What's the game about? What is your game bringing to the table? Get ready for a lot of saltiness because AGDG is butthurt about platformers because platformers took their dad away.
>>

Looks good anon, what's the game? Engine?

Pretty fucking sure what I'm doing is a lost cause, but one can hope.

I have 2-D Zelda like layout with randomly generated doors that you can walk through into new rooms. My Zelda like sprite is animated as well (poorly but its close to satisfactory). All images/sprites are just placeholder right now while I'm learning.

So I'm working on metal detector mechanic, in Unity. It works by having an object with a large collider on it, when an object enters the collider it gets the distance of the object from the metal detector, the distance is then used to change the rate of beeping. What do you think agdg?

Not in particular, but it would be nice.

I want to make a bit of an elite clone so I'm going for that kind of elite style of ship but I don't want to just copy and paste the cobra.

My thinking here was a bulkier version of the delta glider from orbiter, and for the underside to be a lifting body/heat shield.

Done tonight:

>v-sync
>camera (will probably need a lot of further refining later on)

To do tomorrow:

Without resorting to spamming dozens of enemies, any good advice on how to make missions longer? Even with my own incompetence, it only takes two or three minutes to bomb five ground targets and shoot down eight jets. I'm worried that making the AI too good will be frustrating for the player as their shots keep missing, but just increasing their health means forcing the player to plug away for a while regardless of how good the player is

>>
>>127010882
>>127010929
Yeah, I figure five ground targets isn't too many, I'll probably have more. I'm also working on a way to make AI planes gravitate towards specific points on the map; this would help create localized dogfights around the map that would force the player to move around. I think that would be conducive to secondary objectives

>>127011005
>non-combat between battles

This is actually something I've been planning since day one. I figure it'll be kind of a traditional RPG hub world, where the player can visit shops and talk to people and get missions and all that. It's also where I'd do the bulk of the storytelling, since I think dialogue would get in the way in combat

>>127011215
I plan on that. I'm working on a targeting reticule so that the player has a decent idea where their bomb will land; until I implement that, I'm leaving them spammable for accuracy's sake
>>
>>127011327

Sum up your progress this last week in one image

I'll start
>>
Ok, if anyone here ever wants any job remotely relating to programming they need to know what fizzbuzz is

Simple program, takes the numbers 1-100 and:
if it's a multiple of 3 (and not 5), outputs Fizz
if it's a multiple of 5 (and not 3), outputs Buzz
if it's a multiple of 15, outputs FizzBuzz
otherwise, outputs the number

show me your _neatest_ fizzbuzz

(this is a standard interview question)
>>
>>127014118
fizzbuzz:
count from 1 to 100
everytime you encouter a number divisible by 3 you replace the number by fizz
everytime you encounter a number divisible by 5 you replace it by buzz
If a number is divisible by 3 and 5 you replace it by fizzbuzz

1,2,fizz,4,buzz,fizz,7,8,fizz,buzz,11,fizz,13,14,fizzbuzz, 16, ....

It was a popular programming task to do in job interviews.
>>
>>127013563
Because it frequently precedes all qualities of programming advice and you are experiencing confirmation bias.

I'm not sure if the leaves should be moving, to be honest. It's a bit distracting and doesn't bring much of important to the overall mood.

Not to mention, the animation just doesn't really work, but if it did work as you intend it too, it would make the world seem more "alive", which probably isn't the kind of aesthetic you're going for, I imagine.

Is there any good way to find edges on level geometry without resorting to raycasts?
Say the player needs to vault over many different objects of differing sizes (for simplicity's sake, let's say those are all rectangular) and I want the vault animation to "snap" to the top edge of that object.
I could manage to do that with raycasts, but that seems inefficient.

Well sort of yes, the way it's done, is the missile applies thruster force to change its trajectory. The system is not as complicated as the ship itself uses, but it is still fully physics based, there is no magical manual velocity or position changing

It's basically physics force applied to a rigidbody on a specific vector which i calculate via vector math based on what exactly i need. You also need to take mass of the object into equation of course and for stabilizer thrusters it gets very tricky if you want to be very realistic and apply the force directly at their location, (since you have to calculate the rotation vector and again add the mass in etc)

Be sure not to trust them. Heard a lot of people getting burned. You can help avoid that shit by either using someone who's trusted (will probably be more expensive...) and by splitting up the work load. For every chunk of pictures they draw, you release that chunk of cash to them. Helps ensure they see it all the way through.

You can get them to send thumbnails too, to prove they actually drew the shit you requested.

because to an artist all programmers are the same while to a programmer an artist is pretty much unrepleaceable.
So if you have to pick between sooo many equeally replaceable people you are going to pick te one who pays the most
>>
>>127020070
That's weird to think about because in the business field it's pretty much the contrary.

Programmers will always find a job if they ever wanted to change their field. Some companies propose higher paychecks to some programmers so they join their company, whereas an artist will have a LOT of trouble finding an actual job, because you only need a few, even if they are not replaceable.

What I love about artists is that they don't even allow you to browse their art now.
>>
>>127020070
That's only true if the programmer has no prototype, which they definitely should if they're looking for free art
>>
I find it funny how people who draw pictures are called artists.
>>
>>127019478
They're worth something. But they're worth a lot less than you think they are.
Also any dev that is actually dedicated enough to make a full game is already making their own ideas. Nodevs will never have enough dedication to make more than a small prototype of an idea they stole. In very rare cases maybe a dev will implement some small idea you had into their game, but it's never them making your full game before you do.

Look at Minecraft, back when Notch was posting on /v/ gamedev threads no one was stealing the Minecraft idea because no one was dedicated enough to. Then it suddenly became the most popular game in the world and everyone is trying to clone it now.

>>
>>127020708
I was not talking about the indie industry, but rather about industries in general.

It is true that you have a better time being a programmer than an artist in our current times. Maybe that artists are stars but programmers are the roadies. Without roadies, there aren't any shows going on. A roadie is versatile and can work for a lot of people, whereas an artist is often obliged to fit in a hole because there are so few of them.

It really is.

Look how salty these threads are.
Pop open any game on Steam, of any quality, and look at the retarded/unfair/unrealistic negative reviews.
Look at the postmortems(recaps of how development went) of games around the internet

It's just... You have to be strong.
>>
>>127021889
It's not hard. It's long.

You have to be dedicated to work on a project consistantly.

You have to make compromises on your strong and weak points. A lot of us here are good at programming but complete garbage at making visual stuff.

If you didn't give up and actually finished your game despite all the obstacles you encountered, you have to sell your game with a non-existent beginning fanbase.

This is why a lot of people actually give up on making games. Or at least, making them alone.

This is not a choice. Working on menus is a part of what makes the game the game. If you wanna slack off then don't complain when people leave a negative review on your game.
>>
>>127021889
You need to accept a few things:
You must accept that you wont be making any fun games for probably months. And when you finally make a fun game it might only be fun for a few minutes. It will take years before you're good enough to make the dream games you want to make.
You must accept that gamedev isn't always fun. There are times when you run into problems that are difficult to solve and there are times when you might need to refactor a lot of code and hope it all goes well.
You must accept that you wont make money. You might make money many years from now if you've made a really good game. But making games is not an easy money making scheme.

View a game as a computer.

It's better to have the same " power " everywhere rather than have a very strong point and a very bad point, because people will only see the bad point, like computers will be slow if you have an above average component in it.

graphics > music > sfx

All my favourite games have memorable music, sound effects really are secondary.
But all music does is make a good game amazing, the cream on top. The foundation is graphics/gameplay.

I am new to gamedev so right now this idea feels outside my scope, but I've been thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of the pov in common first, third, and top down shooters compared to each other.

I'd like to see a game where the player can pick two of those three pov's and have the ability to toggle between them during gameplay, yes it's basically a mini map, but I'd take that away.

As for verticality in level design, first and third would have the advantage over top down, but with no mini map, top down would potentially have the advantage of seeing them before they do.

Any glaring balance issues you can think of /adgd/? Would you play a game like this?

Is there a torrent anywhere for the Udemy Unity course?

I ain't paying 200 for that shit, but a buddy of mine who works at EA Redwood says he's seen a lot of it, and it's definitely an excellent step-in to learning at minimum C# and basic game design.

inb4
>Unity
>Unity tutorials

I know there's free ones, but a lot of them are fragmented / jump around a lot, and often don't assume basic skill knowledge / gloss over important things.

I did a few of the Unity tutorials in 5.3, and had to stop because there were so many discrepancies in the C# syntax, and was having hours of frustration with the Space Shooter tutorial. My asteroid, when coming down the X axis from the dead center would explode at 8 points up on the Z axis. Even went as far as redoing the entire project over twice, and still got the issue, following every step diligently and to a T. Got frustrated as shit after 10 hours and said fuck it.

Basically need something to baby step me through shit, and the Udemy course looks good. I'd buy it for 50 but I just paid my car and I'm broke as shit.

I'm using RPG Maker to make a robot fighting game. I'm taking forever just to get a proof of concept done, but I almost have a functioning system.

Once I have the system, I'm thinking I'll do a Pokemon/Medabots type of game where you fight your robot against other robots and get spare parts/new software/etc to upgrade and become the robot fighting champion.

The main idea though, is you can only control a set amount of limbs per turn. So you can expose your arms to punch/blast/grapple, etc, but as they get damaged, you might want to consider focusing on your other arm, or leg, to block, do fancy footwork for defence, run backwards to be temporarily immune to melee damage but still take blaster damage, etc.

Is this idea workable or totally retarded?

Anybody here use Clickteam Fusion? I'm having a weird situation with collisions. It's supposed to do damage to me whenever I collide with an enemy (the blue boxes). I turned on my hitbox to make sure it was correct. The number in the top right is health.

Anyway, the issue is, I get collisions fine when I run into something from the side, but if I land on it from above, I can literally jump in and out of it without a collision being detected. Pic related should illustrate what I mean.

Help me out? I'm just completely bewildered.

I totally understand that. A ton of games have subpar art that gets completely overhauled in the final product.
Explain the 10/10 missiles. Are you an artdev with no motivation when making the ship? Did you luck out? Stolen assets from the unity store? Are you a particle wizard? Artbro but you only commissioned him for missiles? Missile enthusiast?

Different types of limbs can get different components. For example, Blaster Arms can get energy, kinetic, flame attachments, etc.

Do you know how infinite scrolling levels work in 3d games?
I know that Super Mario 64's infinite staircase just keeps teleporting you reach a certain trigger, but what about, say, the second Sonic vs Shadow fight in Sonic Adventure 2?
You both just seem to keep walking forward forever without any apparent teleport. Do they just hide it well and just perfectly port your position, the enemy's position and all the falling platforms in their current states? Or is the stage actually just a loop that's large enough that you can't see the curve?
>>
>>127036376
You don't need a curve. Think of how Pac-Man works with going off one side and back on the other. Now imagine if the camera followed Pac-Man up close. You wouldn't be able to tell it wasn't infinitely large.

The game being in 3d doesn't prevent that, or necessitate actual curving. The game just puts a new one up ahead when you start to approach the edge of the map you're on.
>>
How do I make a game that will get me in good with the libs and therefore get free coverage?
>>
>>127036625
Become a victim then make a game
>>
>>127036625
Extremely simplistic art and mechanics are a must.

Add a unique, quirky artstyle, but make sure it's just to cover your lack of artistic talent. Try using a color wheel and doing the opposite of what it tells you to compliment different colors.

Make it nearly impossible to lose. It shouldn't even really be a game, but rather, a journey.

Imply rape, abuse, etc in the character backstories. All of them.

Create an online persona where you're a black immigrant lesbian to shill it.

I wish more games had silly reload animations like instead of pulling the empty magazine out of the well with the player character's left hand all professionally like you see in COD, BF4, Halo, and everywhere else, the hand stays put and he just shakes the rifle until the magazine falls out. And then to reload, the left hand grabs a magazine out of his breast pocket then gives it a little toss above the rifle, then he quickly spins the rifle upside down and catches the magazine in the well then spins it back and its ready to fire.

Also, I want to see more feminine female reloading animations like in Perfect Dark Zero. Where are all the spy shooters at? Are there even any James Bondish FPSs lately with cocky attitude reloading animations?

$200 won't get you far in terms of professional quality hardware.I'd suggest waiting on the keyboard and get a nice mic setup first since good keyboards tend to be a lot more expensive.
As for a mic, you can get away with a blue snowball or yeti with a pop filter. I suggest the yeti if you can afford it. Do not forget the pop filter. Also, make sure you have a room in your house with decent acoustics you can record in. Worst case, some people will put cardboard boxes on their head when recording voicework.

nodev trying to be yesdev here, using Gamemaker Studio (because free). making a shitty sandbox environment to learn some stuff. i've got rudimentary movement figured out and i read some tutorials with code on populating a level with blocks so i have some terrain.

i've got a collision issue that i'm not sure how to fix. when landing diagonally on a block, i get stuck and freeze in place for a second or so, and then instantly land on the block below. my collision boxes are the same size as the sprites, and using code like:
if(place_meeting(x+2,y+1, obj_block)){hsp -=1;}
if(place_meeting(x-2,y+1, obj_block)){hsp +=1;}
if(place_meeting(x+2,y-1, obj_block)){vsp +=1;}
if(place_meeting(x-2,y-1, obj_block)){vsp +=1;}

doesn't fix it. i can post more of my hideous movement code if it helps, but it's simple input and adding speed when not colliding using place_meeting. Is there a way to code out this kind of collision?
google results + gamemaker forums results say to fix my sprite collision boxes and to make it check further ahead than 1 block (but this creates a gap between player and object)

It should? I can try it in a bit.
Unfortunately, the engine was designed with the idea most developers would be using Blueprint so it might be kind of awkward to do. Some things I'd normally do in code I've found myself doing in blueprint just because it's less of a hassle.

I've been working on adding engine functionality to support mods. I've pushed out the doom and marathon asset definitions and other game data into it's own mod folder. Pic shows separate, additional Doom and Marathon weapon categories (top). And the actor picker showing a colored box in the top left indicating what mod it belongs to.
No filtering of mod types yet though.

A soundcard, a DAW that isn't crap (FL Studio won't do for recording), a good soundspace (No, your bedroom is not one) and a budget microphone that's not garbage, preferably a condensor microphone.

Microphone is the most important part, don't cheap out on it. You will also need a pop-filter. If you do want to record in your bedroom, spend some time learning about acoustics and invest in sound dispersal and proofing equipment. DAWs you can find for free, ProTools would work fine, but it is software for dinosaurs, so be ready to be infuriated by the interface for a couple of months. Soundcard is important, but you really only need one for the input, and maybe phantom power, it depends on what microphone you buy.

If you're not going to make music, I don't see the need for a MIDI Keyboard, but they are useful anyway.

For recommendations I would recommend Cubase for DAW with one of the Steinberg/Yamaha CI-2 external soundcards, but you haven't got the budget for both those.
Microphone depends on your voice, if you have a friend with a good microphone, borrow that to record you voice and look at it in an EQ or a spectrogram to get an idea of how you sound, then use that information when looking at microphone responses to determine what is right for you (I.E If you have a really bassy voice, get a microphone with less response to bass, because contrary to popular opinion, there's such a thing as too much bass).

Microphones are a big subject, you should dive a bit into it before making a purchase. You get a mics for $200 that sounds good enough that most people are going to be okay with the sound quality.

...I am using BP. Okay, to rephrase and hopefully make it clearer:

Last time I was trying to do this (in UE4.7), a ForEach node would not iterate through an array of Structs. It just simply wouldn't; it pretends to and throws no errors, but acts as if it "completed" immediately. Anything that's connected to Loop Body wouldn't execute. At least, that's what I remember the issue being.

The result is that that huge mess of green lines was because I couldn't break a struct and iterate the parts inside it, then reassemble it, so I had to manually break the struct, then manually break the struct inside it, then set the values like that, then reassemble it. Resulting in 9x5 lines, because 9 Module structs in the Weapon struct with 5 ints for each Module.

Blueprints are shitty for one major reason which is only major if your game needs it like mine.
You can not sort arrays in blueprints so you need to make your own sort function.

So make a good game instead and release the demo alongside the kickstarter/give the studio you're pitching it to a demo.

aww hes finally coming around lol. well theres always that "game designer" advice of yours to give out, im sure people will listen to that hahaha yeah right the only people listening to you are the feds waiting to pounce on you for what you did
>>
>>127055005
A lot of people point out the art, but I didn't think the art was that bad. The biggest flaw to me was that most of the characters were annoying and I didn't feel invested in their stories but I had to pretend to like them to get the best ending.
>>
I need a way to balance high tier weapon modifiers in my dungeon crawler.

Should I introduce negative effects for high tier modifiers like "x% increased attack speed, consumes x% more resources"? It'd fix my balancing issues, but I don't want the player to be frustrated by the negative effects.
>>
The thing that makes him angriest is just IGNORING him. Keep it up guys!
>>
>>127055527
As long as the negative effects don't outweigh the good, it should be fine. This is how most games are balanced.

You could also impose funny restrictions, like being unable to move and attack in the same turn, locking out magic for way increased phys damage or vice-versa, etc
>>
>>127055527
Don't you want the player to feel increasingly more powerful as the game goes on? You could do the Borderlands route of "everything gets better at every higher level".

Alternatively really high cooldowns on OP weapons?
>>
>demo asset store item will build but not export final data

Keep digging that hole deeper, it seems to be your way. Now that everyone has seen the truth, and watched you lie through your teeth and roll over with your legs in the air when called out on it, you're to be ignored.

glug glug clink clink reek

hopefully you wont be too drunk to deal with those "special friends" i called ;))
>>
>>127055845
Hmm, I could have passives that decrease the effect of negative modifiers so they'll still feel ungodly powerful at high levels.

>>127055903
I don't really want high cooldowns since it's an FPS dungeon crawler. It's meant to be fast paced. I could just let the player get ridiculously strong and just make the enemies match them in strength.
>>
