Nothing wrong with that at all. "Persian Empire" is like calling the Netherlands "Holland", or all of Great Britain as "England".

Persia is just one small part of Iran, which is what most Iranian empires have called themselves. The language of the Achaemenid and Sassanid empires came from Persia proper, but the whole foundation of it as an empire was the unification of Persia with the other Iranian regions.

So, having Persia revolt is no worse than having Italia revolt in the WRE. Literally the only difference is that we're not used to calling the Roman Empire the Italian Empire.

So I'm currently doing a campaign as Venedians, I hold the 3 provinces in pic related. It's currently 407 AD, I'm not at war with anyone and the huns are friendly due to my tribute of food.
Currently, I'm focusing on building my provinces (or rebuilding in the previously razed ones) and unsure of what to do next. I figured I'd just expand further toward the east and take the wood from that province, then south toward Dacia after the nomads are done with it?
I'm kinda afraid I might be stretching my forces to thin.

Speaking of increasing fertility, did anyone ever make a mod that lets aquiducts and qanats increase fertility? It'd also be great if there was a mod that somehow negated the climate penalties for the far south, or at least the Nile and Mesopotamia. Maybe a modifier that boosts fertility, and increases every time that the climate gets worse? A shame you can't just exempt provinces from climate change.

However, there is no mass rebellion, as the nobles of the realm see a good chance to take over for themselves. A man named Porgo, young and bold, takes it upon himself to lead the defense of the Venedian homeland.

If you take Duna the Geats get line of sight on you and they will come after your in a few turns anyway. You'll also probably have to fight the Rugians because the Geats will become friendly with them. If you're also sending troops west to settle then you're probably spread too thin.

Weirdly enough, this didn't happen in my latest playthrough, when I made a beeline for that settlement on turn 1 and didn't actually do any politics with anyone for a while, and then startet trading and exchanging NAPs with both Geats and Rugians.

Other times, they immediately pile up on me the moment they establish contact with me. Shit's odd sometimes.

I lost the battle and my heir, and decided to just reload to the turn before instead of restarting the entire campaign again. I don't give a fuck about scrubbery at this point, I'm just trying to get enough money to support a migration south.

It's interesting. Turn 1 I moved my faction leader and his son to the sea and moved all the way to Britain. After I took care of the White Hun shitters I disbanded all my armies in the East and let it sit. For some reason the AI loves me however and my satraps all played nice with each other and goon-squaded any naysayers. Additionally the ERE has barely been touched and they have not declared war or anything.

Meanwhile I took Britain and camped until I got elephants and all the fun cav and naft throwers. Then I started removing Barbars. Their spear spam is annoying, but the AI can only do so much against a stack of 17 cataphracts and 2 elephants.

The hammer and anvil is a relatively simple maneuver. It begins with two infantry forces of varying strengths engaging in a frontal assault. While the infantry lines are fixed in the engagement, a cavalry force maneuvers around the enemy and attacks from behind, sandwiching it into the friendly infantry. Generally, the force attempting the maneuver needs to have a superior amount of cavalry to be successful.

Right, here's the deal.
Get lots of spearmen or anyone with a shield.
Put them in front.
Fill the rest with archers. Sometimes send a few in front of shield guys for extra range. Retreat them behind infantry when the enemy get's too close.
Have 4 cav, 2 on each side. When the enemy touches your guys, swing them around and hit them in their backs. Have your archers do nothing while this happens.
As for M2. If you have more firepower than the enemy, even if you engage the battle, they will come to you. I guess the AI's rationing is that they don't want you to stand there and pick them off. So you're going to do just that. Have more archers than the enemy. Stand on a hill, make sure they aren't all targeting the first fucking peasant bowman that comes within their range, and just stand still until they touch your infantry.

Actually, here's just your standard army. 9 spear militia 4 or 5 bowmen of some sort, I actually rather like peasant bowmen, they're cheap as fuck and you don't really give a damn if they take enemy return fire.
And leave space for mercenary spearmen when you encounter an enemy army that's actually decent. Your general is all you really need for cav. If you hit one flank with him you can cause a chain rout pretty well.

There is not really a point of using cavalry in Shogun 2 and in Rome 2 theyre great so fuck off.
In Shogun 2 im replaying as Oda atm and all im doing is set up and support a spearwall that makes even Samurai rout after 20 seconds of fighting, so there is no point to rearcharge them since the fights are so short.
I only use the generals to hunt down routing units.
The frontlines collapse so fast due to the high mortality that cavalry isnt necessary.

First, if you're just playing it for the campaign with autoresolving, go play Paradox games. If you've made it 250 hours playing M2 as a simplistic grand strategy game (which is what the campaign is), you'll love the fuck out of Crusader Kings II.

Second, it's easy as fuck to win battles in Attila. If you've got 75 hours in it, I think you're good enough to manage the WRE on normal/hard.

WRE is piss-easy to play as, because your infantry are better than anyone elses. Abandon everything outside of Italy (don't need to raze it - just abandon it and let the AI conquer it over time), then concentrate all of your armies around northern Italy.

Your main army should be 10-12 infantry, 2-4 archers/xbowmen, 4 cavalry, and an onager. This basic template works for almost every army you can play, and against most enemies. Just make the infantry line out of the toughest units you can afford, preferably with shieldwall or spearwall or testudo.

This is a lot of words, if you don't want to read it, I'll make a really short tl;dr at the end.

Most enemy armies will look roughly like what I told you to build above. Roman armies will have more infantry and less archers and cav, and barbars will also tend to have less cav.

You start a battle by forming a line out of your melee infantry. You never want the line to be less than 3 men thick, but aside from that, you want it to be as wide as possible. If these infantry have the shieldwall, spearwall, testudo, or pikewall abilities, use them, but remember that these abilities make a unit bunch up, and this will reduce the thickness of the line. So, if you don't start the battle with your men in one of these formations, leave them 4-5 men thick so they keep a good thickness in shieldwall or etc. Picrelated.

When the battle actually starts, and you see how wide the enemy's line is, adjust the length of your line. You want to make sure that your line is at least as thick as the enemy line. If that's not possible, then have the infantry units at either side of your line bend back a bit, so that your line looks like a trapezoid without a bottom. After this, you can forget about them.

Place archers in front of the line. When the enemy gets close, run them behind the line. If they're crossbowmen, turn off free fire, because otherwise they'll shoot into the backs of your men and kill them. Make sure to get your archers behind quickly if the enemy tries to charge them with cavalry - this is common, but stupid, because it usually ends with their cavalry chasing your archers into your main infantry line, which gets them killed.

Your cavalry should be divided between both sides of the line. They're all you need to actively control early on, if things go right. Their first objective is to defeat the enemy cavalry, because that frees up your cav to do whatever they want.

Cav are the hardest part of the game. For a long time, I always took heavy casualties on my cavalry, and I still do if I fuck up my micro. However, if you are worried, just leave them out of the battle until the enemy has committed their infantry to attacking yours, when it becomes a lot easier to maneuver cav without them dying.

The main thing about cav is that they cannot hold up in a melee fight against normal melee infantry, and if they lack armor they will die very quickly to ranged units. However, if you know how to use them, you will get a lot out of them.

Let's go over how to use cav against each type of unit:

Almost any cavalry unit can take on almost any ranged unit in melee, and win. Your only worry is that you won't be able to rout the enemy ranged unit before the enemy brings in melee infantry to even the fight, or before nearby ranged units fire into the mob and kill you (because horses are larger than infantry). If you aren't charging, stay the fuck out of range. If there are infantry who could reach the ranged infantry in 30 seconds, stay the fuck out of range. If there are cavalry who could reach the ranged infantry, stay the fuck out of range unless you have more cavalry than them. If there are isolated ranged infantry, charge their shit, and they WILL die.

Cavalry vs. Cavalry:

Medium cav beat light cav, heavy cav beat all. If your cavalry is as heavy as the enemy's, they will generally win a 1-on-1 fight if they get the charge off, rather than being charged. Doubled up cavalry hitting one unit from two sides will almost always win - hit with the first, then maneuver the other around to hit the enemy in the rear.

If you see a chance to hit the enemy cavalry far enough away from their infantry such that their cavalry will rout before the infantry can reach the battle, take it. The chief concern is that you never end up in a normal melee fight with normal infantry.

Cavalry vs. Infantry:

No. Just no, unless you've stacked things heavily in your favor. This can mean several things:

1. Very heavy cavalry hitting isolated light infantry. Usually you'll win, but you will likely lose some horses, more than you should.
2. Two normal cav units taking on a single isolated infantry unit. If an infantry unit is isolated, and won't receive help for 30 seconds, you can hit it with one unit of cavalry, then maneuver the other unit around to hit the enemy in the rear. The enemy will take heavy casualties, and probably rout quickly.
3. Hitting infantry that are engaged with your own infantry. The hammer of the hammer-and-anvil - if your cavalry don't have to worry about being attacked because the enemy is already attacking another unit, feel free to charge them in. The enemy will rout quickly when it's being attacked from behind.
4. The enemy is fleeing - cavalry are great for killing routing units, because they can't be hurt, and can outrun anything but other cav.

That's pretty much it, I'll finish off with a post about how to manage the main line battle, but it really isn't hard to do.

How to manage the main line, and the general course of a battle:

So, eventually the enemy's infantry will reach yours. If your men were in testudo, cav charges against your line failed miserably, and enemy ranged units probably haven't done much damage. It'll be a line of your own melee infantry at full health, against theirs, who are probably at full health if you haven't been using your onager properly (will explain that in an addendum). Either way, your men will hold out, and if your infantry are better than theirs, will eventually cause them to rout.

However, you never want to win via a long slog if you don't have to. You get around it with the hammer and anvil.

Even if their infantry aren't weakened or outnumbered, your infantry will hold the line while you try to win with your cavalry. Once you defeat their cavalry, bring your own horsemen around to hit their ranged units once the enemy melee line hits your own. Their ranged units will be defenseless without infantry to protect them, and will rout quickly. You can then bring your cavalry into the rear of the enemy line while it's engaged fighting your own. Once this happens, the battle is won, because wherever your cav hit, the enemywill rout quickly, and then you can bring your men who were fighting those routed enemies to surround the enemies who are still fighting.

This is called rolling up the line, and once it starts, the battle is yours. However, oftentimes you can start doing it even without cavalry. If the enemy has less infantry than you, or some of their units were weakened by your ranged units and onagers, gaps will appear in their line once they reach you. Some part will be thinner than another, and when the men at that part rout, you'll have an opening to move through and start hammering the enemy infantry from behind with your own infantry.

This is the only time that you want to break your line - when the enemy has broken first.

Say, for example, you concentrated missile fire on one unit while it was approaching your line. It goes down to half strength before it hits you, and then loses enough men to start routing after only a short period of combat.

If the rest of their line is in melee with your own, they won't be able to move to plug the gap, and if one of your units is free, either due to routing enemies, or because you left it in reserve, it can then move through that gap to behind the enemy line. This unit can then hit one of the enemy units from behind, and start the rolling-up process.

How to win defensive siege battles:

Leave testudo/X-wall units at each chokepoint into the central part of your settlement. Put ranged units on the battlements. Hold as many melee units as possible in reserve inside. Hide your cav in forests either inside or outside the city.

The enemy will moshpit one or more chokepoints into the center. If one of your defending units is about to break, move a reserve unit into its place.

Use your cav to pick off any enemy ranged units that are unprotected. Usually, this means onagers, but you can also sometimes get archers or slingers who are unprotected by melee troops.

Once ALL of the enemy melee units are committed to moshpitting, if you have any chokepoints that aren't being moshpitted, take as many reserves as possible out of that chokepoint, and move around to hit one of the other moshpits at the rear.

The AI makes this very easy, and you can surround and destroy their moshpits without much difficulty. You can win almost any siege battle this way, as long as you have 5-6 heavy infantry.

Having done the same thing on Hard, it's really not all that bad. I mean, yes, the margin of error drops significantly on Legendary, and there are a few key battles I would have lost in my run. But I don't think those would have necessarily ended my campaign, just made it an actual challenge.

As long as you have two stacks in northern Italy and one stack patrolling the south, with the rest of your armies on garrison duty in the north Italian towns, you can hold onto Italy indefinitely, precisely because of the retarded way that the AI handles settlement battles.

They moshpit against testudo, you bring reserves around through unmoshpitted pathways to surround the moshpit and destroy it.

Granted, I didn't complete the run, but I got to a point where there was literally no challenge. If I had played until Attila came and spammed his horsefucker stacks, it might have become a real challenge... but I don't really think so. The force multiplier you get from defensive settlement battles is completely fucking insane.

One thing you need to worry about is that in the largest moshpits, the units at the rear aren't actually in combat, so they can immediately turn around and engage in normal combat with your hammer units. If you try the usual hammer tactic of using lighter units to break heavier ones by hitting them in the rear, you're going to lose a lot of men.

You'll still probably win, because straggler units from the front of the moshpit will get the "attacked in rear" debuff, but I've cut it really close with fights against mega moshpits.

Visigoths, Romans, Saxons are a couple good ones.
Visigoths have great pike infantry, which will flawlessly soak up melee units, and generally good units.
Romans have the best units in the game and will typically beat down most others.
Saxons have a pretty good starting position in that youll be fighting mostly other Germans, who have similar units to yours so you can learn their strengths and weaknesses.

Try out the WRE. ERE could work too, but honestly I think it's easier to turtle in Italy or Hispania than it is in Anatolia and Greece against both barbars AND Sassanids.

If you play as WRE, just concentrate all of your troops into either northern Italy or Hispania, and build garrison buildings in the border towns near the Alps/Pyrenees.

Once you have 1-2 full stacks, start building small armies to bolster the garrisons of the border cities. It's so easy to turtle that you won't face many problems, and you'll have time to build up Italy or Hispania to support more armies, eventually to go out reconquering.

I found that just stationing a full stack in Aquilea is often enough to keep barbars from even trying - they'll see a full stack garrisoned in a town, and decide that it isn't worth attacking.

corruption capped at 60%, means you have a lot more income, also you now get archers in your garrisons instead of exploratores, which means that after you kill the general early barbar armies rout instantly since you can now send some whistling arrows their way

they also slightly buffed the roman units, especially the elite palatina, which were fucking garbage before the buff (they now deal armour piercing damage, previously they did not, so basically roman "elite" shock infantry was actually weaker than gothic warband which is tier1)

they removed the food upkeep from rally fields and the monetary upkeep is so tiny, that you can now actually afford to build stables and get some early decent cav going

it all sound like small changes but all together they have made the game as WRE a lot easier than it was on release, which is why now going for a legendary WRE this is total war is not that tough and no longer feels like much of an achievement (its more of a drag really)

Well the Shogunate clans are fucking dickheads, not even kidding, best thing you can do is find a safe corner and wait for the civil war to happen, generally in my experience the Shogunate clans outweight the imperial ones since the imperials get the sicker guns later on.
What im worried about tho is that you likely wont get appointed as Vanguard which I dont know is necessary to win but yea, its up to you, I dont think all of the other shogunate ones should betray you but it can happen so its up to you if you wrestle through it and expand some to become vanguard or if you turtle and just be faster than the others at claiming imperial lands in the big Alliance.

In Attila, ranged units have very different roles, so you really need to pick the one for the situation you most commonly face.

Slingers are very cheap, fire very quickly, and units hit by sling bullets are slowed for a time. The issues are that they fire so quickly they run out of ammo almost immediately and are unable to do serious damage to heavy infantry with shields. They also can't arc shots over buildings, which limits your deployment options.

Javelins have the highest damage by far, but are wildly inaccurate and have very low ammo counts. At extremely short ranges they can annihilate entire units in seconds no matter how heavy their armour is. Extremely effective against cavalry, too, most javelins have some form of stealth or sneaky deployment. And if they don't, they tend to be fairly respectable melee infantry in their own right.

Bows are the jack of all trades. Respectable ammo, rate of fire, and damage. Able to fire over obstacles, they should keep firing for the majority of the battle. Ammo types are EXTREMELY good; flaming arrows destroy cavalry, and whistling arrows can rout entire armies in sufficient numbers. I never leave home without some kind of archer unit.

Saying my mods or i dont have vision is quite silly just from the fact, that my mods are pretty much same and follow exact same pattern i created in Shogun 2 - supported all 3 campaigns, then Rome 2 (all dlcs support) and now in Attila (all dlcs support). With each and ever ygame it gets more polished and advanced, but vision is very clear for any of us involved in this and we follow that pattern for over 5 years now so i would avoid saying those things.

Some things some of you see as a cheats, well i see it differently, economy/food/public order etc are still in place, but they just dont play the limiting role, which prevents you to do actual Total War. If for somebody is Total War feeling in commanding 3-4 stacks max and more cant be cause simply my economy or artificial game limits wont allow me, well then for sure Radious mods are not for you. But thats no suprise, cause its like that as i said since Shogun 2.

Every single custom unit we created and added to the rosters is totaly unique, with way more detailes then pretty much any original unit or atlest on the same level. Variety is the only reason why you should keep playing this game over and over again, to play this time for this or that faction. Making factions unique by simply not giving them good roster, not giving them this or that....again this is not Radious way, this is limiting game.

In Lore the Dwarf's defences are huge.

They have the no mans land where all the artillery,bombs etc are focused then they have the outer wall, then the first inner wall, then the second inner wall, then the third and when you breach that you have a gauntlet to run through where crossbows and guns will rain fire on you from above followed by the final wall and even IF you breach that you have to capture the strongpoints filled with warriors behind that.

I doubt CA have made dwarf sieges that intricate but I'll be surprised if they put at least half in.

They did imply it in the blog with Dwarf sieges being epic to witness and commit to.
