High population vanilla at 1x sounds great, but I've played Vanilla quite a bit (not as much as WOTLK) plus I find it hard to stay interested in Vanilla and I don't know if I still have the patience or daily 14 hours to invest in it to keep up. Generally you get old addons from Wowace and Curseforge. Find the addon you're looking for, open it's page, go to the "Files" tab (works on both pages) and find the most recent Release version for the game version you want, or if no release version is available, the most downloaded version is usually ok. if you ask the server to provide you with current player statistics. It will give you those statistics right away.

all that should happen is the player counter should give you the current number. If the player counter is not going down as players log out, that means that it was programmed not to show actual numbers.

this sounds a lot like how they locked old raids because "they are not Bliz like yet" conveniently as they released the transmog feature.
also it sounds like how they locked heroic modes in raids because "they are not Bliz like yet" while allowing people to buy the heroic mode gear.

The way I see it, it pretty much forces the developers to make content that's facerollable by an unsynergetic group of 5 worst players in the server, in addition to removing the need to communicate with other players and allowing you to behave as assholeish as you like because you're unlikely to ever meet the players you were grouped up with again.

Now, it has other handicaps as well (such as making the game feel like a queue simulator rather than a world, being totally disconnected from the instance's place in the setting and the game world) but I'd argue those are the main ones and WotLK suffered from trivial content from day 1 (Blizzard didn't nerf WotLK "heroics" to be be doable by randoms like in Cata, nothing was lost because they already were trivial) and in a medium-pop server your reputation does matter.

In terms of retail, it was a horrible move because it ensured 5-mans would never be a relevant part of progression again, but unless you completely rethink the progression system to something TBC-esque, in the context of WotLK as-is, I don't think it's too harmful.

The first Naxx 25 clear came in in 2 days and they cleared half of the instance with just 18 people in the raid. I also remember my guild was extremely disappointed as we didn't even wipe in the first 4 bosses we did. The talent changes affect things on spec-by-spec basis. For example, Enhancement received fairly major buffs along the way, some specs have received nerfs (for example, HaT spec for rogues was broken in 3.0.8 patch). I did it the normal way on ToD in hhoj at least and even a couple of days ago on another char. However, the problem wasn't even that you had to range them down (it was actually doable the normal way when I leveled up on Lord, just that some of the mobs bugged out) - it was that they would not respawn for 3 days blocking many people's progression.

For clearance, it was Lordaeron on which they would not respawn for 3 days. On ToD I didn't have a problem with the quest. After the respawn incident the quest was fixed and the hit bug was introduced (where you had to range them down). I don't know if that was ever fixed since as I said, I did it before it broke.

To be fair the fight has a couple of problems on Lord. First, in 10 man if you use the stones to MC the mobs, they deal abysmally low threat, making the fight super long (or if anybody is even slightly trigger happy, you'll probably wipe.) This is circumvented by having priests MC them even in 10 man though.
Second, the DKs' abilitites randomly stop working from time to time, so that you cannot taunt nor use Boneshield. That one results in a wipe if it happens too many times during the course of the fight.
