I think melee units in general are pretty badly OP as they stand, so much that the only ranged unit I could as more powerful than them is the Sectopod, if I can't start cleaning on the turn I trigger the pod and if it goes for a double shoot instead of that stupid "let me set up my superweapon" move

>Faceless can pop and melee dash on the same turn, which can easily fuck you over in earlier missions
>Regular Stun Lancers can dash melee you all the way from the fog of war
>Sneks can pull you from full cover and still use it when constricting someone, and are the first unit to introduce the dreaded Dodge mechanic
>Elite Stun Lancers gain an armor pip and can Dodge too, meaning that even a full Overwatch wall if you can set it up has significant chances to fail completely between the Overwatch penalty, the general miss chance from Dodge and Dodge grazed hits

The camera hangs are all sorts of awful, but the one thing that caught my attention was being pulled out of the map by a viper tongue and having a soldier levitate for the entire mission from a broken cover. Both on the same Blacksite mission

I think the mere fact that melee units can dash and attack in the same turn is broken as fuck. Imagine EW if the Chrysalids or Berserkers could have done that. Add on the Stun Lancers' chance to stun and you get suicidal mooks streaking out of the dark to one-shot your guys even if they only do one actual damage. I hope this shit gets rebalanced or someone makes a mod for it, because it's severely hampering my ability to remain in control of the situation.

Conversely, I don't think it's unfair that the Ranger can do it because Slash is to Rangers what Run and Gun was to Assaults, and RnG was a much better power in my opinion.

Dodge is a bullshit mechanic by all margins, and it's only going to get worse as the rest of your ADVENT units upgrade

>Free miss chance, allowing ridiculous misses at flanked CLOSE RANGE

Just one tip to deal with them. If an unit is exposed to incoming melee, hunker it down and aid protocol it instead of setting up an overwatch wall. If you have other serious threats, fire at them instead and just hope it isn't TOO bad

A lot easier. Do NOT get yourself revealed before reconning everything and anything, and get a Specialist to disable the console. Also be careful, most pods spawn inside the saucer. Battle Scanners are extremely useful in this mission in particular

This game is raping my ass so hard and I love it, 5 hours in and the only veterans who haven't died are a Dutchman with John Lennon glasses and a Irish sniperwaifu. Some of the missions will require you to complete one of the objectives within a certain amount of turns.
To compensate for this, most missions give you concealment, which is a pseudo-stealth phase allowing you to setup an ambush on a bunch of enemies.

I got a no-time limit mission after a load of bullshit ones in which literally every non-rookie was hopsitalized apart from a Korean backbench sniper with aviators and I thought 'I'm literally going to take five million years with this mission' and it was the most successful one of my playthrough. No one even got wounded and my Korean guy turns out to be a fucking psychopath who I may replace my main sniper with.
Basically no timer missions are just breathing space.

This is especially true if your sniper has the skill that gives it a free action after killing an enemy on a lower elevation, allowing you to reload instead of taking a turn off reloading

Turn limit severely limits how many "solutions" you have to a given mission, especially later on at a higher difficulty setting.

It's not hard, it's just not fun to be told how to play. Maybe some people want to take some missions on in other ways. Maybe they want to be tactical and creative about it.

There is nothing hardcore about doing it fast. There is nothing hardcore about spamming overwatch.

All turn limit does is limit you to one play style later on. Not a single positive thing about it.

And the game deserves its negative reviews, Firaxis is shit at launching games as usual.

I'm going to restart my campaign for the third time as I lost the first and the 2nd I cheesed and savescummed too much I am going to savescum a little still, since I am not made of iron. At least enough to get sergeant so I can have five squaddies. What I've picked up on and that might help others, bearing in mind I ain't no beagle and this was on commander difficulty:

-Prioritize opening up communications with the area holding the ayy facility. I thought I could just hit the black site to turn back the clock, but for whatever reason I wasn't able to when the bar filled and the countdown started, and it would also take too long to open up communications with Mexico (was in South Africa so I had to open it up with Brazil then with Mexico) in time. Make sure you have access to a facility to smash before the countdown starts, not once it does.

-Make sure you got 10 advent trooper corpses in the bank (and more for the exo or skelly-suit. 2 for one of them if I recall). I had the odd business of being mid-campaign with archons and mutons and codex but no predator armor because of that.


At least for me the facility (not black site) was easy as shit because the map was a Plateau next to the very small facility. And since you don't got a time limit, go slow as fuck and overwatch that shit. In fact, bait them back into ambushes or better cover for you. Think it took me 20 turns on facility or black site because I wanted to take it slow.

-Grenadier is love, grenadier is life.

-"All but one guy overwatch and then break concealment" is great vs one 2-3 man pod. But it is not a panacea for every encounter, and can even be worse than that.

It may be down to the mission variety that I've been getting, so many fucking VIP missions, but the timer has been making me use pretty formulaic tactics (move up until I see the first pod, ambush them, work my way to the objective staying in full cover, dash to the evac / mop up survivors).

The one time I got a data retrieval mission I snuck into the office and hacked the terminal fairly easily, but it alerted the aliens who were all pretty close and put me in a much worse off tactical situation than had I worked my way toward the objective murdering everything in my path like normal.

Keep in mind, I like the idea of the timers I just don't think it's fully fleshed out or integrated into the game flow as well as it could have been.

The distance on stun lancers is the single most OP thing about them, I'd say. I would need to look in the INI to seed the exact number but it seems like they can run the entire map in a single turn. That being said while they are infuriating I can manage them for the most part, but I haven't met the elite ones.

It's a lot more 'flavorful'. EU was ultimately very straightforward and plain in combat, almost like a jagged alliance or some such. Unique scenarios that weren't "Clear the AO" were the exception. Now things are much more complex and varied. Very assymetrical. In EU any mission that wasn't timed ultimately meant you would only lose if you were woefully outmatched by the enemy in equipment. Now you can be outmatched by the enemy in equipment but also outmatched in their unique abilities.

If you havin problems on the easiest difficulty then I feel bad for you son because I got 99 problems on commander.

Medic skills are very hit and miss

Combat protocol is guaranteed damage, and heavy damage on dangerous robotic enemies. Plus, it takes a while for medikits to really become useful with the Nanomedikit project

Healing wounds doesn't make your soldier recover faster (I wish that getting out of the mission with treated wounds would downgrade the gravity of your soldier's wounds by one). However, some enemies can do lethal damage if you don't have medics, notably lids

Revive Protocol is fucking useless. You're wasting the Medic's turn to have another unit use their turn, and very often they're also wounded and in a bad position. All they had to do was make it so Specialist heals auto-remove effects and it would be on-par with Haywire Protocol, which can save your squad if you activate one too many turrets or Sectopods

The last skill that allows you to send your GREMLIN on a healing sortie seems well worth it, had a mission save from it once. However, it's very rare that your damage is that spread out unless you're hurting, since timers force you to rush the same soldiers and finish quickly instead of sponging weak fire

The main thing with Medics versus Hackers is that healing soldiers is only useful if a soldier was battered and you can't fall him back to take safer shots. Hackers on the other end are virtually always useful on all difficulties, and taking control of a turret can turn everything around

Timer makes no sense on a VIP mission as it arbitrarily forces you to evacuate and lose when it reaches 0 even if you hypothetically have the VIP almost next to the LZ point but can't reach it in time. Yes, Central talks about interceptors - so why couldn't the LZ be at any other open spaced point on the map? It's not as if there is an AA gap literally 40 feet open between the central courtyard before the VIP's prison and the backalley the ship picks you up at.

It is easily solvable with rescue ops - you can call down an LZ anywhere the second you pick up the VIP. Usually the LZ is very close to the VIP but it'll take 2 turns to reach.

It becomes a problem with escort ops since you already start with the VIP. One workaround would be to make escort VIP missions not a countdown to defeat but a countdown to victory. You have to reach the LZ, the plane arriving in 8 turns, and hold off the enemy in the mean while.

Not even the guy you're responding to, just also confirming this really does work. I need to do more testing in combat, but the base is locked to 60 FPS now. You know how laggy it would be as it zoomed in on the map? Prepare to see it smoothly transition into it just like Enemy Unknown again, only if you follow that dude's thread exactly.

The fix is for Enemy Unknown, it was posted years ago, but I guess it works for a lot of Unreal games.

During my blacksite, when i got to the building I was still concealed

As I had 4 of my dudes on the roof and a Ranger on the bottom floor, a mech patrol does their little walk around as usual.

Suddenly the mech goes apeshit, skyrockets through the roof for 1 tile, spots my entire flanked roof team, goes back down and activates.

1 Grenadier is killed by a Viper pod outside, the other three get full grenade and all fall down. 2 other full health people die and 1 is left on 2 HP.

As they fell down, they get another vision on a Sectoid pod.

Now it's one Ranger and one 2 health Grenadier vs 3 ADVENT, 1 Mech and 1 Sectoid.

It was the best XCOM experince I've had this far.

Same, for the most part, I went back and did lmpossible EW vanilla afterwards and I got through it alright after a few attempts. Not sure if it was more or less difficult, just hugely different priorities.

I do feel like LW gave a lot more flexibility, the only big downside being the maps were too small for the purposes of the mod.

Plus later on in LW, the innate defence buffs to aliens were pretty ridiculous, as was the pricing of MEC stuff in the most recent releases (considering the MECs were nerfed as to be not as insane as b14).

Also, when tutorial is enabled, ironman is disabled. Yeah, it's dumb.

Your options are either to just continue in non-ironman mode but use your own honor to not savescum, or quit when you're past the tutorial stuff and restart without it. Then it let's you turn ironman on.

Turns out people were annoyed by manually building 6 guns, equipping them on their main soldiers and reserve troops, then reorganizing inventories every mission to take the good gear off the wounded / tired and onto fresh troops for the next assault.

Now the build costs are higher and you can skip all that autistic inventory management. If you don't like that, I suppose you could wait for the mod that requires you to manually equip individual magazines, grenades, and flashlight balls in a finite number to each soldier, every fucking mission.

My game hangs, usually during an animation or the like, forcing me to end the process (and then steam because it tries to relaunch it immediately and then stops responding). Worst part is I can't find any rhyme or reason why it happens, I went two hours playing without a problem then get two crashes within fifteen minutes of each other.

At least I get to look at the pretty loading screens, I guess.

So I've got ~5 ticks in the avatar project because I've been fucking around making contact with other regions + picking up scientists and stuff rather than doing the first blacksite mission.

My understanding is that doing certain missions (like the first blacksite mission?) will remove ticks from the avatar project.

Is it possible to prolong the campaign for as long as I want so that I can build up a massive bank / do all the research / train up all my soldiers to max before doing all the campaign missions, or will I lose because eventually I won't be able to reduce the avatar timer anymore?

I ask this because I have to choose between two missions right now, one of which will prevent faceless from spawning in EVERY mission, and one which will prevent a tick from going onto the avatar project.

I want to avoid faceless being in every mission, but I want to make sure I'm not digging myself into a pit by letting avatar ticks go onto the timer freely.

Also this game is fucking awesome despite the performance issues.

Like I don't know, I've been playing earlier games of the genre like Silent Storm and even indie recent ones like Hard West and I'm somewhat astonished that those games have tech that this game didn't even bother to have.

Look at equipment for example, like all you get is one fixed weapons to share along all your rookies and specalists regardless of class with the only difference are the upgrades which after a while you can tell what is best suited for who/what. I've beaten every single timed mission with 2-3 turns to spare on Commander, at least, and I considered myself a conservative player in EW/LW. Concealment encourages you to move fast at the start of a mission. I think it makes you plan out more of a general path you want to take to the objective, especially on VIP missions.

There are definitely still valid tactics to consider.

For instance, while people do advise not doing so, there are definitely points where sneaking past a small patrol and saving your ambush for a more dangerous target legitimately works.

It completely depends on the situation and how sure you are that the small squad won't catch you in a pincer formation with the rest of the ayys.

Where have you been for the last 13 years? This has always been the trend. Games keep getting simpler, this isn't restricted to XCOM or its particular genre. The reasons are many: development cycles which favor other parts of the game more, corporate policy, a need for mass appeal (which complex systems / too many options work against), and the difficulty in coding or modeling 3D HD assets compared to banging out a 2D sprite no one can make heads or tails of to begin with. RPGs face the same problem with dialogue and storytelling now since everything needs to be voiced and you can't sit an actor down for free to recite your fucking manifesto or get them back in the booth whenever you need to edit something. Then you've got games getting dumbed down or having shittier controls because it all needs to fit on a console.

XCOM2 goes a bit further than EU/EW with the different ammo types, so there's part of your weapon customization already, not to mention the personalized upgrades. A bit more on this, I'm taking issue to this now because unlike EU you buy weapons in one go. I understand why, since you lose weapons on a unit death and needing to build base weapons over and over again would be a pain in the ass. But I feel there should be a tradeoff.

Why should it? Why not push the mechanics of the shell they've decided to go with?
Even looking past the 2 point per turn system because I like it, why not go full guerrilla simulator and have like civillians help you out if XCOM's liked in that country and have the guerilla factions be divided at first and then XCOM's the one uniting them being shown in a much more interactive way, like asia would have their version of the resistance with their tactics, appearance and mission types/maps that differ from the other continents? Why not see the resistance groups in action on the battlefield if you're in a place where the resistance has a powerful foothold and higher numbers of advent troops in places where the resistance is nearly non existent? You said this game is different and it shouldn't be exactly like the old games, so why not go all in with this guerrilla concept?

Even some of my fave games were a disappointment in the expectations department, mostly due to marketing being misleading

But xcom 2 delivered on everything and is everything I wanted from it and more

I feel happy something like this can happen in the industry
