hey guys, still working on my text adventure. it's an old-school infocom parser style one, but my main objective is to eliminate all the annoying "you can't do that" stuff that people hate about text adventures before i move on to the story/dialogue.

>progress:
* map layout finished, now i just have to write room descriptions.
* enemy NPC can move around, open unlocked doors/windows, unlock locked doors/windows from the inside, and break down/shatter locked doors/windows from the outside. they can notice sounds made by the player, and the player will be notified of loud sounds made by the NPC if they're in the same building. no pathfinding yet though, just hard scripted movement from one specific room to the next at the moment. not even sure if i want to implement true pathfinding at all since i'm aiming for a horror (or crime thriller if horror is too played out) theme and it's spoopier to just have one false move summon the enemy to the immediate area rather than have the enemy clumsily chase after the player.
* related to the above: the player is treated as sneaking/moving quietly by default, and some rooms have squeaky floors that can't be avoided, but every room has an object that can be hidden inside.
* some basic puzzles: a microwave that can be set to specific times, cook food, and explode when there's metal in it, a safe with a randomly-generated code, a randomly-generated magic word that must be written down on a piece of paper and attached to something, and some other, less-elaborate things. (i have actual ideas for how these will fit together, if anyone is interested.)
* whole game look updated slightly to incorporate color scheme.

>to do:
* bring all the elements of the stealth system together.
* give it an oscar-worthy story.
* maek gaem

also, i make music if anyone wants to hear that too

In SDL, how quickly should I poll my event loop? I'm rendering at 60fps, but I've seen some games poll at different rates compared to rendering

Like for fighting games and stuff, sometimes inputs are sampled faster

Do you have any general advice? Would the polling speed make a huge difference on CPU consumption and battery usage on mobile? I was thinking of polling for events at 8ms (twice as fast as I render)

There's no sweet spot. Just play around with it and figure out what works.

Just FYI, setting up your game loop so that running the input polling and logic at a higher frequency than rendering is actually meaningful is not trivial.

God damn it. If Game Maker just had static typing and the IDE kept track of your variable names the amount of bugs I experience would be almost zero.

It's annoying that the whole thing falls apart at runtime because I accidentally write "platfrom" instead of "platform". Any other IDE would pick that up.

>>126680651
They aren't both plurals.
"The Fighters" is a proper noun -- the name of ONE band.
"George and Smith" is a set of two names -- plural.

Take another example: There's a family with the last name of "Smith".

"The Smiths were a rock band" -- because "The Smiths" is multiple people.

"The Smith family was a rock band" -- because "The Smith family" is ONE family.

if you honestly think you can get to game industry tier art or /ic/ good/god tier in an year, you are simply delusional.

took me 6 intense months from 0 practice to good enough to pass into an art centered highschool, and another 4 to get even decent.
some move faster/are more determined/have a higher affinity/skill, some enter highschool with already god tier art, but I moved slow.

stay determined, get into artschool, find a big fandom, draw lewd for money, you'll get practice and money or at least part of the money for college, maybe your parents/grandparents/uncles can pitch in as well. stay determined anon

>lewd futa/furry/pony porn, ew that's below me

you have already failed. whatever you draw you need to draw instantly. just keep drawing, just keep devving, stay determined.

Quite a few old low poly games do use mixels in their textures. They will use a larger area for faces and a smaller area for other clothes/body. So it allows the face to have pretty good detail while still keeping a small texture size.

Since this is the Unity general does anyone know what's up when a Unity web player game does not load on itch.io? Is it my browser that's shit, something wrong with their servers, or something wrong with the .unity3d file? The file runs fine locally.

Its the browser in general. A while ago Google decided to stop supporting some specific technology or something, so when Botnet autoupdated, everyone stopped being able to load Unity web players, because the web players used that NPAPI or whatever technology

The alternative is make it a WebGL build or use a different browser

Unfortunately WebGL does not let you use the spacebar instead of the red button unless you fullscreen it. And maybe it's my old version of Unity but it seems pretty CPU-heavy compared to the plugin version.

I added sounds, changed the background color, tuned the difficulty a bit so it's actually possible to make it around the whole circle now and added a score bonus for doing so.

I'm not really sure what else to do with this before considering it finished, I originally wanted to have music but with the bleeping and blooping it's already pretty dense sound-wise especially when you get further into the game so the music might just end up being inaudible under it all, and I'm not sure how many people play phone games with the sound on anyway (I usually don't).

I guess I could do a high score upload thing but writing the server for that would probably be a bigger project than the game itself... and since no one's going to play it anyway it wouldn't serve much of a purpose.

i caught my finger moving on its own without me consciously thinking about it, really weird. i bet chimpanzees are really good at it.

here's what i would try:
scrap the scoring system, it's meaningless. every 3 consecutive hits, you get one point. no other rules.
everything looks boring as fuck. put some work into it. the button you press should be fat and give visual feedback when pressed.
pic related is how you do your high score, no online scores required. all you want is for joe shmoe to be able to tell tim that he made it to 5 on the shitter.
serve an add every gameover.

that's like an hour of work if you're slow.

then you publish on everything you can, post about it everywhere you can and hope that your 1/1000 shot works out.

Ah, you're right about local high scores, that's good. And yeah, the scoring system is essentially just "big numbers are good" right now, it's based on how many milliseconds pass between your color coming up and you pressing the button, but it doesn't really feel meaningful.

But one point per 3 hits? I feel like that's too slow, I mean I'd be scoring like 3 points total most of the time then... I think I'll go with one point per hit at least.

what's important in my opinion is that you keep the scoring as simple as possible. it's the kind of game where a lot the fun comes from comparing your score with your friends score. the reason i didn't go for 1 point per click is because i prefer points to be more valuable. if you look at flappy bird for example, you only get a point if you clear a set of pipes. there's something valuable to the feeling of having been halfway to something, which is something your players won't be able to experience if it's just one click per point.

He made some poor guy have to change schools because on top of all the bullying he'd dish out on him, he fucked his mom and she got in trouble with her husband and ended up getting divorced because of it a few months later. So every time in school he'd boast about it and make fun of that guy because he made their parents get a divorce. I also found out a few months ago he got accused of raping someone but I don't know what came out of that.
>>
>>126696985
>there's something valuable to the feeling of having been halfway to something,

Ah, I didn't think about that perspective. But I still think there's a problem if the player instead feels like they can't get more than a couple of points, because the game gets faster than most people's reaction times around like the 10th hit or so. It does level out a bit after that so if you do get over that hump I guess one point every three isn't bad, but I don't think the average person is gonna reach that level even if they do play the game a lot.

I was contemplating one point per hit with a bonus for every third, but I'm not sure that would give that sense of being halfway to something either.
>>
>>126697308
The sanest thing to do is just make it hard enough that you can't casually cheat (editing a text file that's just sitting there in the folder) so that normal players won't spoil it for themselves. Then add cheat codes or some shit for the people that go looking for them.

There's a class of people that cheat at every game, and just want to dick around exploding everything with no interesting in whatever balance or challenge anyone had in mind.
>>
>>126697308
They are right. This is something I'm trying to get that dungeon crawler dev to understand.

>>
>>126697921
I like talking about game design.

Should you have dynamic or non-dynamic difficulty?
>>
>>126697921
well I'm removing menus from my game because they wreck the pacing and immersion of the game. stuff like inventory being in a window that pops up and pauses the game. or when you start the game you aren't taken directly to the game - you have to wade through some menus to get set up.

something like binding of isaac is more desirable. the shop doesn't even have a menu.
>>
>>126698226
If you're not gonna have difficulty options some level of dynamic difficulty can be good. The best kind is when the player doesn't even notice but the game is adapting to them and giving everyone something that is challenging.

Alright, game design talk:
What are some methods to handle enemy level/difficulty scaling in a non-linear game that procedurally generates without resorting to scaling it to the level of the player character - so that some generated regions are inherently dangerous for new players and others aren't?

Ideas:
-Generate level "regions" that get higher as you move further away from the beginning area of the game and have them occasionally spike or dip in certain spots.
-Generate optional sub-regions (Dungeons etc.) that the player can easily avoid that have higher levels than the surrounding area, and have good rewards in them, giving the player incentive to come back once they've leveled up.
-Possibly include light scaling based on player level so that low-level areas aren't completely boring for the player to be in
>>
>>126699135
All level scaling is shit, dude. dark souls is a best.
Flee from enemies too strong, come back later when you're stronger for revenge. There's nothing better.

Force the player to adapt to the challenge of the world, so the world is actually a dangerous place.
>>
>>126699376
You can still do scaling without trivializing the game, for example in Resident Evil 4 there are subtle differences in enemy health (and I think you get better items like more green herbs) based on how much damage the player takes, but no one would ever notice unless you told them. Dark Souls could do the same thing without it really mattering.

That's what I'm trying to accomplish, but given nothing in the game is going to be hand-placed I can't specifically make it like Dark Souls. The game needs a method to work out where it's going to put harder/easier enemies.

Twin stick shooters. Does an optional lock-on system render the whole second stick pointless? Would everyone just lock-on and I would be forced to design around the lock-on system being integral and thus no longer optional at all?

Depends if you want to bake a normal map or just twiddle around in Photoshop. For human characters or extremely high detail, complicated models, you would want to do a high poly (non game) version. For a gun, not so much.

You should sort of know this already (seeing as you animate 1p view models), perspective is key. Your barrel has 8 gorillion sides, when it only needs just 8. Look at the RPG in the animation, that only has 12 sides and you can barely notice the edges out toward the tip. Also get rid of polygons the player won't ever see, like the one I marked. Your barrel probably has way more tris than either the stock or the grip, and those are the two things closest to the Player's face.

The most detail should go on the upper receiver, trigger area and sight

Add a god damn sight

The problem is that I'm the guy that's going to do that, so those concepts are solely for the purpose of not forgetting about characters idea.

I literally have no way out of this because I can't engage someone to do it. What's even more depressing is that I have a shit ton of animation to do so my game looks how I imagined it in the first place.

I'm a bit scared to continue this project to be honest.

I'm trying to make a spacefaring Roguelike and need some input on what order I should develop it's features in.

I can either develop it in the order the player will experience the game's elements, where they start on a planet, earn the money to buy a ship and then take it to space, so the order of development looks like this:
Out-of-ship combat/exploration -> Planet generation -> Ship combat/exploration -> Universe generation -> Everything else
Or I can develop it so that the most unique elements come first, so that if I burn out there's a better chance of those being in a decent state, making the order like this:
Ship combat/exploration -> Universe Generation -> Out-of-ship combat/exploration -> Planet generation -> Everything else

Hmm, Morrowind seems a suitable victim for this.
Creating a 2D gameworld of various amount of crap scattered about, is unquestionably pretty easy. Comparable to Heroes of Might and Magic 3 map editing(specifically how easily such a map could be implemented in code).

Now only remains gameplay mechanics - which there is not much of anyways; wikipedia style dialogue, AI agents that mostly stand in one spot and sometimes walk a little in random direction. A simple combat AI to make hostile agents run up to player and perform attack actions.
>>
>>126701939
Project is a RPG with a Final Fantasy battle system. The particularity of that system is that every move (normal attack - special attack - blocking ) is like a rythm game ( Keys are showing up, press them at the right time like a Guitar Hero game ). Every move has a specific characteristic. For example, a normal attack with a sword is forgiving about mistakes ( other succesful keys will make damage ) but failing a " note " on special attacks will make the attack fail.

I don't really have any reference material to link to visually, because I have little idea of how my character is going to look, aside from that little concept I posted. However, I have a robot voice I made that could maybe represent him for now : https://clyp.it/krgzjah1

I want to put unmatchable blocks into the game but I'm trying to figure out an intuitive way for the player to actually remove those blocks from the board somehow. Does anyone have any ideas? Took me maybe two years broadly? Unity's pretty partitioned, so you can figure out one thing like physics without having really touched the UI or editor scripting. I think the biggest thing is being broadly familiar with most of the API and getting a sense for things that there "should" be functions for (so you can look those up instead of building your own solutions.) Aggressively breaking up behaviors into separate components and picking up editor scripting are the other two big things, I think.

Protip re outdated information, you can always filter google searches to only return results from the past year for more recent stuff. If you're getting a lot of questions where the answer isn't easily searchable you might be getting to the point where you just need to start figuring things out yourself, though.

There's a sort of awkward spot where most of the people who need help with Unity are just starting out and fill the internet with problems relevant to that, and the people who know what they're doing don't use the same channels, but people in-between are stuck.
>>
>>126704089
It's the same as any programming library, you have to work with it for a while and then you start learning the functions you actually use. The only difference is in this case the area you need to cover is much larger than an average library. Just look stuff up in the reference and sooner or later you will remember them. Having auto complete in your editor which shows the names of parameters and shit (as in Visual Studio) is very helpful too.

If you mean looking up things like how to implement a feature/algorithm specifically in Unity (like "How do I make my character able to double jump in Unity") and then just copy pasting the result then no, I would rather look up a general description and implement it on my own at first, then only adding a library if my version has problems. As soon as you use other people's code which you don't understand you are just begging for trouble, there is no reason to do it unless it is a seriously difficult task.
>>
>>126704601
>>126704751

Ive been trying to focus more on learning so I know it and less "Put this code in, trust me it works" but alot of it, especially the asset store is filled with "let me do it for you, you will never learn to do it on your own". Its like its trying to make you dependent.
>>
>>126704493
>>126704751
Oh, I forgot to add: something that probably helped me learn a bunch (and still does) is getting into the habit of prototyping mechanics in their own projects. Working on lots of small 2-5 day things let you experiment more with program structure than with something big, so you can tell a lot faster what works and what doesn't.
>>
>>126704996

Have you simply thought about having some sort of "help" command for each object that tells you in which ways you can interact with it?

Like, "help box" would get you something like:
>push box
>open box
>kick box
>sit on box
>stand on box

And have most of the options at least give you some sort of funny text rather than just saying "it does nothing".

UE4 has a shitton of these conflicts for some reason. It's either that or your hardware isn't good enough. One of the devs even said sth like "don't develop with our product unless you have a quad core". But most of the time it's software conflicts.

Yes, That particular thread waits until it's finished. So if you're running it on the UI thread, then it'll freeze your game. Otherwise it'll cause that thread to hang up and wait until it makes a connection.

>>
>>126708881

Reason being that if the API has a non-blocking function, it's already using a secondary thread, and it would be a waste to create another one on top of that to undo the "artificial" blocking in the blocking function.
>>
>>126708928
In general, you always want your networking done on a separate thread from your UI/main thread.

Normally you're right, it's good to avoid threads but this is a situation where threads are needed.

Guess I'll try adding enemies next and maybe go for a local coop. Basically I'm aiming for a couch game experience.

Just getting buffs and debuffs functioning. I got no idea how I should make these work. Here's my current (flawed) model. Looking for criticism and suggestions.

> Buffs/Debuffs are objects

> Each instance of a buff or debuff has two important variables, target and ID

> ID is just a numerical identifier of what debuff it actually is, target is the unit affected by it

> Other values are stored such as who afflicted the debuff (which is relevant if a unit can reflect damage or something), duration (in case the debuff times out)

> At the end of every event that could cause a debuff such as whenever a unit moves, whenever a unit attacks, whenever a unit casts a spell, whenever a unit dies, etc. it runs a function called checkbuffs_unithasmoved() (not the actual name, I just typed it for clarity)

> This function checks all current instances of the buff object to see if they should trigger their effect

> If it's effect should trigger, then do it.

A vast majority of my buffs and debuffs will follow a "whenever X, do Y" formula. So my above method would be able to apply to all situations I could possibly think of.

So something written as "Poisoned, taking 3 damage per turn", would be programmed as "Whenever the [UNIT]'s turn ends, deal 3 damage to [UNIT]."

A buff like "-3 Melee damage for the next three turns." would be programmed as "Whenever the game deals damage of type [MELEE] and from [UNIT], return the value minus 3" and "Whenever [UNIT]'s turn ends, decrease duration by 1; then if duration is 0, remove this buff".

The process is a little rough, I wouldn't mind hearing how you devs have dealt with buffs/debuffs that constantly affect units.

Pic extremely old but still related since I haven't updated the game's graphics since I last took a screenshot.

This gets kind of not very enjoyable at points like this when I had to design a completely new system of ores and minerals in order to allow certain style of crafting, and then having to decide that any kind of crafting as a main mechanic for acquisition of things is unable to create the kind of feel I want this game to have.

Now I have to do something to these ores and minerals to make them work well with gameplay based on trading, because after this experience I know that trading gives the right kind of feel. Maybe I'll revert them to what they were at some point previously, or something.

For christ's sake man use your imagination, you can't sit there and tell me you haven't thought of neato concepts or gameplay mechanics before.

It doesn't have to be something 100% original, just as long you either do something unique with the presentation or do something fun with the gameplay.

What supersucks is that resharper keeps editing my code to be much more compact and readable, but half of those changes won't compile in the stupid unity mono

Is making a game that only exists as a vehicle to tell a half baked story about being depressed through convoluted and sometimes nonsenical allusions that make little sense to anyone but me an idea worth persuing?
No.

But talk me into doing it anyway because it might get me doing something!

1- Why is it brown? It's not exactly the best color to convey the idea of "candle" to an audience. A shade of yellow would probably work much better.

2- The way it is lighted doesn't make much sense. The top part of the cylinder should overall be lighter than the body, since it receives the light directly.

3- You should probably have a bit of "string" (no idea what it is called in English) before the flame, so people can tell where it comes from. Would reinforce the idea of a candle, too.

4- Flame isn't that amazing. Maybe make it more yellow, with a bit of blue at its base?

Hell, just Google pictures of candles.

>>
>>126716410
>It lasts about an hour and a half and has no traditional mechanics, no goals or objectives
Still not what I had in mind.

I was thinking more a mediocre bash together of a simple game type (such as a 2d platformer) which isn't particularly good for the genre but earns special snowflake points because of the story. which is also almost certainly mediocre.

So you get the story points of a walking simulator, the code quality of Windows 2000 The magnitude of this hack compares favorably with that of the national debt. and the actual gameplay less than or equal to a dime-a-dozen indie title!

From my understanding the interface is better but Game Maker was geared for making 2D games, Unity was 3D engine first with 2D stuff being a secondary sorta thing.
