&D and remove the download.
Hopefully it'll have been good enough to have been picked up by others and circulate through either torrents or something like mega.

>the only games that anyone can make exclusively for fun are either short or shitty
Minecraft started off as an independant project Notch worked on while he worked for King. Classic was the developmental build released completely for free and it expanded from there.
In a more direct example however, DOTA. DOTA was made initially by one dude making the scenario with mod tools, then updating it after new mod tools came out. After that point, other independant developers expanded the mod not for profit, but for fun.

Then you got other stuff like Super Mario Crossover or Mother 4.
A game made exclusively for fun CAN be substantial if real effort is put into it.

Haven't posted progress in a while...

Working on a turn based RPG about video game characters escaping their games. They live on an emulation/rom hosting server, but the server is going to be shutdown soon. So you and bunch of other characters have to team up to find a way off the server or something.

This is the intro I'm playing with at the moment. You start as the main character of some terrible food-company-advert platformer game. Then you get "rescued" from your game.

Need to think of a better name for the fake game / fake game company though.

They have standard female crazy, but cranked up to 12

They don't want to have sex anymore after because their genitals don't even work properly (assuming they haven't mutilated them which is worse and also gross)

No one would ever let you adopt a child even if you had just dated a trans person in the past, much less let a trans person adopt

It's only a performance hit if you're calling it every frame. It's easily fixed with caching/pooling.

Fun is a bad buzzword.
You want engagement, game feel, entertainment, fulfillment, challenge, etc. Those are good buzzwords.

I wish I was on a team or had a gamedev buddy so I'd be accountable to someone that isn't me.

Non-gamedev people are useless for this.

Some people are extremely excited by mundane real life shit.

Much like other escapism, they perhaps want to explore it further. Like for a farm simulator, they might want to ride equipment they don't have / aren't allowed to use. Perhaps do some dumb things like bonking into walls and going onto terrain the vehicles don't normally allow.

I'm sure there are those that just get off on doing everything 100% normally/efficiently, though (because they don't even work on a farm, etc)

Just don't do it every frame. Also, it's probably good practice to create a gameobject var and manually point to the gameobject you need with the gui whenever you can.

Fun means different things to different people.
What makes simulation games fun to fans of simulation games? What are things that simulation game fans enjoy? Once you understand that then you can identify the ways in which simulation games cater to those tastes.
>>
>>135711048
You get to learn about how real life things work and simulate the experience of doing a real thing you'll never be able to do. Many commercial pilots play military aircraft simulation games because they get to experience what it would be like to pilot a military aircraft during wartime, something they would never be able to do in reality.

Yeah I just mean I don't really like the no-aliasing art. It works only with high quality sprites for games running on low resolutions (like the nintendo DS rpgs).

I'll try to downscale all of my sprites back to their original scale, oh boy is this going to take a shit load of time.

Why are the sprites so incredibly large for such a low-res game? They're large and doing nothing with the extra resolution space.

I tried having a "click the screen in some direction to move" thing but it was a bit awkward and there would have to be another button to enable panning.
