The Vive never had anything said about its price till it was announced and it was $800.

Put that together with all the good press the PSVR has actually gotten with people saying how good it is and some more bigger games like Ace Combat and Gran Turismo having support, it will be big.

A few months back I made a post explaining why a mid-gen upgrade would be plausible on this gen. I wished I saved it. Anyways, Sony making a stronger PS4 is smart for many reasons:

-We're reaching the stage where PS4 games don't look impressive anymore. Sony can't stand to have their games look similar to smartphone games, especially when everyone owns a smartphone these days and can access such games with ease.

-x86 architecture means easy transition between PS4 and PS4K games. The same game could be running 60 fps on PS4K with a simple 30 fps lock on vanilla PS4. It's very easy to implement, no more harder than optimizing a PC game for two different GPUs of the same brand.

-NX is coming out. And NX is most likely going to have similar specs as PS4. With the PS4K, Sony can maintain their image as PS4 being the strongest console on the market. They'll also steal a lot of attention that NX would've gotten by basically launching PS4 again.

-PS4 would never last a full gen like PS3 did because PS3 was beast of a machine when it launched. PS4 was always modest hardware, even at launch. By releasing PS4K, they also make sure the PS4 gen lasts longer so games don't look painfully outdated in 2018-2019. This is a neccessary method of injecting more life into the PS4.

-All PS4K games will be fully compatible with PS4. Same way apps work on numerous versions of iPhone with higher-end version having better graphics.

Now, the bigger question is, will Sony have a solution for people with vanilla PS4 to upgrade? Because as far as I know, there exists no practical external GPU solutions. And another question is, can added GPU really do that much for the PS4 when in many cases it's the CPU acting as bottleneck?

Each time there is a generation leap, publishers will have to make a risk assessment if the new gen with unpredictable install base is worth supporting. For PS4, their risk assessment was that it wasn't worth it and therefore PS4 third-party taking a good while before it got geared up properly. Japan especially was very hesitant on PS4.

Sony is looking for a solution that makes these jumps less risky for publishers. I predict that PS4 will run all PS4K games whereas only PS4K might play PS Whatever Comes Next games.That way, upgrades become less risky for publishers as they have the larger install base from the previous gen to rely on aswell. But by slowly phasing out the older models, they also ensure some technical progress.

This is good for gamers aswell since we won't need to suffer launch dry seasons anymore. The issue of poor CPU remains though. CPU is much harder to scale than GPU.

Very few games is going to natively render games in 4K. Pretty much only 2D indie games. Most games will have a variable resolution ranging from 1080p to 4K, with most games closer to 1080p than 4K. Even High-end GPUs are struggling with above-1080p resolutions.

If they said that PS4K was just the old one with better AA, no casual would care. But 4K has marketing power. In practical terms, it will mean 1080p 60 fps, which is fine. Depends on the quality. I think you can find €500 42" tvs. Is it worth it though? Even if this rumor is true the 4k games will look like shit or youìll still have 1080p games at 60fps. If you really have to buy a new tv get a cheap decent 1080p one and get a 4k one in 3-4 years.
