Poor planning, same problem happened with the P4 manga, P4MC was named Souji Seta, and was depicted as nihilistic whelp. Then they made a proper design document for his character across all media, giving birth to Yu Narukami: the physical embodiment of the wacky third dialogue option.

Manga's are kind of "shit out" in japan, they don't really give a shit about continuity or integrity. Not that the illustrators and writers don't WANT to do it justice, it's just that they aren't given a shitload of cooperation or oversight, so things go awry.

The game has three major parts
FREE TIME: Divided into: after school, evening and sunday afternoon, free time is a point at which you can run around the open world and choose to either advance time by hanging out with friends or by doing various activities like fishing, eating at a restaurant, going to a part time job or studying. Some of your friends are linked to you by "clubs" and some are part of part time jobs like being a hospital janitor or a tutor. the better friends you are with people the better they will assist you in combat, and the more bonus XP you get for fusing personas of their specific type. Some social links and jobs require your "characteristics" to be leveled up, you have five of these. "knowledge", "courage", "understanding", "expression" and "dilligence"
DUNGEONEERING: also known as "into the television", you explore procedurally generated mazes until you reach the end and save the person who has been kidnapped. this is the "game" part but if it was to stand on it's own without the free time the game would be very boring. it's a standard turn-based combat with combat initiative decided by who hit who in the overworld first. every enemy and party member has strengths and weaknesses to elements. hitting an element doesn't really do additional damage, instead it knocks them down, giving whoever just dealt the damage an additional turn. if you knock every enemy down you get to do an "all out attack" which sweeps the entire field for a large amount of damage.
FUSION: fucking fusion man, it's all made up and the rules don't matter. basically you get pokemon when you finish battles sometimes. if you push two or more of these pokemon together you get a different pokemon, what governs it is fucking beyond me, it's archaic. this is technically only a single menu in the velvet room but it is a sizable chunk of your playtime. Proper fusion can make you basically invincible if you play your cards right.

well, the priestess should be pretty easy even if you haven't done much Tartarus, just make sure you're not using a persona that's weak to Ice. Rotate your saves, a week before a full moon will give you enough time to grind yourself to shit in tartarus if you can't manage the next boss. You typically want to be as far in tartarus as it'll let you before the next full moon.

Oh yeah I should have mentioned. this game is harder than p4. important differences include: knock down skips your next turn, hitting an enemy that is knocked down gets them back up, if the main character is knocked down you cannot issue orders and essentially are completely out of control for two turns.

As for exploits? have an apsaras and an orhpeus in your mind at the same time and you cna use a spell called "cadenza" which is a full party heal that also increases your evade chances. it's fucking top-tier even late game because i think it heals percentage. unfortunately it also uses SP percentage so hold it for special occassions.
