I think it's because a big theme of the game is how doing the right thing is what makes you a good person, not what your intentions are. Hence Genocide treating the player as utterly monstrous even if Sans deduces that the player is simply bored or curious rather than actively malevolent.

Asgore had good intentions, never wanted to hurt anyone, and was a very kind and gentle person, but what he did and continued to do (murder and ultimately genocide based on revenge and fear) was pretty horrific. And it wasn't like he made the choice to stop it, either - he only stops trying to kill you because Toriel and the others show up, not because of his own morality-crisis.

And it'd mess up the pacing of the game if it gave us a big Asgore-redemption arc right after Alphys' one, probably.

Alphys didn't kill anyone, and her experimentation was done under Asgore's orders with his permission.

She fucked up in hiding the amalgamates, but as her ruler and patron Asgore was obligated to find out what had happened. He didn't make any attempt to do so beyond sending her a couple of text-messages.

And ultimately Alphys made the choice to do the right thing, whereas Asgore never got the chance to. And probably wouldn't have anyway, he fights you to the death unless stopped by outside influences.

Don't get me wrong, Toriel's morality is a joke. She basically leaves the kids for dead if they tell her they don't want to stick around the goddamn ruins forever, and her sending them into danger alone and unprepared (she doesn't tell them Asgore's plan, what he looks like, or that they'd need to kill him to leave) is pretty indefensible.

But her faults lie in her passiveness and failure to appropriately deal with someone elses shit. It wasn't Toriel that made the underground so violently anti-human, it was Asgore.

I sort of wish that the game paid more attention to this than it did, but can understand why it didn't.

So Gerson isn't a boss monster, but still lived hundreds of years because he's based off an animal that can live a really long time?

Frisk (who might I add is a small child) had spent the whole game A) being told that Asgore was nice and would let them leave peacefully, and B) that listening to adults when they told them to fuck off or give up was a shitty idea.

Frisk/the player have every reason to believe that Asgore is all talk like everyone else, and there will be a peaceful resolution to the conflict if you just try.

It's only Asgore that breaks the pattern. Frisk could (and did, if you spare him at the end of the battle) have entered the fight with the purest possible intentions, it doesn't matter. Asgore will kill them all the same unless you fight back, not a single other monster in the game (bar Flowey, who along with Genocide Chara is the most 'evil' creature in the game along with not even being a real monster) does this.

Asgore wants you to kill him. That's why he'll kill himself if you try to give him mercy on repeated neutral runs.

At the same time, he can't just let you kill him because that's abandoning his people and he made his decision to put his people's hopes above his morals and his happiness a long time ago. So he fights you, but because he has almost no actual killing intent, he holds back heavily, his actual stats being far weaker than they appear and him always knocking you down to 1 HP before finishing you off. It's the same situation he was put in when it all began, he either abandons the hopes of the underground and lets you kill him, or he continues with his plan and maintains hope even if he hates what he's doing and thinks he deserves to die for it.

And just like how he handled getting human souls, he barely puts in an effort at fighting you because he doesn't actually want to fight, he doesn't want power, and he doesn't want to wage a war.

The most bloodthirsty of them all can be reasoned with after you get away from her and she has time to cool down and talk to you. Well, the monsters WERE pretty violently opposed to the IDEA of humanity at least. Bratty and Catty (a couple of average, unaggressive teenagers) are SO hyped for the destruction of millions of civilians who haven't done a thing to them, and probably don't even know they exist.

By the time that you come to the underground though, the wounds over the death of Asriel seem to have largely healed or been forgotten, and no-one actually seems to hate humans all that much even as they cheer for their extinction. They're so out of touch they don't even know what they look like.

In Toriel's defense, she's hundreds of years old, and has spent the whole time living like a hermit in the ruins with nothing but the odd froggit and vegetoid around her. And they say they're too scared of her to communicate much, too.

She could actually be perfectly justified in assuming that the anti-human sentiment is as high as it would have been right after shit went down, given her isolation she doesn't really know that the political climate has changed so much.
