Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Two modding questions which come to mind after reading the MA Man discussion in previous thread.

Is it possible to:
1) give a unit philosopher ability with negative value? Man has monks and while Ora et Labora motto was specifically a Benedictine thing, focus on manual labor, study and general productivity was common to pretty much all western monastic movements.
2) make a unit recruitable only when a province has a specific scale? I know Ragha does it with some mages and Zhayedans (Heat/Cold), but I'm thinking about Knights of Avalon and Magic. Them being forest recruit in summod is kinda dumb, considering they're riding on fucking unicorns and it's not magic-creatures-everywhere EA. Having unicorns in every forest means that your forests are, well, magical.
>>
Hey, how do we all feel about Perpetual Storm to ground some Bats. Thinking about casting it in retaliation for AC, want to know if anyone will mind.

(Can't cast it yet, but for when I do if AC is still up)
>>
>>135305972
They are not common here in Germany either, but I bought one off amazon for 50 bucks. Installation took 20 minutes.
>>
>>135306526
Philosopher ability?
>>
>>135306526
1. You can't give a unit Philosopher to begin with. It's not a modding command.

2. Only works with hot/cold scales.
>>
>>135306538
Perpetual Storm is perfect since it's obviously and strongly much worse for bats than anyone else, but also reduces income worldwide which is good for Lemuria relative to everyone else.
>>
>>135306526
1)I'm not sure, would be a cool idea to try, I'll have a look asap.
2) Summod has a grudge with MA Man, due to it having some really fucking weird preprogrammed tags stopping recruitment being changed much. That sort of magic - recruit is possible the same way Therodos 's scaling recruit is possible in Summod, I think sum1won will really like your idea.
>>
>>135307073
1. I'm pretty sure you can. Some natgen nations have it. It's #slothresearch <value>.
2. That's a shame.
>>
>>135306538

That would be quite hilarious. Good luck getting the caster to live through Astral Corruption though.

Er, wait, if you have an immortal unit cast a Global, does it not dispel if they "die"?
>>
>>135307454
Th-thanks.
>>
>>135307817
It only dispels if the one lucky strike feebleminds them over every other affliction.

More on point, the overcast will need to be very high to compete with the blood globals it might bounce on.

>>
>>135308258
Kurgi is kinda weird in power.
>>
>>135308578
>kurgi
>kinda weird
>>
>>135308340
the chance of feeblemind is incredibly small, since any of the lemurs die pretty much instantly so they rarely get afflicted at all.

I'm worried about it hitting the Blood Vortex or AC slot though and failing because I can't overcast by 999
>>
>>135308258
>>135308135
Water elementals are absolutely murderous against horrors underwater, if mage can spam them he can kill doom horrors.

Blitzserver Third Test starts and Helheim and Nief are about to stale the first turn.

I think we can conclude - these tests have proved people are too stupid to realize there's a different port after the game starts and they have to input a new port, and emails for pretenders should be mandatory (as well as a game-start email).

I currently have slightly more income than bats, but the margin between you, bats, and me, is not large. With your gem income and freespawn, it's not even really a competition. Mictlan's blood economy looks equally impressive (Although he kills like 10 of my scouts a turn so it's hard to have a proper picture). Actually I think i'm the only one left in the game who needs gold, i'm sure mict could just run off slaves at this point. :doomed:

He's a great player, but those were some seriously weak indies for LA.
>>
>>135314767
He had a lot of luck with resources and province connections as well.

Honestly, 15 provinces with such start with no players or even AI to block you is really really mediocre so it doesn't actually go against "Ulm has mediocre expansion" statement.

That works too. Mostly it makes your expansion much more reliable and your early game army tougher to crack. You can count on Black Templars more than crossbows, and you're more likely to win any collisions with other players.

16 provinces year 1, including a throne.

Would have been 19 provinces except for some really bad luck with a commander getting sniped.
>>
>>135323276
yeah, I'll be interested in that eventually, but currently I'm on the B1 part of that chain so it will be awhile.
>>
>>135323821
Well, depends what maximum B you want, me making the 6B booster starts the path at 3, and also making the 5B one starts it at 2.
If something has two bodies I could make the nature/blood armour.
>>
>>135323407
Also it's worth mentioning that I didn't lose a single black templar during expansion, leaving me with an army of 41 of them.

Quickly scrape together some crossbow support and you have an intimidating army going into year 2.
>>
>>135323407
I always wanted to do that but it's entierly a suboptimal way to play I'm sure.

>Your entire nation has been destroyed by enraged dragonewts
>>
>>135336663
Your CV isn't that important (meaning the looks/tailoring part), the businesses only care about work experience in the job you're looking for, and even if you happen to have that you're gonna spend a lot of time unemployed because there will also be several other people with experience applying for it. I have several friends who both had experience and studied for the job, and still had to send over a hundred applications before getting work (and most of those didn't even end up getting work in their field). Basically to get a start you need to get incredibly lucky, or have connections through parents that can get you a job.

Just restart, kick arco and start the game with 11 players. With an AI on the board it just means whoever happened to start next to him gets free expansion after the first year and most likely a free capital. It's kind of horseshit. If we were 7 turns deep and he went AI I'd say yeah, forget about it. But since it's only the first turn I think it's easy enough to just restart and kick him.

I probably shouldn't tell this but this is just pissing me off too much. The expansion party led by my prophet attacked an indie province, nothing special, light militia, archers and a few light cavalry. My units were in 2 squads, the enemy cavalry and militia came at the first squad, the light cavalry died right away except for one which started routing, and my second squad decided to start chasing it instead of attacking the other enemies. This led to my first squad routing against the light militia (the light cavalry killed a few of them before dying) who in turn killed my prophet because the second squad was running across the battlefield chasing a single horse and thus died my prophet and his expansion party.

Cap only, this is in an O2 province, they're pretty cheap at 30g. But still, it's a three attack cavalry with W9 bless. It should be able to do better than rout some archers and beat some weaker sacreds that were already softened up by flying PD. Shouldn't it?

Oh yeah heads up everyone, Janvaldorf gets flying PD.

Of course I'm using longbows. He caught me by surprise by using actual basic tactics (he hadn't before) but if this is the strength of his units he's gonna be in for a hard time once I start doing that too. Hell, I might even start using magic soon.
>>
>>135359271
Strength nine and seven attacks mean pretty much jack and shit. Anything with half-decent protection is functionally immune until fatigue builds up.
>>
>>135359271
>poor protection
>poor damage
I dunno, that sounds about right.

It's only 3 attacks for the first hit, and even in T3 the quarterstaff only does 12 damage so that's pretty sad.

If it's fighting in O3 the quarterstaff does 6 damage and the lance does like 12 including charge bonus, so you only have one decent attack per cavalry.

If you can hold an extended melee fight they can start critting once enemies fail to hit enough times, but then you have to worry about archers ripping your 7 protection sacreds apart.
>>
>>135359271
>Janvaldorf gets flying PD.
>all those militiamen
Just how much PD did he buy?
>>
>>135360127
Enough that he could have bought a fort with the gold. It won him the battle though, and inflicted substantial casualties on me, so I guess it was a good deal for him? It's not a trade I would have made, but I guess he's better off taking a gold-for-gold loss and trying to defeat me before I start hitting research goals, since mine come first and once I get there he'll be at a substantial disadvantage until he hits Rain of Stones.
>>
>>135359271
I mean, to be fair, they cost 24 gold under turmoil 3, which I imagine someone with Daeva is running. So it shouldn't be too surprising that they're not bullshit like lizard lawnmowers.

Ya know, if Seor could afford them anyway.

Are there any guides or rule of thumbs about the preferred ratio of different terrain types in a map? I'm planning on just pulling up a bunch of maps and counting the different types myself but I'd prefer not to go through the effort if somebody else already has.

Also, any guides on map making in general? I'd like to make my own but would like to avoid any common pitfalls.
>>
>>135399858
Sum1won already did stuff to the mages in terms of cost decreases and boosts and shit.
>>
>>135398582
Let's wait until someone takes TC and Xib, since they got some buffs that should probably be tested.

Come on guys, don't you wanna play frogs?
>>
>>135402054
Someone should try bless frogs, since their poison sacreds aren't cap only now.
>>
>>135400641
If there is one I haven't found it.

Similar terrain together looks nice, but fucks people up. Too many or few province connections is another problem, lots of connections makes for more rescources and easier expansion (more choice of indies) and the inverse for a few.

Consider what flying does as well, chokepoints and so such are good but too many is annoying.

Remember caves.

Oh and you don't need to go with things which could ever possibly exist, the default x-y wrap isn't physically possible (no its not a donut, the internal perimeter and external perimeter are equidistant).

The Empire of Sarthon (used in mapmaking is hard) took me about 8 hours total, without using a tablet or being able to draw.
>>
>>135402504
Oh, wow hey I hadn't even considered hand-drawing the map and scanning it in. Might actually be better than mouse-drawing everything.

Thanks for the info. I had actually almost forgotten caves.
>>
>>135399043

I don't think their pretender cast it, but I'm way too lazy to go back and check.
>>
>>135402504
It is a donut though, the map representation is just deformed. Just like a typical world map doesn't translate very well to an actual globe.
>>
>>135403687
I mouse drew it in gimp, I do not recommend it but it does allow lots of layers and so such. Ideal would probably be tablet, and if you scan it you need to then put it in gimp to put in the province pixels (pure white) and a layer to make sure nothing else is pure white or there will be more provinces everywhere.
>>
>>135402202
I would, but I'm so supremely awful at MA Xib.
>>
How do you draw a map that wraps?
>>
>>135404018
I've been using paint.net. It has its own problems, but I'm pretty used to it by now and it's a very handy 'basic' drawing program.
>>
>>135404012
Maps would be much more screwed up if they were for a donut, projections of globes to fit as squares are shit and weird as fuck.
>>135404152
It's just ticking wrap in the map editor in game, which is the best place for finalising maps.
>>135404162
Whatever works for you, but you do need to have the pure 255 white pixels for provinces.

There's a small official mapmaking manual which is mostly the modding commands for modifying the .map file rather than the picture, allowing for things like the Erf Snekening where all indies were Erf Sneks without requiring a mod.

In photoshop you can set an offset that allows you to see how the edges of the picture come together. Set the offset to half of the picture's dimensions, turn on wraparound, fix your shit, and remove the offset when you're done.

It's under "Filter > Other > Offset..."

"Sir, Kanzou's men have been destroyed in Old Flood! The enemy advances, the scouts report!" "The garrison at Kinsu has been defeated!"
"Sir, the Dragon Kings report huge R'lyeh forces sighted in the Sea of Silences!"
"No reply from our spies in Agartha - the entire ring has gone silent and Iga Kinboshi has gone to investigate!"

Ubizou put his hand on his head. "Tohdoh.. if only Tohdoh were here. Then things would turn around." His aides did not comment, waiting for commands. Gripped by resolve, the general looked down at the map, throwing a hand wide to gesture as he began to quickly give commands. "Saizou, Kano and Kamiza are to fall back to defend the capital, and send a request to the courts of the dragon kings - ask for their aid in this time of need! And send a message to the troops under Asai - they are to advance on the enemy heartland. Tell them to burn the summer crops. Kami save us, those hermits are our only hope. Relying on a magical superweapon, in this kind of situation! ... Well, I guess it is the best that I can do. May the One God forgive me, and the Kami bless us all. If Jomon is to survive, this must be done."

>>
>>135412996
>Well, he did want to ally with me.
Because you were a threat. Agartha, Abysia, and Jomon were the three nations with a large enough territory after the expansion phase to risk running away with the game (though I don't think anyone is entirely out of the running just yet). Abysia is notoriously weak through the early/mid game and conquering Abysia's land and forts would put Jomon, already very strong, in a dominant position.Securing his border with you (as I also attempted to do with both of you) would have given him time to expand safely against other players.
>>
>>135414201
My scouts have seen him as far north as 955. His expansion was hampered a bit (it doesn't seem like he has 30+ provinces after all) but nearly as much as it hurt everyone else.

>>
>>135414717

He could be doing a 'hopping' approach, don't assume that every province in a radius belongs to him. Tunneling and hopping both result in non-regular empire shapes.
>>
>>135414717
It's Bats, who won the last game, with an even better starting position this time, and with even better starting circumstances.

It's kind of needed to stop him from just sweeping the game desu. We need to do to him what All Yesterdays did to their Xibalba (gangbang the fuck out of him)
>>
>>135414375

The plan was to spread your provinces between Ragha, Man, Agartha, and the JLF, actually. I figured from all your messages and the way you demanded I hand over provinces and stuff, that once you hit research goals suddenly you and several of my neighbours would swarm over my borders on the same turn. Given the current situation - I was right.

>>135412996

I have a lot of provinces right now from raiding Abysia (from the SEAAAAAAA), but I wouldn't call my lands fuckhuge before that. Big, but also, Jomon. And with the provinces Abysia demanded, Abysia would have been roughly the same size.

Vassili and Dotyoveski trod along the road to Jomon.

"Dot, how go the men back home? Is glorious Rodina Mat in peril?"

The Master of Names slipped into the astral plane to communicate with his brothers. A wide grin grew upon his face, the sort of maniacal grin reserved for those dedicated to the Five.

"Vassili, I see the cave-dwellers laid to waste by a glorious charge of Druzhine, I see our magics wreaking havoc on the unjust. Rus breathes a sigh of relief, Rodina Mat preserve us"

Vassili became lost in thought. He and his companion had been sent to Jomon to plead for aid against the wanton aggression of the cave dwellers and sailor scum of the coast. With help from the mysterious east, the ships of the sailors could be sunk and the caves shattered. If.

I'm shit at prose, pls ally

>>
>>135415508
Oh, man, is that what it was? Okay, total diplomatic failure on my part then, I really wasn't trying to "demand" anything other than what I'd already taken. I was sort of dressing my language up like these were orders from on high but my intent was to leave enough room in there for negotiation. Those three coastal provinces to your south were really kind of a sketchy circumstance but I'm really not sure that would have put us at an even province count. I'll have to double check that, though.

I mean, every game needs a breakdown of communication leading to war at some point. That was what I meant when I said that all of our gods claimed the world in their name so claiming unowned territory was sort of meaningless. Still, I do wish we could've been on better terms.

>several of my neighbours would swarm over my borders on the same turn.
The only reason that was possible at all was that you were taking a lot of my land and I panicked. I hadn't been able to make any diplomatic headway before then, so, thank you for that.

>>135417146
Those Pikeneers certainly helped! But yes, your state-sanctioned mob of thugs has certainly proven itself capable of pushing over retirees and native tribesmen while your actual army does the real work down south.

Spin baby, spin!

>>135417357
I find I run out steam quickly enough that I don't think I could really make it in an RP heavy game, but I would like something with more focus on writing in-character, in-game messages. That's a lot of fun for me. Even when it goes horribly awry.
>>
I'd be down to make a new game with a rule of no out of game diplo and in-character messaging strongly encouraged. I have time for another game now that I'm just about dead in one of my games.
>>
>>135417714
Maybe a game where diplo is binding and war needs to be declared?
>>
>>135417714

The pikeneers were a later addition. Low PD can really be kicked over by Sai, Tenzai, 'Little Tenzai', Sho Guu, Cyy, Tuber, and Bakem Hiyu, as I have decided their names are.

Your messages were okay, but needed to be condensed and pushing the character more. As was, they seemed a bit generic.
>>
>>135418116
I'd be down for a 'high honor' type thing, but binding diplo just encourages rules lawyering and in the best case it never comes up and in every case it does it drags the game on and gives the admin a headache.
>>
>binding diplo
>make peace with everyone
>cast astral corruption
>>
>>135418286
>>135418116

Binding diplo and declaring war and whatever just seems to reward whoever can scheme the hardest, not be fun.

What about a game where the winner is the person who gets voted as best RP after the game ends. So you're not playing to kill everyone, you're playing to be the coolest character. Your in-game actions are just to accentuate your story (although killing everyone sounds like a pretty cool story, and being ignominiously defeated is a harder sell).
>>
>>135418529
Yes. Fuck yes, publicly posted turns and the general decides the winner after X number of turns.
>>
>>135417982
>>135418116
I'm not a fan trying to draw roleplay from rules restrictions, plus all of those rules just sound like a drag. 3 turn turnaround on all communication is just too slow in a lot of cases. Binding diplo takes out a layer of wheeling and dealing that I enjoy, but I could be convinced that's counter-productive. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by war needing to be declared but I could see that as being okay. Sneak attacks are just too useful, though. Plus putting your army up on someone's border is usually as much warning as you need.

>>135418236
Yeah I was having a bit of trouble with my messages this game. I just didn't really feel like I had anything to hook into and build off of. Though usually my "character" is the nation as a whole and whoever I have signing the message is just a mouthpiece.

>>135418529
I actually kind of like this idea. It might be a bit too anti-gamey for me though, I dunno.

Marignon seems to be a busy guy. I believe already asked for extension twice and we waited for him before even starting a game. How about changing hosting interval to 36-48h? I may ask him in game if it'd help him, not sure if he follows the thread.

I have less than half the seas (a third?) and that's mostly because my cap is adjacent to a natural bottleneck, and Mari took another one. Haven't attacked R'lyeh.

Sai sniffed the air. "They come." The guttural tones of the fishman provoked an instant reaction from the rest of the group. Tenzai snatched up his long spear, the strange silvery metal flowing in his grip as he leveled it at the surroundings. The huge monstrous-looking shark man with his many piercings and faintly glowing tattoos looked like a creature of nightmare, but wore chainmail that showed the signs of diligent care, in stark contrast to the rest of the group. Wet skin, bulging eyes, and general barbarity were the order of the day, three diminutive but stocky humanoid creatures with the heads of fish and bodies of slithery blueish fish-skin, and three tall green-skinned monsters with huge clawed hands, webbing stretching between the fingers as they stretched them, and the massive eyes of deep-sea fish. The shorter fish-men - icthytids - gathered up their spears and other paraphernalia, securing the bone armour of their kind. Sai's ears were not to be underestimated, an odd trait for an icthytid, but one they had come to treasure. The shark man, ready before his fellows, looked over to one of the icthytids in particular - a longer red frill and an odd look in his eyes the only hint at the fell intelligence that lurked behind his eyes, a cunning mind the equal of any crab general that Tenzai had ever met - the Sho Guu, a chieftain amongst his own people. "How soon?" He muttered to Sai, the other icthytid replying in his own tongue. For ease, they all spoke Jomonese - the only common language among them, as even amongst the icthytids the tribal tongues varied. "Soon, but not soon." He translated, and the group readied itself to move. Tenzai held up his spear, stopping the movement. "Do we fight?" The shark-man's voice was deep, a rumbling baritone.

>>135420048

As the shark-man's beady eyes focused on their leader, he saw him hesitate. The rest of the group took him to be the most warlike amongst them, having witnessed his aloofness during camp and his utter ferocity when in battle - but they did not understand, for Tenzai did not desire war or slaughter. But neither did he fear it - he was a bushi, one of the warrior class amongst the Courts of the Dragon Kings, bred and born for war and taught to live without fear from a young age. It was incomprehensible to tribal warriors such as themselves, that one could participate in battle without it becoming part of it, but that was the purpose of the bushi's creed - to maintain their selves in the most brutal of battles, and to die with a smile. He allowed himself a smile now, at the thought, even as he knew how his teeth would look to his compatriots - for compatriots they were. Perhaps they would be viewed as barbarians or peasants by the denizens of the Courts, but the past few months in their company, hunted across the length of the land of the burning ones, had taught him to love them as family, as much as he loved himself. He had heard tales of this before - but never experienced it himself, and it scared him far more than an enemy spear or axe. The Sho Guu seemed to come to a decision. Shaking his head, he spoke in his strange way of separate syllables "No. We run. Come." Tenzai hefted his spear over one shoulder, the length of metal scraping through the leaves above. "As you say, fishman." He chuckled in his mind, but gave no sign on his mask-like face, although they all knew that any sting of insult was long past and now it was a term of camaraderie. Leading the way into the forest, Tenzai let himself settle into the waking trance, the technique developed by warriors long past to traverse long distances with minimum fatigue especially above the water's comforting embrace. It would be a long march 'ere the dawn.

The palaces of the Veliki Knyaz were nothing to the splendour that surrounded them, from the mystically glowing pearls and jewels arrayed all around the walls, to the fierce shark-men guarding the doors with halberds of gleaming gold, the strange crayfish ministers in sheer silk robes, holding staffs of effervescent crystal and bound scrolls, and there upon the dais at the centre of the room, with the sealight falling all around him from the huge skylight reclined the King of the Eastern Seas himself, a long-jawed dragon in the form of a man, but with scaled skin and a dragon's head, and burning eyes like those of a demon. Seated upon a low, wide seat, to one side and one step lower sat a Jomonese girl with long straight black hair, and on the other, a crab wearing armour, and looking wise even as it also looked like a crab, a glaive casually laid alongside it. "For what reason have you come to my court, men of the Rus?" The dragon king's sonorous tones filled the hall, and caused the crystals set into the ceiling to chime like struck bells. The urge to kneel was overpowering.

They had been brought there through the seas in a bubble of magically conjured air, upon a platform of ebony and white pearl born upon the banks of a team of shrimp-men struggling to bear them swiftly through the deeps with flicks of their powerful tails. Ubizou - the leader of the Jomonese Army - had impressed upon them that the sea strength of Jomon did not lie in it's few flimsy ships but rather the steel of the Dragon Courts - strange halfmen who lived off the coast of Jomon, and had significance in their religion.

sum1 (from Desura) - "there's an idea in the works to allow cult selection through the use of prophetshapes."

This gives me a throbbing, ROMAN erection.
>>
>>135426082
I have the general idea sketched out, but I could use specific input on what the different cults should look like.
>>
>>135426584
Which of the following ideas are mechanically feasible -
Changing mages recruitable in all forts
Changing foreign recruit units
Changing fort recruit units
Adding national spells
Adding national items

I know that changing gem income is possible and changing cap mages/troops is possible with events adding sites.
>>
>>135428201
>Changing mages recruitable in all forts
>Changing fort recruit units
Feasible using site/event modding. 4 events per site
>Changing foreign recruit units
feasible using site/event modding, though it takes up a site slot (so I'd prefer to avoid this).
>Adding national spells
>Adding national items
Very feasible, though they won't change with cult
>>
>>135428409
>Very feasible, though they won't change with cult
Right, that's what I was asking about.

For the fort recruit units/mages, will they also be able to be used if the fort gets captured by the enemy?
>>
>>135428532
One event is there to create the site while the correct prophet is active. One event is there to remove it once he is not. One is to remove the site if the fort is destroyed. One event is to remove the site if the fort is captured.
>>
The simple fix is to make a national spell that summons mages and units and make it castable by a guy with the right paths and 3 holy paths, aka a prophetized cult guy. It also makes a lot of sense with the 'focused around a central leader' theme of cults in general. Every turn getting 3 good mages and 30 good troops would both be less scalable (aka more advantageous for a smaller nation, less advantageous for a large) and more interesting than just changing recruitable units.
>>
>>135429357
If you bring a prophet back to life he'll be a mummy with the same paths, and there are holy boosters.
>>
>>135429850

The holy boosters are artifacts, and the mummy thing is damned hard for Pythium to do, requires HoF membership, death magic, research. You could also find indie high priests and empower them in whatever and hand them an artifact. Both of those sound hard enough to justify just letting them have it.

But you're right, just make a set of unique summoning spells that don't let you do more than one of them, that summon a single unique guy who domsummons these units or can cast a h5 spell to get the mages or whatever.
>>
>>135430252
Actually, having thought about it, make one spell which summons a GENERICUS which transforms via event into whichever cult's thing.
>>
>>135430252
>>135429850

Imagine a pythium with bigger, sexier, more thematic cult-based mages and units, like assassins, heliodromii that sacrifice bulls to cast Fanaticism and ascend to a fiery form that autocasts Heat From Hell when they die, serpent cult assassins that autocast Foul Vapours and drop vipers into the rooms of the powerful, Renata who transcend death upon the sacred river and pour the black blood of their goddess upon the earth as a sacrifice and a blessing and grant death weapons to all troops, theurgs who awaken the powers of old and attract huge amounts of acolytes to learn the skills of the communion, Leos with burning swords and burning hearts, Epoptes who domsummon forest creatures and gain the awe of the dryads long past, or even legionarius legatii who re-institute the systems of the ancient Ermorian order and whose new maniples are stronger and drenched in the power of a steel that even ulm has to respect. That's (probably not) what will go into the mod.

Each cult would have an allied cult, fort recruitable, but without priest ranks the way renata and renatus are. They should also have their own big cap-only StR mage, with paths based on the serpent priest i.e. 2 primary 1 secondary and randoms. The different cult should also change the sacred unit, the renatus sacred could be an anti-undead unit with an undead secondshape, the solar bull could have sacred, trampling bull-riders, the revelers could have berserk on bless ecstatic dancers, and the mystes could have better armed and armored vestals with recuperate.

>Phoenix Power, Summon Lesser Fire Elemental x3
When summoning elementals, you want to get a large group of them to prevent them being surrounded. If you don't have a decent number of fire mages (I'd say at least 6, preferably more like 12) your fire elementals will not perform well. Trapping your fire elementals behind a line of slow-moving troops might help bunch them up, if so you could use less mages.

If you can't reliably force a fight I wouldn't use them either. 3 lesser fire elementals is 3 gems per mage, and that gets very expensive if your enemy can trigger gem usage a couple times before each actual fight. They're best used on defense, where you can choose when and where you're fighting.

If you have lots and lots of fire gems you could use them offensively anyway, but I'm sure you could find a better use of fire gems than throwing them away like that.

I'd also like to point out that a small group of fire mages summoning elementals is good for taking PD (though I've only used size 6 elementals, dunno how size 3 will compare) or lightly defended provinces. If you don't need your fire mages in the main army, you could have them do that.

>Fireball x5
Only if you don't have phoenix power. The reduced fatigue and increased damage from F3 is great.

Fireball, Phoenix Power, Fireballx3 might be worthwhile if enemy has resistance buffs and you have turn 1.

>Phoenix Power, Fireball x4
Generally good, use it whenever.

Okay. My question was poorly phrased.

What do they do in between? There's a long way from Ench 5 to Conj-9-via-Const-6-and-Thau-4.
>>
>>135489930

Bane fire? Thats evo6. Wraith lords and assorted D summons are conj5-7 also liches in ench8.

There are usual D spells like darkness rigor mortis and stuff like that which work great with undead based armies.

DN are good summon paths that also open up SWA for you which gives you FEDAWS to play with as Machaka.
>>
>>135489930

Evocation 6 for Blade Wind, Bane Fire, Magma Eruption, Shadow Blast, Falling Fires... etc. You have top tier evokers. Between that and Ench5 you get pretty much all the tools you need to march to Conj9. Stop in for Construction 4-6 somewhere along the way.

The options are that or a randomly generated map. It's starting to frustrate me that apparently fucking nobody makes balanced maps according to this thread but I don't actually know a lot of different map. Please, please offer a suggestion.

I don't know what makes Leaking Land so bad, though. It looks fine superficially. I mean maybe the caves could have more connections to the rest of the map.

I'd greatly prefer a random map, as long as you check it for egregious bullshit and flag as no-start the worst provinces.

If we wanna go with a premade map, off the top of my head I'd say Plane of Rusty Nails or Realm or Roaring Rhinos (cave versions, of course).

>Plane of Rusty Nails or Realm or Roaring Rhinos
Fine maps but too big for 9-10 players, no?
>>
>>135492765
Leaking Land does not wrap horizontally. Starting on the edge of the map significantly limits your expansion options.
>>
>>135493704

>>
>>135493704
It might limit your options but it also makes defending a hell of a lot easier since you can concentrate your forces on a much smaller area (it does also screw up cap centric nations something fierce)
>>
>>135493704
The number of province connections is still fairly consistent and there's enough of them that losing one direction shouldn't be that big of a deal. You just get to focus the same number of troops in a little over half the number of directions. You'll still end up with the same number of provinces unless you get really, really unlucky with the types.
>>
>>135493704
Even if starting on the edge does give a worse expansion, you have to deal with fewer nations and have much more secure borders.

I've had both situations happen to me, and starting with a poor position is way less of an issue than getting stuck in the middle with far too many daggers at your back.
>>
>>135493548
Rhinos might be, but Nails is 14-16 provinces per player, which is fine.

>>135493704
>>135494434
>>135496641
In my opinion the problem with a map like Leaking Land is that nations that don't start on the edges are have a way harder time defending their borders compared to those who do.

The only way to avoid that in a non-wrap map is to let all players spawn on the edges of the map.

Yeah, starting on an edge is definitely an advantage, not a disadvantage, and it especially benefits people with a strong early game, whether due to skill or build.

Expansion really isn't hampered that much by having fewer directions to expand in, and all it takes is for you to diplomancy one person into being your friend for a little while, et voila, you can slowly roll over everything.

>The only way to avoid that in a non-wrap map is to let all players spawn on the edges of the map.
I think you could deal with this by having provinces be larger at the edges of the map, and adding more connections per province compared to the center.

That would (hopefully) make it hard to stick near the edge of the map (few provinces there) and additional province connections would increase the number of neighbors and make it harder to defend your holdings.

Another possible way to deal with it is 'ports' that allow travel between two distant provinces, like in galadia. Theme them as teleportation gates or something if it isn't a water-based map. Overuse of that leads to a confusing map so you'd need to be careful.
>>

I don't see how this would solve the fact that "edge-nations" have way less borders to defend, and probably need to do so against fewer enemies than nations spawned in the center.
At best it'd make them weaker, ulteriorly unbalancing the various start locations.

Or were you agreeing with me on making everybody start on the edges, and providing an incentive to expand towards the center?

>Another possible way to deal with it is 'ports' that allow travel between two distant provinces
Either you use them sparingly, and it gets very choke-pointy, running in the same issues as before, or you use a lot of them, essentially doing a different kind of full-wrap.

That said, I really like this kind of "teleporters".

One thing I'm actually really enjoying about Oeridia so far (and won't shut up about) is the interesting topology created by all the different extra movement provinces. It makes the actual shape of your nation a lot more complex with respect to its number of borders and the places on the map that you can access.

The map is not the best implementation of just about anything, but that is the sort of thing I'd like to see more of.
>>
Admin, do you intend to use the map you uploaded? If so, you might want to add more traversable connections to the caves. Especially to the one accessible only from a single sea province.

Any chance of a full-wrap map, admin? As discussed abovethread, a partial wrap is not the most balanced choice.

Also, if we end up using this one I'm gonna stale turn 1, just joking, you need to give some caverns a few more connections. There's at least two 1-connection ones.

Here, have an example picture. Pretend the center is full of provinces at a similar size.

Having any of the outer provinces puts you into contact with a large number of the inner provinces as well as 2 outer provinces. So the outer provinces are never really secure, even if you have a really large empire.

You'd probably want to nostart the outer edge.

So I am newish and I am playing a game as LA ulm. My midgame strategy was spamming vampires (to use for blood hunting and as defensive thugs) and illuminati for research, and my late game strategy is to roam around with a huge master enslave communion or two.

I have never used a communion before, and I wanted to know if I got this right (don't want to just throw away 20 mages for nothing).

If I have two S4 mages (second tier with skullcap and coin) as the master (and also a black priest thrown in for Earthpower reinvigoration), with 16 S1 slaves, that will bring my 2 masters up to S8. And if I use ~25 slaves (in case some of them get sniped) then both S2 masters can both spam master enslave 5 times without anyone dying (200*2*5 /25 < 100), and can then be ordered to stop casting so the slaves can start spamming star fire or whatever?

Sounds good?

Also, besides flying 20 vampires into a friendly-dominion province and spamming Horde of Skeletons or Summon Lammashtas, what can I use my vampires for?

Script retreat as the last command. Or bring more slaves, or fewer masters. Or give the slaves heavy doses of reinvigoration.

But mostly just assume the slaves will die in any fight going more than 15 rounds. Masters don't give a fuck.
>>
>>135524364
I wish there was a "preserve communion slaves" setting just like there's a "preserve gems" setting...
>>
>>135523347
Try hearts of life, the chest wound encumbrance doesn't matter on communion slaves, so you just get the reinvigoration.
>>
>>135524364
You could also order the masters to fire a ranged weapon (but they'll become sort of useless after the first 5 turns).

Also, since you have B, don't forget Reinvigoration. If you want to cast it after turn 5, have a B mage outside the communion fatigue himself out in the first three turns, and as the last two spells script him to Sabbath Master>Reinvigoration. Unless there's battlefield-wide fatigue spells flying around, it should work.

This might be a retarded question, but is the main purpose of Tartarian Gate to just summon shitloads of SC chassis?
>>
>>135529565
The main advantage is that you get maximum magic diversity for your lategame and some potentially awesome casters. The fact that they also make good SC chassis is just a bonus IMO.
>>
>>135529565
It's more about their magic paths than anything else.
Tartarian titan can roll up to 7 in any single path and that's amazing. Cyclops have built in ros capability.
As a whole tarts can break you into all kinds of paths, crosspaths and magic you don't already have or would love to have more.
And as a bonus they can be used as SCs. With some luck you can roll perfect paths for it.
>>
>>135529565
You need gift of health to really make the most of it, since most of them will be feebleminded or have some other affliction that stops them from working out as anything other than tough and cheap meatshields. If you do have all the infrastructure necessary, they're some of the best summonable mages in the game.
>>
>>135530560
If you already have a big pile of tarts, how worth it would it be to get GoH up even for a single turn?

>And if I use ~25 slaves (in case some of them get sniped) then both S2 masters can both spam master enslave 5 times without anyone dying (200*2*5 /25 < 100),
I'm not sure where you're getting those numbers, but I just calculated the fatigue a S4 master causes with 25 communion slaves, and it's 120 per slave.

That will kill your slaves with 5 casts, though they'd survive (at 3 hp) if you stop at 4.

Increasing your master's level to S5 (easiest way would be putting up LotNS) decreases fatigue per cast to 60 per slave. That should let you cast 5 times without seriously risking your slaves. They'll take one damage though, and you'll need to stop casting completely afterwards.

Will penetration booster affect another item's start of battle spell, if the same guy holds them both?
>>
>>135557242
it depends.

what start of battle spell?
>>
>>135557242
All item spells, including start of battle spells, assume that the person holding the item is casting the spell. This includes any bonuses from items, paths, etc. The only difference is the fatigue cost.
>>
>>135557862
Protection of the Sepulchre. Although I'd like to know what does it depend on (also, does it work the same for auto-casts and regular spells-from-an-item), might be useful for modding purposes.
>>
>>135558192
Thanks! That makes sense. And probably allows for some funny things.
>>
>>135558342
it depends on the spell being cast.

for instance, sollar brilliance from the artifact would not, since global battlefield spells do not use the caster's spell penetration.
>>
>>135558562
That's a pretty big fucking reach for "it depends" mate. Obviously when he asked about spell penetration he was asking about spells that would actually benefit from it. Or you could have just said "It would if the spell would normally be affected by penetration".

Are the Bakemono Hearthiders supposed to be immortal outside of dominion? they don't seem to be in my tests.
>>
>>135565276
No, I tried that and got it to work, but it doesn't preserve paths without eating up an enormous number of events.
>>
>>135565917
Oh, OK just glad nothing is broken. The hearts don't disappear after the Hearthider dies. Is that intended too?
>>
>>135566187
Yeah, they shouldn't. The only thing that should disappear the hearts is killing them, which should be fatal for the hearthider.
>>
>>135565917

What about it just gives a new bakemono hearthider and give the hearthider a specific set of paths (the same randoms required to become a hearthider in the first place). Like, the bak 'resets' to whatever he was like when he hid his heart and became a hearthider. That would only be one event, right?
>>
>>135561991

I just don't attack stalers until they get a sub or get set AI, it seems unsportsmanlike. Also eating stalers/ai to win seems lame.
>>
>>135566749
The problem is that each "hidden heart" requires a separate entry, and there are ~32 possible randoms.
>>
>http://blitzserver.net/matches/view/91

>5 players

Are you telling me people genuinely want to download turns, put them in a folder, open dominions, play them, close dominions, then send them via email somewhere instead of connecting via the game client.
>>
>>135566915
I normally don't bother stalers either, but I'd gotten kind of tired of trying to play gentlemanly in my last several games and people had been bitching about this game in particular so I kind of just threw my normal restrictions away and went for it. We'll see how it goes.
>>
>>135567069

No, i'm saying give all hearthiders the same paths, make them a new unit even. If someone has empowered a 10% random or something and it becomes a hearthider, well, too bad. A hearthider is a specific kind of bakemono lich not a way to preserve your 10% randoms, if that makes sense.
>>
>>135567069
Maybe you could have hiding hearts or restoring from a hidden heart remove randoms.
>>
>>135567154
It's new and different and therefore scary and wrong.
>>
>>135567154
No but blitz server isn't marketed enough.
>>
>>135567223

Well, for me, the fun is not in winning so my non-gentlemanly play is just being a huge dick to the actual human players. And no, not 'hur bot', that's really low level dickishness.
