lightning hands, for sure. With the right setup, I've had a gunslinger kill 5 ayys in one turn.
>>
>>131101923
A lot of that is correct though.

The performance is fucked even for a lot of people with rigs that should have zero issues running this. There's a lot of janky shit of getting hit by dumb things just flat out through solid walls or by impossible angles from guys on the roof above you. The 8 turn missions can be complete horse shit if the procedural generation really feels like doling out a fucked up map. Their RNG still has some dodgy shit going on that they don't actually document anywhere in the game.
>>
Is there an .ini setting controlling Bradford's bitching in terror missions? I see the civs are getting killed on the opposite maps, thanks, I don't need a 10 second lecture on it each time it happens.

Oh damn, oh well that's not too bad, at least it looks like they cant move on their first turn mindcontroled. Jane Kelly is pretty close too, I'll just run her up and slash.
>Kelly gets oneshot by overwatch
>Another soldier panicks and oneshots the mindcontroled soldier.

Im like 10 missions in now though and thats the only time the game has given me the slightest difficulty, I haven't lost anyone else and most missions I don't even take damage. Is it just me or is this game, on Veteran at least, way too easy? I remember default difficulty on EU being much more challenging, but maybe dozens of LW runs have just made me better.

>>
>>131101874

Lightning Hands for *sure*. Significantly, it allows you to move your sniper and get 2 shots (good for even dedicated snipers), and it has amazing synergy with other gunslinger abilities. It is a bit weak at first, but is much stronger later on.

Deadeye certainly isn't useless however, since it is extremely good at destroying Turrets and other high-armor targets.

Also, in general the Gunslinger perks are better than the Sniper ones (Kill Zone is pretty great though).
>>
>>131102816
Well, you've answered your own question. It's a new game but it's essentially one you've played many times before. I'm dicking around between a few different Vet campaigns (waiting on the patch that will never happen before really getting in there) and it's pretty easy to flawless missions once you get the a handle on the few new things. On Veteran, and probably even on higher difficulties, the main things that are going to get people killed and really give you a run for your money are the things that surprise you or don't work as intended.

Honestly I'd consider Revival to be a much more high reward option but it revolves around you having taken a hit to be of any use. I was lagging behind on my tech initially, when I finally got mag weapons I started going up against Andromedons.

Shit sucked and hurt a lot.

I then just skipped non-important things like shotguns and snipers and expanded out to rush story missions.

Psi Ops > All
Missions are a shit ton easier when you have a pocet Andromedon/Gate keeper.

I got so used to having a very large roster of levelled soldiers in Long War that I can't adapt to Xcom 2 where wounding a couple of people can basically fuck me.

Anyway, Considering I can't have one of every single spec in the game in a squad, what's the current ideal squad formation?

Gunslinger, 2 Grenadiers/Specialists (one of each spec) and a phantom assault?

Maybe drop a heavy and take a long range killzone sniper on big open maps?

All the bases spawned on the other side of the world and I'm finally reaching them now.

Or no turn, if your overwatches are properly stacked. Remember, concealment overwatches are taken without an aim penalty. You essentially get the same shots you would have been setting up with grenades without the resource cost and with an attached risk of allowing the enemy those two turns. I think both have pretty significant benefits. If you know there are only such and such many pods left and have the options to go grenade heavy, then you can trade those tools for safety as is the XCOM way.
>>
>>131104813

Yep, you're constantly being bombarded by missions. I've had a council mission, terror mission and black event mission happen less than a day between.

To be honest I find the game to be incredibly stressful. Doesn't feel like you get to do the things you want to, always someone coming up and interrupting you.

>He didn't seem that good.

He's literally the best, and unfortunately that still wasn't good enough. Believe it or not all those useless Rookies that get gunned down after missing three consecutive shots and panicking are also the Best of the Best. You have to understand, all of these aliens are designed to kill on a genetic level. Even the little Sectoid bastards from the first war are crack shots with the plasma pistols mounted on their armor.

>>131107186

XCOM seem to have canonically reached the level of technology that would allow them to produce Carapace Armor (evident from the Resistance Warrior armor) and probably Laser Weapons as well. The problem is that with their base destroyed, their head of research missing, and almost no resources to actually produce anything other than ballistics, they just couldn't replicate the process.

To be fair, Daddy Shen and Little Shen have done some very impressive work despite the fact that they had almost nothing to work with over the span of 20 years.

>>
>>131106762

Skulljacks work just like Ranger Swords, so you can sprint and use it on the same turn.

*Obviously* you do not use it in the middle of a battle. Rather:

1. Equip the Skulljack on a Specialist for the +25 Hacking bonus. This is the primary benefit.
2. If the last enemy on a map is, say, a Stun Lancer, you can hack it for a bit of bonus intel in the mission (Specialists should succeed at the minor intel 90%+ of the time). If it fails, you are going to kill it anyways.

Just think of it as a Hacking trinket, that has the added benefit of occasionally giving you some extra intel if there is an isolated solider. Significantly, it *does* kill the solider even from full health, so a 70% instant-kill can be a worthwhile tactical option if you are out of options.
>>

>>131107827

Oh, in that case pick Phantom. I personally never go into melee unless it's absolutely necessery because it's not a guaranteed hit like a shotgun blast is, and moving around on the battlefield is pretty good once the fight has started, so you can get some good flanking movement going.

Stun Lancers have way too much fucking health considering they only need to get into your face once to seriously incapacitate or remove a soldier from play. You assume the last remaning unit actually has intel. Most of the time they won't.

Seems to confirm the game started development as early as November 2013. At least that's the earliest script I've found so far. Probably was based off of XCOM EU scripts, since it was all about game state and game management.

There's a lot of intertwined references and shit as you'd expect and the documentation is pretty poor so it's hard to see who does what and what does why. I'm trying to find where a lot of the managers are.

I agree, but when it's fair game to have enemies that are not only immune to melee but damage the player for employing it, it's invalidating an entire skill tree. No other class has a similar counter. Damage from skulljack feedbacks can occur to any class. Snipers don't accidentally kill themselves for shooting at squadsight range. There isn't a shieldbearer skill that knocks grenades back to the grenadier. Specialists aren't at risk of getting HIV from medkits and no one ever hijacks your gremlin to use against you.

I think the main problem is that the timer and the mob groups don't affect each other

you could have a 11 turn timer with a bunch of adventshits and ayys and a 6 turn timer with MECs and sneks and that's only in the early game

Heavy floaters/Elite Mutons were absolutely fucking monstrous in Long War. Especially against MECs in b14 where MEC tanking was essentially the best tactic, but HEAT ammo was still insanely powerful and a heavy floater leader could eviscerate even a Goliath.

However there was one big counter. You could spam psi skills on half your troops then use officers with high will to boost everyone's will up to an effective level. Then you could just always spam psi abilities against floater or muton enemies with very good success.

Now psi abilities are more restricted, those kind of strategies don't work, but we still have the heavy floaters.

At least they don't come in pods of 6 any more.

Interesting...now if only there was a way to change the pathing bias when pods aren't activated... Then you wouldn't get bizzarre behaviour like advent climbing pipes or mecs randomly jumping up buildings and breaking concealment. Could normalize the patrols to something where you could actually use buidling/high ground to creep close.

Barring his immediate use as someone capable of meticulously coordinating a squad of professional soldiers to succeed against seemingly insurmountable odds?

Loyalty.

XCOM are true believers, especially Bradford. They dedicate everything they've got to the cause. The enemy do not value life, know no mercy, and do hold to any principle of honor. XCOM is everything they are not: Protectors of human life, symbols of hope, and practitioners of a soldier's honor.

So basically HOOAH NO MAN LEFT BEHIND.

Open-xcom has terror from the deep (just dig around the site to make sure you get it). However, you need the orginal files for both x-com and tftd to make them work. Buy game on steam in bundle or download them somewhere.

That video irks me.

Yep, the best example of warriors and warfare is a large, advanced professional army designed to fight one of the largest and most sophisticated armies around (USSR/allies) going up against some goatfuckers with poorly maintained, outdated equipment.

I mean you could argue that Iraq had a highly skilled core of shock troops/tank crews but even they were shit due to no support.

I mean you compare this shit to an actual modern war (WWI or WWII) and all this gay 'warrior' shit melts away and reveals it to be absolute carnage where any feats of valor or daring by either side are just ground into dust and annihilated by a war machine.

Because you need to know how much health an enemy has so that you can choose the right troops to take it down or to see if you have enough damage to take it out on that turn.

The 'this is how much damage you do' thing only shows the current troopers damage (which once again, will be hard to count) and also can be buggy and incorrect.

Your reasoning is garbage, large healthbars are a pain to read and there's no excuse for keeping it like that.

>The whole warrior culture is fucking disgusting if you ask me.

No, that's the thing.

I don't think warrior culture is disgusting. A lot of what that actually is comes down to how soldiers cope with the situations they're put into, on both sides mind you.
While I might not have respect for some causes or justifications for fighting, I always have respect for the people that get thrown in these situations.

There is valor, bravery, daring, impressive feats of strength that can happen in warfare, there are heroes who do incredible things. Those things often involve their equivalents on the other side of the conflict dying.
That doesn't make war any less disgusting, but I figure it's important to remember there's 'warriors' on both sides, and historically most soldiers never really made an explicit choice to kill and be trapped in pointless shit.

That being said the culture around how war is portrayed in some countries is pretty fucking bad. You tell a bunch of essentially kids that they can be cool too, and then they go to war and burn to death inside a metal coffin after a shell or mine destroys their APC.

It's no different than kids being told they could go fight for king and country and have a jolly old time in WWI, and then 2 months later they were shitting into buckets inside shell craters and sitting in torrential rain hoping they won't die today.

From what I have seen so far, they're alright but not great.

They start with an attack that does 4-6 damage that never misses, ignores armor and shields but only works on organic enemies. (Can be upgraded with better psi-op class item)
They also get an upgrade to give them an aura that grants immunity to enemy psi attacks to anyone in it, and another is basically the Codexes huge bubble that disables weapons. Not sure about more, those are all I've seen so far.

Seems alright if you use them a lot.

Wound system is dumb as fuck. Before how wounded your soliders got depended on damage they took. Now it's random and seems 1 damage is essentially gravely wounded for 20-30 days. The previous system was clearly better.

Having to travel to pick up supplies when the entire game is on a time limit makes no fucking sense either.

Mission structure is retarded. Most of it has time limits in a game where you're suppose to play carefully (and thanks to how wounds works now, get majorly fucked in the ass if you don't).

Base management aspects were dumbed down for no apparent reason.

I'm sure there are more, I just can't be bothered to think.

>Humanity had no idea how to cope with the new warfare introduced in WW1.

They really didn't.

For many decades military strategists had all these fanciful ideas about how war would be in the future. How you'd have these insane pushes with infantry and cavalry through gaps created by artillery.

What actually happened was casualties on a scale nobody had seen before in all human history. At a few famous battles from the Napoleonic wars, 60,000 troops might've been lost in the entire battle. That battle would have lasted a single day and then have been over.
Napoleon used to say he spent 30,000 lives a year.

WWI comes along, and on contact with significant enemy forces, the assaulting Germans lose 60,000+ troops to defending Belgians inside their sci-fi, star wars tier forts on the first day. Not the whole battle, the first day of many to come.

>>131112746

They were a different kind of trauma, you have to understand.

You might go into a battle in the napoleonic war and have a bad fucking time, see a lot of people die. But ultimately it's over within a few hours and if you're alive you can usually get back to camp in one piece.

However, medically, shelling actually has an entirely seperate effect on people. These people didn't just get shelled 'a bit'. It's fairly accurate to say no humans on earth have been under the same kind and degree of fire and firepower as people were in WWI.

These weren't short intense operations, these were intense operations that continued for months. Most of which consisted of soldiers being helpless and generally being pounded with guns they couldn't see for days or hours at a time.

There's a lot of information on the topic that I couldn't possibly hope to touch on, there were truly horrifying things in wars throughout history, but the type of stresses and strains that were put on soldiers in WWI is a bit unlike anything before it, and anything since.

They'd never seen it before, and thought it was cowardice. Before war was about going up close and fighting. WW1 war added artillery in insane amounts, and trust me, when they hit the ground you can really feel the tremor alongside a terrible sound.

Even modern soldiers can get shellshock. Couple this alongside days upon days in a wet trench with little food, smells like literal shit, water everywhere, and every now and then a officer commands you to rush the enemy position. Then a few hours later, the two sides go out and pick up their dead, and repeat the same thing over and over for weeks on end. Gotta say I prefer the old look simply because the moment you saw an enemy you instantly knew how much HP it had.

The thing that XCOM 2 is doing wrong in my opinion is that it's hard to see how much HP an enemy exactly has.

They just need to do one little thing and I hope that's something a mod can add.

Every 5 HP, have 2mm space to the next HP bar so you can instantly visually grasp the strength of an upcoming enemy without stopping and counting them down one by one

>protracted nature and the complete lack of any sense of agency in the matter topped off with intensity and new kinds of trauma all piled on at once

Pretty much.

What we consider today to be standard boot camp training for riflemen would have been considered special forces, shock troop training back in WWI.

The only nation to have a military that wasn't essentially reservists and conscripts at the time was the United Kingdom, considering their military was 70,000 in strength, and France/Germany had troops in the literal millions, they changed over the conscripts pretty quick.

So what you have is young boys, rich and poor, college students, kids off the street, all going to fight in a war they've been told will be 'good fun' and a 'lark around the countryside'. Often people signing up as villages with all of their friends and family.

Then they go into combat and see half the people they grew up with be turned into a fine red mist or be horribly maimed and wounded. Then (on some parts of the front) they got pounded with literally millions of shells within a few days straight.

Shit drove people literally insane. Officers on both sides were reporting the conditions were so bad, even seasoned soldiers were losing their fucking minds.

Here's hunker values. Obviously no more crit immunity and it doesn't double defense. You could easily buff dodge to 100 if you didn't want full health soldier being one shot through cover.

>hard to see how much HP an enemy exactly has.
This literally does not matter
The exact max hp they have I mean

Since damage in xcom 2 is always like
3-4
5-6
bla bla bla
AND everything is % to miss or hit, max doesn't matter

If xcom 2 was a game in which all damage values are the same, and each shot hit, than yes, it would matter a lot, knowing if you can take down that unit in one hit

But as it is, it's about making the best move damage wise, seeing what damage you roll and going from there

It's honestly okay as is, I mean, for all complainaning people have for HP bars, why don't they ever ask themselves if it actually hurt them in some way while they played

A few people were worried about the timers, no one knew it'd be that bad.

If you're talking about this then it's a legitimate concern, you flank an enemy at close range you shouldn't be potentially punished for it.

So, what difficulty level are ya'll playing on? I started my first game on the second, since every review talked about how that one is approximately what classic was in the first one, but I just finished it and most of the time it was easy as fuck. I've only ever finished XCOM1 a single time (in classic), why would they fucking write that the third difficulty is for "XCOM2 experts only"
Well, here we go again
>>
>>131114519
>PANICKED_AIM_ADJUST=-35
This is why all your panicked soldiers almost never hit anything. Its the same as if an alien ws suppressing them. Also good news for friendly fire though, but it seems like they really reduced chances of that compared to XCOM1

>;Panic
>MAX_PANICKING_UNITS=2
>; Do panic check and then decrement Will by these amounts
>PANIC_STRENGTH_TAKE_DAMAGE=10
>PANIC_STRENGTH_LOS_FRIENDLY_DEATH=10 ; At MYRANK -PANIC_LOWER_RANK or higher, unless...
>PANIC_STRENGTH_LOS_HIGHER_FRIENDLY_DEATH=25 ; At MYRANK +PANIC_HIGHER_RANK
>PANIC_STRENGTH_ALLY_PANICS=0
>PANIC_HIGHER_RANK=2
>PANIC_LOWER_RANK=1

So damage slaps you with -10 to will and then rolls for panic. Friendly soldier death is a -10 to roll. Higher ranked soldiers is a -25 will to roll.

Chain panicking is removed but you can always re-implement it :^)

That's a thing I didn't bother typing up but fine
I always say this when people discuss this

Max hp never matters
The only thing that matters is how much hp they have left and the damage you can do

I'm not sure why people are really bothered by the turn limits on some missions. I've never been pressured by the turn limit enough to stop me doing what I wanted. Seems like the people complaining just don't understand how pods activate and how you don't need to be in cover half the time and how to use concealment. Modding it for more turns is really turning on babby mode.

I don't have much gripes about the timed missions, but there are some cases where I think they don't really work, and it's more to do with the "context" of why they are there.

>VIP Extraction missions
Skyranger is hanging about, UFOs are coming to blow it up if it stays too long, you have X amount of turns to get outta there
>Transmitter missions
Shut the thing down before it finishes uploading the Viper porn to the Ethereals hard drive, simple enough
>Power conduit thing
Shit's gonna explode mayng, spray a fire extinguisher before it does.

Those make sense, those work just fine.

But then there's

>Retrieve vial of ayylien-human guacamole from this building/truck

"Self detonating charges are in place around the objective, get in there and shut them down"

Now that doesn't make much sense, if it's important to the ayyliens and they don't know you're there to steal it, why would they go "Alright let's strap this time bomb to our valuable asset, yeah mayng this is a good idea"?

Those missions don't need a time limit, or at least, they could be better explained, like you have X amount of time before a big ass reinforcement unit comes in on schedule to take it to somewhere more important.

Well it's probably there as a failsafe, if someone tries to steal it they may want to destroy the whole building so nothing gets leaked AND you take out filthy terrorists. We already know the alien's regard for life in general is pretty low

>>
>>131117105
Game design wise it's fine, but from a thematic perspective it doesn't make any sense. If they were okay with destroying the box why not just immediately blow the charge? Why put it on a timer if there's no one around?

Are the streets just full of ADVENT vans that randomly explode because xcom wasn't there to defuse them?

It makes perfect sense, the aliens know that you are coming to get the stuff, but they don't know when/where your guys are, so they rig the shit to a timer so that if they meet resistance then you can't get the resources.

This way they can still have the stuff if:
A: XCOM gets fucked up before the stuff blows up, timer deactivated and goods secure.
B: XCOM never shows up, timer deactivated, goods secure.

The aliens evidently don't want to destroy the valuable resources unless absolutely necessary.

The optimization is lousy and the timers could be tweaked on certain mission types, but people bitching about RNG and statistics need to:

1. realize they're playing an XCOM game

2. learn how statistics work in the context of the game

3. git gud

Seriously, XCOM isn't an easy game when you're not playing on babby difficulties, and taking losses is a part of the game. Raging about it only reveals that you're a disgusting casual.

Bladestorm can't be countered. I left a Muton with the choice of either shooting one ranger with untouchable up, or shinning up onto a roof to attack the other who was 1 tile back from the ladder. Naturally, he ignored the exposed soldier 10 feet away and went up the ladder. Bladestorm, Muton ded.

/vg/ help. I just had to restart because I got destroyed in my first playthrough (i knew fuck-all what to do or what to prioritize) and I'm still not sure what I need to gun for.

I don't mind the timers except for the massive fucking one every mission screen and the constant red alerts saying "do this or you're fucked" preventing me from getting supplies

What do I do? What should I prioritize? Help a poor Commander help his people.
