question: is there a way to dig walls and still have a floor on the upper zlevel, kinda like how when you dig horizontally into a tile it doesnt necesarily destroys the floor on the upper tile?

like, can i construct a wall (which generates a floor on the zlevel above it) and then deconstruct the wall in a way that leaves a floor over it?
>>

you'd be better off just building floors on the z-level you want them, I think

I miss the times when this game was so new and exciting, I would just hop in and start making a fort without caring about details.

Now I've become super autistic.

>want to play DF
>well, time to create a world

>open PerfectWorld
>spend several hours creating a nice template
>export it and start generating worlds
>discard those who have shit civilization placement or lack interesting features I can't predetermine, like evil glaciers
>if a world seems nice, i import its legends into legend viewer
>read history of its wars and leaders, check out site and global populations, find myself a dwarven civilization i'd wish to represent, if there isn't one with a male king and a non-retarded sounding name, world goes into trash
>if everything is good, i finally start looking for an embark spot
>if a good spot is found, i blindly embark into it without preparations and start doing exploratory mining
>a lot of sedimentary stone means its good to go
>alt+f4 and choose the same embark spot, this time do advanced preparations
>retry the embark screen until at least 4 dwarves are male
>give the oldest one some qualities for an expedition leader and make him a miner
>make other 3 male dwarves a miner, a mason and a carpenter
>make 3 female dwarves a cook, a brewer and a planter
>choose names for group and fortress, complete the embark preparations, embark, save

>now I can finally play the game
>>
What's the best way to play this game if military/sieges/fortifications/caverns are my main attraction

When it comes to optimizing production or making perfect bedrooms I start to check out.

DF might not be the game for you. but you could try embarking in an evil biome or near a tower, making sure you're close to a goblin dark fort as well, and just making survival a goal. maybe either leave the caverns open or connect them to the surface, come what may

Your need to enforce strict gender roles on your dwarves for it to "feel right" shows a special kind of autism, especially considering how fantasy dwarves have next to no sex dimorphism.

Still, you should know that entity positions can be restricted to certain castes in the raws. Restricting the "monarch" position to males will mean that you only get kings.

Released Dwarf Fortress 0.42.04

Various fixes and various giant and peopled animals. I held off on common domestic animal people for now, but there are plenty of canine and feline critters that got the treatment.

New stuff

Giant and person versions of many of the older creatures, including the elephant
Vampire purges in world generation to control their overfeeding which was stopping cities from growing

Major bug fixes

Allowed dwarves praying at temple dedicated to no particular god to choose prayer target according to need
Stopped adv mode goblin animals from fighting gobs and each other
Fixed error causing underground sewer dwellers to copy town stockpile, lag-killing certain towns
Stopped crash with goblet trading
Made retire store away merchants and diplomats and not mark visitors and residents as hostile
Made non-military visitors do citizenship petitions properly
Fixed broken merchant-elevated-to-liaison that sits at trade depot for entire life

Other bug fixes/tweaks

Fixed error with building profiles causing underground bandit leaders to roam streets
Vampire guests of various kinds give themselves cover identities (those on-site will still be revealed in old saves)
Stopped some position elevation announcements from giving away vampires
Removed trade goods from retired sites if living merchant is still present
Made animals less afraid of casual relationships
Various animal tweaks that came up during the peopling (see file changes.txt)
Marked visitors correctly in site text export
Fixed a cause of string entry key conflicts
Made it list proper subregion when talking about certain adventurer rumor sites instead of subregion where speaker is standing

I mean I only know about libraries, taverns, and temples. I haven't messed around with libraries and temples but I understand that dudes will just steal from your library, and taverns only seem to give a few migrants and make it hard to understand how many of your dwarves are idling because it reports "Socializing" as a job.

I can do without those things but I would be nervous going back if it meant making the m screen more complicated.
>>
>>126565191
Sieges is the main thing. In 40.24 sieges would show up rarely or not at all, and when they did show up it would be like 5 goblins.

There are things dfhack allows those of us willing to cheat at a single player game to do and test which make things more interesting/fun/efficient/pretty/scary/comfy for everyone.

Case in point: using dfhack it was possible to confirm exactly what the difference between masterwork and artifact was (roughly 150% more accuracy) and using the ability to test accuracy some preliminary work has already shown that there is a value which covers need satisfaction, and that there is a cap per need.

Similarly the boost to accuracy (and presumably other less easily tested aspects) stacks from multiple fulfilled needs, while the malus from unmet neds doesn't seem to stack as rapdly.
>>126527095
You could try to edit yourself, but if you want nice looking engravings you will need some tilemagic and you gotta accept that the far side of the wall bumps up against the unrevealed part of the screen.

I need to poke at the new myne/CLA tileset because I do like the engraving trick he used in it.

If you want to see how they work I can dig up the .xcf with the layers but look at the + and wall tiles in the CLA tileset and this one, see the partially transparent tiles? They change when they are inverted for engraving.

No that is cheating because I wouldn't delete the aquifer out of existence.

I mean if I use a mod to micromanage my fortress to an extent that seems overpowered, it's still not cheating because I could pause the game every 10 seconds and do everything myself which is what I've been doing

Well, "like others in his culture" part of his values look quite ordinary. I thought that since in the new version civ values are somewhat randomized, you could've had a dwarven civ that doesn't deem murder a crime. Yeah, perhaps its just a vendetta thing, I've had this happen. During one of a small riots, a fortress guard killed my hammerrer's wife, so hammerrer broke a few of his bones, putting him to hospital, then came to his hospital bed and turned him into a bloody mess.

One factor which is known to affect migrant wave size is the total size of your fortress's units list (all 4 categories), which consists of dwarves, invaders, merchants, and animals which either died or currently live at your fortress. As this number increases, the maximum size of migrant waves will be reduced: starting at a local population of 1000, migrant wave sizes are limited to 10, and at subsequent levels of 1300, 1600, 1800, 2000, 2200, 2400, 2600, 2800, and 2900, the limit is decreased by 1, and once you reach a local population of 3000 you will cease to get migrants at all.

Yea you're screwed.

But.. cannon fodder is great. Throw those fuckers to the wolves while your legendary dick punchers hit them from the sides while they're fighting your mercs. 9 losses out of 10 it's because my military was fighting 10:1 odds and once their attackers got behind them it was all unblocked and unparried and they got dunked. Shitty shock troops = less meaningful casualties. Plus free armor to melt when they die I guess.

If you can get 60 fucking weaponlords hanging out robbing people in a hamlet, why can't you get weaponlord mercs as well?

Make sure dwarves arent set to auto gather webs in the orders menu (hotkey: o) so they dont go rushing in to the caverns only to get their head pushed in by a giant toad. Tunnel a corridor and cover it with traps, and probably a drawbridge at the entrance, linked to a lever to stop anything particularly nasty getting in.

No need to block the edges off, do you want to have fun or not? There are lots of creatures that can wander in which are worth hunting for their meat or capturing in a cage trap.

By all means send the military to scout, the first cavern layer has plenty of relatively easy targets for them to train on.

By year 6? ~10-15 mil is respectable, but you can easily get higher if you have a rich site or you've been breeding cavern creatures. If you start mining adamantine around year 3, you can get 10 mil in artifacts from that alone by the 6th year. It really depends on your playstyle how feasible mass wealth generation is, but if your wealth is lower than 8 digits by year 6 you should step it up.
>>
>>126592652
how the fuck do you get 15 mil by year six? i've been playing for years and my forts basically softcap at 5mil after I have everything I need and legendary rooms for most of my dwarves

Basically just what I wrote before. Dig adamantine and never stop producing wealth. Pic related is a fort from .40.24 at 9 years. It was over 50 mil when I stopped playing it at 14 years.

Their products are worth a lot. Prepared meals made with cavern creatures' meat and eggs are worth a shit ton. Their bones are great for decorations as well. Notice the "other objects" section in my wealth in this pic, a whole lot of that is prepared meals.

>>

Yes.
Setting your attack style to close combat and auto-attacking unconscious enemies with it are a very easy way to boost up wrestler and fighter to legendary.
Too bad that the moment they wake up, even if they pass out again, you stop auto-attacking for some reason.

Babies are born with the training level of the mother. Then you can train the babies to tame, and subsequent generations born from your tame ones will inherit tameness from the mother. VCCs and GCSs don't have a child state, though, they're born as adults, so they can't ever be fully tamed. Not wirhout modding, at least. I didn't really mind, though. I got 7 legendary animal trainers in this fort.

Is it really? I guess I just assumed everyone playing long forts kept digging forever and overproducing for its own sake. I was basing my advice on that assumption. Does anyone else in this thread play that way?
Incidentally, I've done better. I had a 40+ year fort in 34.11 break 300mil, and that was after scuttling most of my industry in the final few years. I can't keep a fort at a playable fps long enough to beat it now.

It ranged from 8-12 when I stopped playing it. It would drop to ~3 during sieges. Most of the animals were caged though, the low fps came more from digging many impractically large rooms over many z levels and keeping the caverns open whenever there wasn't a dangerous fb lurking.

The currency was useless because my civ was at war with the people I was cutting down and I'm not exactly going to walk up to their shops with a bag full of plunder and expect much.

Anyway I trained my throwing up to max, dodged a goblin crossbowman firing his bolts at me, picked up the bolt and threw it through his fucking left lower leg then ran up and cut off his head before he could stand back up.

Yes. Unlike bards and scholas, they won't start out as neutral, but will jump into to the fray immediatly. Hello /dfg/

I am pretty new to DF still and on this particular embark I was attacked by a Web spitting Titan that destroyed my meager Military force and he burchered some innocents and eventually just...chilled in this empty space. I walled it up and for a very long time he was just in this room and I found it hiliarious. I'm still working on smoothing and this area as well.

Anyway the real question was: I'd like to make a silk farm out of him but I don't know how and the wiki doesn't really provide that much help apart from saying it's more difficult. Reddit is just confusing as fuck so I need your help dfg.

>>
>>126622893
I'm not familiar with that graphics pack so I can't tell where the titan is, but could he be occupied with deconstructing a building? sometimes that takes a long time, maybe he's been deconstructing a few from the same position

I'm not entirely sure of the best way to make a silk farm, but I think the best way to start would be to wall him off in a small room. Eventually you'd want to carve fortifications somewhere into that wall (they can shoot webs through fortifications, I think), and probably have a raising bridge on the outside of that fortification, linked to a lever so that you can shut your farm off
>>
>>126622893
Lure him into a small room with fortifications separating him from a chained up kitten. Put raising bridges in front of the fortifications on the kitten's side so you can break LoS to allow your dwarves to go in and collect the silk.
I haven't done a fb silk farm since 34.11, and that set up worked for me twice then. Toady has changed the way hostility and attack choice works since then, so it might not work now. Give it a try and report back.

>>

As playable as DF usually is, yes. There are bugs but nothing really gamebreaking. the biggest bugs that existed on release of 42.01 were
>worshipping does not fulfill "worship" need
>dwarves can only worship 1 of their deities at a common temple
>military dwarves will not equip armour
>a few things that caused crashes
and all of those have been fixed (I've seen some people here still complaining that equipment isn't working properly, but other than dwarves carrying goblets and instruments around everywhere I've seen no such issues since 42.02)

As for your question, if you add the tags for evil as well as evil pets, you should be able to embark with any tameable animal available in your civ's area. You might need another tag to be able to embark with exotic pets, though.

seal off the caverns
start training 2 squads of marksdwarves
once they're high-skill and well equipped, set them up all together around a corner from the passage where the FB(s) is/are, so that they all gain line of sight with the beast at once, maybe 10-12 squares away. with luck, the mass of bolts hitting the thing will kill it or disable it before it can fuck your shit up with webs/fire, but your results may vary

If you make a large enough room and fill it with engravings from a decent engraver then that's an easy way to do it.

I'd avoid just doing that though, it can mess with your fort layout and huge empty sections just to abuse value mechanics look shitty.

Just make decent sized rooms and fill them with high value material objects, like statues, containers, cabinets, armour stands, weapon racks etc.

If you start adventure mode, see if your world allows playing as a Goblin, they're a great introduction race for adv mode due to access to Iron, and not needing to eat/drink like everyone else does, and have access to most weapons.
And don't try swimming during nights.
Becoming a vampire (by drinking blood of one) is also useful, because you won't get drowsy anymore, then it's just a case of knocking people unconcious and feasting on their blood.

There's a shitload of stuff you need to know and I really don't know what a beginner absolutely needs to know from the get-go. Here's a checklist of goals you should accomplish as a beginner:

[ ] Zoom in on an idle dwarfs by using the unit list (press u)
[ ] Toggle labors when examining a dwarf
[ ] Use the designations (press d) and learn how to chop trees and mine out spaces
[ ] Build a workshop (press b to open the building menu and then w for workshops)
[ ] Produce a bed at a carpenter's workshop (press q and highlight a workshop that you've constructed)
[ ] Create a stockpile (press p)

This should give you a feel for some of the menus. Here's a big challenge: mine a space for a farm underground, build a farm, tell it to produce plump helmets, build a still next to the farm, tell the still to turn your plump helmets into alcohol, and lay a stockpile of food next to your farm. This will give you a chance of survival.

My standard way of dealing with tantrumers is just locking them into their rooms for a month or two, and then preparing a nice coffin for them. Will this strategy work well in romantic relationships, as well?

Things are getting better. The unspeakable horrors are walled in and the aquifer is multiple layers - BUT the top and only the top layer is not-stone. This is very good news. Smoothing walls does not produce suspended jobs and it takes many less real time minutes to complete, regardless of how many layers of aquifer we have to go through.

>A zombie nerf has arrived. The animated critters no longer block, dodge, parry, wrestle or sprint, and they do charging attacks whenever possible. Zombies no longer receive positive defense adjustments for body part types, and they don't seek or prevent combat opportunities. Their strength bonus has been reduced. Severing all non-smashed heads on a zombie kills it (smashing already worked), and severing or smashing any working grasp on a headless zombie kills it. Zombies can still be reanimated if they have a working grasp. So it's a bit confusing there with the overall grasp situation on headless zombies (it's better to target their arms than their bodies if you can't smash them entirely), and they still have some undue benefits they share with wild animals (you should be able to strike or stop many unarmed attacks with weapons), but it is much better than it was. I still sometimes get those invincible unsmashable zombie heads. I'll try to figure that out.

>In an arena test, my competent sword+shield human was able to defeat ten zombies at once, receiving only minor injuries. It took some judicious selections, and some dodging to other squares, but it isn't hard if you stay away from multiple opponents. I also set six sword humans against twenty zombies, and they won without any losing anybody. On the other hand, I set ten unarmed unskilled humans against ten zombies, and the zombies won without losses. That sounds about right to me -- the zombies have many advantages in unarmed combat. So you'll have to keep your squishy civilians safe. Incidentally, one unarmed unskilled elephant person was able to kill ten human zombies without any trouble, since they have smashing power. Then an elephant person zombie was able to kill the elephant person...

The cautiousness personality check got flipped around with the new facets, which wouldn't normally be a problem (just a strike frequency shift), but the new drunken dwarves were 100 percent not-cautious (which made them all 100 percent cautious in the flipped check). The roll failed every time for them, so drunken sparring partners just sat there without throwing shots. That's normally reserved for super rare pathologically deliberate dwarves absolutely on one end of the curve, and that's not even much of an issue if their partner isn't the same way.

I'm not totally sure about the zombie change though. I mean I guess they'll be killable now and you don't have to be totally dependent on careful trap planning. But that was part of their mystique. You don't embark next to towers without being prepared for hard times.

He just mentions fixing the commitment issue here, not the gay-ness. Which is reasonable enough, I guess.

That's probably what they were supposed to be all along. Intelligent undead with supernatural strength and durability that can still wrestle and dodge and whatnot should probably be their own caste.

I'm thinking a spontaneous kind of zombie, that lived or died in a nasty enough way that it just can't stay down. The "fueled by vengeance" type of night creatures.
>>
>>126687961
He won't. Even though zombies were grade A bullshit of the highest degree, that's what Dorf is basically about. Difficult situations in a complex game.
>>
>>126688054
I mean I agree that he probably wont, but I think it would still be neat for undead formed from sentients to have a chance to be a more dangerous variant. Necro sieges already have undead with weapons right?
>>
So they die if you sever or crush a 'grasper.'

Is that the head or both arms? Can they be re-animated if they 'die' after one arm is severed but they still have one more?
>>
>>126688315
Yes, they'll show up with whatever weapon they died with. Well, whatever weapon they had weapon skill with I don't think it keeps track of whether or not they had a mule bone obsidian sword.

Anyway yeah, it'd be nice if there was variation. Lesser and Greater and Night Creature and Demon and so on.

Zombies in general are "Is it a thrall or a zombie". It's very flat, there isn't much complexity to them. Their nature (cut off a part, it too reanimates) makes them complex. Making them too easy to kill would really bring that simplicity to the surface and make zombies just a thing, rather than ITS TIME TO RAISE THE FUCKING GATES URIST. ITS TIME RIGHT NOW.
>>
>>126688317
>Can they be re-animated if they 'die' after one arm is severed but they still have one more?

>>
>>126688054
>He won't.
He will, eventually, if he lives that long.
The game has giant and half-human variations of almost every animal. No way is Toady going to be satisfied with only one kind of zombie.
>>
>>126688621
I think the goal for zombies is that they require weapons to really kill, but rely on numbers to still give armed dwarves problems. It would be neat for evil biomes to have wandering zombie hordes, maybe led by an intelligent undead. I imagine that kinda stuff would be around the combat/siege update where Toady fully simulates army movements and conflicts in general.
>>
>>126689002
i mean there's already mummies and vampires and necromancers (liches?)
>>
>>126688317
Yes.
If a zombie has no head, destroying any of its remaining hands (or any bodypart with the [GRASP] tag) will kill it, but it can still be reanimated if the conditions are right.
For a corpse to be safe, you need to cut off the head and both (all) hands.

And the way I read it, if the zombie still has a head, cutting the hands off won't work. You need to destroy the head(s) first.
>>
>hare bone warhammer
GREAT
>>
>>126689178
I know that, just garden variety is standard zombie or thrall. I'm talking about Vampires making Ghouls, greater undead that retain combat skills on reanimation, several corpses reanimated into an abomination.

Homosexuality chance is controlled by orientation tokens. Since there aren't new orientation tokens attached to animals to give them a chance to be gay, it's likely that removing their chance to be gay is exactly what he did. That's a much more reasonable supposition than proposing that he added a new hidden and hardcoded chance to be gay that applies to every creature that doesn't have explicitly defined orientations in their raws.

Maybe. I do like aquifiers don't get me wrong. Unlimited clean water without any worry about fps.

But I also like knowing where they are. And having a fort that starts at Z+10 and hits stone immediately says to me I'm going to find an aquifer but not where it'll be convenient.

But there is NOTHING to complain about in this embark.

I've genned two worlds so far and I'm quite confused as to what's happening. I can actually see the cities and sites on the oveworld for goblins, elves and humans, but when I embark, even if I'm pretty nearby one of them, it doesn't show them in my [c]iv. Do I need to meet them first? I know their cities exist, so what gives?
>>
>>126695364
if you wanna go the true super min max you start without picks or axes either. 3 magma safe stones to build a wood furnace, a smelter and a forge, you unbuild the wagon to get 3 woods, one of which you use to create a carpenter shop and then another for a wooden training axe, the other that you transform into coal which you then use to smelt the shittons of bituminous coals and bronze you were able to bring, which you then use to make picks and whatever

i don't always do all this honestly, it's all pretty useless for most embarks.
>>126695638
you need to meet them first
>>
>>126695364
If I'm not mistaken, meats from the same animal will share a barrel, so you're really not making the most of the exploit. And it's a real waste to take a copper crossbow and bolts; you can make a wooden or bone crossbow for basically nothing after you embark, and if you really want copper bolts you can spend 6 points for a malachite and turn it into 100 copper bolts instead of spending 42 points for 21 bolts. Similar with the quivers; you make 2 of them out of your pack animals' leather instead of spending 20 points. Turkeys and geese are better in literally every way than chickens, and more pigs or some sheep would be better than cows (and cheaper).
>>
>>126695638

To be fair, embark points are much more relevant to new players than old. I only look at the embark screen honestly if I'm playing in an evil biome where things can get tricky and you can't afford to dick around. Or an island where traders can't reach, or a glacier where I won't get wood for a few seasons.

My advanced worldgen fav parameters include halving the amount of embark points just to keep it interesting for myself. That's how abundant they really are. While it's SUPER NICE to have proficient dwarves to start with, you don't need it and the same goes with tons of food and drink. In the vast majority of biomes you will find more than enough plant and wood matter to keep you in comfort early game.

A lot has changed since 0.34 when trees = a single log of wood, surface plants were very, very limited and the game was much more hostile towards the player. I feel like writing a question to toady about this because it's really disappointing in a lot of ways for us that grew up in a harder world.

My chief medical dwarf decided to beat a crundle to death with a mug
Now he's trapped with a forgotten beast that hasn't noticed him yet

Do I let him die or try to bail the retard out? Normally I'd bail him out but this thing has made ragdolls out of every cave creature its come across and it breathes goddamn fire.

I actually look forward to digging invaders and ones that remember trap layouts for future raids, means actual militaries might always be necessary

This is just ridiculous. I've been playing on mineral scarcity 2000 and after looking at the worldgen files, switched to 1250 which is about half way between frequent and sparse.

Just.. goddamn. Normally my forts see 4 types of metal ores max. This is just shallow.

There's a chart on the wiki around 400ish is where you get more without being insane.

Yeah that's what's blowing me away, I consulted it, and the different amounts for quick worldgen. I'm getting what I feel is cheaty levels of ore from 1250 and the 4th most common setting for quick is half that plus 150

Trying out some new workshop configurations. Usually I keep all my farm related workshops in the dirt layer with the farms but having trouble figuring out the pros and cons of moving it all downstairs, closer to the rest of my industry and my dining room.

I've given it some though before. Early game having your food stockpiles and all that jazz close to your farms is very useful. Not a lot of hands.

Late game, having your processing and stockpiles closer to your workshops than your farms is more useful. Your farmers will be legendary and have a LOOOOT of downtime. They can spend a lot of time hauling shit.

So instead of killing a forgotten beast my army decides to have a brawl in the tavern; killing most of my veterans while various human entertainers watched

Great!
