I'm assuming that the first half of your post can be explained by the second half. The amount of freedom they're allowing with the first three months pretty strongly suggests that the game really opens the fuck up after that point, and since their promises about modding potential (the main 50 gigs of which Beagle didn't even have access to) are seemingly for once not bullshit just for /hype/ buzzwords, I think we can be cautiously optimistic

Go watch some of Solomon's older interviews. He literally has an unhealthy love for this franchise and desperately wants to do it proud. Even the the first game was a great success he got super shaken up when one of the original people that worked on old UFO defense said something to the effect of it just being 'alright'.

Im too far at LW, the game keeps dragging because I want a Firestorm fleet that is capable of taking on Very Large UFOs.
These missions are getting out of hand. My S-Team is the only group able to take on landed UFOs from up from medium, terror missions are now called slaughterfest 2017 and alien abductions are BDSM meetups. I've just survived base assault and lost half of my guys holding the line for 2 hours, I even lost my double nigerian engineer twins. R.I.P Kayodes.
I literally cannot train anything below Corporal anymore due to some faggot alien always sensing their presence.

This must be why XCOM 2 is canon, I'm simply getting the feeling that I cannot win.

If it is to end, may it end in flames. I will certainly port some guys from this to XCOM 2, so many lucky heroes have been made in this campaign.

I respectfully disagree. There was a depth to the tactical game which is rare to the point of nonexistence in turnbased games excepting a few. Even earlygame, you have tactical options besides rooty tooty rifle shooty which was exactly what vanilla lacked. Some variety in how you can tackle situations to mix things up. Most of the time - not counting the air game, that was shittily balanced on higher difficulties no matter who you ask - whenever I fucked up it felt like my fault, and that's saying something for a game which primarily relies on dicerolls to decide outcomes. There was always the "but if I'd have brought X guy/item/perk I could've done it, should've planned ahead"-feel which made it immensely satisfying when it went your way.

It also captured the feeling of managing an army rather than a squad pretty well, because of the need for using different lineups almost every mission, but because of the long-ass campaign time you still get attached to them as individuals. As far as overhaul mods go, those achievements are way enough to make it stand out.

The airgame is a classic complaint which I dont think anyone really disagrees with.
My biggest gripe has to be the length, even with Dynamic War (or NSLW a while back).
I think having 8 MEC classes is too much, they do not feel distinct enough and I would have rather taken 4. 8 soldier classes however is great.
I think having 5 weapon tiers is too many, I'd have pulse and lasers combined.
Some of the items feel needless.
Drones as an enemy in the earlygame are just boring and dull, they just serve to frustrate until you get a rocketeer or engineer who can reliably nuke them.
Seekers with high DR and defense are another nitpick, I dont see the role they represent beyond wasting my time. They aren't threatening but they are extremely tanky.
Lategame grind.

There's a couple that sprung to mind, and they are purely subjective. They are just some things that for me and only for me are annoying.
Really my biggest complaint is the length, I'd have gladly taken a significantly shorter campaign with some researches combined and that sort of stuff. After finishing my Brutal/Honestman back in B14 I just havent had the strength to get a new one really rolling. It is too long even with a second wave option.

True, LW has made the error of "Difficulty because of difficulty". At some points it is forgivable, but at some aspects it is really just Dark Souls 2 tier desing mistake.

Ayyrgame got harder, yet we barely take any measures to step up our own to match. Is this code limitation or a desing mistake is hard for me to say since I know nothing of the code.

Ayylien pod changes were nice until you start simply seeing a legions of the same unit over and over again, it stops being fun and immersing and becomes a question of who has the larges flyswatter

Item repair was a good idea, but horrible excecution. If left on you simply get shat on by the game for using your supplies. Especially since they did nothing to revamp the amount of items you get for a creation process. Still get only 1 weapon for a shit ton of resources invested, when you could with 2 workshops get 2 or even 3 to counterbalance repairs.

These are in the end personal preferences but to me they just felt a bit off in the end.
Overall Long War is an improvement.

Long War made it's biggest mistake when it decided to balance it's difficulty around the tactics of Beagle and other players offering feedback on the nexus. This is the worst thing you can do when balancing a game as it removes the fun aspect of the game. Not every nerf was a bad one mind you but MANY were focused on increasing difficulty for diffculty's sake which is really bad design path to go down. Never balance your game around a few min maxers because your game will become tedious for no reason.

I'm not entirely sure how you would balance the difficulty up without doing that but I guess it would involve something like decreasing squad size instead of specifically targeting a tactic someone uses.

Well exactly, that's the problem with LW being the only overhaul mod. It adds depth but it also adds grind, filler and sooner or later you will get bored of playing the same maps over and over again.
Let's hope XCOM2 overhaul mods will have options for both of us shall we? If someone wants an epic 100 hour length campaign then let them. I'll settle for a 20-30 hour thanks.

Yup, its my biggest personal gripe with it.
However even in this general a lot of people have burnt out of LW, shitpost about magnificent design and call JL out for his hubris. The core design philosophy of LW at points was "difficulty for the sake of difficulty".
I like the mod I really do.
But I, and other people do not feel like it is "fantastic". Because fantastic in numbers is like 9/10 or 10/10. And when compared to other overhaul mods like OpenXCOM or Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 it doesn't come close.
It is a solid mod hamstrung by technology. 7-8/10 is a more legit score in my opinion. good, not fantastic.

I think the procedural map system is a huge opportunity for overhaul mods. If there really are tools to manipulate maps with, it should be possible to do things like grafting map templates together to get maps four times the normal size. And once you have that, you can really go to town with squad sizes.

I shitpost about magnificence and JL being a cunt, but I still love the mod. Difficulty for the sake of difficulty is a bad design philosophy, we agree there. But I don't feel that LW uses it, or even goes out of its way to fuck you more than you have an oppurtunity to counter. It's hard as balls on higher difficulties, but it isn't unfair. This - to people who played it already being comfortable with game mechanics, at least - is a great thing. It requires an investment in terms of time and wiki-reading, sure, but it is immensely rewarding because of it. This does not make it worse than OpenXCOM, they're the same in that regard. That happens because of other reasons.

Comparing it to OpenXCOM in terms of what they add to their respective games though, I can honestly say I feel LW adds more replayability to its game than openxcom does. This is mostly because OpenXCOM has the better starting material, but that doesn't make it less true. If you look at LW in terms of what it does for its base game, then yes - it's a fantastic mod.

JA 2 1.13 or OpenXCOM being excellent does not make LW worse of a mod, nor does you preferring one over the other.

You can say that you therefore dislike it for making the game too long, but given that that's its primary goal, it seems a bit self-centred.

When you say "I don't like what this mod tries to do" rather than "I don't like the way in which this mod tries to do it", you're only pointing out that you have a difference of taste with the mod's intended audience.

I watched almost any video and there is a pattern.
For Veteran and Commander difficulty:

Easy = 3 pods, 6 enemies
Moderate = 3 pods, 8 enemies
Difficult = 3 pods, 9 enemies (very strange, maybe a bug or not blanced)
Very Difficult = Don't know.

On Legendary:
Easy = 3 pods, 8 enemies
Moderate = 3 pods, 9 enemies (very strange, maybe a bug or not blanced)
Difficult = Only saw Avenger defense with 5 pods, 15 enemies
Very Difficult = Don't know

Short roundup:

Plasmarifle make 7-9 damage
Tier 3 armor give 6 HP and 1 armor.
Plasma grenade do 5-6 damage and shredd 2 armor.
The suit at the bottom give 2HP and heal you every turn for 2HP, max 8HP per mission.

I very much don't think LW is perfect or wouldn't have some design issues going for it, but the ~200 hours that I sank into LW in 2015 was hands down the best gaming experience I've had in years. There were some hours of tedium and frustration in there for sure, but for the most part it was pure unadulterated fun.

Admittedly I never really played purely vanilla LW, my main campaign ran on DW 0.6 and I used a good amount of further modding and INI tweaks to cut down on the more BS aspects of LW (eg. I removed air game crits completely) which I had learned about from following Beagle for a long-ass time before getting into LW proper myself.

That really goes to show another great aspect of Long War, though - that the team did realize that not everyone will like their vision and design choices of things, so they made LW itself easy to mod (well, as easy as they could) and tweak further to your own liking.

I haven't played DD or Neo Scavenger but as someone who has sunk dozens of hours into FTL I can attest that you can definitely Git Gud(tm) in that game. Back when I started playing it I could barely make it into the final sector on Easy, but as you get better you can definitely end up winning on Normal the vast majority of time.

Admittedly one part of learning how to play is learning to reset when you get completely fucked over by RNG in Sector 1, but that's not really much different from resetting at the start of Ironman Impossible in XCOM when you get completely fucked over by the RNG.

All vanilla LW nicknames, I didn't change any of them. I didn't manually name the characters either, I used the namelist generator so I'd get them at random.

Also, berets are great and the campaign was a great success.
