A mecha weapon that gradually becomes stronger the further you get through the game, and each powerup is a new additional mecha form/morph like for example a sword, bow or grappling hook form, which then give you the ability to break through barriers you couldn't get through before, allowing you to move to new levels.

Because eventually its both easier to look at and to write up your own actual movement system.

You really should try to move away from using DnD as much as possible because its limiting, and cumbersome to use when you get past the early stages of a project.
>>
>>126822864
If the splash screen just said "Unity" it wouldn't be a problem. The problem is the splash screen says "PERSONAL EDITION" and you can't release a game with that garbage.

So I was wondering if you guys could help me organize my code. I want to write a console so I can edit the game as I run it (it'll be an interface for my Lua bindings). I also want to have a logger, so I can print debug information without writing to std::cout (which slows things down), rather write them at close or to a file or something (or hell, just draw it to the screen). And then, coupled with the first one, I want to have a manager class that handles the loading of scripts and manages the Lua state.

How would you split all these up? They seem rather interrelated, so it's hard to come up with the dividing lines.

3ds max you can get full version for free for educational purposes. basically "we know that if you're not already established 3d modeller or a company that needs it you will probably not be able to afford it, so here have it for free, learn it well and make something of yourself"

photoshop just doesn't bother with piracy much, they make all their cash from companies, esp in the gaming and publicity industry.

going after pocket change money and throwing some peasants in jail would just make them look bad and they know it.

as long as you are not obviously making cash off of these programs, they won't bat an eye.

Something like this, maybe? If you're really only going to use the logger to print to the console then you might as well combine them, though.

I'd keep the scripting system separate, and have it print things in terms of logging like every other system.

Just make the file PNG with transparency, you don't need to worry about masking with a colour as alpha when it can take modern file formats. Unity's surprisingly unselective with what it'll take too, even accepts loading in non-power-of-two files, as horrible as that is.

Art is not something that can be learned. If you're lucky, you'll be born with it, in which case you can practice and get better. Or if you're less fortunate, you won't be born with it, in which case you will continue to practice all your life and never improve.

Wait, hold! Before you spend that money. Buy Avernum: Escape from the Pit and Avernum 2: Crystal Souls, instead of the full pack. Avernum 1, Avernum 2, Avernum 3, etc., are an older version. SS recreated 1 & 2 from the ground up with better controls and a generally more modern, nicer interface and better graphics than before.

I recommend just getting those two and waiting for the remake of 3 to come out.

And buy Avadon 1 & 2 if you want. Those are modern in themselves.

If you have to ask a question like this, I don't think you know even the first thing about gamedev.

Just start with gamemaker/unity and work your way from there. If you think you're too good for beginner stuff, skip that and learn pygame.

How are you moving it? I mean I'm assuming the player is controlled using three or four keys. Are the platforms controlled with the mouse, a key to toggle, two keys serving as a slider?
Do you select individual platforms or are all platforms controlled at once?

Other than that, if it's a straightforward Mario-style platformer, you look like you have a nice game ahead of you (assuming you can polish).
>>

I'm not sure the direction I want to take my game. I'm making an FPS with a 90s feel to it (so no health regen, very fast paced, not realistic at all). The game is entirely loot based though. You find random weapons and gear with prefixes and suffixes like you would in a diablo clone.

I need to decide before I do any more coding, should I make this into a rogue-lite where you lose everything and start from level 1 and run through proc gen maps with a few global-perks you pick up along the way
or
Should I make it so you have the same character through an entire playthrough?

Basically, should I make it more like a Diablo FPS or more rogue-like?

>>126840231
>>126839949
I might try to mix the two, who knows. Might just add a Rogue mode or something that has proc gen maps later on and design the levels for the story mode myself or find some decent level designer.

That sounds like a decent compromise. I for one am an advocate of procedural generation being able to produce "smart" maps.

This. Please this.

And to any of you other devs that intend on adding randomly generated stages to a game genre that normally doesn't feature it, just have it as an extra mode you can choose from because I can fucking guarantee you some good handcrafted levels will beat them.
>>
>>126840371
that's also another problem

i was thinking about the fact that you can only move the nearest platform from you and makes sure to indicate the ones that you can move so the player remember which are moveable
>>
Left and right arrow keys to move

What keys do I use to jump and shoot?
>>
>>126840508
And if you're courageous enough, this is also an occasion to let people do their own maps. That should be REALLY easy to do if you made a level editor for your own maps as well.
>>
>>126837906
I think the main concern isn't so much how you move the platform, but whether you plan on building the game so that the player moves platforms, advances, moves more platforms, advances again etc, or whether you should be walking/jumping through the level and moving the platforms at the same time?
>>
>>126840605
the only time I've ever seen good procgen generate interesting maps is the old XCOM games, which stitch together hand-crafted sections

It's from metropolis - "The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart" where the head isn't just a mind or intelligent or science, but also a common sense, savvy and wit.

plenty of games have gone for scanlines or projectors or typemachine looks, the problem is that the colors are too indistinct from the environment, and the environment is so busy that the symbols of the HUD just kinda blend into it. your HUD is effectively a camo print, and the ground in front of you is just more camo print but from a different pattern. you have literally invented a camouflage pattern. congratulations. give up game dev and go to /k/ and make money off of mallninjas

The one game you made that could have gone somewhere even though it was rock paper scissors died because it had no single player despite everyone telling you to include a single player mode. I mean if you were going to ignore everyone telling you

you could have at least listened to the people warning you against making a multiplayer dependent game. Neuro-Headsets are in the making, saw some video once where someone controlled a mouse with a prototype, and another documentation from a university that creates a Neuro-Headset for disabled people. Also a company named Emotiv is apparently creating one. I guess it will take another 10 years or something until it's ready so you can controll software completely with your mind.

You should be happy that it takes so much time until then though, because once technology like that is available for everyone, it won't be hard to create shit anymore like it is now, every faggot will be able to create art, 3d and games just by thinking about it, and your creations will be even more worthless, the market even more flooded. Ideaguys will literally become yesdevs. Enjoy it while you can.

punch the boss to the moon. your character then cockily reflects on the battle he thinks he's won because he punched the boss to the moon. but without a warning, a huge explosion happens. as the smoke clears, the boss is revealed to have returned from the moon, completely unharmed. then he punches you and you evaporate. fade to black, cut to the characters home planet where it's revealed that the character is survived by a wife and 2 children. you're now controlling one of his children and the actual main character of the game. a great excuse for a progression system.

There are many ways to do this, and it also depends on how well your animation should look like. You could do it like you said with empty hands, or use a dummy weapon mesh which is a child of your handbone while you make the animations and delete it before exporting the model later, or you could create an additional weaponbone for your animations and make your weapon object a child of that.

How do I make basic platformer gravity physics? Can someone psuedocode it up for me? Right now my code is:
> if the player presses the jump key and is touching the ground, increase their upwards velocity by 4
> if the player is not touching the ground, increase their downwards velocity by 0.1

It's extremely simple, but feels really floaty. Increasing the gravity from 0.1 to anything else makes the player fall like a rock and renders them unable to jump over stuff. What formulas do you guys use?

you need to understand that selling 3 apples for $1 each makes more money than selling 1 apple for $2.50,

you have an audience A that is willing to make a purchase at price X

if you multiply the price X by Y, you're gonna make more money if A(Y^-1) is smaller than your actual audience at price XY. notice how A is a function of X.

take your $12 blunder as an example. if you cut the price in half, you're gonna have 5 * 2, which is 10. are there more than 10 people willing to purchase your game for $6? if the answer is yes, you should objectively cut your price in half.

most of the time btw, this is always true because the audience grows exponentially as the price goes down simply because people are more willing to part with little money.

Rate my game plan:

A martial arts turn-based JRPG where you're a fighting robot and each "party member" is a limb. You can only have a limited about of limbs active at a time. At first, you can only use your head and one limb at a time because you're not a good fighter. As you progress, you get CPU cores that let you run more limbs per turn. You can switch it out so one turn you're using your right arm, the next you're using your left leg, etc.

The head only has skills like scanning, etc. Maybe cool eye lasers later on.

The arms can get spike upgrades, flamethrowers, missiles, punching upgrades, etc. If you're actively using two arms at the same time, you can do grapples. Arms can also block. Maybe you have a laser blaster on your arm instead which disables grapples but allows

Legs can get the same thing mostly, but also temporary buffs like jumping to make you immune to ground moves for a turn, or fancy legwork to increase punch damage for a turn.

I'm already working on it using RPG Maker

http://gameprogrammingpatterns.com/game-loop.html
tl;dr separate your physics and logic from your graphics (update FPS from display FPS). Your update loop can typically run much faster than the draw loop, in hundreds or thousands of FPS. Count time from the last update frame and adjust any calculations based on that, then you get stuff like:
position = position + speed * delta_time
speed = speed + acceleration * delta_time
Notice these are the exact basic equations of motion you should've learned in a middle school physics class.

Dude we've already tried explaining this to him before. More people are willing to pay $0.99 for a GUI game than are willing to pay $12. Enough that it makes sense to sell the game for $0.99. But whatever. He's a big deal and doesn't want poorfags playing his game.

If I could be of help, Dungeon & Dragons 4E did it the best. Every character have at least 2 at-will attack options and everything have a secondary effect together with damage.

This way:
- The player won't have that feeling of "I stun him OR deal damage to finish the battle faster?". Your attack can deal both. Same with healing, mitigating the Cleric (picking up ToEE) choice of "do I attack or do I heal?": Why not have an attack that heals a small amount of other character if you hit the enemy, as a inspiring attack ("we can do it!", since HP should never be meat points, but stamina+health+willpower)
- Tactical movement. Some attacks move the enemies or the allies in the battlefield, and this is a huge combat factor for flanking, removing wounded allies from peril and moving enemies into hazardous terrain. If one character have an attack that deals damage to the primary target and to an adjacent enemy, you sure want your other character to use an attack that allows you to move the enemy.
- Hazardous terrain. TRPG can be fun with only height and impassable terrain, but what about pits? "Use" the brazier to drop it and make a "Hot Coal" tile that deals damage to character passing or over it. Impassable, but line-of-sight terrain: You have to cross a bridge, but the passage is blocked by two thugs and several others are on the other side shooting with bows. Do you try to take the thugs first? Do you shoot back at the archers first? Do you use one of you move options to try to jump/teleport the chasm to melee the archers?

TOEE (who used D&D 3.5) did it good, but not excellent, as mostly the tactical options were using a chokepoint.

this only makes sense in a world where A) there are no fees (i assume the appstore does this by holding onto peoples credit cards and charging in bulk at month ends) and B) demand was actually tied to price as strongly as you seem to think it is, you can price a game at $0 and still make no sales, demand has to be created, and when it's created it will be weighted around your opening price. you start at .99 if you want to later discount it to .49 and end up owing paypal 20 cents in fees for every sale.

Doesn't 4E have a fairly free approach rather than being simulationist? I like the several-options-at-once approach, it sounds really neat. One thing I would like to have is some form of interrupt system where characters can act in the middle of other characters' turns if they previously chose a "guard" or whatever action.

>>
>>126857595
Beta testing it isn't the same as releasing it commercially so you should be okay. Nobody will be as upset if they can't find other players. It's when people pay money for a game that they can't play because nobody else is playing it that a multiplayer game will suffer.
>>
>>126858081
ahh i see, well im still a bit unsure what to do about it really, one of my biggest worries was that not enough people would play it so i was going to release a free version online with a cap of 100 people since thats the minumum amount you can subscribe for and if it kicked off or if people liked it i could release a full version of the game with more game modes, single player and a bunch of other stuff
>>
>>126857526
Believe me or not 4E is more narrativist than simulationist. When you use an attack that moves your target, you aren't move him per se, but changing the flow of battle, using an opportunity that wasn't there "gamistically"-speaking and creating an story along the Dungeon Master.

So its not that you can't make your target prone more than once per encounter, it is that the story opportunity only presented itself once.

This, off course, depends all on the style you seek with your TRPG.

singleplayer wont prevent no players in multiplayer.
the multiplayer problem (which im still trying to deal with, these guys like being shits to me and saying the game is die when it isnt even finished) is you have however many players you need for the game to be enjoyable and then you need a way to get that many people playing at the same time. it's simultaneously a design, marketing and PR problem.

That's what I meant. And the reason it seems hard to implement in a video game compared to real life.
