so I beat the game for the first time and of course I wanted to know which area/boss people had more trouble with so I looked at polls and shit

apparently people think ebrietas is the hardest boss in the game and they HATE yahar'gul.

personally I thought orphan of kos and laurence were the hardest bosses in the game but that's not the point.

Lots of people hate yahargul since it can hit quite hard early on in the game when you go there after bsb. Sure its fun later after Rom when everything is more level an gear appropriate but at bl 30 with only +4 or 3 gear it was an absolute nightmare for me in my first playthrough

In regards to Yaha'gul though:

The area is just intimidating

Tons of respawning enemies, forcing you to always find the Bell Maiden, so rushing through area or being on a sort of a timer all the time
The enemies themselves are also basically reused ones, but buffed up
The 3 hunters thing in the Gaol/church is also frustrating for many

I personally liked the area myself, it gave a good spin on an area that was visited previously and also a creepy one, but I can definitely understand why people might dislike it

I've only reached the Cleric Beast so far and gained 1 insight from that, but then lost it after I summoned Father Gascoigne. I died then and lost that insight for good. Is there no way to gain insight other than story related actions?

Favorite area of the game? Doesnt have to be the easiest or the most difficult, maybe not even the one thats most well designed, just the one you found you liked the most.

For me it had to be Yahar'gul, just the first time I got past the bloodstarved beast and got captured by the bag guys and explored the village was when I was actually terrified and said, this is a horror game not just some sort of adventure-esque type game with spooky monsters. Close second would have to be Mensis.

I was the same way fighting him with Rakuyo. The way you want to do it with smaller weapons is like this:

Step 1. Stay far outside his reach and wait for him to do an attack that makes him stop tracking you. Most of his slams in Phase 1 cause this (though his tracking in phase 1 is slow to begin with) as does his laser attack.

Step 2. Attack his tail once, without locking on. This will usually cause him to jump immediately if you do it right. Do not get too close or lock on or he will attempt to do his 360-degree counterattack which is usually an instakill.

Step 3. When he jumps, don't move. Instead, turn 180 degrees. You will be underneath him facing the underside of his head. Lock on for a second and chop at his head a few times, then run out from underneath his head and get as far away as you can. You don't want to run underneath him and try to escape between his legs because he will counterattack.

The only time you're ever in danger of getting hit is during Phase 3, when his reach basically doubles. Even then, as long as you're far enough away you can usually survive one swipe.

Ludwig on the other hand, is one of the hardest things I ever had to do, ever. Fucking hell why did they put him as a first boss, it's insane he hits like a fucking track, has like a billion moves that are really difficult to predict plus when he whips out his sword it's fucking sweat town in there. Amazing boss, managed to surpass Flamelurker as my favourite Souls(-like) boss of all time.
