progress: Made the first playable prototype. Setup the code structure. Added 2 action platforms and 4 possible states(RGBY). Made the camera offset to where user is aiming. Added a shake system for the camera. Made xbone and mouse control. Time to start adding art, replay, a lot of particle effects and make a real level. Add combos, 360 noscope bonuses, score etc. Background is also a big one, I'll simulate one with flying blocks and shit. Also, need to tighten up controls a lot.

Draw from life or from photographs. Draw everything you see, background and all. Try to get the shapes and shading as close as possible to your source. Spend a good hour or two on it. Repeat a few times a day for 6 months and you will be at entry level concept artist (very very good). You have to pick hard and interesting source images though.

If you learn to imagine what you want to draw as basic shapes, than begin by drawing such, than you'll find it a lot easier. Just simple stuff

>circle for the head

Once everything is in place and forms the basis of what a human would look like, you draw over it to fill in the details. Which if you need help with that, porn is a very good research material. Not even kidding. Just go check out danbooru and study the different bodies you'll find there and how every little detail works and looks. With a little bit of practice, you'll have the hang of it, and while you may not be drawing masterpieces, your work will definitely show improvement.

you gotta experiment and explore a ton. unfortunately as many resources there are, art is still mostly self-discovery, so one must enjoy caressing and simultaneously creating forms, working to fully understand them. you have to really be aware, and try to search what it is that makes the wall look wrong. look at "right" looking walls and find the general things which make them look distinctly correct and good. this is not necessarily photos, unless a photo of a wall does in fact look good directly put in your game. as you slowly widen your artistic perspective, it'll be easier to see differences between what looks right and what looks wrong.

if you put that much time into one single activity, you're probably going to just burn yourself out. it's also likelier that without breaks, you will make mistakes and not have the necessary down time to see why you are making those mistakes and correct them (or worse, will cease to realize you're making that mistake as it becomes normal to you). this applies to all content creation fields and art media, not just 2d visual arts

artists who draw shit 24/7 do so because they like it, not out of some kind of duty. that said, you do have to "want it" -- it's not worth pouring your heart and soul into an activity that you don't even like and can just pay someone to do for you when you need it

I found that for drawing people, the Dynamic Drawing approach of making people up of curves and flat lines of force worked a bit more smoothly than doing it loomis-style with shapes. I'm still not even close to good but I improved way faster following Dynamic Drawing than I did trying to use Loomis shit

think of something like a rock -- it might be just a lump in terms of positive/negative space or whatever, but the shading and texture of it depends on how the rock behaves as a material. like if it's something brittle with lots of angular chips taken out of it, or if it's a very solid type of rock that's been smoothed by time. even something like drawing a road, you should note stuff like the glass dust used in asphalt to make it more reflective, or the grooves cut into concrete roads for traction and drainage.

it's because loomis teaches construction techniques. he didn't even use these construction techniques himself, in fact. they're just ways to make abstract the forms of the body, and i don't find them particularly helpful to study myself.
gesture is most important (which is what the dynamic drawing approach sounds like it teaches) when beginning to draw people, using some curves to show the weight and movement of a body.

I think the gesture approach is also a bit better because it's easier to get a handle on anatomy with it. using primtive shapes tends to look wrong, arms and legs aren't a series of perfect ovals joined by squares. People have flat bits and curvy bits depending on the pose, and I think that's where a lot of drawings looking "wrong" when starting out with drawing people as triangles and squares. Even most objects aren't that simple.

I have a 2d tilebased engine in opengl myself and i have struggled with this.
If it was 3D id do shadowmaps, but i don't think shadowmaps in 2d work.

I found this tutorial when trying to tackle this problem. It's the best one about dynamic shadows in shaders.

Normal maps are easy in 2d.
You have the color texture and the normal texture. Send both to a lighting shader, along with the lights position (and color optionally).

Textures have 3 channels, Red, Green and Blue. In normal maps, the channels represent the normal vector of each pixel. R is the X axis, G is the Y axis, and B is the Z (pointing away from the texture).
That's why normal maps are mostly blue.

In the shader, you get a vector from the current pixel to the light source and get the Dot product between this vector, and the normal map's vector.

Remember to normalize the vectors first!

Dot products need two vectors and return a number from -1 to 1. If the number returned is -1, the two vectors are pointing away and if the number returned is 1, the two vectors are pointing in the same way.

In this case, if the dot product returns 1, it means the vector of the normal map and the vector pointing the light are pointing in the same direction, meaning the vector from the normal map is pointing to the light. This pixel should be fully lit.

If it returns -1, the normal vector is facing away from the light, but you don't want it negatively lit, you clamp the value between 0 and 1.

this value, clamped between 0 and 1, represents the amount of light the surface is receiving. Now you multiply this value by the color in the color/diffuse texture and you get the final pixel's color.

I think it'll depend on the enemy, but probably dark colors with a scrolling texture kind of thing. Something that helps differentiate the foreground characters but without detracting the eye too much hopefully.

Right now I'm working on house interiors. I just removed all the hard-coded stuff and replaced it with a house level editor that exports to json and reads in json definitions for all the objects. What should I do now? A few other things were broken in the switch to 16x16 tiles (since before I was hard-coding the town-generation to a certain tile size, but then I had to make the roads be more tiles since 4 tiles in 16x16 is too low, so I rewrote part of the towngen to take that all as parameters, except I just commented out the car pathing graph generation so I'll need to adapt that... or alternative I could just use the tile-based pathing for cars too? Might be kinda weird though.

Trust Unity and let it do the lifting.
Rather than hardcoding stuff, create prefabs with scripts attached to them, then use the editor to manually drag resources you want to use into the scripts variables.

Refactored a few things and it's saving me so much time and hassle now.

To expand on that. I've been using a lot of singleton classes that act as repositories for information.
I've been setting them up so that when the prefab awakes, it sets itself as the instance and initializes whatever it needs. Then from a static context, I can call "Singleton.Whatever()" and get information that behaviour would have.

The only issue that could happen is if you don't put the script in a scene, in which case you've already fucked up and it's pretty simple to fix.

I have a folder with scripts that need to go in every scene, and certain components rely completely on certain prefabs I put in the scene (like some settings that I adjust through game objects rather than hard coding them) so they wouldn't function either way without the given script already existing

It's the same thing with sprites, really. Sprites are often pixel art because it's the easiest and doesn't consume a lot of your time. That's the same thing with music and sound effects.

As a musicbro, here is why people go for chiptune in their games:

1. You only need a tracker. No need to learn an entire DAW and its functions since you will only use a few of them.

2. Samples are generated on the go. No need to search the internet for 10.000 sample libraries.

3. EQing and mixdown are WAY easier to perform on chiptune, because you just take a few simple waves as instruments and you don't spend hours on EQing stuff so it doesn't sound cluttered.


And, as sprite making, devs will often try and justify their minimalistic choice because " it reminds them of the good old days ". But most of them ( Me included for sprites ) simply don't have the time and patience to learn how to do something else.

We learn quite a lot to be honest, but a lot of things are out of scope of use in a game. There's no need to set up an entire SQL database for a game for example, and network stuff is almost always presets you make and reuse in all of your projects, except if your project is making a network structure for a specific location.

I'd say that school teached me how to conceive a project too. How to organize yourself in a specific task is one of the most important thing I could have ever learned in my life, and I still fail at it to this day, though.

I consider it pretty much finished now, I added the suggestions someone made yesterday with saving the player's best score, reducing how many points you get so that it's easier to follow, and adding a slight indication when the button is pressed.

I kept a tiny score bonus you get for successfully hititng your color 8 times in a row (a "full circle"), because I think it could contribute that "I'm close to getting a score bonus!" feeling that can help build tension.

I feel like it's still missing something in the juice department but I'm not sure what, I'm not sure screen shakes or explosions and shit are really appropriate here...

I never used GameMaker, I rather code. When you code something, you always decompose every task in a function. It makes it so you stay focused on small objectives rather than be intimitated with the amount of tasks you have to do.

It's the same for everything in life, really. When you look at things in a " small series of task " way, life is a lot easier for yourself.

Originally I didn't have the ondestroy, but I added it because I really shouldn't just let that stuff sit there.

Right now, everything sets up itself in its Awake method. If that takes too much time, I'll have them individually initialize themselves when they are called for.
That'll probably come a bit later since my current idea was to have the entire battle system's elements and scripts loaded at the beginning of every scene, then using clever tricks to not have to switch scenes when entering combat. That way I don't have to remember where NPCs and shit where walking. And I was going to do something similar for the menu system.

If it ends up being too slow, I'll rework it later on. For now it isn't too much, so long as the transitions between scenes in my game don't end up taking more than about 1/4th-1/2 a second which I doubt would happen.

If I understand what you want to do then you would use additive scene loading.
However I must warn you that Unity has always had shit support for additive scene loading so lightmapping/navigation/occlusion are going to be constant headaches. You also have to manually clean up after anything you want deleted.

Way more background shit needed to make this work than it deserves, but it's coming out nicely.

When telling the chat box to show itself, you can feed it a request object that can tell it to show the left or right portrait or both, an enum that tells it what portrait to use for each side, an override on the background behind the character picture if you want to override it.
You can also feed it a template object that contains sprites to reskin the whole thing if you want, so you can have one guy use a normal box and a bad guy use some evil looking box.

When you want it to type text out for the user, you feed it a request object that tells it what string id to type out (all my strings are indexed and stored so I can centralize all text), and any overrides you want such as text speed (overriding the player's default setting), text color, font, etc

At the moment, you don't actually have to start having the box type things as soon as it appears. You could do a pause if you want to. Not sure what that could be used for, but my game event system will just wrap both the "turn the chatbox on" and "start typing" into a single function for most cases.

Actually rereading your post I think I misunderstood what you wanted to do. It sounds like you'd rather keep everything in memory, so your choices are pretty much to either deactivate big game object hierarchies for each gamemode, or set them all to different layers and either swap cameras or change the layers on the main camera. I used the later in a game I shipped.

I was going to bypass that completely by having most of the objects I need already there, but disabled.

Getting your game know depends entirely on how you approach your marketing.

Simple mindest to adopt: You don't have to spam your game, people HAVE to do it at your place.

How to do this is entirely your move. You could abuse social media and make clever moves for your games. ARGs are for example an efficient way for social media to know your game, but it's time consuming to make one.

Efficiency is also at work here. If your work is inspired from another game, then try to advertise in groups susceptible to like your game because they played that other game.

For example, if you would make a RPG with endearing characters, deep story and minimalistic gameplay, just like Undertale, then advertising in groups liking Undertale might be the good idea. Advertising to Youtubers who played Undertale and loved it is also a good idea.

That leads me to another point: Talk to the right people. Usually, Youtubers direct huge vectors of traffic, and if they play a game, chances that their viewers will check the game by themselves, even if it's not always true. You could also do the same with Twitch streamers.

To end this: Have a trailer and a teaser. Make people hype up for your game. You want people to sit impatiently in front of their computers, waiting for your game to release before it's actually finished.

I don't have a lot more practical tips to give because I haven't released any games at all so far, but this is what I've seen from the past, and this is what works with publicity.

I was thinking a "build you own tower" where each player outfits different tower templates with parts. The parts dictate what features a tower has and how it upgrades/how much it costs to upgrade.

You could throw in a building/disenchanting system to allow people to build parts they want, and/or give parts out randomly so people have all sorts of wacky builds.

Then when a game begins, you equip the towers you want to use like in plants vs zombies.
Different levels could disable different types of parts and limit you in different way with terrain, resistances, game modes and such.

I think a game like that would rely heavily on being able to start up randomly generated maps.
I wouldn't go as far as to let people design maps because an editor is almost a game in itself.
