Man, every final fantasy just keeps on reducing the party count. The old ones had five members, then four, then for a long time it was at three members. Then later ones have two members like in 13-2 (I know you have a pet, but you can't control it) and finally, in 13-LR on forward, you only control one character.

I think it just needs to find its stride. The most recent episodes have been good, but the beginning was alright. I'd say it's better than Season 1 though. Season 3 has been a godsend, though Namek was some of their best stuff in terms of shows. Their gaming channel has been consistently good, though. FFVII-A has really helped me get hype to play VII again.

I don't know what changed between then and now, but it really worked. Sure, there are still pop culture references that date the show, but everything works so much better. What they're doing with Cell and Vegeta really fucking works. Lani and Taka really shine. The VAs in FFVII-A are good, but Barret can be grating at times. Cloud, Tifa, and Rufus are solid, though.

It's actually a really good relic. The SB has the same potency as Squall's SSB (4x 2.0 multiplier) though obviously Tyro's stats kinda suck and it doesn't give bonus attack for mastering it. Still, with some buffs and debuffs or against a lightning weak boss,Tyro will hit like a truck with it.

What do you think the world of Final Fantasy VII was like thousands of years before the present, in the time of the Cetra? I am fleshing it out a bit to use in a pen and paper setting known as "Whisper of the Cetra". I know there isn't much official word, but I was hoping someone might have some creative ideas.

I was thinking of going with the idea that the Cetra were not native to Gaia, and that they wandered the universe traveling from planet to planet, communing with the Lifestream and seeking the Promised Land, all part of some elaborate religious tradition. Along the way they encountered and eventually defeated (or sealed away) a group of nasty elder evils, of which Jenova was a member. Jenova eventually escaped and attacked and destroyed the Cetra on Gaia, leading to the events of FFVII, all things that will eventually be explored in our game. I was writing some basic lore to be read by the players and came up with some stuff that sounded vaguely Lovecraftian.

“It was whispered that the Cetra had come down from the stars to the world when it was very young, and had built their cities and lived in peace for eons. They were the ancestors of all men, yet none could guess from what star—or what place beyond the stars—they came. Their hidden cities are still full of knowledge, wisdom and ancient mystery, though few have the courage to explore them.”

I also considered going with the idea that the Cetra are a bit like Jedi, wandering mendicant do-gooders with spiritual powers, and the universe is well-populated and accessible by the players.

Anyone ever thought about this? Is it even worth the trouble? Everyone at my table loves FFVII and wants to play in the time of the Cetra, it wasn't my idea, but I am the forever DM so I want to make it as good as possible for them.

I thought it would have a Crush, Ravage, Vanquish, Counter, Descend, Ascend, and Raid attack for every weapon, and it just executes one these depending on what buttons you press, and the weapon you're holding.

You now have manual weapon switching, you have four weapons you set to the D-Pad and you set each weapon to be either a Crush, Ravage or Vanquish type of attack when you tap Attack with that weapon, each of the four weapons have their own Counter and Descend attacks too

So for example Weapon 1 I can set to Crush, when I tap attack it will only do Crush attack
Weapon 2 I can set to be Vanquish, when I tap attack it will only do Vanquish attacks

Each of the four weapons have their own Counter and Descend attacks regardless, so if I jump and press attack while weapon 1 is on then I do a Descend attack with weapon 1, if I jump and press attack with weapon 2 is on then I do a Descend attack with weapon 2, etc same deal with counters

There is no such thing as Ascend or Raid separate from Descend, Descend is used for all aerial attacks and is just basically an aerial version of Crush, and in the Japanese version Descend is called Raid

A lot of FF games didn't really have traditional fantasy RPG armor, so using characters outfits makes sense.

FFVIII literally didn't have armor at all. They used a few items that were equipment in previous FFs as refinement items, but that's it. RK even had to use some of the refinement items as weapons just so there would be swords and daggers with FFVIII synergy.

During a crush attack if you start holding forward it extends the crush section by another few unique attacks. During the Ravage section you can hold the stick either forward, to the sides or back, to do directional specials. You might have seen noctis do a backflip off of the enemy or spin sideways. That is the ravage directional special for the shortswords. You 've also probably seen the forward jumping spear attack. Also a directional special.
Vanquish, was only triggered if you stopped attacking for a moment, noctis will start a backstep animation. Any time during this animation you can press attack again and he will do a vanquish. There are other ways to control which attack comes out, like rolling, dodging, jumping, etc.

It is important that you understand how the above thing works, because only then will you realize that if you can only do 1 (say ravage) out of 3 (crush, ravage, or vanquish) ground attacks per equipped weapon that means you will have a smaller moveset than what was implied before. Unless you feel like going to the menu each time. That's shit man.

In the demo you would set up a combo like this for example

Crush = Avenger
Ravage = Bloodsword
Vanquish = Zweihander
Counter = Partisan
Descend = Wyvern lance

When you tap Square it would string automatically from Crush, Ravage and Vanquish while you are tapping or holding the button, the first hit is always a 1:1 tap that does Crush, then it will automatically string into Ravage and do a canned animation for the duration you are still tapping or holding it until an enemies HP is in critical, when an enemy is in critical HP then it will automatically switch to Vanquish which does one single finisher hit

Doing a Counter move would use the weapon you set to Counter, doing a Descend move would use the weapon you set on Descend

That is how the combos and attacks worked in the demo, very situational, very automated


Now they changed it so you have manual control over the entire combo

You have four weapons each set to Up/Down/Left/Right on the D-PAD and you can set each weapon to be a Crush, Ravage or Vanquish type attack, and each four weapons has their own Counter and Descend attack too

So you could set it up so each weapon is either a Crush, Ravage or Vanquish, either all four of one type or a mix, so for example

Up D-PAD Weapon 1 = Avenger - Crush
Down D-PAD Weapon 2 = Bloodsword - Crush
Left D-PAD Weapon 3 = Zweihander - Vanquish
Right D-PAD Weapon 4 = Wyvern Lance - Ravage

All four of those weapons have their own Counter and Descend attacks too when jumping and pressing Attack or doing Counters

So tapping Square with Weapon 1 will do Crush attacks with Avenger, Crush attacks in a combo with 1:1 input, you can manually switch to another weapon lets say Weapon 3 by pressing D-PAD Left and now we have Vanquish with Zweihander, so tapping attack now will do Vanquish Attacks with Zweihander, switch to Weapon 2 with D-PAD down to use Bloodsword and do 1:1 Crush with that too, etc

The Crush, ravage, vanquish system =/= automatic weapon switching.
crush, ravage, and vanquish refer to the state your character is in when attacking.
Crush = while standing still, or walking
Ravage = After Crush
Vanquish = While backstepping
Counter = after parrying
Descend = while in mid air.
In the demo these were all locked to the weapon you put in that slot. So it automatically switched.
In the full game it will not automatically switch, but these states will still be in there.

Of course I don't want automatic weapon switching you tard. But I do want those attack states.

Yes it is, that is literally what that is, that is what the devs stated it to be too

CRV in the demo is an automated switch between a combo string when you tap or hold attack

This was exactly what I meant. Not only that, when I play the demo, and I do so with a very analytical eye, trust me on that, everything seems to point to that direction.

The only thing I'm not sure about it how they will handle switch targets effectively since the directional inputs are bound to directional attacks, and thus can't be used to switch targets. I'm hoping for a dmc style hold target lock to do forward+attack specials, but that's wishful thinking really.

Let's pray to god they'll just add a gambit system with button bomcination gambits for special attacks. That way the jrpg fags, and bamham fags and dmc fags will all be happy.
