Alright, let’s talk Retro City Rampage.

Rampage in a City that is Retro is a 90s styled open world game with a GTA flavor. When I say retro I don’t just mean it’s got a DOS/NES aesthetic , I also mean it’s got enough 90s references to give Abobo’s Big Adventure a run for its money and cause any nostalgia gamer to cream themselves the first few minutes in. Mind you this isn’t a bad thing if you like a silly story with some tongue and cheek writing.

The set-up is simple, our protagonist -Player- applies to be a supervillian’s henchman but after a heist goes bad he comes across what is legally not but closely resembling Bill and Ted’s time machine. Our “hero” takes it and winds up… Well I’m not sure. The place looks like the same city setting so I’m entirely clear. What does happen is that totally not Doc Brown finds you and “your” time machine after it breaks and offers to repair it under the assumption that you’re a hero. Spoiler: you aren’t. This leads into the main story missions finding the necessary components needed to repair the time machine but after the first one the game opens up a bit more by offering some side missions as well. You’ll have a good amount of stuff to do I can tell you that.

The gameplay is quite fun as well though I highly recommend a controller unless you figure out how to change the key bindings which I did not. You’ll find various weapons including guns which you can shoot in twelve directions. It’s not a perfect 360 but it will get the job done. If it doesn’t you can always take page out of the heros’ book and jump on people or hit them with one of the many vehicles you carjack. If you enjoy open-world games and can appreciate 90s references then I recommend this game for you. Happy rampaging!

Hello to anyone still alive, it's that guy again with another review. This time on a classic given a bit of a modern twist; Brutal Doom!

Brutal Doom is a free game that takes the classic, low-resolution aesthetic and game play and pour it into a new engine called "GZDoom" and it looks great. You've got blood staining everything, giblets covering the floors and ceilings, and some pretty nice light rendering as well; all accompanied by a metal soundtrack. With your mouse in hand you have full control over where you aim and it feels good. Seriously, it felt satisfying even to fire the pistol because of how fantastic the hit animations are. Not sure if that should be chalked up to Jon Romero or Sergeant_Mark_IV but it feels great regardless. It's also quite a challenge as some of the beefier enemies can take a few rockets to the face before keeling over. Anyway, I'd recommend this to anyone who likes some classic FPS action with a modern face-lift.

So I tried it Brigador and one of the things that stood out to me was how the movement felt a bit awkward. The giant mech as tank controls which is pretty clever when you think about it and now I'm torn between hating it and liking it.

The main reason Brigador has tank controls (all vehicles have those) is that absolute controls simply don't work well and are even clunkier for what the game is trying to do. As long as turning is involved, absolute controls are a really bad idea and will actually take control away from the player, whereas tank controls allow the player more precise control of their vehicle, especially with a fixed camera.

I was thinking of giving Castle In The Darkness a second playthrough but it's hard in a way I don't find fun. It was worth a first playthrough but I don't like games that have hit points but certain things like spikes are instant-kill.

I've also been playing Mystik Belle, which isn't a bad game, but it's not stand out either. It's a very barebones Metroidvania with some classic point and click adventure elements thrown in. I might return to this one again but for now I'm dropping it.
