Developing console versions with embezzled funds and BURN GDC edition

>Can the game be considered a full release?
No, for all intents and purposes, KSP should be considered still in early access state. The game is nowhere near being able to stand on its own legs both from a gameplay perspective (career mode is definitely not ready and balanced) and a stability perspective. There are still major bugs and memory leaks that shouldn't exist on a finished game.

>Are there big issues with the game?
Bugs and instability are still real and frequent problems, as with every product still in beta. Ask in thread for details.

>What are the devs doing?
Modified versions of popular mods are being included in the stock game while the game engine is being upgraded to its latest version. The next major update (1.1) is supposedly going to bring a complete overhaul of the GUI, be 64bit friendly, have a refined physics/heating/aero model and generally perform better. An external team with heavily questionable experience (Flying Tiger Entertainment) is being tasked with porting the game to PS4, XboxOne and Wii U. They seem to be rushing for an imminent deadline and they are also working on a version of the game that will be obsolete in a few weeks/months.

>Should I buy the game?
KSP is very enjoyable at first, then it usually needs to be modded to retain some sort of longevity, but doing so may dramatically decrease the stability of the game. You will be very familiar with the word "Oops!". The Developers, Squad, have shown many times that they can't handle the project and are trying to squeeze all the money they can with the least amount of effort and with controversial PR tactics. The general consensus at /kspg/ is that you should torrent the game, not because the game itself is unplayable, but because most of us agree that Squad does not deserve your money.

Your honor, it's clearly the case that the developers always openly invited piracy to the extent they could within the forums they were speaking. For you see, they knew they would never be able to complete a finished, marketable game, so instead they took in all donations as profit and then worked as charity for five years, slicing off little pieces of corporate profit as paychecks and bonuses and contracts no lawyer ever laid eyes on.

You see, they are still working on faith -- faith that money will continue pouring in the bank, and that, your honor, is what makes Squad's use of tax shelters, misappropriation, deception, malfeasance, embezzlement and fraud totally legal. KSP was never meant to be a finished game.

Not enough info to call it yet but I can already feel the lack of QA clusterfuckery on the console versions

Sure is ironic a game developed within a new economic model designed to allow transparency and openness between developers and early investors has led to a incomplete version being developed on a console in complete secrecy with no input from the fanbase on differentiation between pc and console and no use of the fanbase to beta test the early versions even though the game itself was borne out of the idea that fans and early investors should be kept in the loop and involved.

And as long as we're pointing out mental discontinuities, let's examine exactly how FT's business model could possibly work.

Either they are being paid a flat fee for the conversion, or they have been promised a percentage of the profits from the console versions. In fact, the second verison is the only possibly legal one, as if they were paid a flat fee for the conversion, Squad would be double dipping on profits by making the PC funders fund the console versions.

So, let's assume they get a percentage of the profit and are working "for free" (which we know isn't true based on the length of time 1.1 has taken and their casual admittances that the devs have spent time working on 1.1)

If FT were working on this legal model, we would have seen or heard from them by now, as they would have a vested interest in promoting the game so they can maximize profit.

Any anons wanna tell me what I'm missing here?

Often times in other boards a "age, sex, job, salary" thread pops up and there are usually a few people that always accuse the OP of being some kind of data miner.

Simple. Verizons smart cookies, or whatever the hell they're called, tracked you no matter what, even on an Argentinian basket weaving discussing website, such as 4 chan...

They've been doing it for years, look it up...

Just imagine all the other hands your data passes through, and how many companies pay to see what you do, just to display you targeted adds.

And then take solace in the fact that you don't even see those adds, because you use adblock.

You do use adblock, don't you?

Doesn't explain how someone could rack up valuable data by being on one end of a thread where people from all over the world can post and possibly say all kinds of bullshit.

Your cookie scenario would work if you are being tracked on your own computer, but how would that work from OP's side? How can OP (even assuming OP is posting as an employee of a big comms firm) make sure that the things people write are true and verifiable?

I don't know, it seems to me that your idea raises more questions than it answers

>Doesn't explain how someone could rack up valuable data by being on one end of a thread where people from all over the world can post and possibly say all kinds of bullshit.

doesnt matter if its bullshit or not, an IP is an IP. so if they can target that IP with ANY kind of data that they might be interested in, its worth money. http://www.dslreportscom/shownews/Concern-Arises-Over-Verizons-New-Sneaky-Stealth-Cookie-131034

>but how would that work from OP's side? How can OP (even assuming OP is posting as an employee of a big comms firm) make sure that the things people write are true and verifiable?
OP wouldnt give a shit if its right or wrong. its still data to sell tagged to an ip. or in worst cases, a UIDH.
and dont even think that just one company is doing this.

eh, people die in my line of work, but only due to mistakes. heard of a guy a few years back that repsonded to a call to down lines at night or some shit. the guy was setting up his truck to fix the problems, and his truck came into contact with power. being that our shit isnt insulated (from power) the truck became energized, and therefore found him as the path of least resistance.

consequently it blew his feet off. he is lucky to have survived.

yep. just like everything else on the internet, always question it. even me...

oh, i should note, that room 641a shit... my crew and i once went to install a fiber optic cable into a bank from two directions once (whats called a ring) and were unable to push it into the building through the pipe all the way. hours later, the bank manager reluctantly let a single man into a room (supervised) not on any drawings to take the fibers in, and then pass them through to the room they were supposed to go to.

Let me be a fucking smartass and tell you.

Everytime you charge your handy or laptop using a charging cable you use wireless eletricity.

The electricity from your plug has to go through a transformator and goes through a coil. That coil is next to another coil and "sends" it's electric energy into the other coil, without any wires connecting them. So the connection is wireless, but with a wire connecting both end.

imagine a coil of wires, next to another coil of wires, and then charge one side with ac voltage.
because of inductance, the uncharged side coil of wires will be electrified with power now.
its how power gets trasmitted to your home, the top wires (usually around 7k volts, low amps) are fed into a transformer (grey round can atop some poles)...
this intro voltage is in a coil inside the transformer. and the output coil is much more tightly wound, which steps down the voltage, but ups the amperage.
it is quite possible to create this same effect on a flat surface, as it has been possible for years to steal power from the power company just by laying one (or a few) extension cords directly parallel to the power lines above. although nowadays they can catch the gaps with the RFID meters, so its kinda pointless...

inductance is a helluva thing...

Good and evil might as well be fictional. Morality is relative, just like everything else in this crazy universe. Now that we have the capability to end our own species, it's pretty plain that we need to kick this can as far as we can. There are no guarantees another species will ever leave this planet. It may well be that neither will we, and our only legacy will be the machines we create.

Requesting Scott Manley in a convenience store in L.A.

>he doesn't have a .txt file with all the copypastas on it

I saw Scott Manley at a convenience store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be an asshole and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Snickers bars in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by hulloing really loudly.

Squad told us there would be deltaV metres in the VAB in 1.0. Another lie.
>>
>>135493396
How hard is to make that when you buy/update/pirate the game Kerbal Engineer is inside the gamedata folder? They don't have to do anything, it's already done.
>>
>>135493527
Apparently too hard.
>>
>>135493527
Probably licensing reasons and not wanting to pay for a mod that shows data that is already calculated in game.
So it all comes down to weird commercial or scope-related issues, because the game already calculates deltaV, they just need to make it so it shows on screen

Yep. Squad doesn't own any of that code. The KSP Edu team has a contract to redistribute KSP bundled with their own closed-source addon.

The issue isn't that it's difficult to build a dV meter, it's that Squad have made a gameplay choice to withhold that information for fear of turning KSP into a numbers simulator like Orbiter (one of Harv's favourite games).

KSP unique selling point has always been seat-of-the-pants, "try, fail, adjust, retry" gameplay based on something close to real-world physics. Squad walk a difficult line as they try to add features and realism to that mix, trying to add depth without saddling new players with complexity up front. The new aerodynamics system is a good example of this: The simulation is much improved by its inclusion, but new players have no idea why their rockets flip at 12km. On the other side we have the resource system. It's hidden away late in the tech tree and can be ignored by people who don't want the complexity. It can afford to be much more realistic than it currently is.

tl;dr, they should make an unlockable dV meter.
>>
>>135498552
And Squad is fraud :^)

That's what I said, the code is already there, the game already calculates deltaV (the only visible instance being the burn metre when you set up manoeuvres) but they deliberately choose to hide that information.

Just like they deliberately chose the unity engine so they could have something to blame for their inadequacies? Or the way they deliberately didn't keep Bac9 on as creative director? How about the deliberateness of 1.1 taking 8 months or the deliberateness of adding exploding buildings and bomb bays? And don't forget how they deliberately cancelled resources.

Squad is a master game maker and this is all part of their plan. 1.1 will truly amaze us all at how you can spend 8 months working on something only for its optimization to decrease another 30%

Early Access title rankles on consoles:

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, Recent reports indicate that Monkey Squad's Kebab Spess Program has caused mass riots across the globe, as angry consumers demand a full return of the money in exchange for having the digital download wiped from their machines.

Console companies Sony and Playstation have issued statements that no refunds will be provided even if proof of deletion is provided, as it violates their policy.

Nintendo corp, on the other hand, having been sold the right to market the "DEFINITIVE" version of the game, has issued a statement that they are disappointed in Monkey Squad's intention to sell an incomplete proof-of-concept as a finished game, and they will be offering full refunds to everyone who purchased it and making it available for free on the nintendo store.

Squad, when reached for comment, stated that "I don't handle press talk to Kasper." And when the non-squad representative known as Kasper was finally tracked down, he said that "Squad hasn't even paid me for the past two years of work, and I'm still a consultant." Kasper gave us the information of one Adrian Goya, who when contacted, could not be understood over the sounds and screams of the raging sex tourism industry in Thailand.

Amidst accusations that Squad never even planned to finish their proof-of-concept developed within a false paradigm, they have begun taking down their online presence on the Steam store, GoG, Curse, Amazon and more. As of the writing of this piece,

Kerbalspaceprogram.com just loads endlessly, but sources indicate this might be the default behavior, no one's really sure.

I don't know, a single motor doesn't give you much room to go crazy with robotics for example.
Chances are the motor is geared for high torque and low speed to move heavy ass garage doors, also precision will be non existent (it's probably not a stepper motor)
Really, there is not much you can do with that motor alone.

You can use it to power some kind of R/C car/robot though, that's really the only good application I can think of
>>
>>135546275
high torque motors are the only good motors, the second you need a gearbox your diy project is dead
>>
>>135546545
But that motor probably has a gear reduction inside already.

It's probably good as a piece of a bigger project, but it's not going to do much alone, unless you want to make a comically overpowered desk fan

No lad, it's not necessarily an integer, so "between 1 and 10" is still a good description. Based on the context of the original statement I suspect it's a pretty low number of fucks though.

Soft sci-fi fags don't give a shit. Fans go on the outside of the ship because it looks cool, floors always have gravity so you can walk around, engines are an oversized V12 mounted in the crew space attached to a blue glowing block on the outside.
>>
>>135650981
You do know those ships are capable of atmospheric flight?

You do have a point though. When it comes to rote concept art, typically it's the difference between someone who knows what they're drawing, and some kid who got decent at drawing and then decided to make concept art for their life.

Oh yeah I'm sure the dozen or so atoms of hydrogen they pick up from vacuum is totally worth it.

Just because they added a shitty excuse for their shitty design afterwards for them doesn't mean they make sense.
>>
>>135651779
Oh no, I wasn't implying it made sense, but at least there's a reason for it. Kinda.

A better in lore explanation would be LACE capabilities during atmospheric flight. That's be fairly easy to handwave away the more technical side of.
>>
>>135651413
I'm well aware of the capabilities of Star Citizen's ships. Having fans on the front is even worse when taken in that context. It's stupidly unaerodynamic in atmospheric flight, and for hydrogen gathering it actively shields the intake from capture, both blocking and deflecting anything approaching it.

>implying lampshading makes everything ok

It's an attempt to bestow a visual quality. It's got a place in art. Just not everywhere. But on the surface of a render of a space station? Absolutely.

You can't fucking expect an artist to know all the same shit we know. I mean, I do, but I'm the only illustrator among all the ones I know that conceivable could draw everything with a purpose in situations like this.

The purpose of art is, to a certain extent, to deceive the viewer.

Greeble is a decades old trope of fictitious spacecraft design that people have grown to accept due to its ubiquity, in much the same way they accept that non-atmospheric spacecraft should look like either ships or aircraft with wings, and floors to walk about on.

The mixture of high- and low-frequency detail is what gives them a sense of purpose, rather than being a loose grouping of similarly-sized pipey bolty things attached over every surface.

...so... well done greeble?
>>
>>135661307
A big thing about design that a lot of artists who over-rely on "greebly" detail is the overall form of the the thing they're designing. Let's take some things always used as examples when talking about greebling, the Star Destroyer and the Millenium Falcon. They are covered in greeble but the basic shape of them both is iconic as fuck. But bad artists think it's the greeble that makes things look cool, and then you end up in Michael Bay Transformers territory, especially in motion.

This, this exactly.
>>
>>135661890
Using it tastefully and not overdoing it is what good artists do.

What I don't like (and have said a few times since I fucking hate it so much) is bad artists overdetailing every fucking surface with all sorts of garbage.

a bigger problem is star citizen ships aren't aerodynamic/capable of stable atmospheric flight and have the shitty VTOL landing system.

VTOL is a cop out in sci-fi. it's just used because they don't want to have a big airfield or taxiing or etc, rather just a magic fucking carpet.

Exactly. Rushing head-first into a design without the bare minimum of knowledge of what the major components of what you're designing do is what I object to. If you at least know that your elephant has four legs, your plen has wings and your rocket doesn't, you're not going to have to spacefill with the artistic equivalent of "tl;dr".

Eh, sometimes they do an acceptable job handwaving it, like the ship uses its RCS for the actual VTOL and still relies on aerodynamic lift and thrusters outside of a short hovering maneuver.
Where they get the powerful RCS then becomes the issue instead, but considering how they have ion thrusters producing several Gs worth of thrust with specific impulse in the millions that work both in and out of atmosphere...
It only becomes a problem when they insist on bringing their entire aircraft carrier - sized spaceship down onto the ground in the first place. Good scifi has atmospheric shuttles instead and just park the big ship in orbit.

Elite at least gives lip-service to craft design: The chunky, angular ships aren't a million miles away from current hypersonic craft. The weapon bay doors on craft like the sidewinder are just painful though.
>sure, we'll just let this visibly thin sheet of metal be the forward hull. Things will move about internally in space-inefficient ways because animated poppy outy robo guns are cool guise!

No it doesn't, they're throwbacks to the original games that ran on computers less powerful than a potato.

This. It's the equivalent of building your aircraft carrier to pop out tank tracks and drive up on land when it reaches its destination. Dedicated space craft have little reason to be built for landing. You could, but it would be bad at both, and pointlessly complex and expensive.

eh, true.. still with regards to star citizen, some have pointed out(in other threads and other sites) that quite a few of the ships are un-aerodynamic in such a manner that they would basically fall apart at anything close to transonic speeds. (that and they look fucking retarded).

Now I think a good thing to hope for is Rogue System, though I'd need to see more of their ship designs in order to tell.

The original 1984 game was drawing inspiration from the hypersonic craft both planned and flown at the time. But hey, I'm willing to believe it's just dumb luck that the polygonal, blunted rear craft designs that were the simplest and most recognisable happened to bear some resemblance to real-world hypersonic craft designs.
