It's never really fully discussed. On one hand, they supposedly have fully human, organic bodies. There are obvious tweaks to make them hardier, but in general everything is there.

I can think of two dialogues that contradict each other (maybe). First is the synth kid. You will hear that he/it will never grow up and will stay the same age. Second is the Mayor infiltrator. One of the many reasons why they say he couldn't be a courser is that he/his body is aging. This can all likely be reconciled by saying that the synth kid is kind of a prototype unlike the others.

So, if I had to guess? I'd say yes on both counts. We know synths can have sex and everything, and the complete biological similarity would at least seem to hint at them being fully compatible. But I don't think anything says for sure.

If deacons story is to tell anything its that synths maybe infertile. sperm and egg cells, along with the process by which the body produces them, may be too complex for the institute to reproduce. Ir they dont want the synths to reproduce since if a synth dies they can make a new one. And if you have your slave caste the ability to reproduce then that itself will cause issues.

It really doesn't say anything about that at all. The only dialogue that could apply is "We were trying for kids, ekeing out a living," which is a pretty generic line that doesn't really imply anything. It's a normal thing to say.

How are your settlements developing?

I have no idea what the Institute's ultimate goal was supposed to be. "Humanity -- Redefined"? They aren't doing anything to "actual," original humans, only creating synths. In fact, they explicitly avoid cyborg type things, and the Director(s) talk about how Kellogg is a one-off that they don't want to do more research about because it's outside of their goals and plans. I really don't understand how it all fits together in a coherent way. And they're so focused in making a "better human" but the result is something they look down on as something that is purely a machine.

I know what you're saying, but I don't think it necessarily fits the Institute as it is. As I mention here >>128644912 I really don't find the Institute's goals to be very coherent. And they've already fucked up with the Gen 3 synths a lot: they don't understand their full capabilities (more or less that they're sentient -- I believe that the game very heavily implies that this is the correct view) or how to actually keep them all in line correctly. I mean, a truly competent Institute accounting for all synths would do far better than a recall code you have to say out loud in front of them. What about tracking chips that also allow for remote shutdowns or brain wipes/recalls?

I think they are just so focused on a strange goal that they're not properly going over all of the ramifications. In fact, based on how so many of them talk about creating a "better human," I'm actually more inclined to think that reproduction would be something they would want since they want synths to do everything humans do but better and even more.

Kellogg was human but none of the Institute would go to the surface to do work, Kellogg was the same age because he had Institute life extension treatments.
