There are lots of objects in the game which are copy paste jobs. Pretty common in all video games though.

But keep in mind that Victoria and Max are supposed to parallel each other a lot. They're a LOT more similar than we're initially lead to believe, Victoria is like Max's path-untraveled, as we're shown in the alternate timeline where a more confident Max basically takes her spot in the social hierarchy. Even in the original timeline, they both have the same interests, and the same insecurities ... they just express them differently. Max is quiet and kind to the world, but catty and opinionated internally (internal thoughts, her journal). Victoria is catty and openly opinionated externally ... but she's much more reserved and self reflective when we read the "get over yourself" note she leaves herself in the classroom in Ep5, the emails where she feels sorry for Kate, the "cutesy" things we find in her room that she doesn't advertise to the world (her teddy, nerd statuette, being a cookie monster, etc).

We get pissy at Victoria because she spends the games spreading lies and fucking with people's shit. But Max spends the entire game doing literally the exact same thing with her rewind powers. It's just that Max (supposedly) does it for good.

Max = Victoria. Or, rather, Victoria represents a different side of Max's personality. Or some shit like dat.

I've also seen people compare Max and Chloe's relationship to Victoria and Nathan's.
Both Chloe and Nathan have issues with their family, drugs, mental problems, etc.
And both are regarded by most in Arcadia Bay as just being no good. But when you get close to them and know them, in the way Max and Victoria know their respective friends, you see that they're not all bad. They may do some really shitty things (And in Nathan's case some outright unforgivable things) but they're still capable of compassion and being good friends.

I suppose it could be possible in the alternate timeline. Perhaps having Max and Victoria as friends kept Nathan from feeling like he needed someone like Jefferson. If he's more mentally stable and not committing crimes he may be friends with Chloe.
If they got really close then he could use his wealth to help Chloe and her family with the medical stuff, or take her places she otherwise would not get to go. But that's all riding on factors we have no clue about like how Nathan is in that timeline.

It's amazing how the flaws with Ep 5 are evident.
There was a definite tone shift and as already discussed there was almost nothing explained or new added to the story. It didn't end, it just stopped.
I wonder if people notice these issues if they're playing the game for the first time in one/ a few sessions.
Waiting months for the finale definitely made it seem like a let down, especially when they took more time to work on it and still make something lackluster. But then again, the delay between episodes is why this game resonated with me: having time to think about it, discuss it, read, etc.
The ride itself was just as memorable as the game, and I'm not sure I would have the same feelings if I had just waited for all the episodes to come out before playing them.

I think the game's best experience was for completely casual players who never got truly attached to it, even if they played each episode as it released. One or two people I know who did that loved episode 5. One sacrificed AB and said they were just happy with Max and Chloe driving off, slightly broken but together, and for her that was a happy ending. The other sacrificed Chloe and said how sad it was but it was 'destiny' and then asked if I thought Max and Warren would get married. Neither could name any of the minor characters if you asked them.

I marathoned it after a friend bought it for me on Steam, I enjoyed all of it but I definitely can understand that if you played each piece as it came out than ep5 would be a low note to end on. The Dark room took ages to beat but Ep5 only took me about 2 hours. I expected to. I expected him to be useless leechnerd. But he turned out to be there for people in a jam, and generally a pretty solid guy. He wasn't a badass (except in that one scene), but he tried his best, and he seemed to actually give a shit. If you like episodic choice based adventures, sure. It's pretty excellent for the first 4 episodes. The endings are pretty bad and the conclusion of the whole mystery is LOST tier, but overall it was still worth it just for ep 1-4. In the first playthrough there was that excitement from getting to play a brand new episode after 3 months. But by the time I reached the diner I had a sinking feeling when I heard Warren's dialogue. I reloaded the cliff scene to go through both endings and felt absolutely gutted.

I replayed it on my second save and finding out that Victoria had to get stuffed in the fridge in order to have meaningful interactions with her left a bad taste in my mouth. As it went on I realised that not only the endings but the episode as a whole was just horrible, easily the worst video game episode I've ever played (TWD Season 2's weaker episodes set the bar pretty low). The pacing is worse than Episode 3, the first third is completely pointless, we learn almost nothing new about the characters or story and the nightmare sequence was an inexcusable waste of time and resources.

The nightmare was actually one of my favorite parts of the game. I love when a character has to face their own insecurities and fears like that. Meeting yourself face to face. And then some of the visuals were really cool (Jefferson's classroom with the blood and changing carvings on the desk, the Dark Rook watching Chloe, the snowglobe in Chloe's house, and the walk of memories)
Aside from that in Episode 5 I liked the scene of being in the town during the storm to save people and when you use Warren's photo and come clean with Chloe about everything with William.
Too bad I thought everything was leading up to an awesome finale and instead got slapped in the face with a dilemma I was convinced Dontnod was smart enough to avoid.
A lot should have been changed in Ep 5, but it still had moments I liked. Still the worst episode out of the season though.

The visuals were neat but the nightmare said nothing of any real value about the characters or the story that we didn't already know. Max's conversation with herself read like one of GeekRemix's tumblr posts about how Max is such a nasty manipulative little so-and-so for such trivial shit like the scene with Dana's pregnancy test.

The scene in the parking lot is one of the only decent moments in the entire episode and even that's ruined by the fact that Max is still a complete idiot and forgets to mention the storm. Seriously. This game was built on passive storytelling, and in episode 5 there's almost none of it. Just a lot of really shitty exposition that doesn't actually exposit anything.
If budget was the problem, wouldn't it serve them to tell the bulk of the story in the background through simple text items? To reward the players who take the time to look at all that stuff by giving a bit more depth to the story?

The only passive storytelling I can think of is the stupid cat pic climax, and Juliet's article talking about how Kate's suicide attempt is what it took to get people to acknowledge Blackwell for a fundamental bullying problem - which is an issue that Blackwell completely escapes in either ending, either destroyed by the tornado or destroyed by Nathan's downfall (that it helped cause by constantly bowing to Sean's bullshit when they knew perfectly well that Nathan was so unhinged to recommend putting him in a dedicated psychiatric facility, just like they knew that Kate had experienced a trauma, their own words, but did fucking nothing).
And sure, the school closing down might be considered a 'comeuppance' but that doesn't solve or even address the fucking problem. Just like the game as a whole simply 'stops' rather than 'ends', Blackwell simply closes. Rachel's simply dead. Nathan simply dies. Warren simply wanders away. Jefferson's simply arrested in the past, getting caught not thanks to any investigative work but simply because he had the bad luck to kidnap and reveal himself to a girl with time powers. Everything just fucking gives up.

The leaks for Episode 5 were very similar to the final product (the most notable change was the cemetery). I think they probably did settle for the final choice by the time Episode 1 came out but I strongly suspect that there were different (and most likely better) ideas earlier in development that we could see remnants of in the final product (Nathan's dialogue about the storm and a lot of the stuff about Rachel).

Part of the reason Polarized felt different was because it lacked the elements that made the game interesting, like being rewarded for paying attention and taking time to look at/ read things you find.
It was a rushed, unsatisfying, and abrupt ending to the game that leaves far more questions in both choices than it gives answers. And using what you know about the characters does not lead to good conclusions if you think what happens afterwards.

Yeah, it feels very much like the previous episodes were quite well planned and refined, and they just ran out of time as the year progressed. They had episode 2 finished when 1 released and were a fair way into working on 3 already. By the time 4 released they hadn't even started work on 5. They probably didn't have any more money to extend development time past October, and ended up just making do with the plan they had, spent two weeks writing and decided that would be fine. Not to mention all the tards pestering them on twitter to release ASAP.

I hope the LE will shed some light on their true intentions. I know in Twitter they have been defending it, but I cannot believe that they really planned those endings from the start.
It seems like they thought that originally it would work, realized it was dumb, changed the endings to be better, and then ran into some issue that made them fallback to their first idea. Which everyone had already predicted and many had written off as being stupid.

I think the flaw is that they really were the endings planned from the start. The same way JK Rowling wrote the last chapter of Harry Potter in 1997 and put it in a fucking safe for ten years and then just tacked it on at the end regardless of how retarded it had become.
